Until 4 weeks ago my Toyota Hiace van drove perfectly. Then came the snow and the roads are permanently frozen now, thus a mix of ice and asphalt. Above 60 km the van makes a noise related to moving on the road and increases in tempo with increasing speed. It sounds almost like there is wire around the kardan/drift shaft and slapping the undercarriage. I hear it from the left rear, my partner from the left front. There is nothing visually amiss, no wire, etc. Turning the engine off does not change the noise, nor does putting it out of gear. The van is stored in a heated garage daily and thus there is no ice build up. Wheel nuts are tight. Nothing obvious. Any suggestions please?

Hi, I`m having major squealing in my Toyota Hiace van 2005. I`ve changed the water pump, changed the bearings for the automatic tensioner and both idler pulleys and still the squealing occurs. Just to note that when I take off the engine belt the loud noise is gone. Could it be the compressor or alternator and if so is it a common problem? (2kd)

I’m seeking the specific body dimensions of a ’78 Toyota Hiace. We had to put our beloved Sunshine van out to pasture a couple of years ago. Now we are looking for a newer model Hiace, but suspect the new LWB is actually slightly smaller than the ’78 LWB. Measurements would be really helpful. Can anyone help? Thanks.

My Toyota Hiace`s oil light goes on after a 60-100km drive, especially when loaded and when the temperature is at half. When the temperature goes down the oil light will go off. When I press on the gas the oil light goes off too. When doing local running that may not see the water temperature go to half, the light won`t come on. I have changed the oil pump twice but in vain. Please advise? (lh172 ingine)

When I started my Toyota Hiace Powervan up this morning it started no problem but all of the lights on the dashboard stayed on. Has anybody got any idea what the problem might be? I know the obvious thing is the alternator, but sometimes it can be other things? I would appreciate any help. Thanks. (Powervan)
It’s the alternator. Did it to me last week. The lights get their earth from the brushes. It was easier to just change the whole thing, however it wasn’t cheap - Gordon from England

My Toyota Hiace has no dashboard lights coming on. New battery has been fitted but it seems no power is getting to start the van. What could be wrong?
If you pop the bonnet there’s a fuse box on the right hand side and in there is the fuse for your ignition from the batery which is your problem. Mine blew when I stopped at customs in Italy and the guard knew what is was straight away lol - Ashley Beu from England

I want to buy a Toyota Hiace LWB front engine with auto box but cannot find one anywhere, any ideas? Has anyone ever swapped a manual box for an auto? Hi there, since I changed the fuel filter of my Toyota Hiace minibus, the filter light on the dashboard has been on for over a month and it is a problem to me now. Is there any possible way of rectifying this problem? Please help. (High Roof)
If this vehicle is a diesel 1kd or 2kd, you need to use a genuine filter. With the key turned off unclip the terminal wire on top of the filter... then get someone to turn the key to the on position (lights on dash showing) and count to 9 before reconnecting terminal... the light will now go out - Wayne from New Zealand

I recently got my Toyota Hiace. Before reaching south Sudan it started to overheat. It cooled down after replacing the air clearer and cleaning the radiator. Now the local mechanics have said it`s the gasket. I am not convinced. What could the problem be? Please help.
Personally I’d start with the cheap fixes, like thermostat, japparts do them cheap. Buy some rad flush, flush the cooling system and add new antifreeze/coolant mix. The 2lte 2.4td is apparantley known for overheating issues and can crack the cylinder head if overcooked. With the engine cold take off the radiator/coolant pressure relief cap and check with a torch for any bubbles of gas, this could indicate a shot head gasket or cracked head, also check the state of your engine oil, if its emulsified it could also be a sign of head gasket failure, it all depends on where the gasket has failed (if it is the gasket) - Ross Graham from Northumberland
It’s a fault in the way they smelted the aluminium, they put silica in to make it run better in casting, this dissipates in time leaving hairline cracks in the head. A new head cost £440 from 247 spares. - Jason Lingard from England

Hi there. I have a 1996 Toyota Hiace with the carby 2rz motor. I got it yesterday and the old owner said it needs a service. It drives sluggishly on takeoff and sounds like it’s missing a cylinder, but once the revs are up it`s fine. I changed the spark plugs and leads and still no change except when I put my foot down it kind of spits out? Not a backfire but a quick spit and it’s still sounding on 3 cylinders. What the heck do I do? (Carby 2.4L)

Hi there. I have an automatic Toyota Hiace diesel van. The problem I have with it is that the brake pads have worn too quickly like just after 4ks or 5ks. With this the van shakes a lot when I slightly put my feet on the brakes only. Today I changed the rear brakes cylinder and drums too.but after driving for a couple of hours it started shaking. It`s too annoying to be honest. I changed the front brake pads as well just one week ago and used bendix, heavy duty one. This hasn`t helped much. My work is delivery so a lot of stop and go is involved, but still it`s weird to wear front brake pads in just 4ks. Any sort of help really appreciated. Thanks.
Hello, it’s Monty from Melbourne. I just want to know, first, is it only vibrating when you brakes or every time? Secondly, is your steering wheel also vibrating? Third, did you ever replaced the disks or not? The thing is you need new disks, front ones. The brake pads do 40-50k, depending on your braking habit. 0430400076 is my number, Josan motors, find me on google. Thanks. - Harjap Singh from Australia
You need to check the wheel sensor for the ABS because if they are bad the ABS ECU won’t be able to control the brake pad pressure and they will wear out quickly - Thomas Rodrigues from Guyana

Why is my 03 Toyota Hiace consuming so much gas and idling roughly with a 1RZ engine?

I got my ecu replaced a few days back. I had 86991 26E30 ecu in it before but now garage man has replaced it with 26E20 saying both of them have same specifications but since then i am facing a new problem everyday like it is consuming 10 to 15 litre extra fuel. (fuel injection ratio is 3.7). AC does not work properly when on road. Etc. I want to know the difference btw both ecu’s and what could be the problem. Thanks for ur advice in advance.

My 96 2.8 litre diesel Hiace has done a water pump, my question is... I have everything off except the bottom pulley wheel where the crank is. Does this need a gear puller to get this off to access cover and water pump or is main bolt a reverse thread on crank? Thanks. (2.8 diesel)
Centre bolt on bottom pulley is damn tight, put a ring spanner on tight to chassis and hit starter! It worked for me. Avoid using a puller on the edges, the crank pulley is in two parts bonded with rubber. Use puller with bolts screwed into pulley face. Good luck - Al Turner from Perthshire
