Only have my car a month now and twice while driving it has lost power and the steering has got really heavy. Once when I was in 6th gear on the motorway and once pulling away from traffic i lights. A yellow car with a spanner comes up on the dash. Once i turned the car off and back on it went back to normal and no light on dash. Any ideas what's happening? ?

Answers

Year of car? Petrol or diesel? That warning light usually means the car needs serviced but is also used for faulty glow plugs. Steering going heavy may mean no power from alternator (electric power steering) but you may have other issues. Hugh from City of Glasgow

Hi. I have a 2011 Sports tourer, 1.8 Petrol SRI. My exhaust has gone mid section. To replace it's a two part job. The original is one part. The issue is this. The centre part is fine, it's the back box. On my car the rear exhaust pipe comes out of the rear box and is shaped downwards. Sort of bent towards the ground. The ones that come up to replace are straight pipes with a chrome fitting. My bumper does not have a cut out for this only a curve cut under the bumper. From behind the bumper is solid. My existing pipe does not have any chrome fitments. My local garage won't fit the new one as they fear it will A. Damage the bumper with hot gases directed straight towards the rear bumper B. Fumes may come into the vehicle. Any advise would be welcome.

Hi guys Yesterday going to work and noticed the display on the dashboard not working/not illuminated so pulled over ignition off and on, no problem. Then decided to look at the menus again and it seems most of the functionality of this has disappeared, tried different settings to find functions (basically best ECO paramiters etc) but found even fields to display options were not showing. Fiddled about then centre console display crashed showing "snow", again ignition off and on, back to as it was but without missing info. Then reset to factory settings on centre console but still same issue. Anyone any ideas? Just looked and found out, I think Warranty ran out yesterday..!! This is 2014 2.0ltr, 163bhp Sri Model, no SatNav

Hi. Wonder if anyone can help. I was turning a corner today, went into 2nd gear and my car just went off. Lights and everything on dashboard. A message flashed up saying press clutch to start. This happened for a few minutes. I turned the engine off and restarted it again. Luckily it wasn't too busy and I was on my own,but concerned me a little. Would appreciate it if anyone help with what it might be. Hoping it's just a glitch and a one off.

Hi My insignia moves very slow when i just start the engine in the mornings no matter how hard i step on the accelerator instead it just make noise as if its in N gear. but after a while it runs properly. Do you know why.

Answers

The use of the phrase "as if it's in N gear" rather than in "as if it's in neutral" suggests to me that you have an automatic gearbox. If that is so I would check the ATF level and if the level is OK the question is has it been changed at the recommended intervals? If not drain and replenish it with new and see if there is any improvement. Mick from Portugal

Hi can anyone help? there is a knocking noise coming from somewhere in the drivers door. It sounds more near the bottom of the door area. Very annoying. Not sure if its in the door or even inside the sill. it doesn't sound metal to metal. Just to clarify all suspension etc has been checked so not in that area. any suggestions would be welcome.

Answers

Check whether the door catch striker plate needs adjustment. Close the door normally from the outside then press firmly against the handle to see if the door moves further in against the rubber seal. Adjustment is by loosening off the striker plate screws and re-positioning the door to eliminate the rattle or knock. Hugh from City of Glasgow

Hi I have a Vauxhall insignia my car runs ace in all gears but when I'm on a motorway and go into six 5th and 6th gear my car goes into limp mode could you please help me and tell me what the problem could be thanks so much

Answers

Sorry, wish I could help. My son's got a 2014 diesel Insignia & a Friend's got an identical car with the exact same problem. Both have had ex-Vauxhall factory mechanics look at the cars but no luck. Both can run perfectly for days on end & then go to limp mode for no apparent reason. Servicing, oils, fluids, batteries etc. have all been carried out in accordance with the schedules. Obviously, this a highly dangerous condition as it can, and has happened when changing down to overtake especially on secondary roads. I have found that main dealers seem to be powerless to sort the problem as they tend to be slaves to diagnostic equipment. RICHARD JOYCE from Ireland

Hi guys, Not an easy one this but here goes. My dashboard display keeps flickering en mass on and off. Even when the fresh air fan is on I can hear it drop in power like something somewhere is working intermittently. Any guidance help etc will be greatly appreciated.

Answers

Check your battery capacity also check your alternator output, should be around 14.3 volts on charge. Especially check all connections in engine bay (battery terminals, alternator connections etc) and especially check all earth connections. You may have to remove dash panel and check loom connector plugs and card edge connectors for cleanliness and security. As a long shot, check that no one has fitted LED bulbs in any of the interior lights, sometimes aftermarket bulbs can cause this. Hugh from City of Glasgow

Glow plug? just a thought. peter from North Yorkshire

Glow plugs a good answer but it might also be that fuel is draining back from the engine overnight. If you have a primer on the fuel filter then pump this and see if the car will start. Not sure offhand if the Insignia has an electric pump in the tank but if it has you should try switch on the ignition for 10 to 20 seconds bursts to prime the fuel system before trying to start. Hugh from City of Glasgow

Checked glow plugs all heating grand all 4 also have a pressure senor on them if the pressure senor part was gone would this have an affect it starting? Daniel from Ireland

I don’t think the pressure sensor part of the glow plugs affects cold starting. The pressure sensor is supposed to monitor cylinder pressure when running and feed this to the ECU for optimal running, emission controls etc. Some engines only had one sensor plug but, even with four sensors, only one sensor at a time was used and if it malfunctioned the system switched to another sensor. Trouble was the little sensor holes got blocked up with soot which caused fault codes and warning lights then they changed the software in the ECU so that the fault codes wouldn’t bring on a warning light but the codes were still there if you scanned them. Normally you’d change the four plugs if one’s faulty but sensor plugs are too expensive for that although I understand you could get them cleaned ultrasonically. Hugh from City of Glasgow

I've got problems with the boot on my insignia hatchback. It's refusing to open via the normal boot lid press pad. I've followed some instructions from Charlie Buckingham from Swansea and finally managed to get it open. Charlie also said that there is a simple way to replace the faulty switch and he says Remove the boot bar outside trim and badge(3 screws). Remove the inside bootlid trim(small release mechanism inside boot lid by the locking catch. Press the release mechanism and the trim just pulls off. This gives access to the boot switch. Unclip the wiring connector and just replace with the new one. Job done 15 to 20 minutes. Unfortunately I'm thinking his outline is for an insignia Tourer as I can't see any of his instructions on my car. Can anyone (maybe Charlie if he's still following this question) tell me where the 3 screws are for the outside trim and how to remove the inside bootlid trim on a hatchback. Cheers Jim

I have had problems with water getting into front and rear light assemblies. These have been changed but I am now getting condensation in the front lamp assemblies. I am told by Vauxhall that this is a characteristic of the Insignia. My research indicated this is not an Insignia characteristic. Has anybody had this problem and,,if so, what has Vajuxhall or the dealer said about it?

Answers

I had same problem but actually had water coming in the boot, evidently it's the seals that have gone around the back lights which let in water. Janet from Middlesex

Vauxhall Insignia

My vauxhall Insignia 2009 just lost all power when I was driving along the road before that codes 3 and 4 where showing. Managed to get towed to garage but after two weeks they still cannot get it going. The coolant pipe had ripped apart and so we thought that I might have seized the engine. The garage however told me that they can get the engine ticking over manually but when they turn the ignition key to start the engine all the lights come on then go off again immediately. They have replaced the starter motor and checked the battery but it is not this. So I am no further on with my car still sitting in the garage. They keep getting the engine to turn over manually but when they turn the ignition key all that happens is the dash lights up for a split second and then nothing. Any suggestions as to what to do or what it could be would be most appreciated. Many Thanks, Kev

Answers

Check that engine immobiliser has not activated. Also, check that the engine control relay has not failed. Failing this, take it to a specialist Vauxhall garage, where they have the appropriate diagnostic equipment and knowledge on this model. Paul from Cambridgeshire

Thanks Paul for taking the time to answer my question. I spoke to the garage yesterday around midday just before they were about to close for Christmas. They informed me that they had gone over the engine again and could not find anything wrong with it which makes them almost certain that it is a electrical problem. After doing some research online the night before I came to the same conclusion as you regarding the immobiliser. So I mentioned it to the garage and they said that their is a strong possibility that it could be that. I informed them that I had a spare key but they are not open now until the new year. So that's when we will try this. I am just glad that it is not the engine as this would have cost me a small fortune. I will mention about the engine control relay that you mentioned in your reply to them. Thanks again for your reply Paul I really do appreciate people like you taking the time and effort to answer someones question. I will be sure to let everybody know how I get on in the new year. Kev from Cheshire

I appreciate your thanks. It doesn't happen very often! I'm afraid I have no detailed knowledge of your model of car, but I have more than 35 years experience of fixing cars and I'm an electronics engineer as well. I use the internet to increase my knowledge daily, so I try to give back by helping on various forums. If you can find the wiring diagrams, you can solve this problem. Hope you get it sorted. Hi brand new 66 plate Vauxhall Insignia delivered 2 days ago. All is great barring the bluetooth . As a company car this is vital to me. I have successfully paired now 6 different current mobile phones to the car system, all connect and allow me to play music through the system and gives me the full contact list. Making a call however all 6 phones have the same issue. Basically the person I am calling cannot here me from the car, I can hear them no problem. I think it's a microphone issue, so please let me know I'm losing it and the fix is with one of the buttons in this car and I've been daft. Or is there potentially a mic issue? Kind Regards

My Vauxhall insigna 2012 diesel saloon keeps totally cutting out. No lights, no engine and the steering jams. Has happened about 15 times, on motorway doing 70 mph, coming down Alpes in France three weeks ago, highly dangerous! Sent to Perry's again, first time could find nothing wrong, this time said the car needed a new EGR valve. £362.47 later drove car about one mile had 4 cutouts and was nearly killed by HGV. Got it back to Perry's an now refuse to drive it. What do I do now as I am scared stiff of the car?

I had something very much like what your getting. Vauxhall had the care for a week scratching there heads. I refused toi have the car back until it was fixed properly. It turned out to be a bug in the cars computer system. The emptied the computer and did a total reboot and uploaded new soft ware and away it went.
