Hi. I have a Renault Clio extreme 1.2 16v. When I get in my car and start up my headlights flash like crazy and the clock stops, lights go off, I can`t wind down my windows or lock my doors and the hazzards don`t work. When it`s doing it I can hear a clicking noise from my relay box on the passenger side under the dash. What could it be? Plus my gear earth cable is snapped. Could it have something to do with that? Thank you.

The fuse for the rear lights and rear number plate lights on my Renault Clio blows for no apparent reason. Changing the fuse solves the problem but it blows again sometimes after a few hours and other times it will last for days. There appears to be no logic as to why and a automobile electrical shop have not been able to solve the problem. Any ideas please?

Hi. I have a 2003 Renault Clio 1, 2 16v. Yesterday I tried to get rid of the oil that accumulates in the intake manifold and air filter box using a hand pump which I normally use to suck oil from the dipstick pipe, so as not to remove the drain plug when doing an oil change. I moved the pipe deep inside the intake manifold to make sure I suck as much oil as possible. This morning I tried starting the car but it`s not revving, no matter how much I press the accelerator pedal and it`s also smoking. Could I have knocked something inside the inlet manifold or what? I disconnected the battery and fitted it back again and the car was now cutting out each time I tried to press the accelerator pedal. What could be going on here?

I have a Renault Clio. Why, when I start the engine, does the engine related fuse box make a crackling sound for about 3 minutes and then it is allright? This box is located against the n/s wing near the battery. (1.6 petrol)

I put a secondhand cat on my Renault Clio. Now it`s running roughly, black smoke`s coming out of the exhaust and it won`t take throttle, plus the engine management light is on. What should I do?

When I park and lock my Renault Clio, after a while the headlights come on and the engine cooling fan comes on and if I don’t disconnect the battery of a night the battery will be flat. Has anyone had this problem? (initiale)

I have a 2002 Renault Clio 1.2 16 valve dynamique with 30,000 miles. When slowing down at roundabouts if I slip into neutral gear there is a revolving noise which slows down as the car is slowing down. This also happens when moving through neutral when changing gear. This problem only occurs when the car has warmed up and the noise does not occur when the car is cold. The car has passed it`s MOT and apart from this problem the car is running perfectly. While slowing down at lights or roundabouts and slipping into neutral gear could this damage the car?
Sounds like a noisy thrust bearing to me, that.s if it is mainly when you dip your clutch. - Paul from England

It takes six / seven ignition to start my Renault Clio. Could it be the fuel injectors? If it is an expensive job can you guide me how to solve it and save money?

When I get to 40 mph the stop warning light comes on and my Renault Clio starts shuddering before cutting out. It has happened quite a few times. I was told it needed servicing but that hasn’t solved the problem. Any suggestions?

Hi all. I have a Renault Clio 1.6 automatic and am having a lot of trouble with it. Last week it wouldn’t start the first time. After locking and unlocking it several times and trying the keys in and out it would eventually start on roughly the fifth attempt. That seemed to rectify itself and stopped happening and I put it down to my key battery possibly needing changing and got on with it. Now today it`s not going into automatic as it should do when starting. No matter how many times I have tried and operate the selector lever it`s just not going into auto. It will drive in manual however and the preheating/electronic fault or water in the fuel tank warning light is on. In the past when I have driven it in manual that warning light was there, however it was never there when I drove it in auto, which is why I always chose to do that. Now it`s not giving me that option, which I assume is due to the fault which I ignored. Can anyone shed any light on what is going on with my car? (Automatic)

When I am driving my Renault Clio and I press my brakes sometimes they make a loudish noise and my right indicator doesn`t flash it just glows. Then when I want to use my right indicator it won`t work it just glows like when I press my brake. I know it must not be working because someone peeped me. When I was stuck in traffic the other day it was doing it and my light for electric fault came on, but only for a few seconds and then it went off and it`s never come on again since. I have still got the brake and indicator problem though. Also after 5 minutes of starting it smells a bit like burning but then this goes and my temperature gauge reads okay. I`d be grateful for some help please?

I recently bought a second hand Renault Clio 1.2 Authentique 2001. Everything seems to work fine except the fuel gauge needle. It doesn’t matter how much fuel I add the needle won’t move. Any suggestions?
It’s either the fuel gauge faulty or the sensor in the fuel tank has gone bad - Kay Khan from England

I have a Renault Clio that is showing a hazard warning I don’t understand and I do not have a manual. It shows a picture of a car, with several dots, before showing what looks like a box cut in half with the sides going out very slightly to the sides and a little ball or flame above. Sorry it’s so difficult to explain. Can anyone please explain what it is?

I took a happy Renault Clio for a full service. Within 10 miles following this oil was bubbling from the coolant tank. This happened within spitting distance from a garage (friend’s garage in Ivybridge, Devon) and I took her straight there. They then replaced the oil cooler sandwich plate, flushed the system through and cleaned up the engine. One week later they flushed the system again and changed the alternator which they said had gone faulty. The car was fine then but would not start on first turn of the key, it always started second time. I took the car back 4 days later and they diagnosed a cracked cylinder head gasket as the reason for the car not starting. My car has never overheated and there is no oil in the coolant. Am I being taken for a ride? (1.5 diesel)

My Renault Clio`s steering started off making a screeching noise when I turned. Now the steering light is on and steering is very heavy. After about 20 minutes or if the weather is really hot the light will go off and steering will go back to normal, but still screeching when turning the wheel. What is the problem and is it expensive to fix?

Can you remove a Renault Clio`s engine from the top but leave the gearbox in?
My suggestion would be to drain all the oil and remove the drive shafts then remove both the engine and box; it would be much easier to seperate than leave in situ as you might damaged the clutch kit. - Sara Lobb from Cornwall

My daughter`s Renault Clio has an erratic speedometer. It`s okay to about 40 mph but above this the needle waivers up and down. There is also noise from the transmission which increases at higher speeds. I have been told this could be due to the diff bearings and the cost would not be worth doing on this age of car. Any ideas please on cost of replacing bearings or fitting a recon box or other possible cause of the speedo problem? (1.2 Litre 5 door)

My Renault Clio has a series of electrical problems - courtesy light not coming on when the door`s opened; auto headlights not going off when the door`s opened; electric wing mirrors and front windows u/s; outside temp not showing. My mechanic discovered that most of the wires going into the door through the rubber sleeve were sheared. I can’t see why these wires should have been cut through. Has anyone got any ideas as I would like to stop it happening again? (III. Tomtom Live)

As in the Screen Washer? If so, it’ll be your water pump that needs replacing. My Clio has the same, it’s not too pricey - Alex Smallwood from England

My Renault Clio has a warning light on the dash telling me there is water in the diesel or fuel. When the car is driven it loses power and if you stop and start a little while later the light goes out and it will run for a few days then repeat the fault. Is it to do with the fuel system, or has anyone had the same problem and found it`s not the fuel? The light is placed centre of the light cluster. (petrol dynamique)

Can you tell me what one of the images means on the dashboard of my Renault Clio? It isn’t flashing, it isn’t faulty, but it’s going down everytime I use it. It is a vertical line with 3 smaller lines towards the top (like in a a ’t’). Then it has horizontal wavy lines, like liquid on the bottom of it all. It also has a pointer and clock and the dial is showing to be going down, so I obviously need to do something, or top something up? Thanks.

Hi. I have a Renault Clio on a 2002 plate. I was wondering can I fit a 2005 Renault Clio engine which is the same shape as mine in my Clio? The engine is different but both engines are 1.2. Is this possible? The reason I want to do this is because my engine on my 2002 is blown and my friend has a 2005 engine and I can have that for free, but I would need to get it fitted. I don’t want to pay for it to get it fitted if it’s not going to start or give other problems. Please can anybody help?
I wouldn’t go there if I was you. This is incredibly risky and say you didn’t connect one pipe up correctly or missed a cable then you’re going to have serious problems - Alex Smallwood from England

Hi, I have just bought a 2010 Renault Clio and the passenger dim bulb wasn’t working. I have changed the bulb but it is still not working and the fuses seem to be fine. Can anybody please help me out?

I had my Renault Clio in a wee local garage for repair recently. I went to pick it up and on driving away I discovered that the emissions warning light stays on. I drove round the corner and back to my guy’s garage. (Repair was to the bonnet so I can see no connection to this sudden fault). There seem to be so many reasons for this light staying on! Any ideas on how/where to start? Needless to say, budget is tight. (Am starting to hate my wee Clio!) Any tips will be much appreciated. In very simple plain English please - I know next to nothing. Many thanks.

Hi, I have lost all drive in my Renault Clio`s gearbox. I think my thrust bearing was it`s on way out as I had a squeak only when I pull off. My clutch may have been on it`s way out because it was biting high but was getting me about. I pulled off and went to change to second and it revved like it wasn’t in gear but it was in second. I tried another gear and the same thing, it didn’t crunch at all when I put it in gear it just had no drive. I hope someone can give me some good news as I haven’t got a clue what’s happened?

Hi, I have a 2003 Renault Clio which has around 60,000 miles on the clock and has developed a few problems lately. The oil light came on a while back and I had the oil and filter changed but the light is still on. It doesn`t seem to be causing any problems so I have let it lie for the time being and it has been on constantly for around two months. Another fault has started occuring where sometimes the car won`t start. You turn the key and the car tries to start but doesnt catch. Sometimes the car starts first time but other times it can take three or four goes or not at all. Also the speedometer has started working intermittently, sometimes it goes off for a period of time and then comes back on. This usually happens when I go over a bump or pull off quickly. Can anybody help with any of the issues or should I take the car to a garage and let them sort out the problems?

My daughter bought a new Renault Clio almost 2 years ago and within the first week it developed a fault - it intermittently won’t start. The dealership have run diagnostic tests several times and, despite their technician witnessing the non starter for himself, say they can’t find any fault. Their latest advice was to turn the ignition key, keep it held for 4 seconds and apparently it should work with no problem. Needless to say it didn’t and the car is still intermittently not starting. Any advice would be gratefully welcomed. Any suggestions please?
You should not have a problem. The car is still under warranty they have to sort the problem out or go to Renault head office. - Peter Cox from Dorset

Why do my Renault Clio`s oil and stop lights come on after I’ve topped up my oil? I use the correct oil and have double checked the amount and it is right, but my stop light and oil light come on every 5 or 10 minutes while I’m driving the car?

Hi, I bought a Renault Clio 1.2 last July, it had 84,000 miles on the clock. I had it serviced in October 2012 and it has just had an MOT in July 2013 and passed that, but there is an extremely loud vibrating noise that occurs when I`m speeding up or slowing down. You have to have the radio on or a conversation at an extremely loud level when it`s doing this. Driving on a motorway is a nightmare because it`s so loud. It does this on a daily basis and any advice would be much appreciated. Any suggestions please?
I had a similar problem when speeding up and would get a really loud noise constantly. Mine was a knackered wheel bearing and this can normally occur around the 80,000 mile mark. They’re pretty cheap to buy and it doesn’t take long to change. If it’s a wheel bearing it’s nothing to worry about, the sound will just keep getting louder and louder. - Alex Smallwood from England
I had the same problem, where my Renault Scenic sounded like a diesel vehicle. It was the Dephaser Pulley that had to be replaced. - Belinda W from South Africa
