Volkswagen Caddy Maxi 2011

Hi, my Volkswagen Caddy maxi 1.6tdi, 2011, when labouring as normal, rev counter can increase up to 1 for no reason. Also when driving sometimes it won’t go below 1 and I can smell the engine overheating. I have topped it up with coolant a few times. Any further ideas?
