My Renault Megane Scenic jerked a day or two about 6 months ago but stopped. Now it`s back again. Can anyone please explain to me what the problem could be?

My 53 plate Renault Megane Scenic keeps showing a gearbox fault message. It was only doing it every 6 months or so but now it`s happening most days. It`s been into the garage on the computer and is not coming up with any faults! I`ve read on a few forums that it could be a variety of different things that could be wrong. Can anyone help with this problem please? Thanks.

Following a recent service and MOT it has proved impossible to reset the "service" light and "spanner" on the dashboard of my Renault Scenic and the "miles to next service" remains on zero and indicates "change oil now". Please can anyone help?
Using the buttons on the left stick that you use to toggle through mpg etc select the service screen which reads 0 miles to next service and hold in one of the buttons. I’m sure either work, just hold one in after about 10-15 seconds the screen starts to flash do not let go of the button yet about 3-4 seconds later it all resets and shows 18000 miles till next service. It works on my 2008 model, I’m sure it will be the same for you. Good luck - David Williams from England
Keep the button pressed in on the indicator stalk for 5 seconds and it will reset it - Glen Baker from Norfolk
Hi. I have exactly the same problem. The ’stalk’ reset only succeeds in resetting service interval to zero / nil / 0 and the spanner and service indicator immediately return. Had Scenic serviced and codes read - no fault present. Only solution left is Renault who want £50. Any ideas? John Painter from Suffolk

The vdu on my Renault Scenic has been playing up. I had 71,000 on the clock. The vdu goes off every now and then for a few seconds and makes a beeping sound, but I noticed when it came back on that the mileage is now reading 153,000 which is impossible. Does anyone have any idea if a new screen will correct the mileage? (1.9 dci)
It will stop the problem but the vdu display will read 0 miles. Is a common fault had this a few times - Ashi Jones from Cheshire

Hi, I recently had my 2005 Renault Scenic display a check gearbox message. The fault on the diagnostic machine read turbine speed sensor information and Glen at Greenaway electrics said it`s a problem with the speed sensor in the gear box. When I select reverse the red box that surrounds the R does not appear and it clunks into gear and then if I try to reverse the auto handbrake does not release. However if the handbrake is taken off manually it will reverse. When I select other gears on Park/Neutral/Drive the red box appears around them as normal. Since the message "check gearbox" first appeared 2 days ago, Alvin our mechanic has checked all wires around the gear selector stick and found no issues. He also put half a litre of gear box oil in. The chassis no is VF1JM0J0A33259318 Renault Scenic 1.6 16v auto petrol. Has anyone experienced this or does anyone have any info at all please? (auto)

Hi. I have a Renault Scenic 1.6 petrol new shape and I have had the battery checked and it has fuel in. We bought it from a neighbour on Friday, used it all weekend and went to start it on Sunday and there was no power. We put it on charge and it worked fine on Monday, then we used it in the afternoon and every time we go below 15nph, pull up to a roundabout or junction it cuts out. We have to accelerate to keep it going, although once driving along it is fine, it is just when we go below 15mph. Any suggestions please?
I personally would take it back to your neighbour, I’m not being funny saying this, I’m very serious. Even buying private you have rights and I find it very hard to believe they did not know about this problem - David Williams from England

My Renault Scenic`s dash is not recognising the Key Card and so I changed the battery. The battery worked for a period of the journey until I stopped the vehicle. If I put the card in at a particular angle and constantly have my foot on the clutch and press the button it will start. It took 45 minutes the last time to start my car. I have been told this is a common problem, if so this should be a recall on the majority of vehicles sold with this type of mechanism fault. I have also been notified that this is an expensive job. Please can anyone advise?
Hi, try putting a piece of thin card next to key then place into slot. Should start first time - Michael Smith from Durham
Try using the spare key also, original key card cd be damaged - Mart from England

My Renault Scenic`s dash has recently told me that I need an oil change soon. Can anyone tell me how soon and how much this will roughly cost? My car is due an MOT in April. Thanks.
The message is generated by the on board computer from the service interval screen. I would go by your service book and just reset the screen when you next have it serviced, don’t worry about it, check the service book for when the last one was and when the next should be - David Williams from England

Hi. I just had some new shockers fitted on my Renault Scenic as the rear end is nearly touching the floor but it`s still the same and it doesn`t have springs on the back end. Does anybody know what`s up or has anybody experienced this before?
Instead of coil springs to keep car up you have torsion bars that twist if your suspension is that low at rear. Looks like bars have gone weak, never done them on a Scenic so that’s about as much as I know. Good luck - Billy M from England

I allowed the fuel to run down too low in my Renault Scenic, filled it up and more or less immediately the engine management light came on and the car won’t run smoothly, like it`s got dirt in the system. If this is the problem, can anyone tell me how best to clean it out please? (1.6 Expression)

Out of the blue I went to start my Renault Scenic and nothing happened, the engine wouldn’t even turn over. However the radio and lights would come on but there was no power at all to the engine. It seemed strange as it worked perfectly okay 10 minutes before. It is currently at the garage but they are struggling to find the fault. Please can anyone advise what the problem might be?
Sounds like the starter motor. You can try and tap it with a hammer as sometimes the brushes get stuck inside. If this fails you can bump start the car either by pushing it or rolling downhill. Sounds like you will need to get it fixed or replaced though - Ken Mercer from England

My Renault Scenic`s radio won`t work. It says I need to enter a code but the code in the book won`t work. Does anybody have a code as the Renault garage I bought it from is no longer there? Thanks.
You will need a specific code, not just anyone, and any Renault garage can get this for you and should not really charge for this service either - David Williams from England

Hi, I have just bought a Renault Scenic 1.4 from a dealer. Second day of driving it and the stop light and oil light have both come on. I`ve topped the oil up and they seemed to go out but 2 minutes into driving and they are back on. They seem to flash on/off a few times before they stay on permanently? I also noticed when I pump the brakes what I think is the abs light flashes as I push the pedal, (only very faintly though). Any suggestions anyone and also ideas of cost? I don`t fancy spending a fortune on it!
Sounds like the oil sensor switch, not sure where it is but if you can find it, check the connector is not wet/dirty. Give it a squirt of wd40 on the wire connector to clean. Only saying as I had this sort of problem before on another make of car and it worked for me - Jerry from Gloucestershire

My Renault Scenic just keeps cutting out but not till after about 4 miles of driving it. The fan comes on then when it goes off the car starts again. I’ve no lights that come on the dash board and the temperature stays in the middle. It`s only been doing this for about a week now. What can be the problem does anyone know?
The only thing I can say is u r better off getting rid now!!! I have owned Scenic’s for many years and the amount of money I have spent on getting the electrical problems sorted, I could of gone and bought a brand new 2012 Scenic! I loved the new shape and after having problem after problem I could not resist them, so to my other half’s disappointment I kept buying them, but boy I have learnt the hard way. I have now put my Scenic in scrap yard and gone for Vauxhall instead, my advise to anyone who is having problems or are considering in buying a renault Scenic STAY AWAY!!!! U may as well put ur hard earned money into something that is reliable and stay away from the French s**t!! Vicki from England

Our Renault Scenic`s car alarm keeps going off. First it was only during the night, now it keeps going off any time of the day. We tried leaving it open but it still goes off for no reason. We have had a garage look at it but they don’t have an answer for us. What can we do?
Hi. I did have the same but I think I have cured the problem. I now double click the Renault key card and up to now the problem has never returned. My car is also 2007 model on 1.5 dci diesel. Hope this answers your question - John Rees from Pembrokeshire

Hello, I had my Renault Scenic`s antifreeze changed today and on way home once the car temperature had reached the halfway point it cut out. I had a look round and could not see a problem. Two hours later I tried it and it started, so I went on a run and all was okay, I parked up and left it on tick over for 10 minutes. Once the temperature rose to halfway it just cut out and won`t start. Any ideas?

My Renault Scenic`s rear wiper works but also has a mind of it`s own. When driving at night with lights on it`s fine, but as soon as you put the left indicator on the rear wiper moves over the window and the rear lights faintly flash as though they’re getting slight interference with the indicator being on. Occasionally during the day the rear wiper moves on it`s own too. I also get the demister light on the dash board and one other dash light above the demister lighting up. I don`t know whether this could be the demister or not as the dash light doesn`t come on for the demister on the dash, as for some reason the demister doesn`t work either. What`s causing all this?

Hi, we bought this Renault Scenic a month ago and within a week the heating stopped working. We keep the switch on 4 constantly, as every now and then it comes on for about 5 minutes or so. Any suggestions as to why this happens? Thanks. (diamonique)
Probably letting in water due to a blocked drain under the bonnet. A sure sign is water or dampness in the passenger footwell. When this happens the water drains directly on to the fan motor which is located under the glove box. Either a good clean or service of the motor or replacement will sort it. They cost about 30 quid from a breakers. Also clean the drains out under the bonnet. They tend to fill up with leaves and debris. Clean it all the way across as it drains on the drivers side - Damo O’Connor from Lancashire
Guess by heating you mean the blower? There is a common fault on this circuit. The wiring loom is under rated and the plug onto the fan unit overheats and melts. There is an upgrade kit available, but Renault charge about £400 to fit. Can be done yourself but tricky without stripping the dash down. The plug is behind the digital speedo - Ceri Jones from Neath Port Talbot
If you need guidance on how to replace the heater resistor then drop me a line. 078269 39033 - Jason Sagar from Cardiff

My Renault Scenic is switching off / cutting off power when slowing down to stop in traffic, but not all the time. It has a problem idleing. After I sent it in for a service 2 months ago, the fan belt and water pump were replaced, then this problem started. The service centre cannot find the issue causing this. Any ideas?
This due to the change in demand on the cars electrics, by the new belt and pump. You need to get the spark plugs and coils that sit above them replaced and check that the battery is at a good charge level. The renault is famous for its unreliable coils... D B from England

My Renault Scenic`s battery light came up saying that I had a low battery. I’ve had it tested and replaced but the light is still on. The battery was tested at the garage but it came up as good , the mechanic still put in another battery which also tested as good but the battery light is still on. Does anyone know why and what to do about it? The mechanic has suggested taking the car out for a drive and if the light is still on tomorrow to come back and he will check it again. Any answers gratefully received.
Your problem is the alternator, 100% - Arben Justi from England
I had my Scenic two months second hand 50k on the clock 54 plate and had the same problem. I got a new battery fitted half an hour after the warning light came on but the light stayed on but despite the new battery. I had no choice and continued on my way home the same day with the light on the dash still. On the motor way at 70mph with out warning I lost power steering, brakes, lights and the car pulled strongly to the left. Lucky there was a slip road to come off on and because it was late no other cars to hit!!! Very scary moment, I had no lights or hazard warning lights, no steering or brakes all had failed - really dangerous. It turned out to be the alternator £150 and 6mth later the car started to say I had a tyre pressure sensor fault, this came as a shock as the car did not have tyre pressure sensors and the power steering stopped working again. I pulled over and restarted the car now the dash has stopped working and the heater only works on 2. A real shame, could have been nice car if it had been made with decent parts. When you turn the airbag disabler key on my Renault Scenic to off (it’s located on the driver`s side when the door is open), does it disable both airbags in the front? I need to turn off the front airbag on the passenger side as I need to put a rear-facing child seat in the front. Any ideas? Thanks.

Does anybody know about the electrical wiring for the o/s front seat on a Renault Scenic 2002? My seat needs repacing because it is torn. I found a replacement but when I came to fit it found that my seat had a wiring loom, with a socket with 3 wires going to a plug, with 2 wires and two separate 2 wire plugs and sockets, one blue the other black. The replacement seat has one plug and socket with 6 wires. Can the new seat wiring be adapted? (Fidji)
That is the airbag wiring. The seat you bought probably has a lateral airbag as well as tow pyrotechnic retractors. Your original seat probably only has a lapstrap retractor but modifying the airbag wiring is prohibited by Renault because you change the circuits resistance - Travis Cook from South Africa

Hello, my Renault Scenic has a couple of problems. The heating only works on settings 3 and 4 and also when I turn on the rear demister there is a smell of burning. I just wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to how to fix it? Cheers. (megane scenic dynamique)
Your resistor pack will have burnt out on settings 1 and 2. £50 approx for a new resistor pack and with regards to the burning smell I would suggest that should be looked at by a local garage - Dan Devine from Wales
The fault is with your resistor pack, you can either get a replacement £35 off ebay or re solder a new resistor theyre about £1 from Maplin. The burning smell will be caused by the plug that goes to the resistor pack overheating, mines just done the same so you will need to repair it by fitting a new plug also on ebay £35. Hi, the passenger footwell carpet of my Renault Scenic seems to be constantly wet. We have looked under the glove compartment but the water doesn’t seem to be coming from there. There are some plastic bunges on the rear of the front wheel arch, do these just pull out? Can anyone help please? Thanks. (dynamic)
You have to take off your front wipers and the plastic covers it takes about 45 min or so but quite simple, once you have done that you will see/feel that on both left and right sides there are draining holes that gets blocked it might even have a black rubber "thing" around the hole stick your finger in there to feel the hole and then remove the rubbish; mostly leaves- almost looks like compost .Best to do this once a year or so - Quentin Smith from South Africa
Most probably your heater matrix is leaking. Behind where your heater switches are is a small radiator called a heater matrix, coolant runs through it, when it leaks it’s usually into the passanger footwell. It is also very hard to dry as coolant doesn’t evap - Carl from Hertfordshire

This morning I went out in my Renault Scenic. When I reached my destination, I turned the engine off as usual. As I turned the ignition off the driver`s side window came down! I tried this several times and it happened every time. The only way I can keep the window up is to hold the electric lever in place whilst I turn the engine off. Any ideas on what the problem is and how much to repair it?
I have the same problem, the switching sequence is out of sink. between the door locks, tailgate lock and remote. I cured it for a few hours today by getting out out the car, opened the tailgate or boot then closed it and locked the car with the remote. When I got back to the car and drove off the fault had gone, ingnition off and the window stayed closed. But on my next trip the R/H door switch operated the N/S door window and the old fault returned. It’s such a stupid fault, Renault and many other people in the know, I am sure could help but they are not prepared to do so unless you pay them £20+. I will try a different sequence and see if it can be cured somehow - Max Morris from Rhondda Cynon Taff

I also noticed that there was a quite noticable drip coming from under the dashboard near the pedals. Is it a common problem or it is a one off? Does anyone know where all this water is coming from and why? All of the other compartments and carpets were dry. I hope someone will be able to help. Thank you.

I have a Renault Scenic 2004. When I start the car, the instruction cluster sometimes blacks out with a beep and than lights up after the engine has been running for a while. I have to reset the time after each start-up and it loses it again each time I turn the car off. Other than this and once the car is on and moving there is no problem. Can anyone suggest what is causing this?
I’m sorry to say but I think your instrument panel is failing, eventually it will fail completely. Renault will replace it for £150 - Steve from England
The first response does not solve this problem because it recommends a solution that is in England rather than one in South Africa. It would appear that this is common with the Renault. I tried the local dealer and Renault South Africa before the expiry of the wartanty; but they do not respond - Harold Madikoto from South Africa
There is an OTS on the Renault Scenic 2 instrument panel. If you take the vehicle to you local dealership they can do a warranty claim where you will be liable for half cost of panel as long as the instrument panel has not been replaced before - Travis Cook from South Africa
You can get the cluster repaired for around £85 with a lifetime guarantee, check ebay - Dave from Lancashire
Thank you for the responses. The local dealer will be fixing this - I think they should also be having a lifetime gaunrantee, but they reckon they are doing me a favour because the car is out of warranty. They are charging me +- R1 500.00. I plan to take this up with the local consumer commissioner - Harold Madikoto from South Africa

I was driving my Renault Scenic down the road and stopped to let cars through. I let the clutch out and suddenly I had no drive, it went with no warning and no bang or noise. The gear box is not noisy. Could anyone help please? Thanks.
Could be a driveshaft cv joint that has let go usually its the right hand one that breaks - zig zag from Yorkshire
Sounds more like your clutch to me - Peter Cank from London
Sounds like it maybe the drive shaft has snapped, it’s common on quite a few brands, this includes the Mercedes B Class so it’s not specific to Renault. You quite ofter can hear a slight scraping sound where its snapped, normally involves replacing of complete drive shaft - Shers from England
Exactly the same thing happened to me. It was the driveshaft adapter sleeve. I found one on ebay £16.50 plus delivery. They don’t sell them at car spare shops. You have to remove the driveshaft and it’s on the end - Di Preece from Worcestershire

I`ve just been told 2 coil packs have gone on my Renault Scenic and the ecu unit is faulty. To have this work done I have been told it would cost £400. Is it easy enough to replace these myself? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I recently had two coil packs fitted to my 2005 Scenic auto at a cost of £30 inc labour (they are around £15 each) so I would look at the ecu fault and see how much that repair is. My Renault Scenic starts first time when cold but when hot sounds like battery not able to turn engine. Fitted brand new battery and would not start. After 45 minutes, while waiting for recovery turned key and started. Green flag mechanic thought it might be an earth problem. Could it be starter problem? Any ideas please? (1.9 dci rx4)
Had the same problem. It was the starter motor. When they get old they can’t turn the engine over quick enough and the dci engine needs a good spin to start. Problem gets worse when it’s warm cause the starter is up against the back of the block and so heats up with it. Starter wasn’t cheap though and was a bugger to fit, and I’m a mechanic with ramps etc. Hope this helps - Lee Lewis from Norfolk
Hi. It could be the Crank Shaft Sensor, we had a similar problem with ours. It would strat fine some days then point blankly refuse to start even if it had been started before! I replaced battery, coils and plugs before chap from Green Flag said it could be the crank shaft sensor. It cost me £10 and replaced it by myself and sorted the problem. Never did it again! Hi, I have a Renault Scenic 03, the last one in the old shape. I`ve had water coming in behind the passenger glove box leaking into the foot well of the car. The water has managed to get into the fan intake filter and down into the fan itself and now the fan is not working. Is there any way of draining the fan water away? Can I get at the fan to take it out and change?
I think its 2 screws/ bolts to remove the fan and you have to rotate it through 90Deg to remove it. Once removed, put 12v through it to see if it spins or take it to a loal garage and ask them to do it. If the fan works put it back in, if it doesnt go to the local scrapyard. This is what I’ve found and if you can use a screwdriver it’ll probably take 20 mins. You’ll need torx head drivers: 1. under the bonnet there are drain channels that are suppsed to run down the inner wings and drain out at the bottom. Open the bonnet, remove the 2 piece plastic scuttle panel/ air intake cover (4 screws?), then have a look at the amount of chod/ leaves and gunge that has accumulated at the wing drain hole (its near the bonnet hinge and the fan intake on the bulkhead). This gunge is diverting the water from the normal drain point, back into the fan intake and down to the fan, so clear it and rod/ flush the drain channel. 2. the front sunroof drain channels get blocked. The drain lines are tubes, routed down the A pillars to the rear of the front wheel arches (either side). They finish behind the liner inside the wheel arch and you cant see them! If you dont want to take the wheel/arch liner off, you can rod the drain lines from the open sunroof using approx 5mm thick plastic /nylon wire (i.e. lawnmower /strimmer type stuff), then flush carefully to clear. 3. if your boot fills with water. The rear sunroof also has similar drain channels which route to the rear of the rear wheel arches. If you get under the rear of the car there are plastic covers/ liners at each rear corner which extend from the wheel arch liner. Undo the fitting screws (it’s either 3 or 4) and remove the corner liners. Ease the rear of the wheel arch liner forward and you will see the drainage tubes from the rear sunroof. They will probably have yellow caps on with a flap at the end. The flap is supposed to let the water drain away and keep the crap out, it doesn’t! Cut the flap off and unblock the tube, then carefully pour water down to flush the crap out. If the water doesn’t come out, then the tube has probably come away from the fitting at the sunroof. This means you will have to remove some of the plastic trim lining from inside the rear door/ boot area, which allows the roof head liner to drop a little in order to gain access to the sunroof. Its just a plastic tube on a plastic elbow fitting so push it on. It’s not as bad as it sounds, probably another 15mins, just remember that what comes off first, goes back on last. If you have a haynes manual, the trim removal section is good - Rob Whitfield from Cheshire

Hi. I have problems with my Renault Scenic letting rain water in from under the glove box somewhere. It runs down and collects in the storage compartment in the floor. How do I cure this please? (Expression.petrol)
I had the same problem. It is just the drain in the front is clogged up. You need to clear it. Open the bonnet on the far sides on the right and left closest to the wind screen there are rubber protectors. Remove these on each side and you will see holes where the water suppose to pass. Clear this up by inserting a wire or water jet to make sure water is flowing freely, remove mud guards in the front tyres. You will see a tube on each side where the water should be passing, there are flaps on it to prevent water from going backwards. You can actually cut the flap covers so water can pass freely - Mel from London

I have a 2006 1.6 vvt Renault Scenic. The battery had gone flat because it had not been used for a while so I tried to jump start it with no luck and I removed the battery and charged it. Having replaced the battery now the car will not start. If I press the clutch or brake pedal it just makes a loud beep and flashes up an error display "Low battery, Low oil pressure and hand brake fail". The engine oil level is okay. I connected a booster pack giving out 20 amps and finally I can hear the electronic handbrake releasing but it just sits there beeping and will not start. Does anyone know what I can do? (1.6vvt)

On entry to my Renault Scenic there is apparently no power to the dashboard or any of the electrics. The central locking works but nothing else. The fuses all look okay and the battery is charged. Any ideas? (1.9 dci)
There is a fault on the Renault Scenic which was highlighted on BBC Watchdog a few years back. The electrics on the electronic dashboard fails so that you have absolutely no speed gauge or anything else. I had exactly the same problem and the advice is to take it to a Renault dealer and they "have" to replace the entire dashboard. They contribute most of the cost but you have to pay £150 - Ray Ansbro from England
Hi Martin. This is not an answer for you... I wish it was! We have the same issue, the interior lights work and locking nothing else at all. We think it is to do with water as the dash went haywire after going through a puddle and then after a few miles when we stopped it would not start and has now been dead for a week despite everything possible being checked and rechecked. Water leaks from the windscreen and... like so many of these cars... goes into the passenger footwell and over the engine (and electrics). We will keep trying but really frustrating! Good luck - Hilary Sidelmann from Denbighshire

My Renault Scenic`s radio keeps beeping while it is playing and I can`t get it to stop. Any ideas?
You need to re-insert the 4 digit pass code that should be on the back or inside of the manual. When you have put in the last digit, you need to hold down the number ’6’ for a longer time (ie press and hold) until it beeps. Other options will appear once you have done this. Press 6 to store these options until you come to ’radio’ you should be able to tune your radio stations without the beeps. These instructions are in the manual in the small print... Hello, I bought a used Renault Scenic a week ago and there is SERVICE light on the display. Can anyone tell me what does this light mean? (1.5dci)
The service light being on means that it is due a service. For a 1.5 dci it’s 12000 miles, there should also be a small spanner showing as well. If you want to get rid of the service light. After you have done the service and while it is showing on the dash press either button on the end of the stalk and hold it until the service light goes out, it will show 12000 miles for a few secs then dissappear. Hi. Renault say that their automatic gearboxes are sealed for life, however all hydraulic fluid has it’s day ie. brakes, power steering and also gearboxes. Renault dealers do not have a service schedule and say that the gearbox needs to be removed and sent away for internal inspection by auto specialists. This may true for them but an alternative is to get onto Renault UK, as I did and ask them for the relevant information required to change the hydraulic fluid in the gearbox. There are also pressure switches that can be changed and are best changed when the gearbox fluid is drained. These switches are accessible from outside the gearbox and are electronic. Hope this helps. Regards - Fred Jackson from Gwynedd

Hi. The passenger door of my Renault Scenic has been dented and I have been told that it`s probably cheaper to replace the door as long as I get a colour match. Can I put a Scenic door on my Scenic Dymanique? Is the body shape the same or is the Dymanique a larger vehicle than a standard Scenic please? Thanks.
"Dynamique" refers to the trim level, the car body is the same size. The only difference between doors of different trim levels is the handle colour (body colour/chrome/brushed metal). This assumes neither is a Grand Scenic (the seven seat version) - Allison from England

Hi. I’m wondering if anyone can give me some advise please. I’ve had this car since August and had no bother with it. I’ve just had it MOT’d and it passed without any trouble. I parked up the other day for about 20 mins and when I came back, I couldn’t drive it. The gears had stuck and I couldn’t get 1st or 2nd. I had to get it towed home. What could have caused this? Does any one know how much this kind of repair costs? Thank you. (Dynamique)
Hi, similar thing happened to me, I don’t know what caused mine, but it cost me 580 quid to get it fixed, then had trouble with steering after, as often when removing gear box, it pulls all the wiring out of the steering column and my steering all had to be re-wired. Make sure you take it to a Renault garage, and work out if it will be financially viable, as I ended up spending more more on it than it was worth. Good luck - Helen Scott from Gloucestershire

My Renault Scenic’s battery is swollen from the sides for about 2 months now. Now I battle to start as if the battery is flat. My alternator pushes 13 volts when idling, which proves that it’s charging normally. But once I switch OFF the engine the problem begins. Does this mean that the battery has packed up? If so, what it the best battery size for this car? Regards, Zolani. (2.0L 16V 6spd Gear Box)
Yes, chances are it has packed up. I think a 645 works fine - Travis Cook from South Africa

Hi, I have just got a Renault Scenic Scenic 1.6, and when you put the key in and switch it on its says the oil level is okay, but when you drive off it beeps then says oil pressure low, and the stop and oil sign comes on. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi, my wife was driving our Renault Megane Scenic 1.9 dci today when suddenly the throttle stopped working, the revs disappeared but it didn’t cut out. I lost all power but after a few seconds it came back again. Can any of you lovely people help with this problem as I am worried that it will happen at 70mph in the fast lane. Kind regards.
Sounds like electronic throttle pedal or loom to same is going. When this happens you loose revs, it’ll tick over but not more. Get a diagnostic check which will show this. How can I put my key cards into hands free mode on my Renault Scenic? The handbook seems to suggest the card can be either manual or hands free but I have to press the keycard to unlock. (Dynamique)
I think the hands-free mode is only standard on the Privilege trim levels. The wife went to use the Renault Scenic with her keycard and struggled to unlock it. The car unlocked and as she got in none of the electrics worked and she was unable start the car or to lock. I went down to have a look and removed the battery cover and wiggled the wires and the electrics come back on and I can now start the car but now my window is stuttering 3 inches at a time opening and closing. I have no clue about cars and the car is still under warranty. Is this a known problem and how serious could it be? Thanks.
The windows do that after the battery has been disconected. To reset them, send the windows all the way down & hold the switch till you hear a click. Then they have been reset and will work as they should - Adam Fletcher from Derbyshire
Be careful of your key as they can cause heartache. I also have a Scenic and my one and only key will not open the car and would not start the car without assistance. A knife stuck down the side of the key after it was inserted, gave the MoT chap something to smile at! I have an orange light shaped like a horn with the word auto coming on, the car then feels like it’s dropped a gear and it won’t change gear after that! Anyone know what this light means and what the cause of the problem could be?
It’s called "limp home" mode in the manual. To clear it, stop and restart the car. If it keeps coming on (as it does on our Scenic), you need to get the transmission investigated. It might be a problem with the internal pressure sensor, might be a problem with the hydraulic distributor - Andrew Treloar from Australia

Hi, I have a problem with my back door on my 2002 1.6-litre Renault Scenic. My back door does not open and I realised that the button doesn’t come up and the door is still locked. Are there any ideas for me to unlock it?
On the back of the button, the rubber ring has broken off, you can fit a small o ring onto it & it will work again. Don’t go to Renault, they will say you need a new button at the cost of £75-£100, you can get an o rig set from Halfords for about £7-£10 - Owen Gallagher from England
I’ve had the same. If you’ve got a Scenic with the rear opening window you’ll have to undo the the top of the boot door lining and squeeze your hand down to release the mechanism. Then you can take the complete lining out when boot open and change the rubber ’o’ ring - Steve P from Yorkshire

I just changed the timing belt on my Renault Scenic and had a full service. Now, the SERV light and the AIRBAG sign comes on and off. My steering wheel gives a creaky noise as well. What could be the reason? Or, are these signs related to each other? Thanks!
It may well be the seat belt tensioner cables under the seat of the car. Look under your passenger seat and look for cables joined by a connector. These can come dislodged with the seat movement. Push them together and if you have any electric tape handy then wrap it round the connector. Mine happens on a regular basis and I just ignore it until I’m working at the car again - George Anderson from County Down

We have just purchased a Renault Scenic Expression. Is it normal for the air conditioning to come on automatically when the engine is turned on? Also, there is a clicking noise when the engine is turned off, any clues what this might be?
It’s a relay behind fuse tray in glove box, if you have been through a lot of water or driving rain moisture builds up under fuse tray under bonnet (left hand side of battery) when heating especially air con is on fans suck air in as behind battery this will let moisture build up in between front and back. Put a hair drier between battery and fuse tray under bonnett for about an hour and leave engine running. This problem occurs as air con is on. Check rear of car for damp - Richard Cook from Norfolk
I wondered this too then worked out when the heating controls are set to clear the front windscreen the AC automatically turns on! This should fix it - Gordon M from Scotland

There is a tinny rattling noise coming from my Scenic. It gets worse when accelerating and calms down when I take my foot of the accelerator. It sounds like it’s coming from just underneath me, around the gear stick area. Any ideas as to what this could be? (1.6e)

I have checked the door switches and the interior light stays on when the doors are shut. The switch seems to be working, could it be the circuit behind the interior light? Could you help as this problem is driving me mad! Thanks.

My car just clicks when I try to start it. It is saying steering locked...? This has happened before but it corrected itself quite quickly. But no luck this time. The battery isn’t very old and everything else is working. Wipers, lights, radio, just clicks when I press the button....? Any ideas....? Thank you.
You might want to check the backlight on the dash... on my Megane it remains on when the car is turned off causing the battery to drain. When I come to start it the battery is flat and it just clicks. I read on a fourm that if the light is the problem the system needs resetting... Mickey S from England
Turn the steering wheel at the same time as you press start as you would a car with a key. It sometimes cannot unlock if the steering wheel is tight against the locking mechanism without help - Colin from Dumfriesshire
Your ignition will not switch on until your steering is unlocked. If you have a steering lock fault then there could be multiple errors such as a broken line, lock is jammed or steering lock solenoid has burnt out. Your best bet is to see an auto electrician or better yet a Renault dealer as a fault with steering lock could potentially be dangerous - Travis Cook from South Africa

Why, on occassions, will my car not always start first time, taking 2 to 3 turns? Is there a common fault that is easily rectified?

When the car has been sitting for a period of time the brakes do not seem to work the first time you apply them. However, if you apply the break a 2nd time the brakes come on and for the rest of the journey there is no issue. Does anyone know why this could be?
Hi David, this happened to me after Christmas when the car had lain for a couple of days. I bled the brakes and touch wood, that seems to have cured it - Kenneth from Ayrshire

The warning light second from the right, shaped like a zig zag electrical symbol, next to the heater coil symbol has come on. Could you please tell me what this symbol means? Thank you!
We had a 1.9 dci with the same problem, the light is related to the engine management, our problem was that the air flow meter was knackered. It’s an easy replacement, follow the air hose up onto the inlet manifold and you’ll find a circular piece with a rectangular electrical connector on. Unscrew bolts and jubilee clip and replace one for the other. WORD OF WARNING, USE GENUINE RENAULT REPLACEMENT as the supplying garage replaced ours TWICE with a pattern part which failed again! I got hacked off with mine and unplugged the air flow meter multiplug, the car ran fine and passed the MOT no problems. Hope this helps - Phil Pickering from Kent

I have a Renault Megane Scenic dynam +dci 2002. The car wouldn’t start recently due to cold weather and now the radio needs code to start up. Does anyone know the code?

A week ago I bought a new battery, car no problem, a week later, as I went downtown, ran about 20 kilometres, shut off the engine, went shopping and when I tried to fire the vehicle again it did not crank. I had to use the jump cables to make it start again. What do you think about this? Is it possible the coils are getting hot and they need to be changed? Please answer as soon as you can, thanks a lot!
It’s an altenator fault. It’s not charging your battery and so it runs flat quickly. You can change the battery, but it won’t last long. I did it few days ago and when my new battery ran flat the lights in my Scenic flashed and changed like in Las Vegas - low battery, parking brake failure, steering failure, injection failure and then the car stopped. It was an alternator. 300 EUR renovated, 600 EUR new. Sorry - Luka Camlek from Slovenia

The rear windscreen of my Scenic shattered sometime on Tues eve/night. On Wed. afternoon the insurance co put crashwrap on it. (Can’t fit a new windscreen for a week). On Thursday, the radio didn’t work; on Saturday the battery had gone completely flat. The RAC jumpstarted it but could not say what had caused it. I haven’t used it since then. Today (Monday) it is flat again, and I can’t unlock the doors with the card. Why is this happening? Any ideas please, please, please. I feel it is to do with the windscreen, and damp? (Grand)

The radio stopped working 3 days ago and I noticed that when I turned the engine off and then locked the doors the temperature and date remained displayed on the dashboard. This morning the car will not start as the battery is drained. What can be causing the display to stay on when it is off and doors double locked and making drain the battery?
Hi there, had same problem excatly this morning. It’s a problem with the radio. I phoned Renault today and they said they’ve had numerous problems like this. All you have to do is disconnect the radio. Renault did this for me in 2 mins and when I lock up now the time and temperture go out as it should. They ordered me a new radio as mine is under warranty. I’d phone Renault and explain this to them, don’t take it to any other garage as I bet they will tell you it’s your battery or altenator or something else just to make money. Let me know how you get on. Cheers - Adrian Young from Ayrshire

Is there a fuse for the engine management light? The car won’t start and the computer won’t read the fault without light on.
Found the 2 fuses. To anyone who has connected jumper leads up the wrong way, there is a 5 amp fuse on the immobliser box and a 5 amp fuse on the fuse box - Tony Regan from Ireland

We have a problem with our door lights. The interior light stays on and the red light that says a door is open stays on. I have checked all the doors and petrol flap but they are all shut. Has anyone got any ideas why this is happening please?
The problem lies in the door switch, where it senses whether a door is closed or open, just like the one in the fridge door... or the cable to this door switch is loose... First thing you can try is to clean this switch yourself... you can easily find it on the door frame. Try finding it on the non-problematic door might be easier. If cleaning it doesn’t work, have someone check the switch cable - Mira Hariyono from Indonesia
Make sure all your drawers under your seats are closed properly, otherwise lights will remain on - Chris Viviers from South Africa

My S reg Renault Scenic lost power today. I left it for about ten minutes and tried to start it again. I had power for a few minutes then I noticed that the dash lights for the battery stayed on with also the abs lights and the airbags, then it lost all power again. Please could you tell me if it is because I need a new battery or whether it is a different problem all together?
Hello, we had this problem a few months ago. My Megane always ran smoothly with no indicator lights stayed on. But suddenly one morning I just couldn’t start the engine... Tried again a few minutes later and it also lost power again. First thing we tried was recharging the battery... and... the engine started and stayed on... So we recharge it for half an hour until I have time the next day to have it checked at the service center - Mira Hariyono from Indonesia

I tried to fill my water bottle up and water just poured out from under the wheel arch. Any ideas?
You are overfilling the washer. The filler neck has an interferance joint where it goes into the bottle and the water comes out of there when overfilled. Syphon some out and the problem will be solved - Ken Seguss from London

About a month ago this car failed to start; it was in my garage. The excellent folk that maintain it had no suggestion to make. I spent the weekend of poking around - during which I pushed the red reset button which seems to be part of a safety system, though it did not seem to need it, and made no difference anyway. After removing one of the coils for checking - it was ok - the car started and has run well ever since - until now, that is, when once again it is as dead as a dodo. Could anyone suggest what it might be please? Something seems to have cut off the fuel - a malfunctioning safety device? (EXP+AUTO)
