Hi. Just lately I’ve been hearing a sound at the rear of my Volkswagen Polo inside, coming from the backboard. It`s sounding as if there is something loose there but I can’t pin-point the sound. If anyone has encountered such a problem please can anyone help?

Hi. I have a Volkswagen Polo and had sound fitted to it. Just an amp sub and tweeters, factory radio we added a hi low converter, took remote switch in from the cigarette lighter, power from the battery for amp, ground from rear seat, sound fitted and all playing the vehicle started. A customer came in and listened to sound then paid but went back to the car and tried to start it and it never started. We checked all fuses etc , disconnected all the sound but still it doesn’t start. I got the tracking company to disconnect the tracker, had VW come out to see the car and the diagnostics can be read by the car, it says no ignition. The relays inside the car click and the technicians checked it and said it only reads 6v and not 12v . The car swings but refuses to start. What could the problem be and can anyone help please? Thanks. (1.6)

My Volkswagen Polo has an automatic transmission. When I engage it in D, it takes an awful long time before it picks up speed. It is almost like it stalls in first gear and after that it moves just fine. I have also noticed that it`s consumption of gas has also gone up. Can anyone explain why it`s doing this please?

My Volkswagen Polo Classic has started to give me problems. While driving it reduces it`s speed by itself. Could the petrol pump be faulty or the regulator? Can anyone tell me what could be causing this please?

Hi, my Volkswagen Polo Classic makes this terrible noise at the front wheels when I go over speed bumps or any bumps on the road. It happens a lot, especially when it`s cold and it`s been parked for a while. Please does anyone have any idea what the problem is?
Answers
Hi there, I’m having the same problem with my 2005 Polo Classic but when it’s hot it rides well. I have taken mine to be checked and I got a feedback of the noise is coming from the shocks, so I’m having shocks and mountings replaced, ball joints also coz I had the control arm bushes changed but the sound is still there. I’d suggest you take it to be checked! Tumelo from South Africa
Hi Tumelo, I’ve had it checked out already, went to test my shocks all are in good condition. I’ve also been to a Roadworthy testing station, they didn’t pick up anything serious. However, they said I could possibly have sand in my coils/springs which are around my shocks becoz when its raining the noise goes away. I went for another opinion, I was told it could be my brakes. So I’ll have a look into that. Thanks again... Hope u sort yours out too, soon - nqabakazi from South Africa

My Volkswagen Polo`s turbo kicks out if I am driving. When I switch the car off and switch it back on the turbo works again, but again it kicks out. It has cost me already over R20,000 for mechanics to check what’s going on and everybody says they don’t know. They say I have to replace the turbo, but if the turbo is working why must I replace the turbo? Please can anybody help me? (Tdi)

Only when I initially pull away, I hear a double bonk/tap in my Volkswagen Polo, which seems to be behind the dashboard to the lower right. Sometimes it is behind me! Nothing is loose and it does not happen when I pause at lights etc. The garage are nonplussed and their loan car does it too! It`s not every time, but about 6 out of 10 times on initial pulling away. Usually this is not a loud noise. Is this a known fault / characteristic? Any ideas? (1.4 automatic)

I have recently purchased a Volkswagen Polo and it lets in water down the edge of the door. The dealer where I bought it told me it’s a single skin rubber, not a double like they used to use and it’s normal. I feel I’ve been fobbed off. What are your thoughts?

Hi. My Volkswagen Polo`s power steering isn’t working after a bump on the offside of my car, although the steering pump is on the opposite side and the main fuse for the steering blew. I have replaced the fuse and had my friend plug the car into his diagnostic machine. He can find everything but the steering on it so cannot reset it, although there is power to the pump. I`m wondering if it needs a new pump or if there is some fuse relay or reset button after a bump. Can anyone advise me please? Thanks. (70s 1.2)

I was driving my Volkswagen Polo and suddenly the engine stalled and the car stopped. I tried several times to start it but it wouldn`t, then after a while it did start but stalled again. I called someone to check it out but he could not find anything wrong. He also checked the timing belt and the fuel system but found nothing. Eventually he found that two of the engine cylinders work correctly but the other two are not firing because there`s no fire in the spark plug. He changed everything around many times but with no result. Finally he took the car computer out and tried another one and then checked the spark plug and it worked okay. Can anyone help me with what I have to do now please?

I have a problem with my Volkswagen Polo Playa. It switches on but with no power and when I step on the accelerator it switches off. It seems like there is a problem with the petrol flow to the engine via the throttle. Can anyone suggest what I should do?
Answers
Hey, my girlfriend had the same issue on her car once. It had been standing for a while and when we tried to start it started, and as soon as we pressed the accel. it died. After a few more tries the battery was dead too. We ended up jumping and trying again. Eventually we just had to drive with the revs real high. After about 20 km of open road and a few stalls, we noticed the rev regulator was going up and down the whole time, but the petrol issue seemed sorted. If you look on the engine, on the right of the back manifold outlet, there is a small plug with a wire attached. That might be faulty. We replaced it and all was fine. Not a mechanic, we trial and error! Haha, hope it helps! Wynand Gerber from South Africa

Hi, I have 2 questions. My Volkswagen Polo Sedan`s boot won’t open all of a sudden. Is it maybe a fuse or do I have bigger problems? Also the yellow abs light on my dashboard doesn`t go off. What does that mean? Can anybody please help? Thank you. (Sedan)

Just been looking at my son`s with the same problem. I found that the solenoid screws had worked loose and it had fallen from it`s position, snapping the electrical wires. I have owned my Volkswagen Polo 1.4 FSI 53 Reg 5 door car for 2 years but this year I have had no end of trouble with it since Christmas. Firstly the amber engine management light came on. This was water in the coils which were dried out and a special spray put in abd this went well for a month or so. The light came back on so the EGR Valve was replaced and this worked for a month but then it came on again. This time it was the wiring loom so this was re-wired with a pass through wire and this looked to have worked until it happened again. Warning light showed and this time it was the knox sensor, so the actual sensor part has been replaced but I have been told it`s in 3 parts. It`s hooked up each time to a diagnostic computer which has given different fault codes each time. It goes for so long and then randomly comes on. If it comes up again I don`t know what I would do, so I am looking for advice and if I am doing the right thing here. Can anyone advise me please? Thanks for any help.

Hi there. My Volkswagen Polo has an 8V engine with AKK code and EAR automatic transmission. I need to change both, but all transmissions I have found are 1.4 16V and not 8V. Is it compatible to put 16V transmission with 8V engine if I had to, or if not what’s the best solution? Mechanics have suggested I convert my 8V car completely to 16V with all it`s computers and wires in order to avoid not finding codes that I want for my car in the future. Does anyone know or think converting is possible or not?
Answers
Anything is possible, but on a 2001 Polo, it’s certainly going to be ’beyond economical repair’ unless you can find a suitable, matching gearbox. There is a VW EAR transmission on ebay at the moment, but at £176 it’s still probably too much to spend. From the wording of your question, you’re also suggesting that you need to change the engine too: If that’s the case, I’d certainly scrap the car rather than spend several hundred pounds on it - John Greenslade from Powys

I have a VW Polo 6n2, when driving it, it starts to make a loud rattling noise. If I then turn the engine off and try to start it again it turns over for a while and then eventually fires up its then revving by itself between 2000-3000 rpm without me touching the throttle. Then when I slow down and take my foot off the accelerator the engine cuts out?

Hi, I am driving Volkswagen Polo Playa 1.4 millenium dashboard. Two weeks ago the car was cutting out when I accelerated from first gear and when I tried second gear it stopped. I found out that rats have eaten the wires that go to the injectors so I tried to patch the wires and the car seemed to be okay for about a week. After a week the same problem started again but it was not the same as before, it does it often when I release the clutch quickly and now a pint of oil won`t even last a week. Should I change all the filters and the pumps or should I buy new injector hannes?

Hi, my Volkswagen Polo failed it`s MOT due to the brake pads. I had that problem fixed and since then when I turn the ignition on it makes a beeping noise then stops. I`ve also noticed that the car feels different, the clutch seems to be high and the car just sounds and feels different. Also there`s a spanner flashing in the mileage box. Do I just need to take it for a service? It`s a 2003 1.4 tdi diesel Polo which has done about 62,000 miles. Thanks.

Hey guys. I bought a second hand automatic 2000 Volkswagen Polo 16V from Japan last year. It has been working fine and I’ve only had to replace the water pump recently, although I have been told I need to replace the throttle body, (the car used to stall at some point). Today I had problems starting it. Nothing happens in the engine when I turn the key, except that there is a rattle noise in the engine. The meters on the panel rattle as well and the lights flicker for a short while. There`s also that warning beep sometimes. It has happened once about a month ago and it was because I had switched the AC on, (since my mechanic tried to "fix" the stalling problem, turning on the AC makes the engine quite weak and sometimes it just goes off). When it did I waited a short while and the car started again. No problems after that until today. When it happened the first time today I jump-started it, (after a few unsuccessful tries), it miraculously started and I drove around fine. But the second time it refused to start. The battery is okay. What could the problem be? Please help. (1.4 16V)

Hi. I am a mechanic and one of my new customers has a 2005 Volkswagen Polo. I noticed before the service the car is pinging. Hi, I left my Volkswagen Polo for a few weeks over Christmas. I came back and both of the rear wheels have locked. When this has happened previously I have driven forward and back a few times and it has released it, but that is not working this time. I think the brake shoes are welded to the brake drum. Has anyone else had this problem or know how I can fix it? Am I going to have to get it picked up? Any ideas would really be appreciated. Thanks.

The Polo’s brake discs have a high iron content, thus they rust/corrode very quickly when left unused, esp in cold, damp weather. If the brakes when free when rocking the car back & forth with the car turned on and in gear, then try getting someone to tow the car backwards or forwards with a more powerful car (4 x 4), that should free them... failing that then you’ll probably need to get the front of the car jacked up, remove the wheels and physically hit the brake calipers and brake discs with a hammer or similiar to free them!!! Answers
Your battery will possibly discharge and become flat and your brake discs/calipers will probably bind/stick due to rust/corrosion on the brake discs (they’ve got a high iron content)... unfortunately there isn’t a lot you can do about it if the car is parked on the street other than get someone to start up the car every week and move the car... preferably for a short run to get the engine warmed up and battery charged and also to free up the brakes... Hi Owen, my understanding is that the Polo’s springs are kind of "weak" and therefore you cannot really have a weight at the back. Answers
Polo’s are notorious for leaking from the rear light clusters, the water usually pools into the spare wheel well and at it’s worst causes the boot carpet and rear seats to get damp/wet. This also causes a lot of condensation inside the car which won’t appear until the car cools down. If your suffering from ice inside the car then I suggest that your car has began to leak and that you may have water in the spare wheel well. The leak can be sorted by removing both light clusters and by running silicone rubber around where the original rubber seal is - Martin Hardie from Aberdeenshire

Hi. I’ve got a 2000 Polo Classic 1.8 and had a similar problem on drivers door. I found the black tube carring the cables for electric windows, mirrors and cetral locking had come loose. All it needed was to be fastened by twisting it together to lock it. Don’t know if it is the same problem on your car but if it is, it is a cheap fix. Check it first before trying an auto electrician. The tube is between the door hinges. Good luck - Jon Foster from South Africa

Hi, my Volkswagen Polo 1.4 16 has been playing up for the last 3 months now. First the ignition igniter packed up and I changed it. Then a couple of weeks later the central locking unit on the driver`s door wouldn’t lock. I could only lock and unlock from the passenger door. More recently the driver`s window wouldn’t open and when it did it wouldn’t open fully, but I have been unable to close it. Then on Thursday the car just stopped and I am unable to start it. I have checked all the fuses and the only one which had blown was the one for the driver`s window. After changing the fuse the window closed, but when I tried to open it again, the fuse blew. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Any ideas? Kind Regards.

My Volkswagen Polo Playa TDi 8yrs old has been experiencing the following intermittent issue during the last few months. The hydraulics light (yellow steering wheel) comes on and soon after I no longer have power steering. The ABS and handbrake lights come on which can either stay on after restarting and driving, or after driving a few metres will go off again. The power steering is the biggest concern as this can happen anytime while driving. Kilometers reset each time the hydraulics light goes on. Twice I was unable to unlock the car with my remote and used the key. No buttons on the driver`s door would work so I had to start the car up for all doors to unlock. This is very frustrating. What can the cause be?

Hi Tasneem. Did you get a response from your query? I’m having the exactly same problem with my 2008 Polo Comfortline! My car has also cut out a few times, resets everything back to zero, been unable to lock/unlock car etc. Been to a few places that have done tests on the computer system, checked the battery and the alternator and no faults are showing. My dad suggested I try the spare key because someone at work had a similar problem. I have been using my spare key for a few days now and "touch wood" my car seems to be fine now and none of the warning lights have come on. Lets hope the warning lights stay off and my steering doesn’t cut out again in the middle of the road! Lynn Clark from South Africa
Hi Lynn. No, no-one replied. I took the car to a mechanic, who ran a diagnostic test. The results of the test indicated low signal for the Power Steering and Braking system. He kept the car a few hours, and told me several wires had become loose. These had to be soldered back. That was a Monday. Tuesday, no problems. Wednesday and Friday of this same week, the problem recurred. Then all was going good for a week, and yesterday, lo and behold, it happened again. I haven’t tried the spare key though... I am having the same problem!!! Can anyone help? Catherine Duffy from Ireland
This was happening to mine a 2003 FSI. I was getting a wet boot and rear seat every time it rained. I pulled out the rear lights and they were soaked inside. I dried them out and then used silicon sealant to reseal the lights to the bodywork and the seals on the lights. I have had no problems since - Paul Prescott from Lancashire
Hi, we had this problem too. It was the seals around the light unit. We resealed them, but still had a problem. After sitting in the boot, whilst my husband poured water over the car, we found that water was dripping onto the lighting cables. From there it dripped into the boot, and travelled back to the rear seats. We used cable ties to adjust the lighting wires, so that any drips miss them, dripping between the outer and inner body of the car, and then out through a small hole in the chassis. So far so good. Hope this helps - Wendy Rose from Cambridgeshire

Polo and Golf generally have a breather box located at rear of engine (only visible viewed from below) this has a tendency to clog up with oil and carbon soot. Solution is to dismantle, blow out using industrial cleaning substance. The other symptom is throttle body (air intake flap) should be cleansed during annual service. Alternatively replace complete breather box and clean throttle body (very common issue) - Defoe Shainyshainy from England

Ask your dealer to provide the radio code of your car, should work out with the 4 digit radio code, if you have it`s fine. Then on your radio there are numbers from 1-6, in most cases the first digit number of your code must be punched on no. 1 on radio, then follows the other numbers e.g 2345 as code. You punch twice on number 1 on the radio, three times on number 2, four times on number 3, five times on number 4 on radio, then press fast forward button for few seconds and your radio should work - Andrew Makola from South Africa

They also state that the heat from the headlights should dry it up, but this never happens. I only purchased the car in Nov 2012 and I’m told this problem isn’t covered by the warranty. Hi Deb. You bought the whole car from them new so the whole car is under warranty. If the car is under three months old that sort of service info is quite ridiculous, don’t accept it. Make a scene and tell them you want to see someone higher as you want a replacement car or just go to VAG Volkswagon Audi Group, they will be falling over themselves to help you. By the way the misting up is on the inside isn’t it? Brent Trowbridge from Surrey
Remove the lamp covers on the rear of the lamp units, leave them off for a week or two, drive normally with lights on this will dry them out and the condensation will have an escape route then when completely dry replace covers to stop dirt ingress. This should solve the immediate problem but not how the water got in in the first place - that one is for VW. Hope this helps - Lance Driscoll from Dorset
I had a similar problem with the offside fog light on a 2012 1.2 TSI. The dealer supposedly cleared it but it re-misted within 10mins. I said they had to change it under warranty. My friend`s 3 cyl 1.2 Volkswagen Polo had his car`s valve timing chain repaired as well as all the valves in the cylinder head. The car now starts but there is an oil level alarm on. The mechanic now says that he will have to replace the oil pump as well? There was never a problem with low or no oil pressure before the chain slipped.. Is it possible that the head gasket was incorrectly installed? How can the oil pump delivery be tested? My friend is Chinese and has no mechanical knowledge at all so please help. Thank you. (3 door with a/c)
Answers
There are many reasons for this case. If the oil pump underneath was tampered with, you need to replace it`s gasket and pour clean oil on the pump itself and pump it manually to gasp the oil until no air is visible in the oil chamber, then replace immediately. Secondly you can loosen the oil pump, start the car and observe the leakage from the oil seal. If oil comes out tighten it and switch off the car, retighten again and check the display light after 2 or 3 minutes - Andrew Makola from South Africa

By the sounds of it you require a new gear box, which could be rather costly. As for the petrol gage I had this with my old Polo, it’s because of all the residue in the petrol tank which has built up over years. Try something like red ex and see if that clears it out - Alastair Spokes from England

Hey guys. A couple of weeks ago my Volkswagen Polo`s engine management light came on but my car`s performance didn’t change and a couple of days after that it went off and was running fine. I was just driving home there and the car started to judder and the engine light came on. The car had hardly any power in it, even with the foot to the floor so I pulled over, turned the engine off and back on again and everything seems fine. Do you think this could have been a clog somewhere that’s sorted itself or something to worry about? Cheers guys.

Hi, I have a problem with my Volkswagen Polo`s wipers. They’re on constantly. The heater radiator is leaking in your vehicle, you have 2 options. The dashboard has to come out, you won’t be able to do it yourself you need to get a VW mechanic or option 2 is to buy a bent copper pipe and transfer pipes that go to heater radiator (can be seen at back of intake manifold) but you won’t be able to get the heater to work inside the car but car won’t overheat - Joe Moodley from South Africa

Just a guess here, but the spanner usually inicates that a service is due. The garage probably forgot to reset the service indication, or if not a VW garage, they might not have the equipment. Oil lamp indicating however, usually tends to be bad bad bad! Any clunking, hard clicking or rattling noises at all, and I’d not start that car till a garage have had a look. Electrical for sure. Hard to say exactly what part malfunctions, but most likely its some part of the ignition system. Also, check if the engine cover thats supposed to be underneath the engine was re-fitted when the sump was fixed. I recently bought a Volkswagen Polo classic 1.6i and it performs like no other 1.6i Polo’s, might it be chipped, because it`s really heavy on fuel?
Answers
Very very doubtful, as your Polo does not come turbocharged. Chipping a NA (naturally aspirated) engine gives you next to no advantage whatsoever. Chipping also generally INCREASES fuel efficiency. It will be quite obvious if the previous owner have tuned the engine however, allthough I still doubt it as tuning a NA engine will cost you about 100 Euro per horsepower gained! Open the bonnet and see if it has a custom, conical, airfilter fitted. If it doesn’t, it’s fairly safe to assume it’s not tuned - Johan Karlsson from Sweden

Answers
If the engine turns over just fine with your own battery, quick and nice, then it’s something else. However, if the engine does NOT turn over, or does so slowly with alot of effort, then either your battery is broken, or your generator is not charging it enough. Try borrowing a battery from someone. Also, if possible, measure the voltage across battery + and ground (not the ground you are standing on, but the chassis of your car. Somewhere without paint) first with the car off, then with the car running. It should show a fairly steady voltage, somewhere between 13-14.7V with the car running, If it’s less, your generator is broken. If it doesn’t really change between car off/car on, then your generator is broken - Johan Karlsson from Sweden

I fitted a new petrol pump on my Volkswagen Polo but the petrol reading is always faulty. What could the problem be? Also there is an unbearable smell of gas when I drive although the car does not leak anywhere, what could the cause be? My engine also vibrates excessively when it`s on idle but when I tap on the accelerator it stops. What could the problem be?
Answers
Smell of gas = Leakage, there is no other way for gas fumes to get into the car. Not familiar with the gas pump of a Polo specifically, but I’m guessing it’s an internal pump, mounted from the top of the fueltank down. In this case the seal between the pump and the tank is faulty. Driving along in gas-fumes is dangeorus, worst case is you pass out and run someone over. Or front another vehicle. Vibrations is very likely worn engine mounts, not the metal mount, but the rubbery part between the engine and the chassis. I have no idea what those are called in English. Engine bushings? Anyways, if the car seems "jumpy" or if it kinda twitches and clunks when you drive along slowly, then depress the clutch, it’s the rubber mounts. It feels like a slight play in the drivetrain - Johan Karlsson from Sweden

I have a Volkswagen Polo 2001 hatchback and the temperature indicator just sits at zero, even if the engine is running. Then after a while, maybe after traveling 20km, it jumps to 70 degrees. Sometimes it works properly, sometimes it doesn’t. Is this normal?
Answers
Before the water in the engine hits a certain temp, its only circlulated locally, then a thermostat opens and lets the water flow freely through the radiator. If your temp-sensor is in the radiator it wont show any engine temp at all, till the thermostat opens. However 20km seems like a long time, remove your thermostat and pop it into a pot of water, put a thermometer in there and see at what degrees it opens, its made of a bi-metal, so it automatically opens at a certain temp. Sometimes however, it breaks. Or just buy a new one, they’re really really cheap. Id say a coupe of euros - Johan Karlsson from Sweden
Your temperature sender switch is gone. It costs between R100-R300. It can be fitted yourself. It is found were the highest radiator pipe comes to the front of your engine. Just unclip the lug then remove the old switch and put in the new one - Lucian from South Africa

Firstly when it rains the door seals are wet and there is water on the internal metal bodywork with pooling on the door sills. My Volkswagen Polo`s blue instrument illumination has failed. Is this due to fuse or bulb or does it need to be garaged to fix?
Answers
The lights are off in my neighbours kitchen! Are his bulbs broken, or did a fuse pop? or are they simply turned off? Impossible to say without going there and having a look, right? Step one, before you even start asking about it, would be for you to check your fuses yourself. This is very very easy, and something you’re kinda supposed to be able to do. If you dont know where they’re located, dont worry, thats why you have an instruction manual. The fuses themselves can be a bit fiddly to pull out, atleast for me who got big fat sausage-fingers, but it’ll still only take seconds. If checking for a blown fuse turns out to be too complicated, and i really doubt it will be, drive to a garage and prepare to get laughed at. If not to your face, then behind your back. I’m not trying to be an asshole here, but this stuff is so basic that if you’re unable to do it, you shouldnt be driving. Period. Anyone able to safely navigate the roads can check for broken fuses. If all relevant fuses are ok, then its 99.9% certain that a bulb or two have broken. I’d reccomend letting someone with some kind of mechanical skills replace them, if you dont want to pay a crapload of money to let a garage fix it. Also, stick by his or her side while he/she does it, then you’ll be able to fix it yourself next time it happens. And thats a goood feeling =) Johan Karlsson from Sweden

I was hoping that it would reach 100 km/h in at least ten seconds but the first gear is notably slower than any other car make, but it can reach any speed in a free way. Please can anybody help? I have recently serviced my Volkswagen Polo to reduce petrol consumption. It currenty consumed one litre every kilometre I drive on a straight road. Please advise what else can I do to fix the problem? The second problem is my engine vibrates each time it is running. I am told this is not normal. What can I do to fix this and are the two problems related? (1.8)

I have recently serviced my Volkswagen Polo hoping it would reduce petrol consumption. However there seems to be no improvement as my car’s petrol consumption per kilometer is 9 l/km. What is the general petrol consumption for similar cars? (1.8 south african make)
Answers
In city traffic: 0.8-0.9 litres of petrol for every 10km travelled. Highway: 0.65 litres of petrol for every 10km travelled. #Check that you have the right airpreassure in your tires. #Check that the wheels can roll freely, so no brakes are catching. #Check that the engine is running on all cylinders, if it doesent it vibrates alot, and is also slow, and you have to use more throttle, hence higher fuel comsumption. You can test this by having the engine running, then removing the wires to the sparkplugs, one at a time, listening if the engine all of a sudden runs bad. If it does, then that cylinder is working fine. Re-attach the wire, and pull another one. If there is no change at all in how the engine runs when you pull a wire, then *something* is wrong with that cylinder, check sparkplugs, wires, and compression - Johan Karlsson from Sweden

My Volkswagen Polo`s Power Assisted Steering Warning light comes on intermittantly and I lose the PAS. If I turn the engine off and restart it the warning light goes off and I have the PAS working again. This can happen twice in one short journey or not happen for a few days. Also at different times the brake and ABS warning lights come on together and bleep before going out again. The brake fluid level is fine and was changed in 2011 so isn’t due to be changed again until 2012. This also happens only occasionally. Can anyone please help with either of these problems? I am not getting a spark on the coil in my Volkswagen Polo. There`s no power coming to the coil. Any suggestions?
Answers
Les, I had this same problem with my Jetta and it wouldn`t start, it was swinging one way. On your coil (situated on the chest of your car you will find two plug points, one is a 3-pin plug on your right and the other is a one pin going to your distributor. Remove your distributor, remove your one pin plug on your coil and ask someone to place it near a metal part of your car/engine and turn your distributor by hand on the helical gear, noting the spark mass. If it`s not showing or shows less then change the coil. If all this is too hard then take your coil to an auto electrician so he tests it. Hope it helps - Sandile Ngubo from South Africa

My Volkswagen Polo`s engine management light is on but the car runs fine. What should I do?
Answers
The engine management light can mean a lot of things. If you take it to a dealer they can plug the car into the computer and read the fault code that’s causing it. They usually charge quite a bit for this service. I got stung by a dealer as my EPC light and then the exhaust light came on. It turned out it was just a faulty brake light switch. It may be worth checking to see if your brake lights are working before letting a dealer plug it into the computer. A new switch costs about a tenner - Rich from England

No solution, but I send my commiserations! My VW Golf Plus -4 years old started with such a problem in May 2012 -to cut a long story short, now both the front and rear are locked tight shut, except that the rear door intermittently opens! It is in the VW garage as I write and all they have suggested is putting a new lock in the front passenger door-costing around £400. They have no idea if it will cure the problem affecting the back door too, or whether by doing it, they may compromise the new lock as it may be an electronic fault. Today they are running diagnostics. Anyone else? - Gillian Porter from Lancashire

Hi. My daughter is learning to drive and bought herself a 2003 Volkswagen Polo from a dealer. It came with a 3 month warranty which will run out in the next 2 weeks. She didn’t drive it for the first two weeks as she was waiting until the end of the month to get her car tax. Since driving it though she has had the driver wiper arm head replaced, a new battery, a new bonnet release handle, a new coil pack, numerous occasions where the engine warning light has come on and now her driver`s side headlight is out, for which I got pulled over by the police and breathalysed after returning from a session teaching her to drive. I have had a problem with my Volkswagen Polo recently. It has been into the garage but they can’t find anything wrong with it now, athough it still has the problem so I was just wondering if anyone woud be able to help. When I have been driving at night on two occasions, when the revs on my car go low the engine cuts out and the battery light comes on. The only way to start it again is to rev it a lot when turning the ignition on and to keep it running it needs to stay in a low gear with high revs. It seems to only do this when it is dark and I have my lights on, as it will sit in the garage quite nicely with them reving it up and just leaving it to tick by itself and it doesn’t cut out then. Any help or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. Any ideas please? Thanks.

It could be that your battery isn’t holding any charge so when you put extra loading on the electrics, such as at night, the battery voltage falls and the engine cuts out. You need to get it checked. Could be your idle valve or sensor just needs replacing. Had the same problem when slowing down and stopping, the car would cut out or turn back on itself. Cheeky dealers, whom my parents bought the car off, had removed the engine management light so I hadn’t a clue. Didn’t set me back that much, had my timing belt changed also, all for £250. Hope that helps - Pavan from England

I am having trouble with the Automatic gear change on my Volkswagen Polo. It will change gear when revs reach 30 rpm +. I`ve noticed that it does this when the engine has warmed up. There is a slight jerk when gears change. Also some mornings the rpm will tick over on 5 when it should be ticking over on 10 rpm. This causes bad performance and ’might’ have something to do with slow gear change. My local garage say there is nothing wrong with the car, but I dont believe them. Volkswagen Polo 1.9TDi 74KW, 2006 model sedan. Instrument cluster will reset, all lights come on sometimes with a loud beep sometimes with the horn also. It started first when I turn steering wheel to max either side then the airbag light will come on and I will loose power steering, then when switch off and restart all is fine but all counters are reset on the instrument cluster. Most recent incident when I was driving on highway and slacking off to take an exit then all the lights on dash was lit, lost power steering and loud beeping and I switched off engine and restarted (while freeing at high speed) then all OK again. Seems to happen more frequently but intermittent.

I had the same problem after I had my car serviced, the problem with the power steering was that the signal to the power steering pump was set to high and the pump cut out because it was receiving an incorrect signal, the instruments reseting was found that alot of the ground wires was loose, for some reason the abs sensor was also not adjusted correctly which made the abs light come on as well. I took the car to another service centre and they adjusted the abs sensor and the signal to the pump and checked all my wirring - had no problems since - Christiaan from South Africa

The car has not been run for 3 years. When I turn the car over with the key there’s no petrol movement. I have checked flow to the injectors and there’s nothing coming from the pipe. I checked the relay which is fine. Next to check is the fuel pump in tank. Can you think of anything else, transponder chip maybe? The car is turning over. Thanks. (1.4cl petrol auto)
Answers
After not running for 3 years I’d be surprised if the petrol in the tank and fuel system hadn’t gone ’off’ and turned to a gel/varnish. There must be a block somewhere so your whole fuel system will need to be cleared using a carb cleaner/de-greaser type solvent, esp the carburators (old Polo) or fuel injection system (newer Polos). That includes replacing any fuel filters, clearing or replacing fuel pipes, cleaning/replacing the fuel pump and cleaning/replacing the carbs or fuel injection system. The easiest and quickest option would be to try cleaning out the fuel pump, filets and and carbs/fuel inj system... and top up your petrol tank with clean, fresh petrol... if you can get fresh petrol through the entire system them you’ll probably clear any gel/varnishing thats left and the car will start... it might run a bit roughly till all the crap is gone! How much will it cost to fix a blown top/head gasket on a 2011 Volkswagen Polo?
Answers
Janet, the easiest way to tell is to look at the gear stick. If it has numbers on it it’s most likely a manual, if it has letters such as P N D R it’s an automatic. The difference between an auto and a semi-auto is the way in which the gears are selected. In a semi-auto, the driver selects the gear via a paddle or toggle and the engine management system (EMS) actually changes the gear based on the engine rpm etc. In a full auto, the EMS changes the gear with no input from the driver - Rich from England

Obviously you know how to change a turbo but before you actually run the engine you have to crank it for about 30 secs to allow oil to lubricate the turbochargers components so as for it not to blow, leave for a minute then drive steadily for the first 1,000 - 2,500 miles and don’t try and do it when the engine is hot! Is it normal for the car to roll back when stopped on an incline? Holding the car on the brake, and moving to accelerate away, (e.g. traffic lights in a hill) the car distinctly rolls backwards, usually inches, but it feels a lot more, before engaging in forward motion. No other autobox seems to suffer roll back, but the DSG is a new format autobox with two dry clutches. Is this normal or is this a fault? Any help appreciated. (1.4 SE / 7 speed DSG)

It’s a quirk of the suspension design. i.e the rear-end is suspended on wish bones which are somewhat like scissors which run longitudinally down the body. When you stop the vehicle and apply the handbrake which stops the wheels the wheels turning, the vehicle’s weight cause the chassis to roll back slightly. As the wheels are locked by the handbrake, the vehicle’s weight transfers to the wishbones which causes them to open slightly, thus causing the vehicle to rise slightly at the back. When you come to move away, the front wheel drive pulls the weight forward. This causes wishbones to settle down which gives the impression the vehicle is rolling slightly backwards. There really is no cure for this phenomena other than the horrendous method of holding it on the clutch, which will prove to be ridiculously expensive - Brian Johnson from Cheshire
