My 53 plate Renault Megane Scenic keeps showing a gearbox fault message. It was only doing it every 6 months or so but now it`s happening most days. It`s been into the garage on the computer and is not coming up with any faults! I`ve read on a few forums that it could be a variety of different things that could be wrong. Following a recent service and MOT it has proved impossible to reset the service light and spanner on the dashboard of my Renault Scenic...
Graham Hickman, Suffolk

Renault Scenic 2005

Following a recent service and MOT it has proved impossible to reset the "service" light and "spanner" on the dashboard of my Renault Scenic and the "miles to next service" remains on zero and indicates "change oil now". Please can anyone help?

Answers

Using the buttons on the left stick that you use to toggle through mpg etc select the service screen which reads 0 miles to next service and hold in one of the buttons. I’m sure either work, just hold one in after about 10-15 seconds the screen starts to flash do not let go of the button yet about 3-4 seconds later it all resets and shows 18000 miles till next service. It works on my 2008 model, I’m sure it will be the same for you. Good luck - David Williams from England

Keep the button pressed in on the indicator stalk for 5 seconds and it will reset it - Glen Baker from Norfolk

Hi. I have exactly the same problem. The ’stalk’ reset only succeeds in resetting service interval to zero / nil / 0 and the spanner and service indicator immediately return. Had Scenic serviced and codes read - no fault present. Only solution left is Renault who want £50. Any ideas? John Painter from Suffolk

Answer this question

William Gorman, Northern Ireland

Renault Scenic 2005

Hi, I recently had my 2005 Renault Scenic display a check gearbox message. The fault on the diagnostic machine read turbine speed sensor information and Glen at Greenaway electrics said it`s a problem with the speed sensor in the gear box. When I select reverse the red box that surrounds the R does not appear and it clunks into gear and then if I try to reverse the auto handbrake does not release. However if the handbrake is taken off manually it will reverse. When I select other gears on Park/Neutral/Drive the red box appears around them as normal. Since the message "check gearbox" first appeared 2 days ago, Alvin our mechanic has checked all wires around the gear selector stick and found no issues. He also put half a litre of gear box oil in. The chassis no is VF1JM0J0A33259318 Renault Scenic 1.6 16v auto petrol. Has anyone experienced this or does anyone have any info at all please? (auto)

Used it all weekend and went to start it on Sunday and there was no power.
Hayley Rutterford, Cambridgeshire

Renault Scenic 2004

Hi. I have a Renault Scenic 1.6 petrol new shape and I have had the battery checked and it has fuel in. We bought it from a neighbour on Friday, used it all weekend and went to start it on Sunday and there was no power. We put it on charge and it worked fine on Monday, then we used it in the afternoon and every time we go below 15nph, pull up to a roundabout or junction it cuts out. We have to accelerate to keep it going, although once driving along it is fine, it is just when we go below 15mph. Any suggestions please?

My Renault Scenic dash is not recognising the Key Card and so I changed the battery...
N Hannan, Lancashire

Renault Scenic 2008

My Renault Scenic`s dash is not recognising the Key Card and so I changed the battery. The battery worked for a period of the journey until I stopped the vehicle. If I put the card in at a particular angle and constantly have my foot on the clutch and press the button it will start. It took 45 minutes the last time to start my car. I have been told this is a common problem, if so this should be a recall on the majority of vehicles sold with this type of mechanism fault. I have also been notified that this is an expensive job. Please can anyone advise?

Hi. I just had some new shockers fitted on my Renault Scenic as the rear end is nearly touching the floor but it`s still the same and it doesn`t have springs on the back end. Does anybody know what`s up or has anybody experienced this before?

Instead of coil springs to keep car up you have torsion bars that twist if your suspension is that low at rear. Looks like bars have gone weak, never done them on a Scenic so that’s about as much as I know. Good luck - Billy M from England

Hi, I have just bought a Renault Scenic 1.4 from a dealer. Second day of driving it and the stop light and oil light have both come on. I`ve topped the oil up and they seemed to go out but 2 minutes into driving and they are back on. They seem to flash on/off a few times before they stay on permanently? I also noticed when I pump the brakes what I think is the abs light flashes as I push the pedal, (only very faintly though). Any suggestions anyone and also ideas of cost? Renault Scenic 2000

My Renault Scenic`s rear wiper works but also has a mind of it`s own. When driving at night with lights on it`s fine, but as soon as you put the left indicator on the rear wiper moves over the window and the rear lights faintly flash as though they’re getting slight interference with the indicator being on. Occasionally during the day the rear wiper moves on it`s own too. I also get the demister light on the dash board and one other dash light above the demister lighting up. I don`t know whether this could be the demister or not as the dash light doesn`t come on for the demister on the dash, as for some reason the demister doesn`t work either. What`s causing all this?

We bought this Renault Scenic a month ago and within a week the heating stopped working...
Aimee Walker, Berkshire

Renault Scenic 2004

Hi, we bought this Renault Scenic a month ago and within a week the heating stopped working. We keep the switch on 4 constantly, as every now and then it comes on for about 5 minutes or so. Any suggestions as to why this happens? Thanks. (diamonique)

Answers

Probably letting in water due to a blocked drain under the bonnet. A sure sign is water or dampness in the passenger footwell. When this happens the water drains directly on to the fan motor which is located under the glove box. Either a good clean or service of the motor or replacement will sort it. They cost about 30 quid from a breakers. Also clean the drains out under the bonnet. They tend to fill up with leaves and debris. Clean it all the way across as it drains on the drivers side - Damo O’Connor from Lancashire

Guess by heating you mean the blower? There is a common fault on this circuit. The wiring loom is under rated and the plug onto the fan unit overheats and melts. There is an upgrade kit available, but Renault charge about £400 to fit. Can be done yourself but tricky without stripping the dash down. The plug is behind the digital speedo - Ceri Jones from Neath Port Talbot

If you need guidance on how to replace the heater resistor then drop me a line. 078269 39033 - Jason Sagar from Cardiff

My Renault Scenic`s battery light came up saying that I had a low battery. I’ve had it tested and replaced but the light is still on. The battery was tested at the garage but it came up as good , the mechanic still put in another battery which also tested as good but the battery light is still on. Does anyone know why and what to do about it? The mechanic has suggested taking the car out for a drive and if the light is still on tomorrow to come back and he will check it again. Your problem is the alternator, 100% - Arben Justi from England

I had my Scenic two months second hand 50k on the clock 54 plate and had the same problem. I got a new battery fitted half an hour after the warning light came on but the light stayed on but despite the new battery. I had no choice and continued on my way home the same day with the light on the dash still. On the motor way at 70mph with out warning I lost power steering, brakes, lights and the car pulled strongly to the left. Lucky there was a slip road to come off on and because it was late no other cars to hit!!! Very scary moment, I had no lights or hazard warning lights, no steering or brakes all had failed - really dangerous. It turned out to be the alternator £150 and 6mth later the car started to say I had a tyre pressure sensor fault, this came as a shock as the car did not have tyre pressure sensors and the power steering stopped working again. I pulled over and restarted the car now the dash has stopped working and the heater only works on 2. A real shame, could have been nice car if it had been made with decent parts. Does anybody know about the electrical wiring for the o/s front seat on a Renault Scenic 2002?
Joel, Essex

Renault Scenic 2002

Does anybody know about the electrical wiring for the o/s front seat on a Renault Scenic 2002? My seat needs repacing because it is torn. I found a replacement but when I came to fit it found that my seat had a wiring loom, with a socket with 3 wires going to a plug, with 2 wires and two separate 2 wire plugs and sockets, one blue the other black. The replacement seat has one plug and socket with 6 wires. Can the new seat wiring be adapted? (Fidji)

Answers

That is the airbag wiring. The seat you bought probably has a lateral airbag as well as tow pyrotechnic retractors. Your original seat probably only has a lapstrap retractor but modifying the airbag wiring is prohibited by Renault because you change the circuits resistance - Travis Cook from South Africa

Your resistor pack will have burnt out on settings 1 and 2. £50 approx for a new resistor pack and with regards to the burning smell I would suggest that should be looked at by a local garage - Dan Devine from Wales

The fault is with your resistor pack, you can either get a replacement £35 off ebay or re solder a new resistor theyre about £1 from Maplin. The burning smell will be caused by the plug that goes to the resistor pack overheating, mines just done the same so you will need to repair it by fitting a new plug also on ebay £35. You have to take off your front wipers and the plastic covers it takes about 45 min or so but quite simple, once you have done that you will see/feel that on both left and right sides there are draining holes that gets blocked it might even have a black rubber "thing" around the hole stick your finger in there to feel the hole and then remove the rubbish; mostly leaves- almost looks like compost .Best to do this once a year or so - Quentin Smith from South Africa

Most probably your heater matrix is leaking. Behind where your heater switches are is a small radiator called a heater matrix, coolant runs through it, when it leaks it’s usually into the passanger footwell. It is also very hard to dry as coolant doesn’t evap - Carl from Hertfordshire

I have the same problem, the switching sequence is out of sink. between the door locks, tailgate lock and remote. I cured it for a few hours today by getting out out the car, opened the tailgate or boot then closed it and locked the car with the remote. When I got back to the car and drove off the fault had gone, ingnition off and the window stayed closed. But on my next trip the R/H door switch operated the N/S door window and the old fault returned. It’s such a stupid fault, Renault and many other people in the know, I am sure could help but they are not prepared to do so unless you pay them £20+. There is an OTS on the Renault Scenic 2 instrument panel. If you take the vehicle to you local dealership they can do a warranty claim where you will be liable for half cost of panel as long as the instrument panel has not been replaced before - Travis Cook from South Africa

Sounds like it maybe the drive shaft has snapped, it’s common on quite a few brands, this includes the Mercedes B Class so it’s not specific to Renault. You quite ofter can hear a slight scraping sound where its snapped, normally involves replacing of complete drive shaft - Shers from England

Exactly the same thing happened to me. It was the driveshaft adapter sleeve. I found one on ebay £16.50 plus delivery. They don’t sell them at car spare shops. You have to remove the driveshaft and it’s on the end - Di Preece from Worcestershire

My Renault Scenic starts first time when cold but when hot sounds like battery not able to turn engine. Fitted brand new battery and would not start. After 45 minutes, while waiting for recovery turned key and started. Green flag mechanic thought it might be an earth problem. Could it be starter problem? Any ideas please? (1.9 dci rx4)

Answers

Had the same problem. It was the starter motor. When they get old they can’t turn the engine over quick enough and the dci engine needs a good spin to start. Problem gets worse when it’s warm cause the starter is up against the back of the block and so heats up with it. Starter wasn’t cheap though and was a bugger to fit, and I’m a mechanic with ramps etc. Hope this helps - Lee Lewis from Norfolk

I have a Renault Scenic 03 and I have had water coming in behind the passenger glove box
Mark Leach, Kent

Renault Scenic 2003

Hi, I have a Renault Scenic 03, the last one in the old shape. I`ve had water coming in behind the passenger glove box leaking into the foot well of the car. The water has managed to get into the fan intake filter and down into the fan itself and now the fan is not working. Is there any way of draining the fan water away? Can I get at the fan to take it out and change?

Answers

I think its 2 screws/ bolts to remove the fan and you have to rotate it through 90Deg to remove it. Once removed, put 12v through it to see if it spins or take it to a loal garage and ask them to do it. If the fan works put it back in, if it doesnt go to the local scrapyard. This is what I’ve found and if you can use a screwdriver it’ll probably take 20 mins. You’ll need torx head drivers: 1. under the bonnet there are drain channels that are suppsed to run down the inner wings and drain out at the bottom. Open the bonnet, remove the 2 piece plastic scuttle panel/ air intake cover (4 screws?), then have a look at the amount of chod/ leaves and gunge that has accumulated at the wing drain hole (its near the bonnet hinge and the fan intake on the bulkhead). This gunge is diverting the water from the normal drain point, back into the fan intake and down to the fan, so clear it and rod/ flush the drain channel. 2. the front sunroof drain channels get blocked. The drain lines are tubes, routed down the A pillars to the rear of the front wheel arches (either side). They finish behind the liner inside the wheel arch and you cant see them! If you dont want to take the wheel/arch liner off, you can rod the drain lines from the open sunroof using approx 5mm thick plastic /nylon wire (i.e. lawnmower /strimmer type stuff), then flush carefully to clear. 3. if your boot fills with water. The rear sunroof also has similar drain channels which route to the rear of the rear wheel arches. If you get under the rear of the car there are plastic covers/ liners at each rear corner which extend from the wheel arch liner. Undo the fitting screws (it’s either 3 or 4) and remove the corner liners. Ease the rear of the wheel arch liner forward and you will see the drainage tubes from the rear sunroof. They will probably have yellow caps on with a flap at the end. The flap is supposed to let the water drain away and keep the crap out, it doesn’t! Cut the flap off and unblock the tube, then carefully pour water down to flush the crap out. If the water doesn’t come out, then the tube has probably come away from the fitting at the sunroof. This means you will have to remove some of the plastic trim lining from inside the rear door/ boot area, which allows the roof head liner to drop a little in order to gain access to the sunroof. Its just a plastic tube on a plastic elbow fitting so push it on. It’s not as bad as it sounds, probably another 15mins, just remember that what comes off first, goes back on last. If you have a haynes manual, the trim removal section is good - Rob Whitfield from Cheshire

Hi. I have problems with my Renault Scenic letting rain water in from under the glove box somewhere. It runs down and collects in the storage compartment in the floor. How do I cure this please? (Expression.petrol)

Answers

I had the same problem. It is just the drain in the front is clogged up. You need to clear it. Open the bonnet on the far sides on the right and left closest to the wind screen there are rubber protectors. Remove these on each side and you will see holes where the water suppose to pass. Clear this up by inserting a wire or water jet to make sure water is flowing freely, remove mud guards in the front tyres. You will see a tube on each side where the water should be passing, there are flaps on it to prevent water from going backwards. You can actually cut the flap covers so water can pass freely - Mel from London

There is a fault on the Renault Scenic which was highlighted on BBC Watchdog a few years back. The electrics on the electronic dashboard fails so that you have absolutely no speed gauge or anything else. I had exactly the same problem and the advice is to take it to a Renault dealer and they "have" to replace the entire dashboard. They contribute most of the cost but you have to pay £150 - Ray Ansbro from England

Hi Martin. This is not an answer for you... I wish it was! We have the same issue, the interior lights work and locking nothing else at all. We think it is to do with water as the dash went haywire after going through a puddle and then after a few miles when we stopped it would not start and has now been dead for a week despite everything possible being checked and rechecked. Water leaks from the windscreen and... like so many of these cars... goes into the passenger footwell and over the engine (and electrics). We will keep trying but really frustrating! The glow plug indicator light on the dashboard comes on and off when I start the car and is fine on short journeys, but on slightly longer ones it will just come on and stay on for the entire journey. What can it be and how can I fix it? Is it something I should panic about and get immediate attention for? Thanks.

Hi. Renault say that their automatic gearboxes are sealed for life, however all hydraulic fluid has it’s day ie. brakes, power steering and also gearboxes. Renault dealers do not have a service schedule and say that the gearbox needs to be removed and sent away for internal inspection by auto specialists. This may true for them but an alternative is to get onto Renault UK, as I did and ask them for the relevant information required to change the hydraulic fluid in the gearbox. There are also pressure switches that can be changed and are best changed when the gearbox fluid is drained. These switches are accessible from outside the gearbox and are electronic. The wife went to use the Renault Scenic with her keycard and struggled to unlock it. The car unlocked and as she got in none of the electrics worked and she was unable start the car or to lock. I went down to have a look and removed the battery cover and wiggled the wires and the electrics come back on and I can now start the car but now my window is stuttering 3 inches at a time opening and closing. I have no clue about cars and the car is still under warranty. Is this a known problem and how serious could it be? Thanks.

Answers

The windows do that after the battery has been disconected. To reset them, send the windows all the way down & hold the switch till you hear a click. Then they have been reset and will work as they should - Adam Fletcher from Derbyshire

Be careful of your key as they can cause heartache. I also have a Scenic and my one and only key will not open the car and would not start the car without assistance. A knife stuck down the side of the key after it was inserted, gave the MoT chap something to smile at! If you find you cannot start the car, try wiggling the key and then slidding a knife down the side. As for the windows, they will have their own problems...it’s a Scenic after all! - Tom from County Londonderry

I have an orange light shaped like a horn with the word auto coming on, the car then feels like it’s dropped a gear and it won’t change gear after that! Anyone know what this light means and what the cause of the problem could be?

Answers

It’s called "limp home" mode in the manual. To clear it, stop and restart the car. If it keeps coming on (as it does on our Scenic), you need to get the transmission investigated. It might be a problem with the internal pressure sensor, might be a problem with the hydraulic distributor - Andrew Treloar from Australia

Hi, I have a problem with my back door on my 2002 1.6-litre Renault Scenic. My back door does not open and I realised that the button doesn’t come up and the door is still locked. Are there any ideas for me to unlock it?

Answers

On the back of the button, the rubber ring has broken off, you can fit a small o ring onto it & it will work again. Don’t go to Renault, they will say you need a new button at the cost of £75-£100, you can get an o rig set from Halfords for about £7-£10 - Owen Gallagher from England

I’ve had the same. If you’ve got a Scenic with the rear opening window you’ll have to undo the the top of the boot door lining and squeeze your hand down to release the mechanism. Then you can take the complete lining out when boot open and change the rubber ’o’ ring - Steve P from Yorkshire

I just changed the timing belt on my Renault Scenic and had a full service. Now, the SERV light and the AIRBAG sign comes on and off. My steering wheel gives a creaky noise as well. What could be the reason? Or, are these signs related to each other? Thanks!

Answers

It may well be the seat belt tensioner cables under the seat of the car. Look under your passenger seat and look for cables joined by a connector. These can come dislodged with the seat movement. Push them together and if you have any electric tape handy then wrap it round the connector. Mine happens on a regular basis and I just ignore it until I’m working at the car again - George Anderson from County Down

We have just purchased a Renault Scenic Expression. Is it normal for the air conditioning to come on automatically when the engine is turned on? Also, there is a clicking noise when the engine is turned off, any clues what this might be?

Answers

It’s a relay behind fuse tray in glove box, if you have been through a lot of water or driving rain moisture builds up under fuse tray under bonnet (left hand side of battery) when heating especially air con is on fans suck air in as behind battery this will let moisture build up in between front and back. Put a hair drier between battery and fuse tray under bonnett for about an hour and leave engine running. This problem occurs as air con is on. Check rear of car for damp - Richard Cook from Norfolk

I wondered this too then worked out when the heating controls are set to clear the front windscreen the AC automatically turns on! This should fix it - Gordon M from Scotland

It’s an altenator fault. It’s not charging your battery and so it runs flat quickly. You can change the battery, but it won’t last long. All you have to do is disconnect the radio. Renault did this for me in 2 mins and when I lock up now the time and temperture go out as it should. They ordered me a new radio as mine is under warranty. I’d phone Renault and explain this to them, don’t take it to any other garage as I bet they will tell you it’s your battery or altenator or something else just to make money. You are overfilling the washer. The filler neck has an interferance joint where it goes into the bottle and the water comes out of there when overfilled. Syphon some out and the problem will be solved - Ken Seguss from London

Renault Scenic 2002

About a month ago this car failed to start; it was in my garage. The excellent folk that maintain it had no suggestion to make. I spent the weekend of poking around - during which I pushed the red reset button which seems to be part of a safety system, though it did not seem to need it, and made no difference anyway. After removing one of the coils for checking - it was ok - the car started and has run well ever since - until now, that is, when once again it is as dead as a dodo. Could anyone suggest what it might be please? Something seems to have cut off the fuel - a malfunctioning safety device? (EXP+AUTO)
