new style GS registered April 2009 no real issues except for usage on discs and pads - August had a starting problem AA called put booster on to start and told me there is something wrong with electrics. Took it to local Renault dealer in Milton Keynes who diagnosed "NEEDS NEW ENGINE HEAD GASKET GONE" £4300. I wanted a second opinion so went to collect - it would not start - dealer would not help so I had to get it recovered. The new garage local to me diagnosed all electrical no new engine needed no faults in the head gasket. What seems to have caused the issues is blocked side pods for windscreen water run off flooded interior under carpet corroded wiring. all now replaced but seem to need a new engine ecu so questions: What do I do about Renault dealer? - Renault UK not interested How do I get new ECU ? new they are £700 plus programming thanks for any answers

Answers

Hi Mike. I have just purchased a 2011 GS & noticed on the service sheet that the drain ducts had been cleared of leaves last winter. Perhaps I should lift my carpets etc & check for corrosion. I had a run in with the Renault dealer in Milton Keynes, who's name began with M,. When we went in 2 years ago to get a new card key (over £200) for our 2007 Megane & were told that we needed a new steering rack (£600+). we declined the offer & they told us that it would not pass an MOT. They then billed usr £50 for programming the card key & £45 for a pre MOT test, We were not aware of either of these jobs so I argued & threatened them with the RAC & local radio. They withdrew the charges & knocked 20 percent from the original estimate for the card key. The garrage is now under new ownership who's name begins with B. Ps. the car has passed 2 MOTs since then! Geoff Geoff from Buckinghamshire

I have run an assortment of Renaults for the last 30 years and pretty well all of them have been prone to the same fault - easily blocked drainage holes below the windscreen. Fortunately, it's never caused any damage other than a bit of wet carpet Richard Annerley from Gwynedd

The obd connector is located in the centre of the car underneath the front storage bin between the front seat, you slide the bin back and you should see see the connector or a lift up a flap. My integrated radio/nav-system (TomTom) spontaneously restarts for no apparent reason. It happens when • the radio is on/off, • the navigation is active/inactive, • the bluetooth is on/off, and • when playing a music CD and not. And any combination of the above. Usually, the radio/nav display switches to stand-by (showing the digital clock; white on black screen), then turns back to previous status. Sometimes it restarts the CD. When navigating, it continues on the previous route. Has anybody experienced anything like this? Any ideas why?

My handbrake will not engage, says off, handbrake fault. I have pulled the yellow lever and checked cables and they`re okay. I tried to reset by opening the car door, pressing lock with the door open and pressing start button for 5 seconds while at the same time pulling the handbrake lever out and pushing the red button in, but it just beeps and a message comes up handbrake fault [off] all the time. I`ve done this 5 or 6 times now but it will not reset? Any ideas? Thanks

I have a Renault Grand Scenic Dynamic 2011 I am having issues with the keycard, it will unlock all the doors sometimes but 5/10 times it will unlock the doors but not the drivers door. No matter how many times I relock and unlock them it won't unlock the drivers door and I have to climb in through the passenger door to open it. I have tried the spare keycard and have changed the batteries, with no success. It rarely does the auto opening to unlock the car but always does the auto lock when I walk away from the car. Any suggestions?

There seems to be either an electrical fault or battery fault on my car. The car starts first time, every time, no problem. However, the electric windows will only go down a tiny bit at a time and when the headlights are switched on, the dashboard (which always dims slightly) is dimming a lot and the Headlights themselves are not as bright. I have fully charged the battery but this has not made any difference. Has anybody had this problem or can anyone offer advice? The Renault garage charge £79-£99 to conduct a diagnostic check and I would rather avoid this is possible. It's probably going to cost loads to fix it anyway. Thanks

Answers

I can't help all your problems but the windows are an easy fix. It looks like your battery has been disconnected at some time. All you need to do is open the window fully (in small steps) once it's fully open hold the button pressed for 5 seconds. Then fully close the window (in small steps again) once it's fully closed hold the button for 5 seconds. The window should now operate correctly. Repeat process for remaking windows. While driving the steering lock came on and a visual warning came up on the dashboard "Steering Fault". I had to do an emergency stop, as I had no control of the steering at this time. I then turned off the car and back on again and the steering was working fine. Why did this happen? The car had a service last month.

Hi there. Can anyone perhaps help relieve some stress. We have a Renault Grand Scenic and couldn't get booked in this week for its 36,000 mile service. The service counter has now got to zero and the display days "service go to dealer" and the orange spanner is on. Now our dilemma is we are booked to drive on holiday tomorrow and it's around trip of 600 miles. Question is, can we go or should I hire a car or simply check oil and top up if necessary. Thank you in advance. Have a lovely weekend. Mark.

Answers

Assuming no other lights have come on, you'll be fine for the holiday. I just drove an extra 3,000 miles with the service light on. Nothing drastic will happen, just do your usual oil and water check and you'll be fine. Get it serviced when you come back. It's just a counter and a few extra hundred miles is nothing to worry about. Have a great holiday! Anna from South Lanarkshire

Warning - Renault Rear Windows went Haywire, they open and stay open when the lock car button pressed. This seems to be an electronic fault that just happens as they get old. BOth back windows will not lock or close, so my brilliant local mechanic has set them to stay locked and only work from the front door window buttons Beware if this happens as the ceramic window parts in the door can cost £500+ Hope this helps.

HOW do we switch this off the annoying beeping warning at 35 miles of petrol left in tank? PS - I've learnt how to change from MPH to KPH when driving in Europe, very good.

Answers

This is a very tricky problem. After many hours thinking about it I found a brilliant solution. Simple put some more petrol in the tank. It works like magic every time, the beeping will be gone. To prevent the beeping returning don't let the fuel tank level get so low again. An extra bonus is that you won't risk running out of petrol by driving around with a nearly empty fuel tank. No need to thank me, I'm very pleased to have been able to help. Smart Alec from Herefordshire

Hi my 2005 Grand Scenic had "electronic fault" on the dash while my wife was driving. A whole array of light came on the dash and power steering went and the handbrake didn't apply. I had a new fuse board fitted last December as the same thing happened just before Christmas. Does anyone have any ideas? or has it happened to you?

HI Simon there was a big recall a couple of years back on the Grand Scenics, as I have a 05 model too. Renault changed some sensors or similar. All the lights coming on could mean the circuit is just kaput I'm afraid. We used a local garage that specialised in renault as they plug it into the computers and analyse whats up. It shouldn't happen, but a renault dealer will see whats up, but it may be expensive. We once had a steering column go and it was under warranty thank god as my AA man explained it was a hefty expensive and 'rare' fault! email me if I can help anymore…but I recommend a good local cheaper mechanic who can do renaults… luckily I have two local to me. The owners handbook "vehicle settings customisation menu" one of the sections one can access on the dashboard display gives adjustments one can carry out - sound volume etc. I have no such message on my dash display and I now notice there are no small round sensors showing on the rear bumper/ Is my car the only Dynamique with no reversing aid! Hi I have recently purchased a second hand Renault Grand Scenic 06. Even though I just topped up with oil, as soon as the engine starts up it tells me to top up oil and the service light stays on. Someone told my wife to put 15W/40 into the car, but I found out 15w/30 is the correct oil. Could this be the problem?

Answers

Hi Peter, None of the two oils you mentioned are correct. you should be using 5W/30 or 5W/40 fully synthetic. 15W is for old style engines and will be too thick for the tolerances in yours. I would advise changing the oil and filter ASAP before you damage the engine. If you search online for a 'European car parts supplier' you can get the correct oil at a reasonable price. With luck your oil light might go out after this. Hope this helps Stephen Stephen from North Lanarkshire
