My hitherto very reliable old Volkswagen Passat 95 has developed an intermittent starting fault that is extremely irritating. This has been happening with increasing frequency over the last year or so. The engine will start and then shut down after a second. Sometimes it will start at a subsequent turning of the key sometimes not. Interestingly it will always start if 1st gear is engaged and the car cranked forward on the ignition. Almost as if the voltage drop caused by the increased demand to the starter motor has something to do with it. Do any of you motor enthusiasts out there have suggestions as to what may be causing the problem? (CL TDI)

Hi I’ve just bought my VW Passat 2007 estate 2.0TDI. The car is absolutely great! The only problem I’m facing is that the keys of the car are electrical so sometimes I can open my car and sometimes it decides not to open therefore I have to keep hold of the open lock button so the windows can roll down and I can open the car from the inside handle. Can you suggest what I can do or what the problem is? Thank you, Bill.

I have a 2008 Volkswagen Passat Estate Bluemotion diesel. It has just started stopping - there’s are no lights coming up on the dash when I try to start it. It keeps turning over but won’t start. It’s when I put the jump leads on and keep turning it over it starts. I have had the brain checked and there’s nothing coming up. It runs for a few days and the same thing happens again. You would think it wasn’t getting diesel. Has anybody got any ideas?

The car is fine but as of yesterday the glow plug sign started flashing an would not go over 40mph. Can anyone help?

Answers

First thing is to get a diagnostic check to see which gow plug is at fault, you can then remove the glow plug and check to see if working correctly by earthing the body of the glow plug out and putting power to the top of the plug (12v). If the lower part glows (do not touch as will be very hot) then you know the glow plug is ok and will more than likely be a fault with the wiring loom to that glow plug... a modified loom is available from VW ( it’s a common fault). Hope this helps... Spencer Clarke from Surrey
