From the Eurovans range, the Fiat Ulysse is one of a group of large MPVs that differ in only marginal ways as they are produced as a joint venture between PSA and Fiat. All of the eurovans share mechanical and body structure. The Fiat Ulysse was named after the Roman name for Odysseus and its first generation model was superseded in 2002. Alongside the Fiat Ulysse in this group were the Citroen Evasion/Synergie, Lancia Zeta and Peugeot 806 – they were later replaced by the Citroen C8, Lancia Phedra and Peugeot 807 with only the Fiat Ulysse name retained.

Bought my Ulysse in 2005 with 56 miles on the clock and everything was good for9 months then the"antipollution" light came on. The main dealer was contacted more times than I care to remember. It took 18 months (and an unnecessary change of Turbo) before pleas to Fiat brought their engineer down who fixed the problem in a morning. For 3 Years I had no problems then the rear wash stopped working one winter and the central locking packed up. I called out a motor electrician who told me main unit would need replacing. However I found out on the Fiat website that the rear wipe pipe in the rear of the car (drivers side-pull out light inspection plastic) would freeze and come apart; reconnected the pipe and the disconnect battery for short time and it was all back working. I have just taken the car to main dealer because fumes are coming in to the car and was told the pipe to EGR valve has corroded and is leaking, which cost me £88 for that piece of info and it will take 5 hours labour to fix at a cost £500-£600. I’m now trying to find out how to do it myself!

Bought as an Ex demonstrator, 3 months old with 2600 on the clock and at first was pleased. Within weeks we had problems with the electric doors opening by themselves evening allowing our 3 year old to fall out into the road when the vehicle was stopped. Plagued with water getting into the electrics, poor drainage and stupid location of fuseboxes, I wouldn’t recommend this car to anyone. In the first year the car went into the dealership 13 times (twice for over a week). Dealership told us that the car had numerous design flaws in the electrics and that Fiat had tried to be too ambitious with the computer systems. The knock on effect of this car’s poor reliability is that the Ulysse now has extremely poor residual value. Built by robots, designed by morons, Fiat UK have washed their hands of any responsibility. The last issue was a loose battery terminal which spiked the computer and did £800.00 worth of damage. Dealership stated that it was the poor design of the quick release battery terminal that was at fault, but we still had a bill for £800.00. All in all if yours works you’re lucky, but don’t be surprised if you get a heap of issues with it. The more advanced your version the more likely your are to get issues. Buyer beware!!

Having 4 kids needed something with a bit of room as we travel a lot. Found ours on ebay and what a bargain. Smooth to drive, very comfy and cavernous when all the rear seats are removed (great for car boot sales). The only downside; which is a common fault with these vehicles is that the door locks sometimes have a mind of their own.

Have had this car from new and almost 3 years on I am still very pleased with it. It’s a very flexible MPV and although you know you’re driving a larger vehicle it handles very nicely indeed. I would definately recommend this, my only regret is that I didn’t plump for the electric side doors, can be a bit of a pain when you’ve got your hands full with the kids.
