BMW rounds off its new 5 Series range with the introduction of the Touring estate model. It offers more space than the 5 GT and the previous Touring model to make a solid case for it being the most complete version of the new Five line-up. BMW is so confident about its new wagon, it reckons it will [...]
M Sport Bodykit - If you ever need the space and driving ability of a super tourer then this is the car you should be buying, it is the BMW 535d with an M Sport bodykit. When we had it on test, it behaved impeccably, it is rare to want to hold on to test cars as we get so many, but this is one that this writer wanted [...]

2 years into ownership and I am smitten. Ok the car has been back for various issues, but this is a complex sophisticated car. The twin turbo removes any lag and gives linear power. I would only change it for the New F11 535d or a X5 40d.

So I’m only 2000 miles in and happy so far. I’ve just had an A6 for 60k so this is a direct comparison. It’s true, the idrive is poor, no, make that very poor when compared to the Audi MMI. The ride is harsher and run flats are prone to tram lining on the motorway. I’ve bought a space saver and I’m now counting the miles ’til it’s time to buy new tyres. The head and leg room is better for me (6’7" / 2m tall) but the boot is about 10 cm shorter, this means the push chair has to go across the boot instead of length ways. Steering wheel cannot be adjusted for reach but is in a good place. Fuel economy appears about 5-10 mpg better, but I could just be driving slower, following a speed awareness course (thank you Merseyside police). Heated seats are a must have for anyone with back issues. This is my first car with them and I love it. See my review on the A6 issues I had.

Great to drive. High tech. Fantastic engine etc. But.... Damn expensive to get anything repaired or even diagnosed! Diagnostic check 150€. Replacement of hydraulic rear suspension 700€. Rear wiper motor: 400€. Intermittent rear bulb warning requires replacement light fitting. Make sure you replace windscreen with OE if you have HUD otherwise you get a double image like me! Run-flat tyres 300€ each and can’t find them anywhere when you need them - get a space-saver! PDC can be slow to initiate - reverse slowly - and it should be more sensitive at very close quarters - for me its on constantly too soon. Problems with: ingress of water into electronics via vent flap in offside rear wheel arch! BMW too busy here in Lyon - two weeks for a visit and another two weeks before they do the work!

As an all-round family vehicle there is nothing better. This is my fourth BMW in a row, I have recently been tempted by a Volvo V70, but have decided to wait for the new BMW 5 series touring due soon. Fantastic mix of performance, handling and all-round practicality. Mine has the fancy switchable auto-box with sports mode, which is the best ever. Only downside is fuel economy - I would consider a diesel next, but is the premium for the diesel worth the extra when you consider the fuel costs over the term of your ownership - probably not when you do the maths. In the 50,000 or so miles I have had mine absolutely nothing has gone wrong, no lights bulbs, nothing. My only disappointment has been with servicing costs - BMW dealerships charge a fortune, but their service is as excellent as their cars - I guess with everything you pay for what you get. I will buy their ’service-pack’ next time.

Unquestionably the very best car in it’s class. Blistering acceleration, precision handling, supremely comfortable and exceptionally safe. 286BHP, 0-60 in 6.4 secs, 42 mpg and 186g CO2. Show me another car that compares for driving experience, economy or practicality. This car truly is a star and deserves 6*

Wonderful car, quiet, understated yet very powerful. As long as you drive long distance fairly economical, however city driving will make you feel bankrupt when refuelling. It is a very very heavy car, which makes it much less sporty, especially combined with the auto box, which in itself is good, although I don’t like the downshifts on the motorway. I will now replace it with a 325d Sport Touring company car, which has the same amount of torque. Much lighter, it probably won’t be much slower A-B. And yes, the 3 is smaller than the 5, especially in the back and in the boot, but in the end: how often do you really use it? Good excuse to leave stuff home!

This is a very special car. I recently test drove this and had made up my mind within the first 5 mins that I would be ordering one. I will be taking delivery in two days and I’m very excited to be getting behind the wheel of such a wonderful car again. Maybe giving it a 5 star rating already is a little unfair but I feel that this score will stick for such a well designed car.

Good looking and well built but with all the space you want from a family estate. Who needs 4X4’s? 5 stars from EuroNCAP and an absolutely HUGE inside. Also a real driver’s car, fantastic feel, rear-wheel chasis is great and plenty of grip.
