Volkswagen Bora

Please help car won't start. It has power but when I turn the key no response from starter motor. It worked fine but when I tried to start again a few seconds later it was dead. I have tried tapping starter motor as thought maybe it was stuck but still no joy. I have plugged obd cad diagnosis in and no faults have shown. Sounds as if it's getting no spark and no response from starter. All advice is welcomed.

Answers

Check that the exciter cable isn't damaged. This is the black thin wire that goes to the top of the starter motor. To access it you will need to remove the battery cover and tray. Steve from Durham

Sounds like a fuel mixture problem, if it's a non-turbo car. I'd suspect the MAF sensor, or an inlet leak from the MAF to the manifold. Laing Wood from New Zealand

So if the key actions the locks like it going to open, but the motors don't activate, then it has to be an electrical issue. But if you cant get in how can you check this further. You my friend need to get to know a car thief who's handy with a coat hanger! simon from Buckinghamshire

My engine workshop light came on while driving, then the steering started shuddering followed by a cracking noise. Then it wouldn't drive and had to stop. Any thoughts on the cause?

Answers

sounds as if your power steering pump has snapped a vane and siezed as low on fluid. whining noises on turning would confirm this before failure. leaking pipes or steering rack would cause the loss of fluid. simon from Buckinghamshire

Bruce Robertson, East Lothian

Volkswagen Bora

My Bora has decided of late that it won`t start. The engine turns as though trying to start but won`t always start first time. This is not a consistent problem and can be quite erratic. For example today I drive to work, go to leave at lunchtime and it takes a good few seconds to start. I drive back from lunch fine, but decided to check again and the car would take its time starting but would fall out once the revs dropped. I then start it again, keeping the revs at between 1 and 2K, let it drop and it`s fine. I changed the fuel filter last week when it was happening so I can rule that out. There are no error messages, or errors when plugged in to check the electronics. I have been told this could be the lift pump, or indeed a misaligned crankshaft sensor. Any thoughts? I don't want to start investigating a fuel issue... Thanks in advance, Bruce

Is your car diesel or petrol.Try charging the battery ,it may not be holding the charge especially in the cold weather ,when you are using your lights ,and a lot of heat. also the automatic choke could be going off to quickly.if you do not have a charger go to the likes of Halfords and they will test the battery ,and give you some free advice. I drove my Bora and didn't notice that the temperature had risen well over the halfway mark, normally it warns me to STOP and refill but this time around it didn't. I parked, switched off the engine and discovered that all the coolant was finished to the last drop. I had to put almost 10 ltrs of coolant in but it refused to start, it was just cranking and I was towed. What are the likely reasons causing it to refuse to start and what are the likely damages I caused?

Answers

you've had a leaking cooling system that you haven't caught in time, possibly even a head gasket leak if rebuilt poorly. now your engine is probably goosed! simon from Buckinghamshire

Hi, My Bora V5 2000 model has started a habit of flashing Stop and writing: "Oil press. Stop motor". When I stop the engine and start again, it does not show anymore then starts again after driving for few Kilometers. What's the cause of this or where does it lead to? Is it a dirty oil in the sump, oil filter problem or maybe the oil pump dying?
