I bought this car from new at a cost of around £24K. Because for its size it was very competitively priced and offered the size I needed. The car is now 5 years old and worth around £3K and detailing all the faults will take some time. the number one biggest issue we have had is that the auto gearbox failed at just 47,000 miles and cost £2K to repair. Citroen have refused to accept that this is unreasonably low milage and because the car is out of warranty refuse to help in any way. The other problems include faulty electrics, in particular the big automatic sliding doors. Neither of these can now be opened by the door handles. The internal panels have broken and fallen off and there are other engine problems. Quite frankly I would never recommend this car to anyone. It has been the most costly mistake I have ever made.

Although this is a great versatile car we have had numerous problems from day one (antipollution fault-still not fixed, peeling paint from door handles, cd stuck to name but a few) However, once this car got to 6 years old the cam belt went - too late I found out this is a common problem that Citroen won’t admit to. We decided to get it fixed (£6000) but not by Citroen who quoted £9000 and it now sounds like a tractor. Now had new road springs, and needs a top up of diesel additive, sensor, filter etc quoted £1200. Wish I had got a new car as soon as it went more seriously wrong.

I have had the car a month now and have only had to return to the dealer 7 times for repairs. This is mainly because the dealer is so focused on meeting their own needs rather than the customers that you should be charging them. The first problem was that 2 of the seats were broken so because I had only bought the car that day I had to return to Chesterfield autoworld to be told that it would have to be fixed under warranty. This meant booking the car into their service centre (and a day off work). They were able to fix one seat but the other had to be sent away for a ’new base’. It appears that Citroen do not really use ’new’ anything - they actually use reconditioned parts. I found this out when the CD player skipped tracks and after 2 afternoons off work and 10 days without a radio or any music in the car (it takes a few hours to check a stereo and remove it apparently) they replaced it with something worse. On my way home the stereo jammed, wouldn’t play and wouldn’t release my much loved CD. On returning to the dealers who "were just about to return my call" they explained that even though they had had to removed the CD player and send it off they hadn’t actually fixed it like they told me that they were going to but instead they had exchanged it for a reconditioned CD player, which it appears they had not bothered to fix. The warranty doesn’t appear to be worth the paper that it is written on if Citroen replace the problem parts with more substandard parts.

Slow, underpowered - but, and it’s one big but - I love it! The driving position is great and 8 fullsize seats means that 8 adults fit in relative comfort! The 2 litre petrol with 8 seats is a very comfortable big car, with room for the P3 Hockey team, it’s a perfect workhorse and extended family minibus. Think top of the C8 as a top of the range car and you might be a little disappointed, think of it as a minibus and its going to more than please! The seats are very comfortable; I recently had two weeks in a brand new Ford Galaxy Hire Car, we hated it and couldn’t wait to get back into our much more comfortable C8 back! It is a little sluggish of the mark; not much good for squaring up to boy racers at the traffic lights, but then at nearly 40 I should be getting beyond the desire to prove myself with my accelerator! It is returning a respectable 27.9mpg around the city, but has given me as much as 34.9mpg on a run from Stranraer to Brighton, where I was pushing on at well over the limit on the motorways. The ride is great on motorways and around town, but a little floaty on small Co.Down country lanes. Again, compared to the Galaxy it is dream on country lanes! Once you get it to 45mph it takes off and accelerates well, although getting to 45 can seem a little slow. Overtaking in the C8 needs preparation and wisdom; this isn’t a car for the hasbeen boy-racer! The C8 LX 2.0 Petrol is very good value secondhand and makes for serious competition for comparable compeditors which are often £2-£3k more expensive for similar miles and age. I have worked out that to buy a diesel over the petrol it would have to be no more than £700 more over three years, given that the diesels don’t return very much more in terms of mpg’s. It also makes a great towing car for my caravan, I have a twin-axle ABI running at 1350kgs, it tows it easily, with more than enough poke beyond the hood to work happily around the max 60mpg allowed; due to the weight of the C8, it makes a great choice for the caravan brigade! The car was bought with it in mind that my wife would be the main driver for the kids school runs etc, but she has ended up driving our second car more often than not. I choose it, even when it’s the first car into the drive! Do I have a criticism? One, the seat side on the drivers side is wearing very quickly, watch out for this in higher mileage variants. Would I buy another one? Absolutely. Citreon have it when it come to comfort and value for money. The odd rattle in the dashboard has been silenced with tissue paper, but then again you can’t expect everything to be 5 star! Go on drive a C8, you’ll not be disappointed!

Having never owned a Citroen before and following other people carriers, Chrysler etc... I have found the C8 excellent. Reasonably economical, very comfortable, and the safety rating is excellent. Very difficult to fault at all, servicing very reasonable. I have the SX with electric doors etc... The kids love the car. The 1.9 diesel is a little sluggish but it’s a big car!! Would highly recommend taking a look.

Comfy and spacious - however, the automatic gearbox is an absolute nightmare. Fault, after fault, after fault which Citroen aren’t interested in. Gearbox replaced at 30k under warranty. Now on 60k and it’s as bad as ever but out of warranty. The electronic management of the gearbox is a major design flaw. The manual should be better, although generally the fully integrated electronic control system in the car is just a design technique to get you to return the car to Citroen for regular (and very expensive) repairs. Car struggles to get better than 26mpg. And no, this isn’t a one-off fault report, a google search will reveal just how well known the fault on the AL4 auto gearbox is. Be prepared to spend £2k every 30K miles for a new gearbox.

Solid, safe and reliable family car. Cruises effortless and is extremely responsive. Smooth and quiet at high and low speeds. Very competitively priced and resale value should be respectable. Nice touches such as electric side doors mean access is unimpared and the space offered in this MPV is impressive.
