Our 2003 Volkswagen Polo 3 cylinder 1.4 tdi does not have any power, the top speed we can get is at the most 60km p/h and when it reaches this speed it immediately loses power again and it won’t go past 20 k/h. We replaced the injectors and the diesel pump, we also replaced the diesel filter, and it is still doing the same. Could it be that there is compression escaping and where can we start looking for the problem? (1.4 tdi)

Good Day. We took our Volkswagen Polo over from a friend of ours. At first the car seemed fine but then after about 3 days I noticed the fuel gauge isn’t working properly. When the gauge gets to half it is fine but after that the needle would just drop and the petrol light would come on. Then last week the I was standing at a robort. When I wanted to pull off the car didn’t want to move, it felt like someone was pressing the brake. The car died and I tried a couple of times to start the car. When it started it was fine. Last night it did the same but I was driving. It just went dead like it`s not getting any petrol. The sound I get is like when a carburetor car won`t start because it`s dirty or something. I stopped the car and turned the ignition a couple of times and the car started and was fine. What causes this please? Thanks.

My Volkswagen Polo`s fuel gauge is faulty and I`m not sure what the problem is. When you put petrol in for example R250 it shows that the car is almost full of petrol and you can drive 440km. The problem comes when the tank is half full. As soon as the needle goes past the halfway mark it moves around depending if you drive uphill or downhill and then the km reading is also way out. Suddenly the needle just drops and the petrol light comes on. I know there is still petrol in the tank but am not sure how much. Any suggestions as to what causes this?

Hi there. I drive a 2005 tdi Volkswagen Polo 1.9 highline. I have come to notice that my car is lacking acceleration power. The turbo kicks in and the revs as well but it`s not giving me the power that it used to. Is this a sign that my clutch might be giving in?

Hi. I have just changed the rear main seal on my Volkswagen Polo classic 1.6 2005 model because it was leaking and yes it has stopped leaking now. Everything was fine but after changing the seal now my car cuts out and switches off when I stop at a stop sign. When I start it the idling goes high and low. I took it to a mechanic and he suggests it`s a throttle body, but I just don’t understand how it can be this? Can anyone please help me ASAP as I can’t drive my car for a long distance now?

Hi, while I was driving today my Volkswagen Polo jerked and cut the engine. I tried to start it but the engine turns and will not start. I checked the cam belt, petrol pipes into injectors and everything was fine. It still turns the engine but wouldn’t start. Please can anybody help?
Hi. Try changing your distributor cap or coil pack. If the petrol goes into the engine then it means there is no firing. I had a similar problem, but my car didn’t want to start in the mornings. - Thabang Makgopa from South Africa

After having an oil leak on my Volksweagen Polo and fixing it which was an oil sender switch, I cleaned the engine while on idle with gunk and water. The engine stalled and I now cannot start the engine from cold. When the engine does fire and warms up the engine will always start all that day but then the next day I have the same problem. While the car is running the temperature gauge fluctuates. Is this part of the same problem and what is wrong and needs to be replaced? (1.4 eight valve)

My Volkswagen Polo`s gear lever sometimes feels like it popped out of position and feels loose. I’ve spoken to a specialist and they reckon it`s a common problem with VW i.e. wear on the gear lever. Is this normal and is it something major? Could it be the bush that is worn? (1.8i)

Hi I have a Volkswagen Polo classic 1999 model that’s giving me problems after driving through water. A few weeks after I rode through the water my oil light went on and the car jerked and switched off while I was driving (happened about twice). Thought it could be my oil pump that was giving in, but found out that wasn’t the case. After the car stood for a few days it did not want to start at all. The battery seemed dead so we gave it a jump start and it started. I then went to go check my battery and they said it`s good, along with my starter and alternator, so I wanted to know if it could be my computer box? The car struggles to start and the digital clock on my dashboard is faded (seems like a battery problem but it`s not). Any help please?
My Polo 98 used to jerk and stop when I drove during the rain. I checked the coil and found that it had cracks and these cracks were allowing water to get into the coil. I bought a new coil and now problem gone. Also check your air intake pipes to your throttle body, they might suck water into the engine. - Mlando Mlaba from South Africa
That is totally right. I suffered the same problem for a year then got tired of getting stuck in the rain. I sprayed some of that quick start in the coil and it was much better. A few months later it happened again and turned out that the coil housing had hairline cracks in it. I replaced it and no more sadness. - Wesley Loots from South Africa

My Volkswagen Polo has a water leak on the front passenger side and the colour of the water is the same as coolant. What should I do?

I have a Volkswagen Polo Playa 1.6 petrol. The first petrol pump misread the fuel gauge so I bought a new one which does the same as the first one. Recently the car switched itself off while in motion. Can anyone explain why please?
Check if the new fuel pump is returning un-used fuel into the tank. If it is not, then the pump you bought is faulty. The best place to get a good original fuel pump for VWs is from another VW, maybe a written off one. - T From Kenya

I have a Volkswagen Polo Player 2002. My car switches off while driving. When I pull over to the side of the road and start the car again it starts on the turn, but it switches off again after a while when driving. Please can anybody tell me why?
Please clean all the air intake pipes and also service the throttle body with a curb cleaner. My polo 98 used to switch off the engine everytime I stopped, but if I switch it on, it will idle just fine. - Mlando Mlaba from South Africa
