Renault Megane Hatch 1997

My Renault Megane Hatch keeps immobilising itself. It works fine for a few days and then when I drive it and stop it won`t start again. If I left it for around 15 minutes it used to start again but now it can be anything from 15 minutes to days. All of the lights light up on the dashboard. The horn, the window wipers, the lights etc all work so it`s not the battery. I bought a new battery just in case. Previously, when I was advised on other forums to try, I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and the car started again, but this no longer works. The key for the car does not have a battery in it and you don’t have a button to press on the car key to make it open or close. Also the immobiliser light flashes on the dashboard and goes off when you start the car. To take it to a Renault dealer to have it checked with a computer is very expensive and if it`s the immobiliser I have been quoted a lot of money. Can anyone help me please? Thanks.

Hi. My Renault Megane Hatch`s driver`s side electric window won`t work. The other three work okay. It doesn`t make any noises or anything. Does anyone have any ideas? (priviledge)

Answers

Have the same problem, apparently a very common one! If you go to your Renault dealer there is 75% off repair for this - once you can provide a service history and the car is less than 7 yrs old. Mine is 3 mths outside that and got quoted for 500 euro - it can stay not working! Renault have recognised the problem, but no full recall so we’re stuck with shoddy electrics! Pam from England

I stopped my Renault Megane then found it would not turn over. All lights on dash come on but nothing happens. Could it be the isolator and, if so, how can I cure it? (Dynamique 16v)

Answers

Hi Roy, under the bonnet right handside (as you look at it) beside the battery, there is a fuse box. Lift the rear half up, this can be fairly tight but pull hard. There you will find some fuses, look in the fuse box cover you removed (check which way you hold it). One will stay start, in it is a 25 amp. The four speed heater fan has stopped working. I thought it would be a fuse, however, I’ve checked most of them one at a time, because the interior fuses have a diagram in the manual, which bears no resemblance to what is in the car, and the under bonnet one, has no diagram. Therefore I have no idea which fuse is for what. If someone can help, I’d appreciate it. (1.5 dci)

I have a 2004 Megane Scenic MPV which is very bold at times. Anyway, the main problem is the boot won’t open unless you manually open from the inside. I can hear the motor trying to work but with no response. I would be grateful if you could help me as this car has taken me to hell and back with the problems. (2004 1.6 Megane Secienc MPV)

Answers

I had a similar prob on my 2004 Renault Scenic. I had to remove the belly pan underneath then remove the wheel arches then remove the front bumper to get to the washer bottle which was located at the front of the engine in the corner which I couldn’t get to if I hadn’t taken these parts off. The pump has ceased. You need a pin to free the jet as its ceased. Be sure to locate the rear washer pipe - Larry Johnson from Yorkshire

I have a 1.9dci Megane. As much as I love my cars, I am none too pleased with this one for some reason and I am hoping someone can tell me. Whenever I start to set off from first gear, there is no power whatsoever then once the revs kick in, I am away with it. Any ideas? Also, when I bought the car it had all new disks and pads fitted. Whenever the car is moving slowly/crawling, I can hear a rubbing noise from the front wheel. Anyone had this before?

To be honest, I have a list of ongoing problems with this make of car, some of which I have been told are manufacturing faults (e.g. electric windows); I choose not to use them anymore cause they are so unreliable. Then there’s the dashboard coming up saying check injection. I had a diagnostics test done but it seems to have come back. My most recent problem has got everyone baffled, the lights just randomly came on and stayed on and the battery ran down so recharged battery everything seemed fine took it to work the next day but when it came to going home I couldn’t unlock the car, called the AA who tried starting the car but there was no battery power again. Decided to get new battery but you won’t believe it, the same thing happened. Does anyone know why this is happening? (1.9 DCI)

It has also been brought to my attention that even when the ignition is turned off and the car locked up and the imobiliser activated, the clock on the dashboard stays quite visibly light. The error message is "change oil soon". I have topped up but the message is still there and now I can smell burning at certain times. This error message came up on my old Megane and then the engine blew. What should I do?

Answers

This message means to change your engine oil as the car has a recommended mileage when to change engine oil. It explains on how to remove the message in your handbook using the trip reset button on speedometer on dash. Press trip button and hold it in for 10 seconds or so and 18,000 miles to next service will appear. Hope this helps - Ringo McJames from County Tyrone
