Volkswagen Crafter

Hello, I am reading this forum because I have unfortunately bought this problem with 4 wheels. My VW Crafter 35 plate 2008 is consuming a lot of oil (+/- 2 /3 litres oil per 400km). I replaced the turbo for a new one and there continues to be a lot of smoke (white) and consuming a lot of oil. I replaced everything inside the engine. I used the van and it`s still consuming oil with a lot of white smoke. I don`t know what more should I do? Is cleaning the catalyser the solution? Would this small thing (clean the catalyser) resolve the problem?I am getting crazy with this van and spend a lot os money in this car.It would be grate is someone that had the same problem tell me the best way to resolve this problem.Filipe - Portugal

I bought my Crafter recovery truck 2.5 2007 109bhp and when I start from cold there`s a rattle, but when I keep revs up for a few minutes it goes, but when steering is on full left or right lock it comes back. It sounds like a fan belt tensioner but I`m not 100% sure? Also I`ve got a slight oil leak which seems to be by the inlet manifold?

Hi! I just bought seven months ago VW Crafter MWB-2.5 L diesel and I have one problem ,and I cannot fixed,I got advice for over six mechanics,I done what the advice me to change, but the problems still be as was before. When the engine is running smoke heavily come out on blue/white with gas smell.I change EGR valve ,Coolant exhaust box,I regenerate DPF,and nothing is change, exhaust temperature sensor.Could you tel me what problems could have please?

I had same problem it turned out a piece of the catalaictic converter had broken off and was stuck in the exhaust system. Dale Woolley from Isle of Anglesey

Just worth checking - has a previous owner helpfully 'gutted' your DPF but failed to have the engine management remapped to 'turn off' the DPF feature? The DPF requires unburnt fuel to be injected into the exhaust system (which then burns on the DPF matrix) but if that matrix is missing that fuel will simply vapourise and come out the exhaust as heavy, smelly blue/white smoke. I have a 56 plate Crafter, which is experiencing a current drain somewhere, resulting in a flat battery after the vehicle has been stood for, say, 4 days. I've noticed that the radio/CD player will turn on for a couple of seconds every minute or so, regardless of whether the van is running or not. Nobody at my local VW dealer can shed any light on why it does this - any ideas folks?

Hi I bought a vw crafter 2007 163 bhp lwb van about a month ago 129,000 miles and im finding its using a lot of fuel , I drive it mainly motorway at a steady 58 to 62 mph and after filling the tank depending on fuel prices its average tank cost is £94.00 , the worst has been 370 miles to a tank and that was mixed driving ie country roads and motorway , and I also find its gutless on hills , I have to drop from 6th to 3rd some times , im not carrying a lot of weight at all , ive just had a Mercedes sprinter 2003 lwb 313 cdi for 4 years and that was excellent on fuel power everything on average it would return 600 miles for £110.00 , the best the crafter has done is 450 miles to a tank .. im totally gutted and wishing I had not got one now .. I hope you could throw me some ideas please before I sell it ... very frustrating .... Regards Darren

We had this same issue... 1st check your turbo and turbo pipes as that's the most likely. then try the DPF... and last but not least, get the engine/pistons checked for pressure (although that's more likely to affect oil consumption than fuel) Mark Beaton from Lancashire

Hi, in ref to your fuel consumption, I just sold my 315 Sprinter. I got 600mls plus, reason it had a 100 ltr tank. Unless spec from the original log book you will have to remember if you were putting say 80+lts in your old Sprinter. Your VW will only have a 75 ltr tank. My bluetooth 109 13plate Crafter returns 520mls on about 70ltrs, about 35 to the gallon, no guts up hills but I still think a better van than Merc. colin wilson from Kent

I have a 2007 Crafter and the side lights, front only, have stopped working. All other lights are good. Also I have no interior lights which is an older fault. Start of the front light issue a fault light appeared on the dash but all lights were working. Now the front lights (side) are not coming on. Bulbs are good, fuses all look good. Any suggestions?

My van has 125k on the clock. Just bought second hand. I am having to top up the engine oil weekly. there are no leaks. Exhaust looks normal. I have heard Crafters to use oil normally and so is expected to top up every week. Is that correct?

Answers

Mine has done 265000, didn't use a drop of oil until 220,000km service, has used between 500ml to 1l a week every since. I do about 2000km a week. Apparently this is a lambda sensor issue, but there are 4 of them so as to which one is the challenge. change the oil to a full synthetic 10w 40. diesel. must be full synthetic. Martin from Australia

It was lambda sensor, I replaced it and now I'm only using 400ml per 2000kms as opposed to 2 litres per 2000kms. Martin from Australia

Where was the lambda sensor? We have same problem. Thanks Wendy from Isle of Wight

Despite spending hours searching I cannot find the sensor/switch that enables the interior lights and dashboard door warning for the side sliding door, the back doors, driver and passenger doors work fine. The sliding side door does not put a warning on the dashboard and does not enable the load space lighting. I really need the load area lights to come on when the side door is opened and it would be very nice to have a dash warning - the door isn't the easiest in the world to get fully closed.

Answers

Answered my own question. The switch / sensor is in the door lock itself, I removed the ply lining and inner panel and the door harness was coiled up inside - had been cut. Removed the load step and the cable guide etc is missing - wired it all back up temporarily and it all works - the worrying thing is that in the 6 months I've had the van the side door has never locked since the harness carries the signal for that too - and I never checked it. Some people should not be allowed near tools .... Self from Cheshire

Hi all My crafter alarm goes off at least twice a week in the early hours of the morning, can't seam to find the reason why????

Answers

I'd pop the roof lighting module out and check for leaks from the roof mounted aerial, the rubber / seal doesn't seem to be the best quality and rots / perishes. When it leaks it drips straight down onto the alarm control module. The light fitting is a bit fiddly to get out, hard to describe how but it is all clips, many of which can be very 'tight'. Replacing the aerial seal is made difficult by its location - it is really a two man job - one outside and one inside, three people if you have somebody securing the steps - because to reach it outside you will need some good high steps. You could try disarming the interior sensors for a week, then the anti tow sensors for a week and see if it stops going off - at least you'll know which sensors are causing it. Self from Cheshire

Hi, I have a Crafter. I changed the valve of the cylinder head and reinstalled the head, did the two timing of the cam belt but after that it will not start. When I use the 'QUICK START MOLYKOTE' it does start and cuts off once I stop using the molykote. It seems the injectors are not pumping fuel, what might be the cause? It was all fine before it broke the cambelt, please help?

I have a 2007 Crafter truck which had a brake fade issue. If you push on the brake peddle it continually sinks to the floor. So i tried to bleed the brakes first to get a solid peddle but had no luck. So I replaced the brake master cylinder to see if that would fix it but had no luck either after bleeding the brakes with the truck running. If you turn the truck off and push on the peddle it is solid and stops. But start the truck up and it starts going to the floor again. What do you think it could be maybe the ABS?
