Skoda Octavia 2005

I’m experiencing excessive fuel consumption on my 2005 PD 1.9-litre diesel tdi auto. My Octavia auto seams thirsty when accelerating (not gunning it), the fuel gauge can drop dramatically on short hops. The instantaneous mpg read out can drop to 16mpg during normal acceleration, it will then settle down to 45mpg-ish when I back off gas tootling along at 40-50 mph. Any ideas please?

I could have broken an EGR valve that has stopped the turbo from working. Any suggestions on what to do? (1.9 tdi)

Answers

First: is it the EGR? If it is, the car will start okay then run rough as the engine warms up. Second: is the engine management light on? EGR valve problem = it probably will be. Third: does the engine run okay if you switch it off and the on again? If it still runs rough, it possibly is the EGR. If on a hot restart, it runs sweetly with full turbo power and then loses power a few miles down the road. Sorry, you have a sticky turbo actuator arm. The fix is a new turbo! The EGR is quite easily cleaned out and is about an hour in labour - once they’ve identified it! - John Douglas from Westmoorland
