I have an intermittent problem selecting 1st gear on my Skoda Fabia, especially once I have had the handbrake on. What could be the cause and what is the solution please? Also, have other people had a problem with the parcel shelf breaking due to inadequate plastic fittings?
Answers
Hi there, I have just bought the Skoda Fabia and I was having the same problem in selecting the 1st gear, especially when hand break was in use. Previous to reading your question I was thinking that as I am new to this car I am having problem, but it seems like a common problem in Skoda Fabia now...!!! Apurva Tewar from Middlesex

In many ways a very satisfactory car since I got it in 2002 - economical (55-60 mpg at legal speeds) reliable (except for the windscreen wipers falling off...); used intermittently. PROBLEM = Dampness in estate area - first sign= dampness in L rear wheel well; cured when I realised the rear washer pipe was loose (3 months ago...) - now - most of carpet in load area damp and mouldy L and centre, water in spare wheel well (wheel rim seriously rusty) - any suggestions? (TDi Ambiente)

Discovered same yesterday when cleaning out car. (Octavia Classic Estate) Think it may be leaking through the rubber bungs in the bottom of the wheel well. We looked underneath and saw two of them were qute badly damaged. Going to phone service dep and see if they can shed light on it. If they won’t advise then we will try a mechanic mate of ours before sending it in as it looks like quite an easy job to fix if that is what it is. It was only wet in the well. No carpet etc above was affected so assume it must have come in from below - Anne from Cornwall

I could have broken an EGR valve that has stopped the turbo from working. Any suggestions on what to do? (1.9 tdi)
Answers
First: is it the EGR? If it is, the car will start okay then run rough as the engine warms up. Second: is the engine management light on? EGR valve problem = it probably will be. Third: does the engine run okay if you switch it off and the on again? If it still runs rough, it possibly is the EGR. If on a hot restart, it runs sweetly with full turbo power and then loses power a few miles down the road. Sorry, you have a sticky turbo actuator arm. The fix is a new turbo! The EGR is quite easily cleaned out and is about an hour in labour - once they’ve identified it! - John Douglas from Westmoorland

I have almost committed to buying a used Skoda Fabia. I was happy with the test drive and love the funky look of the car. But inside the bonnet, the felt is soaking wet with a fair amount of mould. The sales outlet has promised to dry it out before I collect it, and assured me that this will not be a continuing problem. I’m just not sure. There’s a year left on the manufacturer’s Warranty, the price is good and it ticks all the other boxes. Am I likely to have problems with water ingress for the life of the car? Can’t face the thought of the smell and potential corrosion where I can’t see it! Help! (Fabia 2 1.2)

Had my Skoda Fabia VRS for six years no problem with water whatsoever. It seems to me that these people who are trying to sell you this car either know or don’t want to know that this car had a problem when the car was traded in. My first thoughts were that this car may have been in an accident of some kind. Don’t attempt to buy this Skoda, you will be back and forth with this garage more times than you are in the driving seat - E Williams from Cardiff

I have a problem selecting 1st gear and sometimes reverse. You feel that you’ve got to really force it in to engage it. I’m no mechanic but tried a gearbox adjustment video on the net for this gearbox and it seemed to work first time. I tried the gears but the problem is still there. The knuckle thing on top of the selectors seem a bit worn with a lot of play in them. Could this be the problem or would changing the oil in the box give better results? This problem is driving me nuts and spoiling the ownership of the car. (1.4 8v mpi)

It looks like a worn clutch pressure plate to me. Usual on a car this age. Allan Robinson from Durham

The headlight unit is badly misted up. How is it best to clear it? (1.4tdi scout)

When you wash your car in wax water, clean your headlight with Glass cleaner this will stop your headlight misting! And do the same to the rear light. Never wax the headlights If it does not work first time, just keep at it it will work - Sidney Parker from Staffordshire

This is my second Fabia, the first was the earlier model/shape, and generally I have been very pleased. I discovered last weekend that I had 3"+ water in the spare tyre well. Has anyone else suffered from leaks? Needless to say it has just come out of the warranty period.
Answers
Dear Helen, I had the same issue with our Fabia 2008. I discovered it in June 2010. They needed to pull off the whole rear bumper and added some additional seals. It was free of charge as the car was still under its warranty period. I purchased the extended warranty package for 4 yrs. I highly recommend that Fabia owners check the spare tyre well after heavy rain to find out this issue soon. Regards - Miroslav from Czech Republic
