Hello! I have a Renault Megane Grand Scenic Oasis edition, it's a 2006 model. It's a complete electronic system with electronic display for mileage etc. Is it okay for the battery to be disconnected for 2 months at a time when I leave for university? Will it mess up the system? (I've already had the battery die because I hadn't disconnected it and the clock and all the info that's been on the car like average mpg has been reset I think)Many Thanks Hyun-ho Shin

Mark, Greater Manchester

A friend had a major problem last week. Her scenic (11 plate) had electronic handbrake failure, foot brake failure and the dash was showing airbag failure warning and all sorts of other warnings. She was stuck facing up a hill as the car was starting to slide down it backwards. She had spent 3 hour with her foot on the brake, but it was still sliding. The Police showed up and managed to chock the rear wheels to stop it sliding backwards further towards a T-Junction with a major road. It is now in a garage with them scratching their heads trying to figure it out. At the minute she can't work as she does security work and simply can't get to where the job may be.

My battery needs charging/replacing and I was going to do this at the weekend but I am a little scared of breaking something on the car given its reliance on electricity! Is the radio code the only thing that I need to worry about having so that I can reprogram it afterwards? I'm just paranoid of resetting something on the car that would need reprogramming like the immobilizer etc? If a battery was disconnected for a number of days, would this change things? Many thanks, Andrew.

Only used our two spare seats 4 times in 3 and 1/2 years of owning our grand Scenic and they worked just fine. We tried to use them in September but although the seats pop up fine the backs remain at a 45 degree angle identically on both sides! We have tried pulling the red straps hard and WD40 but to no avail. Our mechanic is currently as I write trying to work out how to fix them, so I will update with how to fix when and if he fixes them! It passed it's MOT this morning anyway, regardless of the seats. Janet from Somerset

Answers

The fault - seat backrest wouldn't come up straight. The pivot arm was rusted and seized up. To resolve this - slacken both T35 bolts on each side and the seat back will start to move. Lubricate (i.e. WD40) arm pivot and retighten T35 bolts. Result - seat backs up and ready to use. Thank you Eddy Muench, our marvellous mechanic! Janet from Somerset

Also, there is now a beep when i press 'open' on key fob and 2 beeps when i lock it.....never heard noises when i open/lock the car before.....hope someone can help without me spending a fortune at the Renault Dealer. thanks

Rear windows - when glass is full closed hold the two rear windows buttons up for 5-7 seconds and then release. then test windows on one touch. radio coda can be obtained only at a Renault dealer. shane'o from Norfolk

new style GS registered April 2009 no real issues except for usage on discs and pads - August had a starting problem AA called put booster on to start and told me there is something wrong with electrics. Took it to local Renault dealer in Milton Keynes who diagnosed "NEEDS NEW ENGINE HEAD GASKET GONE" £4300. I wanted a second opinion so went to collect - it would not start - dealer would not help so I had to get it recovered. The new garage local to me diagnosed all electrical no new engine needed no faults in the head gasket. What seems to have caused the issues is blocked side pods for windscreen water run off flooded interior under carpet corroded wiring. all now replaced but seem to need a new engine ecu so questions: What do I do about Renault dealer? - Renault UK not interested How do I get new ECU ? new they are £700 plus programming thanks for any answers

Answers

Hi Mike. I have just purchased a 2011 GS & noticed on the service sheet that the drain ducts had been cleared of leaves last winter. Perhaps I should lift my carpets etc & check for corrosion. I had a run in with the Renault dealer in Milton Keynes, who's name began with M,. When we went in 2 years ago to get a new card key (over £200) for our 2007 Megane & were told that we needed a new steering rack (£600+). we declined the offer & they told us that it would not pass an MOT. They then billed usr £50 for programming the card key & £45 for a pre MOT test, We were not aware of either of these jobs so I argued & threatened them with the RAC & local radio. They withdrew the charges & knocked 20 percent from the original estimate for the card key. The garrage is now under new ownership who's name begins with B. Ps. the car has passed 2 MOTs since then! Geoff Geoff from Buckinghamshire

I have run an assortment of Renaults for the last 30 years and pretty well all of them have been prone to the same fault - easily blocked drainage holes below the windscreen. Fortunately, it's never caused any damage other than a bit of wet carpet Richard Annerley from Gwynedd

My integrated radio/nav-system (TomTom) spontaneously restarts for no apparent reason. It happens when • the radio is on/off, • the navigation is active/inactive, • the bluetooth is on/off, and • when playing a music CD and not. And any combination of the above. Usually, the radio/nav display switches to stand-by (showing the digital clock; white on black screen), then turns back to previous status. Sometimes it restarts the CD. When navigating, it continues on the previous route. Has anybody experienced anything like this? Any ideas why?

I removed the radio and replaced it from there. Would not recommend though as it was really difficult, I dropped one bulb into back of consul trying. I hate to say it but I would get a garage to do it, removing the dash seems to be the only way. I believe Renault quoted about £135 James from Essex

My handbrake will not engage, says off, handbrake fault. I have pulled the yellow lever and checked cables and they`re okay. I tried to reset by opening the car door, pressing lock with the door open and pressing start button for 5 seconds while at the same time pulling the handbrake lever out and pushing the red button in, but it just beeps and a message comes up handbrake fault [off] all the time. I`ve done this 5 or 6 times now but it will not reset? Any ideas? Thanks

I have a Renault Grand Scenic Dynamic 2011 I am having issues with the keycard, it will unlock all the doors sometimes but 5/10 times it will unlock the doors but not the drivers door. No matter how many times I relock and unlock them it won't unlock the drivers door and I have to climb in through the passenger door to open it. I have tried the spare keycard and have changed the batteries, with no success. It rarely does the auto opening to unlock the car but always does the auto lock when I walk away from the car. Any suggestions?

There seems to be either an electrical fault or battery fault on my car. The car starts first time, every time, no problem. However, the electric windows will only go down a tiny bit at a time and when the headlights are switched on, the dashboard (which always dims slightly) is dimming a lot and the Headlights themselves are not as bright. I have fully charged the battery but this has not made any difference. Has anybody had this problem or can anyone offer advice? The Renault garage charge £79-£99 to conduct a diagnostic check and I would rather avoid this is possible. It's probably going to cost loads to fix it anyway. Thanks

Answers

I can't help all your problems but the windows are an easy fix. It looks like your battery has been disconnected at some time. All you need to do is open the window fully (in small steps) once it's fully open hold the button pressed for 5 seconds. Then fully close the window (in small steps again) once it's fully closed hold the button for 5 seconds. The window should now operate correctly. Repeat process for remaking windows. While driving the steering lock came on and a visual warning came up on the dashboard "Steering Fault". I had to do an emergency stop, as I had no control of the steering at this time. I then turned off the car and back on again and the steering was working fine. Why did this happen? The car had a service last month.

Hi there. Can anyone perhaps help relieve some stress. We have a Renault Grand Scenic and couldn't get booked in this week for its 36,000 mile service. The service counter has now got to zero and the display days "service go to dealer" and the orange spanner is on. Now our dilemma is we are booked to drive on holiday tomorrow and it's around trip of 600 miles. Question is, can we go or should I hire a car or simply check oil and top up if necessary. Thank you in advance. Have a lovely weekend. Mark.

Answers

Assuming no other lights have come on, you'll be fine for the holiday. I just drove an extra 3,000 miles with the service light on. Nothing drastic will happen, just do your usual oil and water check and you'll be fine. Get it serviced when you come back. It's just a counter and a few extra hundred miles is nothing to worry about. Have a great holiday! Anna from South Lanarkshire
