LDV road test reports and car reviews

LDV Group Limited was a British van manufacturer, based in the Ward End area of Birmingham. In its history part of Rover Group and Leyland DAF, was latterly a wholly owned subsidiary of the Russian GAZ group. Due to the worldwide recession and a lack of long term investment, production was halted at LDV's Birmingham factory in December 2008.

LDV Maxus 120 SWB 2006

Originally a leased van, but bought from lease company for 3K when LDV went bust. I had been the only driver and van had less than 60K miles. Early problems with windscreen leak and rubber mat going in hole at 20K miles, which was sorted under warranty. The Northampton dealer went bust and I ended up dealing with Brian Curries in Milton Keynes - a big mistake as they caused more problems than they repaired and always had the van for weeks. We are a mobile 24hr Locksmiths so the van carries a lot of gear along with big safes too. Now we service the van ourselves, we are really happy and advise 3K oil and filter changes. We have just replaced the clutch at 78K as the clutch arm cracked (complete clutch kit and arm £130). The glow plugs are just about to be changed as cold weather is causing sluggish starting. We had all usual problems with the alarm and central locking; Waxoyl the linkage to the solenoid in the side loading door and make sure the contacts are clean, this sorts it out. We love our Maxus, it’s far better than my mate’s Transits.

I bought a Maxus van three years ago from Hampshire Van Sales Direct, Portsmouth. An excellent van, which has given me no trouble at all. The after sales has been first class and without doubt this is the best vaule for money van you can get. I highly recommend this van and Hampshire Van Sales Direct. I will by another one from the same place next year.

LDV Convoy LWB High Top 1999

I bought mine two years ago from Chepstow in Wales (eBay) for £725. It’s a 1999 T Reg 2.5TD Ford engine with 96k on the clock. It now has 109,000 on the clock and it’s just coming up for it’s MOT. I love this van even though it drives like an old tractor. In fact going up steep hills, I’ve even had a tractor or two get impatient with me and lol overtaken me, but I don’t care, I just love it. Like British Seagull outboards (and yes I’ve got one of those in the back too), it has no frills, it just ’quietly’ does what it’s supposed to. It has excellent load carrying ability, sticks to the road like glue, has a good heater in mine and returns approximately 32mpg. Well, I do cruise in neutral given the slightest opportunity. If you keep on top of the maintenance these engines will just keep going and going and going. It’s not going to win any prizes in the looks department, a bit like me, but whatever you throw at it she just keeps going. Of course she (Tom) has the usual wooly steering, the odd rattles from here and there and a few of it’s own unique quirks, but it’s comfortable and dare I say it, when you wind her up on a long journey seems to lap up the miles fairly effortlessly. Plenty of low end grunt, it actually turns heads when climbing up a steep hill lol. Got mine converted into a stealth camper. Pine bed in the back elevated on 4, 4" oak posts, living room is downstairs, the loo in it’s own separate room at the back, a kitchen and of course a woodburning stove for warmth. Tickety boo, it’s bloody lovely! Wouldn’t swap it for the world. The last full tank of fuel I put in (£105) was good for 775 miles (with a lot of coasting in neutral). It’s MOT is coming up late December 2011. It needs a new windscreen, having that done on Thursday. The kingpins might need greasing up. The power steering belt needs tightening. It needs two new tyres and the handbrake needs adjusting. Simple jobs. Think that’s about it. It’s had in the last 2 years: A new timing belt, new tyres, new front pads, new rear shoes, oil changes etc (never burns any oil) - I’m just so impressed with it. In fact she’s beautiful and I thoroughly recommend them to anyone. Come January, this one is heading off around Europe for a good 10,000 mile drive and I’ve got complete trust in her ability to deliver. At 6’6" tall even I can stand up straight (almost) in the back and driving? Plenty of legroom. Perfect. 10/10. Jeremy Clarkson eat your heart out lol.

My LDV 400D UDV has been converted to a motorhome and I love it to bits. It has a Ford 2.5T running gear, it does 50 miles an hour down hill, up hill, all day long and runs with no problems. It also has air suspension and loads of room. It’s British, has no fancy toys and is very reliable.

LDV Convoy Hi Top SWB Van 1996

We have driven an LDV Convoy from the UK to Bulgaria and back a number of times. Its 2,000 miles each way and the van was fully laden on the way out. This particular van has the Peugeot engine, which whilst not having startling performance does have the virtue of just going on for ever. Loaded or empty, short or long journies the MPG does not vary much being 27 point something all the time. Three up in the cab is a bit snug but not uncomfortable even for those of generous proportions. Long days were no problem. People have said "You would not do that again would you?" Well yes we would. Indeed another LDV van (1999 Banana engined version) is due to make the trip within the next couple of months. We love ’em!

I have had my Convoy for 3 years and only had minor problems, brakes mainly. It’s a proper robust van, which never fails thanks to the Ford duratorque engine! The Sprinter looks nicer and is faster but Ldv are strong and built to last. They’re not rust buckets either! LDV any time!

I have had mine for about three years now, what a brill van, use it for my work as we are mobile mechanics. Yes they are cheap, but ours has been very good, we have put a clutch and timing belt kit on it and front disc pads, but three years we have had it, and it keeps going. We work on them all French, German, Fords, they all make us laugh. Expensive junk. LDV any day. Only one problem, a buzzer goes off now and again, but van still drives and goes ok. Thanks LDV. And it was built in Britain.

LDV Convoy LWB/HR 400 2.5 Di (Banana) 1998

Having seen LDV’s in the service of the Post Office and Royal Mail in UK, I got to drive my first 400 in Munich, Germany. There they are loathed, preferring (naturally) their own Mercedes Sprinter, which is considerably faster, quieter, more comfortable, better built, more refined, and two or three times as expensive. I drove my first ’wide’ LDV from Munich to Berlin to Hamburg to Munich, round trip approx 1000 miles. At first I really didn’t fancy the trip in this vehicle, I doubted it would make it back as it was far from new! Anyway, fully loaded and dragging a twin axle trailer I set off. Immediately I knew it wasn’t going to break any land speed records but it didn’t seem to lack in the grunt department. Loaded, it was comfortable, in a basic sort of way. The basic radio/cassette kept me ’entertained’. (the speakers need better quality - mine were very tinny). It settled down to a steady 50 mph, (the German Police - the B.R.G. are very hot on truck speeds so you don’t push your luck). Even over the really big hills on the way to Berlin the LDV showed lots of effort, but that growl from the 2.5 Di is pain. Economically though, I was pleasantly surprised, the same trip a week earlier in a Sprinter returned approx 18-20 mpg, the LDV returned 24, not much to write home about but over a thousand miles thats a big saving. I had a full bulkhead so draughts were not a problem, those vans with half or no bulkhead can be very cold and the heater is pathetic. After a few years experience there are a few points worth mentioning: Maintenance is everything, especially with LDV’s, neglect it at your cost, keep it maintained and it will serve you well. 1, The steering is c**p, it wanders around with a mind of its own, and it has never improved on any 400 that I have driven. 2, The brakes are not the best, they will stop you, but you need a good heart and plenty of boot. (on a trip to Piacenza, Italy over Europa Brucke and down the massive pass to Bolzano I thought a few toilet rolls would have been a good addition to my overnight bag!) 3, The 2.5Di (Banana) engine is a good reliable lump, keep it well maintained and it will do a million miles, and never let you down, fast it ain’t, but it’s bullet proof. Pity it didn’t have a turbo. 4, L.D.V. stands for Lousy Dented Van - according to my German friends, can you imagine the look on their faces when their broken down Sprinters were dragged home by my van? LOL, it was a joy to behold. 5, If its cold outside, dress well, the heater is next to useless. 6, A bigger fuel tank would have been useful. 7, The LDV is a working van, it’s robust, has no frills, bells or whistles, it will serve you well if you take care of it. I am happy to say my workhorse is a ’W reg’ LDV 400. I wouldn’t change it for anything. And BROWN needs shooting for killing the company.

LDV Maxus 2006

I picked my LDV up the other day and drove it home 160 miles and I was quite surprised how much LDV has improved. I’ve just come from a 2002 transit and i’ll tell you somthing, it’s 100 times better and for the money you can get two Maxus for price of one Transit, the same year. Transits and Renaults have problems with the clutch aswell, at the end of the day it’s wear and tear on parts and the way people thrash them, but the LDV for the money difference.. what can I say? Shame really that LDV went bust.

Bought 2008 Maxus lwb high roof Oct 2009 had done 21000 miles, it’s now done 88000 miles had no problems at all ’TIL NOW! Had the engine management light on, loss of power etc. Been to main dealers on diagnostic machine can’t find any problems. Air intake in a stupid place near front wheel sucking water in to air filter, had a kit put on to stop the water getting to air filter, changed fuel filter, and had air flow intake sorted, goes well now, spoke to a lot of people with the same problems, all they have done when this happens is what I have done and their vans have been fine.

I bought the van new, and so far have done just over 80,000, most of it with two bulk bags of gravel in the back. The air-flow sensor shorted out in the snow, but that was repaired under warranty, otherwise it’s a great van. Ok, the panels are thin, but it was £7k cheaper than a similar size, so I can live with that. If LDV hadn’t gone bust and was still honouring the warranty it would have got 5 stars. Oh yeah, the radio is c**p!

Ibought my 03 LDV Convoy LWB a couple of months ago off eBay. The only complaint I have is that the steering is a bit sloppy, other than that it is a really good van. I admit it can be a bone shaker, like the LDV Pilot I had a few years before but as it goes for value for money and reliabilty it is worth every penny. LDV Convoy 9 Seater Crew Cab / Splitter 2000

Company vehicle used for touring bands - have previously used Merc’s, Transits, VW’s - all ridiculously expensive. This was a genius buy. Picked her up 2nd hand for £2.5k - Only ever had one problem with it since new (in 3 years) fan/alternator belt thing went - RAC fixed it in 30 mins - cost: £20.00 Have travelled the length and breadth of Europe in this, carrying up to 9 people at a time plus a shed load of amps, drum equipment etc. Never skipped a beat. Yes - it’s not the most comfortable bus in the world but dirt cheap to run, hi top so doesn’t feel claustrophobic - deals with the hard life of a band van and all the knocks - built like a tank. Occasionally need to re tighten a few screws on the doors etc, as it rattles it’self loose. but for this kind of money - well - you can see why the army, air force, police and postal service use them.

LDV Maxus

Firstly. Star rating - I would like to put 0, that’s how bad my van has been. I’ve owned this van from new, paid far too much for it. It has had 3 new clutches, 2 new alternaters, alarm system ripped - out could not be fixed, 2 new suspention strutts. All this work was done under warrenty. 4 and 1/2 years later I still have the van but I am in need of a new engine - the turbo went and took the engine down with it. But after all this I still like driving my van, it had worked well over the years. The engine managed to live for 160,000 miles. Anyone out there who might want to get rid of their Maxus engine? I would be intersted in bringing mine back to life if any one can help... my email address is info@kidzdobounce.co.uk. Thank you, Mark.

Bought this van and have had ongoing problems, from doors not locking correctly to engine faults. Clutch kept going, the materials are cheap and flimsy and the electronics a joke. I’ve had two of these vans from my company and what can I say? The 06 plate cost over £4500 in one to keep on the road, clutch, wheels bearing’s, brakes, steering rack. I’ve now got a 08 plate, which is not much better. The biggest problem is fuel starvation on it, get to 1/4 of tank and the eml comes on, in the end the engine cuts out, leave it 30 secs starts up, fill the tank and no prblems with it. With the latter, does any one know what the problem is? It’s been to LDV loads of times and comes back from them saying no problem?

As a business man this is the best value van I have ever purchased and driven. OK, we all know the pre 06 reg Maxus was not up to standard, 06 and on are great vans with a lot of the problems sorted out. People have pointed out bad brakes, steering, gearbox, and bad clutch and so on. Well walk in to any branch of a parcel delivery company (DHL) and jump in to few months old Merc or Tranny, after it’s been driven by 12 assorted drivers every week and you would say what a load of crap!!! The van’s condition is down to the drivers who treat them like crap, they even vent there anger out on them. My Maxus has had one driver, done 45,000 miles, received just the normal services and I have had it for 2 years. And remember the clutch trouble the Transit had (mass fly wheel or some thing) - I had 3 in mine!

LDV Maxus LWB Hitop 2008

Collected from LDV Heathrow in June 2008. Metallic Silver with AC. Dealer said he’d put in an alarm and didn’t, but I requested the spare was slung underneath, some £250 worth of extra’s! I didn’t pay for the extra as they didn’t fit the alarm, they didn’t pursue it so neither did I. AC system didn’t work, they wanted the whole van back for two days! I paid a local AC firm to de-gas and re-gas (A MUST with r314a) and found it only had 250g instead of 840g. From new the drivers door didn’t fit, so it rubs on the front wing, now rusty. Leaks somewhere. Now found (read on): Radio is complete c**p or something is wrong with the aerial, probably related to the leak. It’s made from VERY thin metal so even my cat has managed to dent it. Recent very cold weather and a hot engine managed to cause a huge dent in the bonnet; if I didn’t see it for myself I would be looking for vandals now. New battery now required after 15,000 miles. The leak was eventually traced to a poorly fitted windscreen; Write ’top’ and ’bottom’ on the rubber, starting near the aerial completely remove the rubber seal surrounding the screen, it comes out easier than you think, with a good quality black silicone rubber (soft and runny, fill the channel around the screen about 1/3rd full. It may be necessary to dry out the channel with a combination of natural drying and tissues, before the silicone can set, push the rubber back in place. Mines never leaked since. Also note the Hi-top suffers with bad condensation on roof above the screen. I removed the parcel shelf, then glued some Air Conditioning insulation rubber across; this stuff ain’t cheap, but I’m in the trade anyway. All that said I think the van is value for money. Now our VW Sportline, she’s a babe, but the missus drives that!

Stay well clear of these vans. Had mine 2 years and problems from day 1: Water leaks in at foot well on passenger side, cracked cylinder head, 3 clutches replaced, altenator, battery, turbo hose spilt, drive shafts, ball joints and drop links and this is only the half of it. Also the replacement parts are very hard to get hold of, so I’ve had to purchase every part from an LDV dealer which I hate. Looking to change my van now before it cost me any more money, maybe a Sprinter or Renault Master? Any suggestions?

Well where do we start with this van?...1) Engine management light on all the time spoke to LDV they say it happens but its not a problem. 2) Rear door is terrible, it breaks in the cold. 3) Side door out of alignment within days of ownership. 4) Brakes are terrible, non responsive. 5) Handbrake wouldn’t hold a Mini. 6) No height adjustment on drivers seat. 7) Passenger seats are not comfortable. 8) Bodywork is like a sardine tin. All in all, this has to be the worst van ever to sell in the UK and its a shame, the Russians have managed to cut back on all major parts; starter motor, alternator etc. My van had new engine on 40k due to oil pump failure now on 65k and having problems with the coolant system, some days no heat other days it works. The clutch was replaced after 30k and the slave cylinders gave up twice. Just walk past the LDV garage and buy a transit or a sprinter or anything other than an LDV!

LDV Convoy 2002

I purchased a convoy ex military 3 years ago, it’s part crew cab van, the LDV bit is fine, bit dated, I couldn’t say the same for the Transit bits though. It’s had a new duel mass clutch at 101 thou miles, then blew the seals out of the slave cylinder when clutch was being bled costing 500 quid. Occasionally goes through the heater plugs on while we’re moving making it stunt stop, have to restart the engine to get going again. It’s had two alternator belts and the belt tensioner bearings are showing signs of wear. Also had a recon steering box fitted as the old one was weeping oil, but it failed mot for it. The steering pin doesn’t last if you don’t keep it greased. It tows a ifor williams trailer easy. It’s my second Convoy, my last one had the Peugeot turbo, that one was fine but steering box went on that one too, that’s why I got this one, you have too take engine out to get box out. I love the LDV, it’s a proper work horse, I’ve had 6 including the 200 models and I’d have another. Thanks alot brown for stuffing LDV, i’ll always hate you.

LDV Convoy LWB high roof 2002

Hi all, I bought a brand new 2007 transit that suffered over 50 breakdowns in 2 years [11,347 miles] and is now dead!! So I bought an LDV convoy 2002 3,5ton to replace it and I have to say what a great van. My mate serviced it and it cost £20 for genuine air, oil and fuel filters. I have beefed up all the doors with extra chubb locks, fitted a tracker and a 5,000watt inverter. The LDV is not a racing van but is happy to plod along in the pace of todays drivers. I would recommend an LDV to anyone as mine does over 350 miles to a tank of diesel. The transit was a woefull 24MPG. I would buy a new LDV today!

I am a courier and have just taken my Maxus through the 100,000 miles mark. I’ve just had a clutch fitted and had the timing belt changed as per the service requirements. It’s an excellent work horse with no real problems to report. Yes it’s basic the panels are thin, but hey you get what you pay for. Look after it, drive it with care and she’ll take care of you. RIP LDV, such a shame.

Hiya, did you pay £300 for timing belt including labour or was that extra? Thanks - Keith Jones from England

I wish I had found this site earlier. I have to manage a small fleet of light commercials, the LDV being the newest addition. Within 20,000 miles it has had more problems than the rest of the fleet combined. Door locks failed, radiator fixing bolts vanished, rad hose split, fuses blowing, water ingress, rust, radio works when feels like it, power steering reservoir worked loose and fell off etc. etc. etc. The best yet is total clutch failure after 20,000 miles and on light duties. Thank goodness the rest of the fleet is not LDV. I would be redundant as the company would not make any deliveries.

I’ve only had this van for about a month and have spent a bit of money on it already but as I can’t say how it was treated before I got it I’ve no problems with spending on it. It drives really well and I find it much more comfortable than my previous Transit van. I drive a 100 mile round trip 6 days a week to work and it’s a total pleasure to drive. I love it and best of all its British.

Just bought the Maxus lwb 2006 model. After reading some of the views on here; have I done the right thing? But saying that, it seems to drive fine with no problems so far, not sure how much warranty is left on the van. I bought from auction with no service print-out with 19000 miles on the clock. Does anybody know how I can get any info regarding warranty? Thanks. I had the van at the right price in comparison with the transit OF THE SAME AGE saved about £3000.. and the last transit I had no end of problems, for example - NEW FUEL PUMP £900 POWER STEERING TENSIONER £300 NEW MIRRORS £80 SENSORS LOST COUNT, MISTED HEADLIGHTS £120 - rust... loads of... all makes of vehicles have their problems, you just have to live with them.

LDV Convoy 2.8 low roof 2000

Bought the van in June 07 for a little over £1000, so a great deal cheaper than other makes. This has the Transit running gear which has always worked fine and never let me down yet. On buying the van I let my local garage replace the cam belt, flush out the rad, service, pads etc. The starter motor packed up in France in October 07 (bump start at the port); this was replaced on return with a Ford one (not the Korean one that LDV use). It is now just under 2 years old with MOT next week the paintwork/body are starting to look a little worn/rust spots but as its a builders van it does have a hard life. It has taken me and my tools to my house in Brittany many times fully loaded and still does 70 -75 on the motorway with tow bar fitted (bought for £60 on eBay, brand new) - tows fine as said before. It is a little dated but at least you can still work on it without the need for a laptop. I can say that I am pretty happy with the van but have been thinking of changing for the Maxus but will wait to see if LDV survive their current cash crisis (or us!)

We bought this van and have had a few problems; cab door hinges weak, had have a new battery at the start of it’s life, but it is British we should support LDV - they are cheap and basic but still a better than anything the French or Italian van makers can produce.

Can honestly say that for the money this is the best van we have had. OK, Sprinters are nicer to look at but they wont earn me another £10K per van!! Previously had a Citroen Relay which were c**p & had poor dealer service. Our local dealer here was quick to service & cheap.

We have had this van since new, it was purchased from Birmingham and on the short drive from there to Reading it broke down. As soon as this happened I should have got rid, anyway the van is just over 1 year old now and goes back to LDV every month for them to reset the computer and put on new pedal. We have had 5 new pedals. So, last month, it went back from where we got it for them to say it’s the pedal, so it gets changed again. Always goes wrong between the 9th and 14th off each month. Its the 13th of April today and my van is waiting to be recovered, new pedal and a reset of the computer here we come. DO NOT BUY A LDV MAXUS!!!

LDV Convoy Convoy 2003

I have quiet a few Convoy minibuses; the early ones (1996) run the Peugeot engine. I have one with 200k on it, still going great but maybe a little tired. A bit later, in 1998, they run the Ford DI; a great engine and coupled to the MT75 gearbox, simple and reliable. In 2001 the Ford Dura engine has a few faults but the same drivetrain as a transit for little money. Unlike some people I have not hired one of these for a day - I have worked and used them for 12 years. My opinion is that it is a good twin wheel reliable workhorse with no frills but do the work you bought them for if maintained. MY OPINION IF LDV HAD CONTINUED MAKING THEM ALONGSIDE THE MAXUS (YUK) THEY WOULD NOT BE IN THE TROUBLE THEY ARE NOW . I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT MORE AND SO WOULD HAVE MANY PEOPLE I KNOW WITHIN THE BUS INDUSTRY, AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

I bought this van from new and straight away had a list of problems including central locking not working, rear door locks breaking, side door lock breaking several times, not starting - flat battery several times, hole in floor mat within 8 months, rusty roof, leaking roof. This van is that bad that I used it for 9 months then parked it up and bought a new van when I took it in for a part exchange the dealer offered me £1500 - it was 9 months old with 12,000 miles on the clock. Do I need to say more? USELESS!

Responses to this review

The rear and side loading doors are not locking, usually due to dirty contacts on the door switches. These should be bright and shiny, side door is worse than rears as it doesn’t have a raised pip. Further battery problem due to radiator fans running on and on when engine off/cold. Not yet resolved as intermittent, but I will change relay and sensor switch. The van is okay for the money - Paul King from London

This is the second Maxus on the fleet. We also have a 05 swb 120 van. We have found them to be very reliable, cheap to service and very good value for money. The cab has all the things you want electric windows, mirrors etc... but best of all it is still built in this country and it deserves our support! Its a shame some people look at the badge rather than the van.

We are on our second Maxus vehicle for our business and I was shocked to read reports above. We have had Citroen’s, Ford, and Vauxhall in the past and for us the Maxus is perfect. Great engine, reliability, and service from the dealership. The load area for the class is brilliant, and ok furnishing is basic but for the price its unbeatable. Brilliant British made van, thank god for the Maxus!

Worst van I have driven. 1. Badly under-steers (wouldn’t like to drive in winter) 2. Poor response on brakes. 3. Seats like park benches, gave me backpains after 30 minutes drive. 4. No height adjustment on drivers seat. 5. Instrument panel in wrong place, need to take eyes off road to make out symbols. 6. No small mirrors to help with blind spot view.

LDV Convoy Convoy LWB Hi-top 2002

Having made a last-minute ebay purchase on EBAY i was left requiring a van to move some large furniture from the New Forest up to Bath. A local hire company soon furnished me with a van, which turned out to be a 5 year old LDV convoy. Getting into the convoy is like climbing into a tardis in two ways. firstly, the cab is extremely spacious - due to the convoy’s large width compared to similar vans. Secondly you travel back in time to the 1970s when you settle into the basic interior. The controls, all large simple buttons, and the basic dashboard with very few dials and lights, are like something from another era. On starting the engine all those features which would be quite useful to remain still, such as the (manually adjusted) wingmirrors and gearstick, begin to vibrate. On depressing the accelerator the engine emits a roar which sounds like its in severe need of a packet of soothers. However, this does transmit to good power on the road, and, even unladen, the convoy holds the road as if its stuck there with glue. Acceleration when empty was good, and the convoy coped with all the hills i threw at it. The (loosely fitted) plywood bulkhead didnt fill me with confidence when the back was full of furniture, especially as there seemed to be little to tie it to! However, the chances of stuff moving around when breaking with the convoy’s pathetic brakes were fairly low! All in all an uninspiring vehicle to drive, but an experience for anyone who wants to make their own car or van seem like a luxury model!

The maxus I drive is a company vehicle and it does its job well. The only down side to this van is the instrument arrangement as these are set into the middle of the dash which, as a three seater cabin, means you have to keep looking to the left to check anything, although you do get used to it. Nice little van.
