Hi ,can anyone tell how to change the fuel filter on a toyota hiace 98 2.0 petrol automatic?

Answers

Not familiar with that particular model, but on the 1996 2.4 litre petrol and I suspect your as well, the fuel filter is an in-line filter and is located on the inside face of the chassis just about below your passengers feet. It is easy reached from under the vehicle and even easier still if you remove the engine cover in the back section of the van. To remove the filter, use a pair of pliers (long nose I find the best but not essential) to squeeze together the lugs of the hose clamp and move the clamp along the hose out of the way; there is one each side of the filter. Then simply pull the hoses off the filter, discard it and install the new filter. Hope that is what you meant and that this information helps. Vera from Australia

I have Toyota hiace bus model 1999 automatic. From yesterday (23-08-2014) when I put on the reverse gear and move I hear noises from around/ in between the rear wheels. Please can any body tell me the problem and how to fix it.

Answers

Your description of the noise is a bit hazy, and your level of experience and understanding unknown. But there are a couple of things you could check. The first is the hand brake. On this model the hand brake can cause the shoes to bind with the brake drums. This is usually noticed when you try to move backward and id heard and felt as a single but distinct clunk accompanied by a feeling that the brake has suddenly "let go". The brake shoes move slightly with the rotation of the wheel and drum and what you hear and feel is the releasing of the bond between the shoes and the drum when the shoes reach the maximum extent of their ability to travel. Once the clunk is heard that is the end of the matter until next time you apply the hand brake. The second possibility is a failure to some extent of the tail shaft universal joint or joints. Early wear is usually accompanied by a metallic squeak almost like an insect. But you may miss the early signs of wear and only begin to notice it when the wear is sufficient to wear to cause a heavier clunk as one side of the worn joint rotates freely for a fraction of a turn before the other side takes up the load. There is no reason why this should be more obvious in reverse than in drive, but it is possible. Nothing else comes to my mind that would emanate at the rear axle and only affect reverse. Unless of course you have picked up a stick or some other obstruction. I strongly urge you to visit a mechanic and seek both an opinion and a quote. Even if you have some level of experience, it never hurts to have a second opinion or confirmation. Vera from Australia

I have a 1995 Toyota Hiace Van. I observed that when I was travelling my reserve tank is always full and my radiator reduces water. I already advised the mechanic to check if my radiator aux has a problem but he replied that your aux is running okay. To this extent I suspected my water pump. If the water pump failed what is the resulting behavior of the car?

Answers

You are unlikely to get a water pump that fails, if by fail you mean that it ceases to pump. What is a more likely possibility is that it develops a leak. This you may see as a drip or leak on the ground under the vehicle but such a drip could come from any number of places including the air conditioner condenser. The most likely cause is a defective radiator cap. As the water in the radiator expands with heating and temperature it should and may in fact vent some to the auxiliary tank. It does this by raising the valve in radiator cap just sufficient to expose the outlet to the auxiliary tank but not sufficient to vent the fluid out the top of the radiator. Later, as the temperature drops a small vacuum is created within the radiator and this sucks the fluid back from the auxiliary tank. If the radiator cap is defective, the fluid may be venting from the radiator to the auxiliary tank okay, but instead of drawing it back later from the auxiliary , air is being drawn through the defective cap seal. Over time, the radiator fluid level drops without making any apparent difference to the level of fluid in the auxiliary. This is especially true if some of the radiator fluid is also lost directly out past the defective cap and not reaching the auxiliary tank at all. The radiator cap is cheap. Replace it before you spend any more money. If that fails to correct the situation, get the radiator pressure tested. That will tell you if you have a leak in the radiator, the heater, any of the hoses or perhaps the cylinder head, gasket or block. A leak in any of these may be too small to notice visually. My money is on the radiator cap. Start there. Vera from Australia

what are the signs that my battery needs to be replaced?

Answers

Check on the battery, if its a maintenance free battery or not? Maintenance free batteries have a indication if its good, needs a charge or needs replacement. joe from New Zealand

The first sigh most of us get is that it lacks sufficient energy to crank the car on a cold day. Then we usually look at the battery or our accounts to see how old it is. Batteries come with a warranty (often with a sticker on the battery) and few batteries last a day beyond the expiry of warranty period. It is possible to have the battery charge level and general condition checked at a battery centre or auto electrician. Indeed,; most mechanics would also have the equipment to check it. And I would certainly do that if the battery wasn't very old because the problem may lie elsewhere and it may be necessary to look at other components of the starting and charging system. But if the battery warranty has expired you can just about bet that the battery has also expired. Vera from Australia

Answer this question

Simon, Australia

Toyota Hiace

I have a 1996 Hiace SUPER CUSTOM - it overheated pretty badly and was towed to the mechanics. I spent almost $7000 getting the radiator tested and 'fixed' a complete cylinder head and head gasket kit, timing belt, glow plugs and injectors as well as a few other things done. I picked the van up and was told everything was fine - it over heated the next day! I took it back to the mechanic who then flushed the engine with water to get rid of a load of chemiweld he said was all through the engine. I'm now being told I have a crack in the block??... Does this sound correct? Should he have checked for a crack in the block when replacing the head gasket? Could he have checked while replacing the head gasket? He's now saying I will probably owe another $2000... Is is possible he cracked the block while flushing the engine repeatedly?...Any help would be great - cheers

Answers

you so got ripped bro that job should be more around $2000 give or take $200 and that's properly fixed and at that price he shouldn't be shortcutting the job using chemiweld a good mechanic would have pressure tested the radiator found its leak and fixed it and if it has a cracked block they either didn't test it for cracks before replacing the head gasket, it cracked from overheating after they hade done the job , or they didn't even remove the head and just put chemiweld in to try reseal it and way overcharged you but in the end they owe you your van running because they stuffed it up and ontop of that they charged you more than double what a like that job should cost ray from New Zealand

TOTALLY agreed mate you got ripped off !!do not take it seek advice chees smurfy68 from Australia

Simon, flushing the engine repeatable could not have cracked the engine block, what has happen when your first overheated the engine block could have cracked at that time, but not visible now that the engine is back together and under pressure this is the time the crack will show up, water will hosed through the crack.Try have it mended and I believe you are good to go again, you are being over charged but smile awhile, find another mechanic. Have same problem it's the sensor on the gearbox possibly plastic drive unit inside bought gps speedometer problem solved Brian from Highland

Sometimes there can be play in the thin shaft the runs from the back of dash behind speedo. It goes to the transmission/gear box, pull it out from gearbox and dash and making sure its firmly pushed back in can fix this, also trying to get lubricant down the shafts tubing and then connecting one side of the shaft to a drill and rotating it slowly can free it up and lubricate it, if its skipping at the dash end it can make a clicking noise as it skips the points of contact. Or it can be a broken point or point recipient at either the dash or gear/transmission. kyle from Australia

Hi, I own a 99 Toyota Hi Ace campervan...I fitted a new airconditioner a few months ago & when I turn it on it runs ok for a while then all of sudden there is a loud bang & it feels as though the fan blades hit the floor of the van. It then runs normally again for a while & then does it again...the sound only happens when the airconditioner is running. We had the unit replaced with another thinking it was the air conditioner unit, but it is still doing it with this new unit. It doesn't do it all the time, & sometimes it sounds like a grating noise but still feels as though its coming up through the floor. Any ideas what it could be ????
