My 2004 Vauxhall Zafira`s nearside rear door electric window keeps just dropping down automatically and won’t go back up. Even after an electrician checked it it worked a couple of times and suddenly, when I just unlocked the car with the key fob, the rear window dropped without the key being in the ignition and the window won’t go up. Can anyone advise?

My Vauxhall Zafira has a chronic windscreen misting up problem. I have just spent £100 on regassing the air conditioning and changing the pollen filter but there has been no improvement. There is very little air coming out of the front vents aimed at the base of the windscreen. Opening a front window has the desired effect but it`s unsuitable in heavy rain or when it`s freezing cold. Any suggestions? (1.8 Club Petrol Auto)

Hi. I`m having problems with the central locking on my Vauxhall Zafira. It only works with the key. I`ve tried changing the battery in the fob and I`ve put paper in it too but still no joy. Please can anyone help?

Try this... Unlock the car, get in, shut the door, turn on the ignition and within 10 seconds press and hold the lock button - the doors should lock, the fob should now work. If not, it is a faulty key - Alan from England

Hi. Please can anyone tell me how I can adjust the fuel level indicator in my Vauxhall Zafira and where it is located? I have a diesel and the dial and trip tell me that I`ve got fuel when I`m low but it has run out of fuel a few times now. Now the car is tilted to it`s left side. It has recently cost me an expensive pump job. If I could adjust the fuel indicator to show less diesel when I`m low so that I know when to fill up it would save me a lot of hassle. Please can someone help? (dti)

Hello. My Vauxhall Zafira 04 automatic diesel starts okay and it drives fine in Drive for about 10 seconds (through gear one and gear two) but then I get the spanner light. I can’t get it going again at a light unless I get out of ’Drive’ and use gear one and then gear two. When driving up to speed it continues fine. The scanner says code fault 715, which is the speed sensor but I’ve already changed it with no result, the fault code stays the same. Reverse drive is okay. Can anyone give me any advice? Much appreciated thanks. (Automatic Diesel Y20DTH)

Hello. My problem is that when I am driving along my Vauxhall Zafira will suddenly jerk back, sometimes a lot and sometimes only a little. This happens at all speeds. It stops if I put my foot on the accelerator or take my foot off it. I have replaced the coil pack and also put new plugs in. The EM light goes on and off on the dashboard but besides these problems the car runs fairly okay. However, these jerk backs are very annoying. Please can anyone help? Thankyou.

I am unable to open the tailgate on my Vauxhall Zafira even when the car is unlocked. All the other doors open fine. I have checked the rear windscreen washer and wipers and they are working fine. Is it likely to be a fuse or something more serious?

Answers

I had this at Christmas before last :/ Just come out of Asda with a trolley full of frozen food to get home, and couldn’t unlock the boot of the zafira, even when all other doors were open. Took it to Vauxhall dealership where they charged me 25 quid to replace a £1.03 fuse :( The reason they gave me was if using the windscreen washer when they are iced up, instead of burning out the motor, it blows a fuse instead. Hope this helps :) Smidge from Yorkshire

None of the brake lights on my Vauxhall Zafira are working. Both of the bulbs went and I changed them but still no joy. The fuse looked okay, but I’ve changed it anyway and still nothing. About a month ago, the automatic transmission got stuck in Park, and the dealer who was doing the repairs has been battling to get the part required. So, after having the car in their workshop all this time, they disabled the Shift Lock Sensor in the gear box so that the car can be driven and I got it back last week. Would this cause the brake lights not to work? (Elegance)

My 1.6 Vauxhall Zafira makes a constant high-pitched squealing noise from somewhere in the engine bay. I have been to a reputable garage and they could not give me a definitive answer to the cause of the noise. They did however say that the squealing reduced in pitch when the oil filler cap was off or the dipstick was out. They also believed that it may have been something to do with the catalytic converter. There is no power loss and the battery is not draining, however there has been a marked increase in oil use. I am using 5 litres of oil a month at the moment with no apparent leak or smoke from the exhaust. Can anyone please help? (1.6)

I took my Vauxhall Zafira to the garage to get rear brake disks and pads replaced. When I went to collect it, it wouldn’t start!! After a few days they told me it needed a new fuse box unit which will cost £350 apparently. Seems a bit excessive to me. They say it is a common fault. The mechanic told me he was "fiddling" with the fuses when replacing the discs and pads? Why would he need to do that? I think his "fiddling" is the reason the whole fuse box has blown. Can anyone shed any light on the problem. 4 weeks later and I am still waiting for my car! (1.9 tdi)

My Vauxhall Zafira, when driving, after a short while seems to be losing power, then all of a sudden it’s like being in a sports car. Also, if I put 20 pounds of fuel in getting 40miles? When taken cap off to put fuel in there is a long expel of air from tank. No faults are showing up on computer. When driving I’m light on accelerator pedal. Over the last 2 years I have changed the edu value and there is a hole in exhaust. I don’t know if it has a air mass meter on the 1.6 Club. Any help greatly appreciated.

Answers

There is one centimeter in diameter tube and that is in all cars made to let the air goes in the fuel tank, and in your case it is blocked. To find it and fix the fault it will cost lot of trouble , better to do is not to tight fuel cap all the way, and let the air enter - Choukri Kayal from France

My Zafira ’04 has started to display the engine management warning symbol. Clearly this is not that uncommon and at first it was unpredictable. But in last couple of days the characteristics have become predictable and so wondered if anyone can deduce the likely cause. The light comes on from cold only after about 1 minute. It then stays on (with reduced engine power evident) for 10 minutes. Turning ignition off/on does not clear it - maybe for 15 seconds. After 10 minutes the light then goes off and never comes back on during the journey. I can briefly turn off ignition and turn back on and light does not reappear. Leave the car a few hours or overnight and the problem reappears. I have been unable to read any codes from a cheap hand held reader and so have asked my local garage to see what they can read but this was not conclusive. But I really want to avoid trial and error fixes especially on a car this old. Suggestions and advice gratefully received!

Today the Timing Chain snapped (I don’t know how much damage has been done yet, but is likely to considerable). The car has only done 40,000 miles, and the oil is regularly checked. Vauxhall replaced the Fuel Pump Regulator 4 months ago as part of a recall (at no cost to me) and I don’t know if this has in any way contributed to the current problem...? I am having a problem with my 2001 reg Zafira when I start the motor and it is cold it struggles to keep revs, it wants to stall when you put the throttle down. It tries to stall but doesn’t, I have to wait a few minutes then it settles itself and is OK but when driving it pulls back at three and a half thousand reeves. I can’t get any more power but the rev counter stills goes up. I had diagnostics done as car and spanner comes up on the dash (albeit only sometimes) and they said exhaust too lean and 02 lumber sensor block one. I have had the sensor out and cleaned but still no difference. Any advice would be very welcome as I had it serviced 2,000 miles ago an have no idea what the problem can be...

Answers

Try cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor and the throttle body. They can get very dirty on old cars, especially if the air filter is not maintained. 1. Remove the air filter, check and replace if necessary. 2.Move along to the MAF which is next in line held by two large jubilee type clips and disconnect the sensor connection. The MAF is very delicate inside - thin wire filaments. Don’t drop it or touch it with anything, just spray the wires with electric contact cleaner (with no lubrication in it -ie not switch cleaner, not brake cleaner, not carburetor cleaner). Let it dry thoroughly before replacing. Note the small arrow on the side showing the direction of airflow. 3. Moving inwards, take off the next section of the air intake, disconnect the throttle sensor and black rubber breather tubes to reveal the throttle body and butterfly inside. It will probably be coated inside with carbon like deposits which should be removed by spraying carburetor cleaner or throttle body cleaner and wiping/brushing till clean. It doesn’t matter if the cleaner and gunk go down inside - it will be expelled when you start the engine. Also clean out the breather tubes which can get very dirty too. 4. Replace everything in reverse order. Of course it could be that you need a new lambda sensor or MAF or EGR valve. The advantage of doing this is that it only takes about half an hour and costs around £10 for the carb cleaner and the contact cleaner. It sounds more complicated than it actually is and all you need is a screwdriver for the clips plus the two cans of cleaner which you can get in Halfords - Bill from Ireland

I have taken my mass airflow sensor off. When I put it back on my traction control light came on. Now I have loss of power, can anyone help?

Answers

When you say taken it off, I assume you put it back on again. The engine will not run without the MAF. See my answer to Bill Harris re: cleaning the MAF, breather tubes and throttle body. The computer gets readings from these sensors and adjusts the running accordingly. Various fault codes can be triggered in a kind of domino effect and create running problems when it may just need a clean out. The traction control is a separate issue and is controlled via the ABS sensor on the top/back of the passenger side front hub. There are four sensors, one on each wheel hub, and the connectors often get very dirty and wet, sometimes leading to ABS/traction control warning lights and fault codes. Remove each wheel in turn, clean them up and inspect the wires for wear or damage. The sensor is built into the hub and cannot be replaced separately - Bill from Ireland

Over the last two weeks I noticed a considerable drop in my Vauxhall Zafira’s power. While driving on the M6 I heard a loud hissing coming from around the gearbox area (thinking I had a blow out... but no). I decided to take it ATS, who highlighted a split hose connected to the dpf filter. Great, all I need to do is get the hose replaced and everything will back to normal... NOT A CHANCE. Got a second opinion, they put me in touch with a garage whom could do the job. Anyway, like I said, severe drop in power, more noticeable when going up hill... not getting much highter than 40mph when on a slip road when joining the motorway. Tests were carried out and in the end the dpf was replaced. Road tests carried out, but still getting error codes on the EMS. Up to now the job has cost me £1,240, but still having problems with codes P0234- TURBO CHARGER BOOST PRESSURE.....??? and another code is P0380 GLOW PLUG DEVICE CIRCUIT??? ... Is there anyone out there with the knowledge of what these faults are and what the likely cost is to get it sorted. Also been told that these Zafira’s come with air inlet problems, and one other thing that occurs, especially when your sat at a junction waiting to go (rare occasions, or I would say it’s more frequent than it used to be), the revs rising and falling with a jerking movement! I was driving my 2004 automatic Vauxhall Zafira when I realised that my dashboard lights were not on and a fault light came on. I pulled into a petrol station to investigate the situation. I turned off the ignition, and then turned it back on again. I had no choice but to continue my short journey back home, which was 15 minutes away. When I put the car in drive it didn’t sound right, it sounded like I was struggling driving up a hill, or I was driving with the handbrake on. When I put on my indicator lights before turning, it wasn’t working. I also found out that my horn was not working when a car almost hit my car while reversing. I finally made it home. I am now looking for a solution for the problem.

I have got a Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 TDI on a 56 plate. I have a problem with the heater blowers working intermittently, it has gradually got worse over a period of about 2 months to the point they hardly work at all. When the problem initially started if I opened and closed the drivers door the blower would start working. This is not the case anymore and the blower just works randomly with no pattern to when it will work or not. Can someone advise if this sounds like the motor or maybe a resistor or something else? (1.9 Diesel TDI)

Answers

Hi. After lots of checking and rechecking with fault reappearing, I found a poor connection between red and white wires to the heater resistor pack. All output to motor at any speed has to go down red and white wire. The solution is to bridge the two red and white wires at the resistor pack with a link of same diameter wire. Use a 30 amp fused link if you are worried (as I did). No problem since. The first 10 amp fuse I used blew after a minute and the motor stopped proving that the link was the only route available for the current. I must have done this job five times before I solved it. Tip: In winter, do not let washer pipes or bottle freeze or tailgate will not open... on same fuse! - Tom Crye from Cheshire

I have an Opel/Vauxhall 2.0 DTI Zafira and the service light comes on the dash occasionally. When it does the car dies down and won’t go over 2,200rpm. When this happens I turn the car off and re-start it resulting in the service light going off. The car goes fine then until the light comes back on. What can the problem be? This happens even after the car has been serviced.

Answers

My Corsa dti 1.7 was doing same for months, I checked everything. I even replaced the turbo as it whistled but no change. Once the car and spanner light came on the car lost power, up hills would trigger it faster but would normally light would come on within 10 mins. So if your dti is the same, easy fix. When your clutch pedal is in normal position not pressed it is pressing your switch in so that will give you the location of the clutch pedal switch. Mine was unclipped so wasn’t touching pedal, I cable-tied it back on but still didn’t work so I took it back off and lubricated it and realised it’s on splines so I pulled it out as far as I could and placed it back into position the light came on once but must reset its self after that as I’ve had hassle-free motoring since. Still got the car and been 13 months with no light slowing me down. Forget EGR and vac sensors tried everything still got the parts in boot - Scott Adams from England

Hi Joe, I have the same problem at the moment. Apparently I need a sensor on the manifold but the mechanic can’t get this off at all. My 2007 Zafira (1.6 petrol) has just gone in to a main dealer with similar fault: ABS light on/flashing, loss of speedo, intermittent revs, loss of power and engine management light was also on. Bad news though, it was diagnosed as a leak over the fuse box - causing fuse box to short. £275 for part + vat + labour = £490. I have an automatic Opel Zafira 1.9 (Diesel). Once in a while, the engine emits white smoke continuously. When I turn off the ignition and restart, it stops then later starts again. I was asked to check the fuel filter and oil. I’ve worked on all that but the problem happens intermittently. What could be the problem and the possible solution? Thanks.

Answers

Engine warmer, I have the same with my Combo. If it’s the same and it smells of diesel, it’s actually by the front left wheel up and it’s a small exhaust port. I’m guessing the reason it is intermittent is due to the face. Sometimes the engine is warm and sometimes it’s cold. It’s pretty normal for all this so don’t worry. Simples - Daniel from Yorkshire

Just give it a gentle tap with a hammer, it is probably just the pressure of the brake piston holding it in place, but don’t forget when you’re replacing pads to unscrew the cap on the brake fluid reservoir then push the brake piston back to able your new pads to fit also a bit of brake grease on the back of pads to stop any squeeling noise when braking. Hi John, not sure if yours is a diesel but my 2ltr diesel did the same and it was a glow plug fault. Replaced and problem solved. A Vauxhall garage did it for a small charge, they put their hand held diagnostic computer into the socket behind the hand brake console and found the fault code that will have locked itself into the management system. Takes about 5 mins - Philip Carlini from Suffolk

Hi, I had same and was told it was the EGR valve. I gave it a good clean, still engine management light came on during the Diagnostics Test and this was saying it was the EGR valve. I put my fault on the web and a man told me to clean out the vent pipes on the right side of coilpack, one about 20mm in diameter and one about 15mm. I gave them a good clean, light went out - all good. So even with a Diagnostics Test it doesn’t tell all. I hope this will help, you may need help to find them. Does the car cut out completely? I had a similar thing with my 2008 Zafira in heavy rain and in snow last year. The rain was getting into the computer system and affecting the fuel management system. In turn, this triggered the safety mechanism and put the car into "limp home mode" to save any damage to the engine. Eventually took it into Vauxhall and they re-set the computer and sealed the leak. Every now and again at idle the fuel consumption increases to about 2 gallons/hour and I can smell burning rubber or oil (sometimes). When driving with this problem at motor way speeds in 6th gear I get only 10 mpg. It then clears itself and fuel economy returns to normal. There is no pattern to when it happens and can happen with town driving or motorway. (1.9 CDTi 120)

Answers

Don’t worry, its just the particulate filter cleaning system which changes the fuel mix to make the exhaust hot and burn off the accumulated carbon on the filter. If the glow plug light flashes at you on engine start then it means this process was not complete and needs to be done urgently. So take it for a spin on the motorway. Hi Sharon, I would personally stick with a 1.6 petrol. OK, not the fastest but it seems to be the best engine for reliability - no dodgy egr valve (diesel) or dpf (diesel) to worry about. I’ve got a 55 new shape 1.6 Club and thoroughly recommend it - Dave Kerby from Hampshire

Hi Sharon, just to confirm what Dave suggested: Petrol yes, diesel no way. I had an expensive problem with my 1.9 120 EGR, PDF £1000.00 plus - Brian Hawtin from Northamptonshire

Mine too had this problem, especially straight after the fuel computer had to be replaced. Vauxhall admitted that the original REPLACEMENT pumps were faulty. It was replaced 6 months later. I have a 51 plate, the computer died at 2 years! Luckily under warranty! Could it be that your pump has been replaced at sometime with a faulty one?? Garfield thecat from England

I’m having problems with loss of power and then it starts vibrating. It is in the Vauxhall garage right now but they have no idea what is wrong. So far it has had a new cat fitted - the car is only 2 years old. Does anybody have any ideas? (1.9 cdti)

Our 1.9CDTI (150) suffers the same problem. It has been back to the garage several times. ECU has been reprogrammed with latest software, and a new EGR valve fitted. Vehicle is currently in the garage having new exhaust valves fitted as they believe they are sticking, apparently these are a modified part - Robert from England

I’ve had exactly the same problem 1.9 CDTi Auto. The car went to and fro from the Vauxhall dealership in Warrington where I had the 2 year service carried out after there was a loud tic a tac sound coming from the engine. The dealership claimed there was nothing wrong and 4 months later the engine management light came on. The same dealership cleared the errors and sent us on our way. 1 week later the light was back on. This time the dealership undertook a manual regeneration of the DPF and gave me a letcure about thrashing the car up the motorway at least once a week. Despite telling him that the light had come on when we were on the motorway, he was insistent. The next time the light came on we were 100 miles into a 200 mile journey and had been driving on the motorway for 1.5 hours. Continued to drive but was quite scary as the car wouldn’t accelerate and would slow down on inclines. Took the car to another Vauxhall dealership in Kidlington, Oxfordshire. They informed me that the EGR valve needed replacing and it would take an hour. Got the car back and proceeded on our way. On the motorway after 50 miles, the light came on. Same situation as before. This time took the car to a Vauxhall dealership in Bridgewater. They said that the DPF was jammed solid and needed replacing which they did as I told them the EGR valve had been replaced already. A few days later a different light came on and sovwe returned to the same dealership in Bridgewater. On investigation they said the EGR had not been replaced. (I later learnt that the dealership in Kidlington had just updated the ECU so they couold get £10 from Vauxhall and then sent us on our way knowing the car would break down again. Charming!) The Bridgewater dealership changed the EGR and the light hasn’t been on since. Not really impressed with the local Vauxhall dealership in warrington as the car had no problems until they allegedly carried out the service? Jim Sullivan from England

I need advice please. My car is 8 months out of warranty. A light came on (car with spanner through it) so I took it to the local garage who diagnosed a dpf fault. I was told to take it for a good run. I have done this several times but the light is still on. It has gone back to the garage, and I am now waiting to hear back but have already been warned that I might need a new filter and that this could be very expensive. Any advice?

Answers

Hi Louise. I have had an Astra Twintop from new (Feb 2008); I have had the DPF replaced twice and it now looks as if it will need the same repair again. The fault reoccurs every 11/12 months and I have been told by 2 Vauxhall technicians that there is an ongoing problem with the DPF and they are therefore replacing a faulty part with another faulty part! The filter then takes (in my case) approximately 11 months to start playing up (reduced power), the light then comes on, engine goes into safe mode and despite being told that it was OK to drive my vehicle has broken down completely. I have been trying to persuade Vauxhall to extend the warranty on these parts, but they tell me that it is the way I drive. Apparently if you only do short runs the problem can occur but as my shortest journey is 15 miles and I do a weekly 130 mile round trip, this is obviously not the case. There must be many people experiencing the same problem, so I guess we need to collectively pressure Vauxhall - in your case, I suggest you go back and tell them that it’s a known fault that should be repaired FOC - Jeanette from Berkshire steve spooner from Lincolnshire has submitted an answer to ID: 94.

Hello, my car has the same problem and has been to the garage so many times for this problem. I have had 2 dpf filters, 2 egr valves. also restarting the dpf so many times. My car’s a 58 reg with 37,000 miles on the clock and I have had this problem for the last four months. When they say you drive it wrong that is rubbish - we never drive under the speed limit and often thrash it which should regenerate the dpf. It is a definite problem with this engine and this needs sorting out by Vauxhall. I am just in the process of getting rid of it and expect to lose loads but want a safe car. Also, when I had the RAC look at it they said it is not safe to drive and perhaps Trading Standards might be a thought as this car is not fit for the road and is unsafe to drive when it goes into limp mode just when you go to pull away at a junction or roundabout - Steve Spooner from Lincolnshire

I had the same problem with mine and I had the egr valve changed £750. I have had my 57 plate for a year and it has cost me £1,500. During the Christmas break, I was driving down a country lane and the steering suddenly became very stiff, I couldn’t turn the car, several lights came on the dashboard and I nearly crashed the car and caused a major accident. The car engine however remained on although the revs were raised and the engine sounded louder than normal. I’m not sure if I smelt burning rubber, it felt like the brakes had come on, the windscreen washers stopped working and it was raining heavily, two lights that came on were the triangle with a car on the road, the abs lights and a red light with a chair type symbol. I am sick of this car - Alison Challenger from England

The metal arms have broken on the back doors and I’m not sure if this is because of the age of the car or due to a design fault. Has anyone else had this problem? (2002 DTi)

Answers

Hi. I too have had this problem. I have a 2002 Elegance. My rear drivers door has broken once, which had to be welded. It has now gone again and is making a horrible banging noise every time I open the door. The garage said there is nothing left to weld to now as the metal is so flimsy! I think I will have to get a new door (which I am reluctant to do as I want to sell the car soon and get a newer Zafira). I think mine broke, as the nuts came lose, and I didn’t tighten them up in time. The other rear door is OK, but I did notice those nuts were lose also. I have seen on other forums that this is a design fault. GRRRR!!! Sharon Stepney from Sussex

Same is the case here with May ’02 Reg Black Diesel Zafira, both doors are free from ages but weld them - Aa Mlk from Lancashire

Had this also, Vauxhall body shop did a great job and fitted a police spec plate in the door - Chris Rhodes from Derbyshire
