Phil Andrews, Dorset

Vauxhall Meriva

Rear right brake/ hub area squeaking at wheelspeed frequency. Had several checks at garage. Pads and cable replaced. Fault re-ocurring after approx 4000 miles. Strong hot-brake smell after 10 miles of 50/ 60 mph easy running. Fault vanishes for several months after WD40 sprayed (without aiming- bad back & wonky knees!) onto general hub area. Obviously something sticking, but what? How to prevent?

The inside of my windows steam up and I cannot get them to clear without having windows open and even then back windows are still steamed up anyone else had this problem ?

Answers

hi Steve, may partner had a similar problem on my old Astra and the Air circulation button had been switched ON there's no indication . This circulates the same air around the inside and no fresh air comes in. When pressed ON it stops bad smells entering the car from outside. Press to switch off and see if it helps. Hi, Wonder if anyone can help please? Car unlocks fine with either key or fob. However, when I go on to actually open the door using the handle all the doors re-lock again. All working fine except for this. I found a similar problem posted online and he found the problem was the actuator or door lock solenoid? Any thoughts?

My brake lights are stuck on when i shut the car boot, but work fine when the boot is open? Does anyone know why this has started happening?

Answers

The loom for the high level brake light which goes to the l/h side of the boot lid via a flexible rubber connector is prone to break and short out when the boot lid is open and shut. The problem I had was the brake light fuse blew intermittently and I had to repair the damaged wiring, this could be the cause of your problem it's worth checking. Philip Jones from Cornwall

I'm thinking of buying a meriva from a dealership. I test drove two models and both drove completely different. The one that iI liked the most I couldn't get above 60mph that's no good at all on a motorway. Could you give me some insight before I go and do something silly....

Answers

The 1.4i Meriva is only an entry level engine. Although it has a lower bhp you'll find its economy is worse than the stronger engines. I have the 120 bhp turbo engine in mine and I find it takes most roads in its stride, with the exception of steeper hills, it doesn't like hills at all :D. I find second gear a tad frustrating though. Normally you start in first and once you`re actually moving you switch to second, but even with the 120 turbo you need to be moving quite fast or second feels underpowered. If you can, get the 140 turbo or the 1.7 cdti. Used Merivas will barely be priced differently, whereas the difference between new engines is a few grand. kev from Torfaen

I had the same problem. Local main dealer was hopeless, suggested changing steering rack at huge cost. Our local small back street mechanic changed the alternator - problem solved. It transpired the alternator wasn't supplying enough power to the electronics on the electrically powered steering column (stupid design). No problems since. Hope this helps. D Golby from Somerset

I had the same problem on an 05 reg Meriva last year and phoned Vauxhall customer service who advised me to take it to my local dealer and if a certain code came up on their diagnostic machine they would cover the repairs free of charge which they did. In my case the EPS light did come on - if you google you will see that this is a common problem with Merivas - may be worth phoning vauxhall on 0800 0260034 to see if they can help as a safety issue following the Watchdog programme - Good Luck!! Hello, When I am braking (not all the time) the pedal seems to jump as it gives the sensation as though its an electric shock. Any idea what it can be?

Answers

If it feels like a road drill under your foot it may be the anti-lock braking mechanism working. This happens any time one wheel is not rotating (locked up) when the others are turning. It usually means that there is a patch of ice or oil on the road and that wheel isn't gripping. John from West Midlands

Hi, I recently took delivery of my 2014 Meriva. I notice then when I indicate left, the front day lights on the left goes out, until I turn the indicator off. The same happens when I turn right. Is this correct Thanks Mike.

Answers

It is correct. Many other cars with daytime running lights do the same, one reason is it allows the indicator to be seen properly. Charlie from West Sussex
