My self leveling headlamps do not appear to be levelling immediately upon switching on, as they used to. Instead they are high until a warning message and the engine electronics symbol appear and then they adjust to their proper height. Warning message is( low beam, field / vision ) Could it just be a relay, if so, whereabouts is it located. Any help would be greatly appreciated - Thanks.

RE. VAUXHALL VECTRA AUTO 1.8LS R.EVAN had fault codes done, had camshaft and crankshaft sensors done but no joy, engine management still stayed limiting car to 4500 revs could it be ecu, cheers

Answers

Terence, if the engine management light is still on then there has to be a fault code stored in the ECU for it to light.. when you had the sensors replaced, did the garage clear existing fault codes, switch off for five minutes before restarting to see if new fault codes? If they didn't then the ECU could still be seeing a fault. Clearing the codes is not always enough.. they should switch off completely and leave for at least five mins for settings to get stored, before they start further testing... OBD diagnostics can take some time. 4500rpm is not a bad figure and your car is automatic.. that's close to the red zone for an auto (and diesels). At this point, I'd not suspect the ECU itself, though they are known to go faulty in Corsas, and with ANY electronics based stuff, I suppose it could be the case.. but make sure the basics are done right before you go down the line of ECU.. they are not cheap. Answer this question

Lagada Fred Atim, West Midlands

Vauxhall Vectra

Hi my vaxhaul Vectra 03 plate has been blowing cold air for about 6 months now. The mechanic has changed the radiator, water pump, and today a thermostat but the problem is the same. Both pipes into the heater matrix seem to warm up a little and the fan blows fine though it's cold air. Before I can loose any more money fixing the wrong things..Can u please advise on what could be the problem. Thank you.

Answers

Lagada, I wonder what tests this mechanic carried out to determine that it was the radiator, and the pump AND the thermostat? Sounds like he's ripped you off fella. Test.. from cold, start the engine and run it for a while to warm up (take it for a 15 min drive better).. then check the large rubber hoses that lead to and from the radiator at the front of vehicle.. are they warm or hot? if they are, the water pump is pumping hot coolant around the system, the thermostat has opened and the coolant is getting through the radiator. Are there any leaks from the radiator? No.. then that is fine... no need to replace any of them !!! If the pipes were still cold, then change the thermostat as cheaper and easier option to water pump.. if the pipes STILL cold, water pump.. but if a water pump goes, mostly it will give you a telltale sign.. leaking, squealing, bearing rumbling or overheating. In your message you say the pipes to the heater matrix warm up a little.. so hot fluid is getting pumped around.. but if there's an air lock in the matrix, it won't fill up properly. Has it been bled properly? Which "radiator" did he change??? The cooling rad or the heater matrix for the cab?? Again, has it been bled? Has the mechanic considered that the cab heating matrix may be getting hot, but the heat selector may be defective? Hit and miss mechanics will cost you lots of money. R Evans from Caerphilly

my vauxhall vectra 1.8 auto LS 1997 , have had the engine management light on for two years now, but now has started to stall if brake pedal is depressed. i can run car for a hour stop car leave idling get back in soon as brake is depressed car will stop. any ideas please.

Answers

Sorry, Terence, but more fool you... the engine management light to many people may be a con, but it is the vehicle's way of saying something is not right.. and needs to be sorted or further damage will be caused.. you are lucky that you have lasted two years... but you need to get a proper computer diagnosis rather rapid or potentially face a new engine, and on a car that old.. it would be scrappable, fella. got new altenator and belt fitted 2 weeks ago car was running okay then put radio code in now when I start ca r after a min starts to lose power and cut out I was told battery is okay. any idea whats wrong ....

Answers

Margaret, after your car loses power and then cuts out... can it be restarted with no further action by you? ( even if it is a few hours later or the next day) Or do you have to recharge the battery, use jump leads or do something else before it will start? If you can restart it, it will not the the battery or the alternator. If there's juice in the battery AFTER it cuts out, then the alternator appears to be charging it sufficiently and IT will be working... then, you can look elsewhere for the problem. Could you tell me what type of bulbs are brhind my speedo rev counter and so on (dash board display bulbs) i have looke at manual also internet but having a hard job findind out thanks.... Reg

Answers

They should be R509T bulbs but there are different ratings available depending on how bright they are.. the only way is to get one out and pattern it up and take wattage readings.. it would not be in owners manual because it involves taking instrument cluster out.. Vauxhall will want you at their garage to skin you.. er... have it done by their techs. R Evans from Caerphilly

My 58 plate vectra starts and runs well but the service light comes on and power drops then after a short time the engine cuts out but restarts with a turn of the key

Answers

David, get it diagnosed via the OBD connector, there are many reasons your car could be doing this and any faults developed would be stored in the car's ECU and can be retrieved by diagnostic. R Evans from Caerphilly

I hv an Opel 1.6 petrol engine had a breakdown last night called recovery who then diagnosed that the problem to the car was carburettor malfunction and now my question is hw to go about resolving the issue.

Answers

If it is a carburettor malfunction, remove it and have it overhauled... or get a new one.. get one from a breakers and 9/10 you'll have to have it overhauled anyway as most of the time they are on the shelf for a while and fuel evaporates leaving the inside of the carb clogged with varnish. You could try fleabay .... for upwards of £35 depending on type of carb.. but at least your protected by buyers warranty R Evans from Caerphilly

How do I know if my timing chain has gone I was driving along and it started to sound like a tractor then it just stopped and won't even click over to start I have a 2litra Sri turbo someone said it was the chain how do I know I'm a woman and know not a lot

Answers

Angela, if your timing chain had gone.. i.e. broken.. then you would get the events you described but you'd probably have had a lot more signs.. bang from engine are where pistons crashing into valves and probably more dramatic stuff that sounding like tractor and then stopping. If the chain has snapped, the engine may have suffered irreparable damage. Get a mechanic to check it, watch them and get them to explain to you what they are doing each stage, and what they are looking for. R Evans from Caerphilly

Do your sidelights work? If not, you may have fuse gone to the lights.. check them. If you don't know which fuse it is, pull them one at a time and reinstall (so you don't place wrong fuse in wrong slot) until you find a broken fuse. R Evans from Caerphilly

My Vectra is in permanent limp mode vacuum seems to be working ok but the spanner light remains on and a diagnostic check read unable to communicate. Any advise please

Answers

Who did the diagnostic check for you? If it was self done via cheaper OBD tool then it may not connect to your ECU. No need to go to Vauxhall for diagnostic (ching ching time).. can go to engine tuning specialist who will have complex kit that will work. See if you can find a mobile tuner to come to you since it is in permanent limp. R Evans from Caerphilly

blower works on one constant speed ( fast ) on all 4 settings any ideas please thanks

Answers

Could be a couple of things.. related to the rheostat or that device that regulates the speed of the fan.. it could be that it is faulty but it could also be loose or dirty connections. If this doesn't work, it could be the actual selector switch in the dash. Rheostat and loose connections easier and cheaper to resolve !! R Evans from Caerphilly

After changing my thermostat relay inside my heater motor 3 times I was told to change heater motor, this was a 40 min job by a mechanic as the g/box must be removed never had a problem since, the relay slows the fan speed for 1,2,3 but 4 is full power from battery I'm led to believe ,£25 on eBay paul from Tyne and Wear

The boot on my 2008 Vauxhall Vectra estate is the electric one and it has been no trouble until last week when I took our dogs to the vets and the boot would not open when we got there, the boot just does not sound like it usually did.....not noise when it unlocks and not noise of the motor........I found that if I took the grommet off the inside of the boot liner then I could manually[with a screw driver] open the boot. I have checked all the fuses and they are fine. I was told that this was a common fault on Vauxhall Vectra Estates. How do I fix this problem and could I change the boot back to a manual opening one instead of electrically opening. Kind regards C. Trenholme
