My Renault Espace has a fault saying "put card in" on the reader message on the dashboard. If you work the card in and out a number of times it will finally turn the ignition on, take the steering lock off and I can start the engine. Otherwise it will not start. Any ideas?

Today when I tried to put my keycard in the slot I had to really push it in for it to go. My Renault Espace then started okay, but when I switched it off some of the dashboard lights were still on as well as the radio. I waited to see if it would go off and it did and I heard it click off near the steering wheel. What could be causing this?

The keycard on my Renault Espace is really hard to push in. The car then starts, but when you switch it off all of the lights on the dashboard don’t go off and then you hear a loud click. Can anyone help?

Hi, I’ve got a Renault Espace Alize 2000. The engine is so noisy when revs are off then sometimes when revs are on it’s nice and quiet. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? Thanks.

Hi, I have a 2004 Renault Espace 1.9 diesel in good nick with 65k miles. Yesterday at constant speed of 65 mph a knocking sound developed which I immediately suspected was a big end which confirmed as likely by a nearby garage. I drove it very slowly home, the knocking has not got any louder and it still starts and runs fine. I would like to hope the engine is repairable. I paid £3k last summer for it and basically have 3 choices, sell it for spares or repair, get it repaired, or fix it myself. Trouble is I have no idea what a vehicle like this would be worth in this condition, no idea what it will cost to repair and although I’ve done a fair amount of engine work on old classics, I have no idea whether this can be repaired in situ or whether it’s an engine out job. If anyone could shed some light on my options I’d be extremely grateful. Many thanks, Anthony.

Hi my Espace 2.2 dci 2001 last night broke down. Smoke was coming from the engine compartment and it lost all power. On removing the air box smoke was coming out of one of the plastic connections with a wire going through, just in front of a glow plug. It appears the plastic connector has burnt away from the top. Can anyone recommend a solution and explain the problem? The car starts but runs as if it’s missing and smoke comes out of the hole. Thanks.

I have a 2.2 diesel Espace, and when its cold/damp it won’t start, however simple jump leads and a jump start get it going every time. I have replaced the battery twice now and have experienced the same problem each time. Does anyone know of a particular issue, such as a short circuit being created when its damp, that causes the battery to discharge and if so how to rectify it? Thanks.

Hi. Check your alternator and make sure that no loose wire or metal is touching the battery! - Jal from Lancashire
Hi, I had this problem with mine and had new glow plugs in. Now it starts first turn of the key every time. Just an idea - Helen Boot from Derbyshire
I have this same problem. Had it happening for years bought the car a year old and after 3 years, it started happening. Cold or wet, it is a lottery if it will start without jump leads. Most of the time after about 10 presses of the starter it will go. Dry days - no problem. Done all the usual, leads, earth straps etc. New battery and eventually a new alternator £700 so beware, it’s watercooled! If it can go wrong in a car it will with a mk4 Diesel Espace. I can’t get rid of it because I have spent too much keeping it going. 92,000 miles and had just about everything renewed. Never again - Ade North from Oxfordshire

Can someone tell me why I’m only getting 16 mpg? I have a 2litre 16v Renault Espace. Thank you.
Answers
I have a 2 litre turbo auto. Renault quote exaggerated figures. Look at the gov mpg on the road tax web site. It is given as 19-ish for cold urban. In winter, it gets worse. My vehicle had very low miles when I got it. The owner lived in inner London, so I guess he got your mpg. On motorways at constant 65mph I can get 32mpg. I had the car checked at a Renault dealer. No problem reported. They reset trip and drove it down a dual carriageway and returned the car with mpg figures of 26 mpg. Very expensive error. I stupidly forgot to research where the trip computer mpg figures were displayed when I test drove the car! - Keith Jefferson from Essex

The electronic brake motor on my 2-litre Renault Espace DCI works but is not engaging brakes. I can hear the electric motor turning. Warning lights appearing on the dash. Is it possible to replace the cables only? Hopefully I won’t have to replace the complete brake system. Any advice would be very welcome.

The digital speedo in my Renault Espace doesn’t work and we think it might just be the sensor. How do I find out what’s wrong with and how to fix it? Thank you.

Can anyone help? The washer wiper filler hose has come away from the main bottle. Is this a separate part as it appears to be separate but cannot work out how to re-fix it otherwise. Thanks.

Check the main fuse box in the engine bay. There should be a 40 to 50 amp fuse. If that is okay, then try disconnecting the battery and reconnect it - Adrian Black from England
