Toyota Yaris 2003

I bought a Toyota Yaris 2003 on 31st May 2011. During the winter the heater stopped working but the windscreen heater was working fine. Since then I have seen four people about it but no-one found anything. In the meantime my MOT was due in April 2012 so I took it to Kwik Fit and they checked everything and changed the coolant. It still wasn’t working so they called their expert with a callout charge of £90 and they had to open up the dashboard, at a further charge of £50, but still they couldn`t find anything. I have since seen two more people who have said there is nothing wrong but they might try to change the thermostat. I have spent so much money but still the problem stays the same. Can anyone help please?

HI. I have a secondhand Toyota Yaris 2004 semi automatic. Since I bought it about a month ago I have been encountering a problem. Whilst driving on automatic transmission the gear from E goes to N by itself and the car stops dead. For it to work again you have to restart the engine once, twice and even five times prior to it working again normally. Any suggestions please? It looks as if this is a common problem from what I’ve researched. What could be a suitable solution?

Hi, my semi auto Yaris 2000 won’t go into gear. I was told the shift position sensor was broken, so I went to Toyota, paid 130 quid for a new one and it has not rectified a thing. Has this happened to any one else? I’ve done 68,000 miles.

I bought this car from Toyota, Canterbury. It came with a year’s warranty and as I was suspecting auto gear box problems. I took the opportunity to extend the warranty for two years when it was offered. I had a clause written into the warranty that allowed me to use my local garage for routine servicing and this was all agreed on paper. When I later had problems they said that they should not have issued this warranty. Letters went back and forth and they finally returned my money and cancelled the warranty. I challenged this course of action but got nowhere. Having no faith in the car or Toyota, I part exchanged the car for a different make so there is a dodgy Yaris around. I have all the relevant paperwork if anybody is interested!

Hi, the warning light for the power steering stays on for about 2 or 3 mins after I have started my Toyota Yaris. It’s a blue light, is this OK or should I take it to a garage?

In 2004, 2006 and 2008 I had the brake fluid changed. On the next change in 2011 I was told by the Toyota Centre one rear bleed nipple had snapped off when they were trying to loosen it and the other was completely corroded necessitating replacing both wheel cylinders at a total cost of £317. The car has averaged around 3,000 miles a year, seldom driven over roads treated with salt and when not in use garaged. In the 22 years of having the brake fluid changed on my Cavalier and Nova until it was 15 years old I never had this problem. The Toyota Centre never warned me this might happen. Is this normal and could changing BOTH cylinders have been avoided? (998 GS 5door saloon)

I purchased my new Yaris from local dealer having road tested a 2010 model which was lovely to drive. I wanted a blue model which was delivered from other branch so did not drive this until I actually owned the car. BIG MISTAKE! The gears are so hard and difficult to engage, especially reverse and first gear. Dealer said only done a few miles gears will bed in, NO, gears have no bedded in. Dealer had car back again, nothing technically wrong with gears. By now having driven the car for 4 weeks I had personal injury of my wrist and shoulder muscles from having to push the gears around! Disinterested dealership said gear box will still bed in at 2,000 miles meanwhile I try not to drive the car which I HATE, leave it at home, and still having physio treatment. I do not believe that these gears will ever be smooth and easy to use no matter how long I have the car. Has anyone had similiar issues? Contacted Toyota head office who refer me back to useless dealership. I will never recommend the Yaris 1.3 T Spirit to anyone. I expected a dream car, instead I have a nightmare.

Answers

Do not put up with this sort of twaddle from the dealer. Phone Toyota customer service and raise hell about it. I have and after a battle, they spent £1,200 on putting the gears right - Christopher Kenney from Buckinghamshire

My sister has a Yaris T1 2006 model. Since she had her first anti-hijack and alarm system installed, she’s been having problems. The system has been changed & replaced three times already (she now has a VESA approved system), but now the car is giving more problems. The installers had her replace her battery, which she did but the problem persists. Is there a general fault with Yaris T1 when installing alarm systems, i.e. computer conflict or something?

I have had the blower replaced. There was a sound of water when turning corners, the sound stopped and so did the blowers again. Now for the second time, the same thing has happened. I have no blower and the heat is unbearable, I am having to drive with the windows down on the motorway or suffer the heat. In the winter, the windows iced over inside the car and as the blower had stopped, it took ages to defrost before I was able to drive. When it was snowing, it was icing up whilst driving. I then got the new blower but as I said, the same thing has happened again. Is there any solution to this problem?

I had the problem where my semi-automatic car went into gear but still showed it being in neutral, even though the position was 1st. It then wouldn’t start again when i switched off the ignition to try and reset? I had to call recovery out both times, they had no idea what was wrong. Apparently, I had a disfunctioning Control Actuator. The garage has replaced it under the extended warranty I had but they now tell me that the clutch is going. My car has only done 16,000 miles, how can this be? Could the clutch have been damaged by this faulty part? Can anyone give me some advice please?

I’ve had my Yaris for just 2 years, very low mileage, noticed that a large gap has appeared between base and back of driving seat, showing metal rod. Similar happening on passenger seat. It seems that the spongy back cover has collapsed but no replacements are made any more... new seats needed costing Ł$k!!! Has anyone has this problem, what did they do about it, has anyone any ideas.... (I am not a 2 ton Tess and passenger seat had very few passengers.)

Please please help - bought my Yaris three weeks ago after trading in my Renault Clio N reg. Dazzled by the quirky dash and the space inside. Noticed the lurching of the gearbox on the test drive but the dealer said I was too heavy handed. Two weeks in and I can’t stand the lurching of the gearbox, people won’t believe me - even I couldn’t understand why I was having such trouble. Especially bad between 1st and 2nd. Already had two near misses. Dont know what to do, should I take the car back to the dealer, and what if anything can they do. Waited a very long time for this fancy car and how disillusioned I am.
