My Renault Clio Dynamique 1.2 on a 53 plate has developed a fault where the toxic fume indicator starts flashing and the engine goes into limp mode. It is also misfiring when not in limp mode (I`m not sure if it’s related). This fault only occurs when I’m down to a quarter of a tank of fuel and after driving down a hill. The manual states that if the toxic fume indicator is flashing then to stop and leave the engine running and it will go off, but unfortunately this isn’t the case with this car. I have previously encountered the fault that most Clios suffer with where the wiring loom rubs against the metal case, but this has been rectified. Any assistance would be appreciated. Does anyone have any suggestions please? Thank you. (Dynamique)

My Renault Clio 2005 model is giving me problems. I drove it to work nicely on Saturday morning and parked outside in Braamfontein where I work. When I knock off at about 1pm I could not start the car. The key will turn to a certain extent but does not turn enough for the engine to be switched on, it feels like there is something blocking it from fully turning clockwise. We tried kick-starting and jumpstarting, thinking that it might be a battery problem, but it seems like it’s not. Could it be that someone tried to steal it and then it locked? I am staying in Cosmo city and I had to call the towing services to get my car home. I need some advice. Please can anyone help and tell me what I should do?

I have a Renault Clio T reg 1998 which I got a month ago. I noticed since I topped up the oil that the car started running roughly and smoke comes out of the front of the car. I have also noticed a light comes on the dash which is yellow in colour with a wavy line going through it. I have taken it to two garages but they have not solved the issue. Does anyone know what could be causing these problems please? (RT)

Hi, I have a Renault Clio 1.2 Sport. It was losing coolant slowly so I took it to the garage and they said my plastic housing was cracked so I replaced it. It seems to have stopped my coolant leak but the temperature seems to go up quickly. It only goes to halfway, but I never travel far as I work locally and I only really use it for work. I can still smell the sweet smell. Could this still be coolant that smells from before? I had it mended and I’m not sure if the fan at the front of the bonnet is working. I can smell it more when my car`s heating is on. Can anyone help please?

Hi. I have just purchased an 04 reg 1.5 diesel Renault Clio. It drives fine but when I go on the motorway and pick up speed an orange light with a squiggly line comes on the dash for a few seconds. The last couple of times the red engine light came on for a few seconds and went off. Please can anyone tell me what could be causing this? Thanks.

I have just purchased a Renault Clio 1.2 petrol 02 plate. It has no history of a cam belt change and it has done 79,000 miles. Do these cars have a cam belt or chain? Thanks. (authentique)
Answers
Hi, they have a cam belt and I would say to get it done quite soon. I have had two Clio’s and my first one, Mk2, the cam belt went at 65K (very expensive) and on my second one, Mk2, it was done at 80k. Hope this helps! Matthew Jackson from Lincolnshire
If you have no history, get it changed now - better safe than sorry! The belt should be changed at 72,000 miles, or every 5 years, whichever comes first, so it should actually be on its third belt by now - John Greenslade from Powys

I filled up my diesel Renault Clio yesterday and the fuel gauge didn’t move when I filled it up. It has been two days and it still hasn’t moved. I then noticed that when the car is fully locked the petrol cap is not locking, no matter how I lock the car. I didn’t know if it was just a fuse blown or something more serious. My Renault Clio has been parked up for a couple of months through snow and cold weather and the battery has gone flat. I have used jump leads to start it but the engine and gear stick is shaking unless I rev it and it`s misfiring. Also when trying to pull away it just stalls, even at high revs. Any help would be much appreciated as I would like to get it on the road again asap. Any ideas please? Thanks.

I have the same problem, give it a week or so and the toxic fume light will stay on as well, the only clue I have found is that I have a faulty sensor although was not told which one or faulty coil, You could try disconnecting the battery completely for 10 minutes to reboot the computer. But it is most likely a faulty sensor and there are a lot of them. Good luck, if you find a solution I would love to know as I am still trying to fix mine - Steve from England

Any ideas how to solve the fact that my Renault Clio just doesn`t start sometimes? I bought the car last week and already it`s failed to start on 3 occasions. Today I called the garage I bought it from and they sent a recovery vehicle out. When the mechanic checked it worked fine and has started every time since. I have been advised to take it back on Saturday and they will do a diagnostics test, but reading above it seems that this could be a common fault. A week after buying the car outright in cash, do I have any rights to reject the car and demand my money back? Any help would be gratefully received. (Dynamique)

My Renault Clio`s throttle sensor light keeps coming on and the car goes into limp home mode. Diagnostics says it`s the throttle sensor but I had it replaced twice and still the same problem. The garage even changed a sensor under air intake but it still has the same problem. Over £300 spent and I still have the problem and the garage say they cannot do anymore. Can anyone help?

Basically had the same snag, it’s your wiring loom! At a certain point there is a large connector with a metal cover over it that chaffes through the loom and then ruins it giving tps/coil/throttle body faults! Get your garage to order a top loom and fit it but don’t refit the pointless cover! Try and get them to do you a deal on it as they have misdiagnosed your problem. New loom is about £167 from Renault - Nick from England
I have this same problem :( it’s a bloody nuisance when it happens. But as Nick said, it’s the wiring loom. I haven’t got round to replacing it yet, but taking the cover off helped a little and also sprayed WD40 on it as it seems to happen mostly when it’s wet weather (which is very helpful being that I am from rainy Scotland haha) ... Now that I know the price of a wiring loom may just have to be replaced, seems to be problem after problem .. now suffering a heating problem inside the car. Grrr - Michelle from Scotland
I had a similar problem and eventually found water in the ecu. So dried it out and presto, all ok again - Jackie Conboy from Ireland

I have an 02 Renault Clio and it kept slowing down, then the engine would just switch off. This happened slowly over 4 weeks until eventually I had to call the AA and get them to tow me. The mechanic replaced the crank sensor but still no joy. The cat was burning up so the lumbar sensor and cat were also replaced and the inlet valve cleaned. The loom is not chaffed at all, yet it is still cutting out and even the mechanic is baffled. Cost is now going into hundreds and I cannot afford to keep trying new parts as he is now saying the em light is coming on, as is the immobiliser, but his test says the immobiliser is fine, it`s something to do with the inlet. The throttle body has also been cleaned, (he tried to replace that too but I advised the AA had cleaned. Please can anyone help or offer any suggestions as to what it could be?

Hi, I have a 51 reg 1.2 Renault Clio and I am currently having trouble starting it. When I turn the key and wait for the immobiliser light to go off, it flashes on and off 3-4 times then will stay on continuously. It’s taking anywhere between 5 - 20 minutes of jiggling it about to get it going and the spare key was damaged when previously replacing a battery. Will I need to replace the key completely or is there an easier and cheaper fix? Thank you.
Answers
When you open your bonnet, look to the right, there is a fuse box behined the battery. Take lid off and in its wire spaghetti junction you will see 3 little black relays. Get some wd30 and spray all the wires and relays with it and try and start the car then. My Clio did the same and I did that and that cured it. Hope this helps - Graham Daniels from Cheshire

Hi. I have a Renault Clio 07 plate and my radio went off a few weeks ago and wouldn’t come back on. Then the car wouldn’t start so I bought a new battery. After the battery was fitted the radio asked for a code and worked fine until today. Now the radio won’t come on and I’ve noticed the click stays lit when the car`s locked up. I’ve googled this and it says it`s a fault and can be fixed free under yellow ots scheme and this is what is draining the battery. Does anyone know if Renault will still fix this fault free of charge? Thankyou.

Hi, I have a 1.2 2002 Renault Clio. When braking hard or when I am about to go over a bump, my wheels lock and my car skids - as if the brakes fail. I actually went into someone`s car the other day as the wheels continued to skid. I wasn’t going fast (luckily), about 10mph, but when I pressed the brake the wheels just locked and there was nothing I could do. It has happened quite a few times now. Hi. My Renault Clio overheated about 3 weeks ago, it didn`t seem to have much coolant and water in so I topped it up to full. It now is struggling to get to temperature. I put about 75% coolant in and the rest water. I know the weather is cold. I spoke to my dad and he said it could be the thermostat that`s not working? It seems to sit about 2 bars up, then if I`m going 70 mph then it will get up to about 4, then if I slow down again it comes down again. Any ideas please? Thank you for any help in advance.

My Renault Clio is losing water and I just cannot see any leaks so I am confused. Does anyone know where it could be losing the water from? Thank you. (1.5 dci)
Answers
Sounds like its got a blown head gasket mate, that or a warped head - George Brown (engineer) from Hampshire
Follow the top thick pipe from the radiator to the black plastic housing on the engine that black plastic housing has a smaller pipe also connected to it. That’s where your thermostat fits in; has three bolts that screws out with a 10mm socket you will see white scale seperating it from sealing properly, clean it and apply some red devil silicone or a good heat resistant silicone, not to thick and clean the other side on the engine part on the alliminium side and replace the housing with the three bolts and refit the pipes and add antifreeze and top up with water and walla then keep your eye on the water bottle you might need to top up water after a trip to town because of air locks in the system but then it should stay on the mark, good luck - Burt Vosloo from South Africa

My Renault Clio suffers with condensation during cold periods, which my other cars do not suffer from. Can anyone explain why and how I can overcome this problem? Thanks. (dynamique)
Answers
My wife’s car had a similar issue. It sounds as if you’re retaining water somewhere. I would check three places; 1. Check the drainage points under your door rubbers and give them a good blowout. 2. Check the recess in the bulk head. (Lift the plastic grate where the wipers are situated and clear any leaves/debris dust) 3. Check your sunroof for any leaks. (From past experience with Renaults, the silicon seals break down over time and the water gradually gets in.) There are guides on the net to show you how to fix a sunroof leak, and it’ll take you a couple of hours to screw/unscrew and re-silicon, but much cheaper than taking to a garage. Hope this helps! At a recent service I was told the ?? scottle pipes on my Renault Clio were partially blocked. The garage declined to show me where to find them or how to clear them "as it was dark". They charged £84 to do this - one hour’s work. I’ve asked around and discovered they lie beneath the mesh panel below the windscreen which is visible when the bonnet is lifted. Although there are what appears to be 2 screw heads, one at each end of this panel, my husband and strong son are unable to undo them. I would greatly appreciate tips on how to lift out the mesh panel, where to look for these drains and how to clear them, as I and any front seat passenger now find water dripping on our legs beneath the dashboard when it rains? I don’t want to spend loads on fixing it because I’m going to sell the car, but I’d really like some advice on what to try to repair it. Could anyone give me any idea what could be causing this?

The common problem with the Clio’s are the locking barrels on both drivers and passenger sides. It will need a new lock which for the price and the hassle, can be done at any garage. If you want one that’ll use your current key, you’ll need to go to your nearest Renault dealership - Nathan Ball from England

Hi. I changed the gearbox oil on my Renault Clio 1.2 16 valve, filled up till it started to come out of the filler hole and went for a test drive. I stopped the engine for about 10 minutes and when I started the engine a loud tapping noise was coming from the top of engine, which sounded like a diesel. I started to drive off and the noise stopped. I drove 300 meters, stopped the engine and it did it again then stopped, but when driving home the engine was running normally. It just seemed like a pinking noise now and again with no loss of power. The engine was ticking over normally with no smoke and the engine oil looks fine. The car drives okay, it just makes this noise and the water temperature is okay. Does anyone know what the problem is?

I’ve just driven into town and back in my Renault Clio. I noticed that when I go to slow down to wait in a line of traffic or stop, the stop warning light flashes along with the oil warning light. The oil level is fine. Could anyone tell me what this is please?

I don’t have the answer but am experiencing the same thing, although mine happens more when I go in to 3rd gear, round a corner or up and down a hill. Sometimes it’s the battery and stop lights, sometimes its the oil and stop lights. I am only able to check the oil using the computer in the car as I have no dipstick (1.2 01plate 16V Dynamique) and it’s half way according to the car, so the level is fine - Kirsty Stickland from England

Hi, just wondered if anyone could help me. I have just bought a 2003 Clio 1.2 and want to replace the car lighter. I don’t use it, just thought it would be best to replace it. You can get a universal lighter which has the positive and negative connection on the back with spade connectors, but my Clio has a terminal adapter which connected onto the original lighter. The thing is; there are 3 wires connected to the adapter a small black one with a red line a big yellow one with a red line and then a small baby blue wire. Which ones do I connect to the universal lighters positive and negative spade connectors?
Answers
Firstly, cut the block off from the three wires coming from the car. Place a female spade adaptor on the end of all three wires.(blue, black and red and yellow and red) With the black wire (with red stripe) coming from the car, place the black wire coming from the light bulb on the new universal lighter with it in the same side. Ignore the old lighter you took out and the new lighter has two spade terminals directly on the bottom. Join the positive wire from the car (yellow with red stripe), to the spade which is in the centre of the new lighter. The other spade is for the negative connection, so attach the connector which has those two black cables joined together to the spade connector on the lighter. You will be able to see the difference about the spades on the lighter. The positive connection on the lighter is always the one in the centre, and the negative is usually smaller and on the outside. (You will be able to see looking at it.) From there, just connect the positive wire from the lighter (red wire) to the blue wire coming from the car. Sometimes the lighter comes with a spade attached to the positive already. A spade connector is usually needed for the negative (black wire). (I would recommend fitting the lighter into the hole it goes into first before connecting the black wires into the same adaptor and connecting it up. All the best - Bob from Cambridgeshire

When my Renault Clio is turning I get a knocking sound. What could this be?
Answers
My last car did this. It wasn`t a Clio, it was a little Subaru, but I had been driving around with this knocking sound for a couple of months and when it went for it`s MOT at the end of July it failed. One of the reasons it failed was because the wish bone (as they call it) had broken and it was actually a very dangerous thing, which was causing all the clunky knocking sounds when turning. So my advice would be go to your garage and get it looked at! - Ruth from England
Check the cv joint - Terry Chapman from Lanarkshire

Hi, just recently my Renault Clio has been having problems. It starts fine but after that, the engine seems to slowly die (revs go down) and accelerator does nothing but suddenly it kicks back to life and the accelerator works again. This repeats several times and happens after I drive a few hundred yards or if the car is still. After about 1 minute of driving it’s fine and the problem goes away. I had this problem last year and it seemed to be solved by fitting all new spark plugs but it’s back. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Ingrid. (Expression)

Answers
Hi Rhona, try looking around the seals on your windscreen and other windows to see if any are loose or hanging off a little. This causes dampness to enter in and cling to the windscreen. On frosty nights, the dampness freezes, also check the doors to make sure seals are okay round the windows. You will have to look very carefully, the smallest gap can cause dampness. I am thinking of buying a 2000 plate Renault Clio but the air bag light stays on. Does this affect the next MOT and can it be repaired cheaply?
Answers
Hi Annette, I had the same problem with my Clio and was told by auto electrition to look under drivers seat for connector, disconnect then reconnect and the light should go out, well it did on mine. The cause is the seat being moved forward or back tentioning the wire. Hope it works - Peter Heinz from Cardiff
Yep, could be right but why not get a diagnostic before you buy? The airbag light comes on if you have a fault on either airbags or the seatbelt tensors. Often the slip ring in the steering wheel fails which can cause this. As mentioned, unplug the seatbelt tensor connectors under the two front seats and replug them. If this doesn’t work then it’s gonna be more expensive. This is an MOT fail if the light is on - Paul from Spain

Hi. I have just brought a Renault Clio and it’s got a small leak in the corner. I am not sure if it from the door or the sunroof. Any ideas and is this a common problem?

It may not be the glass part (seal) on the sunroof. It could be the seal that the whole sunroof sits into the roof (the black rim), aquarium silicon + silicon gun (about £10). Cut the end off the silicon then pump as much silicon right into round the seal - quite messy and tricky but clean with wet damp cloth with ringer round the rim - hope this helps as I had the same problem - Ian Kerr from Mid-Lothian (Edinburghshire)

My Renault Clio shudders when in 1st and 2nd gear only. Why might this be?
Answers
Hi, it may be your engine mount rubber is weak. Open the bonnet and try to move the engine at the top from front to back, it should move a little but be quite stiff. If it wobbles easily like a jelly, replace the mount as when starting in first and second gear as clutch engages the engine, it moves in the mounts and gives a jerking feel if the engine is too loose - Ayron Kitteringham from England

I’m very confused as I have no fog lights, also I have a 1.2-litre Grande Clio S reg and my petrol goes really quickly. I went 7 miles and it used a quarter of a tank. When driving my Renault Clio, I stopped to turn right but my car struggled to move. I managed to get round the corner and the ABS light came on and I could not move the car at all. After several attempts I managed to get my car home. My husband then took the car out and nothing was wrong. The day after I drove the car to work and it felt like the car was being pulled back and it was making a really loud popping noise and I was struggling to pick up speed. When I eventually got to my destination I struggled to pull the handbrake up. Any suggestions what could be wrong?
Answers
There could be a few faults. 1) your brakes may be seized on, 2) you might have ran out of brake fluid, 3) the brakes may have rusted and stuck, 4) the abs could be stuck on, 5) the handbrake may be stuck on as it uses a separate barrel than the foot brake. Hope this helps - Scott from Lanarkshire

Hi, it’s five years or I think 72,000 mls whichever comes first, and if yours is a 2004 it’s well overdue, or it has been done by a previous owner, check your service book or any receipts you may have. If there is no evidence of it being done in your service book, try calling the garages that have done work on the car, they are usually pretty good if you give them the reg. failing that some garages put a sticker somewhere under the bonnet indicating that it has been done or others mark with a black felt pen with the date it was done, I’d have a good look first as you can save yourself a small fortune if you find evidence of it being done, I hope this is of some help to you. When I’m driving my Renault Clio the lights start flashing and my indicators and wipers stop working. Also, it can happen anytime. There is a clicking noise when the problem happens. An auto electrician has looked at the ECU and found no fault - it is really dangerous when this happens, both to myself and other road users as my car has auto lights on it. (1.5 dci billabong)
Answers
My husband had exactly the same got an Auto Electrician to check any loose wires (earth etc), but he could not find anything wrong. After much research online, we decided to get the UCH replaced. It cost £400 total and it has worked! No problems since. As you say, it’s very dangerous, the Renault garage wanted to do a diagnostic test, but last time we had one of those done, they could not find anything wrong and I didn’t want to pay out £83 for them to say they can’t find anything wrong again. That’s the problem when it’s intermittent, so we decided to go ahead and have the unit fitted. I would almost guarantee it will work for you, we also have a 03 Clio. Linda, I had this on my Vauxhall Corsa. A different car but the solution may be the same. Under the doors are something called cills, and on the bottom of these are plastic plugs (with a small hole in for drainage) from which water is supposed to escape. These plugs had clogged up, so I removed one and about 2 pints of water ran out and that was the problem for me. You have to look under the car where the doors are placed and hopefully these plugs will be obvious. I was a little hesitant about pulling them out but they were easy to replace and the water drained out of the car before it could cause a more severe issue. On the Corsa it is designed that the water from the roof runs down into these cills before draining out. Fingers crossed that this is the solution to your problem as it is simple and doesn’t cost a penny - Lee from Bury

Well it could be a number of things mate from a leak in the radiator or one of the related pipes right through to it being the head gasket. Have you noticed any white smoke coming out of the exhaust? Your water can evaporate as steam through the exhaust the head gasket being the main suspect of that symptom or if you can see any water underneath when parked up, it could be a leak in the pipes or radiator.
