This is my 3rd A6 Avant,... yes, the shape , size and high tech MMI are all very impressive, but some how the car lacks the older models ’Classic’ combination of solid well designed reliability, together with understated good looks... there used to be plenty of ’in cabin’ storage, but now all the really useful spaces have gone, including the glove box (CD player)... and worst of all the front seats are atrocious, the seatbelts are fitted to the seat, reducing the width, and my right leg and hip are perched on a ridge, as I struggle to find a comfortable driving position. Why oh why produce a high tech car with low tech seats?? perhaps SE means ’seating economy’? I wish Audi would get back to the supremely comfortable seats that led me to the A6 a decade ago and perhaps the designers should remember that we are not all 25 year olds, with 28inch waists... even if they are !

This car is everything I ever wanted in a car BUT five months into owning it, the gearbox had to be replaced. It’s been great ever since... until now... yes, another serious gearbox fault, at the cost of nearly £1300, not what you expect from a quality car, four years old with 36,000 miles on the clock. I didn’t want to part with this car but now I’m wondering whether I should get rid before it costs me more than it’s worth. Full marks to the Audi garage though, a no quibble courtesy car for as long as it takes to repair it.

I’ve owned this car for 8 months, and frankly I’m disappointed with the ride, handling and comfort, which is of the tooth-loosening variety. Maybe it’s my fault for buying the s-line variant, but those wishing for comfort should beware. Reliability and performance are good, however, and economy for a car of this size and performance is also credit-worthy - typically in the 40 mpg area on longer runs, and 35 around town. Load carrying is also good, although Volvo and Mondeo may offer better options if this is important. Overall, OK, but I won’t buy another.

Multitronic cuts out in reverse... Audi had the car in for 3 months and their proposed cure was to increase the idle revs to 1500rmp - some modification! Now cuts out going forward too! At least the contract is up in September. The car pulls away so slowly that I take my life in my hands every time I need to turn right across traffic... Audi say this is a one off. I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has had this problem.

Well built and economic. Handles really well for such a large car. Engine too small - go for the next size up. Would not have another as it has had two major breakdowns- complete clutch failure and engine management failure.

The best car I have had. The engine is smooth and powerful, the multitronic automatic is fast and as there are no real gears, it is super-smooth. Fuel economy from such a big diesel is good. The mmi navigation is much better than the BMW idrive, although I prefer touch screens like you have in the Jaguars. No problems with the car, normal service costs. All in all a very relaxing drive and easy to own.

Owned BMW for years, and this new car is a revelation in terms of poise, understated class, refinement and economy. A key point is as an Audi driver I do not get the usual negative stigma associated with owning the BMW product and other drivers appear to not show the the same level of resentment. The service levels also exceed that of BMW’s take it or leave it attitude. All in all after one months feedback - a class car at a great price given the size.

I traveled a couple of hundred miles to collect my new TT. I had the option to wait a week and it would be delivered but I couldn’t so off I went. It’s the new 3.2 model with the DSG Auto box. In dolphin gray and red leather together with some upgraded alloys its just gob smacking. I chose the Auto box mainly because of the flappy paddles and the numbers being slightly quicker than the manual version. The interior is very solid and lovely to be in. The controls are well positioned and you get a cockpit/fighter pilot feel once seated. It feels allot bigger than the older car and the rear seats could accommodate a small child or a slight lady but they will rarely get any use in the real world. When you turn the key the 3.2 v6 rumbles to life and then settles into a pleasant gurgle awaiting you to select which, out of the many gear choices you have. The Gears. In Drive Here you can pootle around like everyone else on the road, achieving some reasonable mpg’s. Floor the peddle and the box drops a couple of gears and your off like a bat out of hell although this method is not the way to get the best out of it. Let’s call it an overtaking mode. In Sport A flick of the shifter and your in Sport Mode, this basically changes when the car shifts up a gear giving you a higher value on the rev counter (around 5000 - 6000). The car is ultra responsive in this mode and a slight foot twitch is enough to leave the average Joe behind but be warned. You going to be looking at about -18mpg Manual (Paddles) By pushing the stick far left from the DRIVE position you enter Manual Mode. By using the paddles behind the wheel you have total control over when those cogs are going to swap. Well not really total. Obviously this mode takes some getting used to and the tendency to just forget to change is always a factor especially when slowing from a high speed spurt on to a round-a-bout or junction. Alas the car protects you from an embarrassing stall by changing down into 1st for you. TipTronic The paddles are fixed to the steering wheel and turn with it so there are times when you need another option. When on a round-a-bout there is a risk that the paddles become inaccessible but you may need to drop a gear in order to make a quick getaway. This is where the TipTronic mode makes its appearance. The gears can be selected by using a forward and backward motion. This mode is another manual option and could be used on its own quite easily. Also it’s worth pointing out that in Drive mode you have access to instant manual mode by just using the paddles once. This changes the mode temporarily where you have instant performance on tap. The mode resets its self back to Drive if you don’t touch the paddles for a few seconds This car turns heads. It has no way lost its appeal or design flair and they are going to be as popular as the last version The New car has Dynamic servicing but don’t let that fool you into thinking you might get away with a service for 18 months if you drive it carefully. The car will require a service at 10000 or 12 months which ever come first. Now deduct 100 miles off that 10000 figure every time you unleash the beast and plant your foot into the carpet. Still its a lovely car.

The 4.2 V8 engine is needed to get a car of this size really moving. The handling is deft, the grip and body control impressive. A smooth ride is made possible by a great suspension. Head and legroom fits all shapes and sizes with ease and the boot is simply massive. The Audi’s build quality to the very high standard that you now come to expect. Leather upholstery and climate control come as standard, Audi even throw in a Satnav and automatic transmission. The A8 is almost like a mobile home and offers a wonderful feeling of safety and security. The reasons I am unable to award the A8 5 stars is that the fuel economy and company car tax make this a VERY expensive car to own. This is one of the most attractive models available and offers and a classy ride. In hindsight I would opt for a diesel.

Looks great but is very limited in space in the back. Engine is a bit rattly but once you are underway it is hard to tell it is a diesel. My main problem with this car is that the driving position is uncomfortable on long trips. The vibration from the engine makes your foot go to sleep and that can be very annoying. Roof works very well and is nowhere near as noisy as I expected. If you are a local driver with no kids and you can use the cabriolet regularly then it is not a bad buy otherwise avoid it. Next time I am getting a Jaguar XF, hopefully that will be a bit more practical.
