My Peugeot Partner van won’t start off the key. It will if I bump it but it cuts out as soon as I let my foot off the gas. I glued the key together because it was broken and I also put diesel in it which I got from someone cheap. It was normal diesel not red. I`ve changed the fuel filter but still no joy. Can anyone help me please?

My Peugeot Partner van won’t start up properly. It takes like 20 attempts when it’s cold and it won’t bump start either. The battery, alternator, starter motor, glow plugs are fine. There’s power going to the glow plugs - I had it tested and they’re new glow plugs. Any ideas on the problem? I must confess it was low on oil so I topped it up. I’m getting a compression test done but can’t fit it in for over a week. So it maybe the pistons are pooped but any other ideas? Thanks.

Answers

Hi, it sounds like mine it was the fuel injection pump (seal faulty). The pump was letting the fuel return back to the tank. At first, I also thought it was the battery/injectors so changed these, but still had same fault. So it had to be a fuel problem under the bonnet was a priming pump. I pumped this for about a minute and a half, then turned it over and it started, I still have the same problem but now I park with the front of the van aiming down. This stops the fuel returning. A second hand one is going to cost me £200. You can get a seal kit but you have to be in a very clean environment (white suits). Hope this helps - Robert While from Shropshire

Robert, sorry late reply, funny that I just saw your answer now and just had a call. My vans fixed, I went scrappy yesterday and bought the priming pump and he fitted this morning, it’s working. It wasn’t on my van as it was empty so it had an airlock in it. I paid £10 for the one from scrappy, you can get them off 206 or 306 or partner van if its a 2000 model. I’ve had hell with my van during the past few months spending money on parts to fix it and it wasn’t the glow plugs or starter motor. I thought it could be the pump in the tank. I took a tank off and no pump in there so mine hasn’t got one in there, so go scrappy and buy one like I say I paid £10 for priming pump. I have changed the diesel filter on the van but have got air trapped in the system. How do I bleed the air out?

Answers

Bit late to be answering this one, but it might help someone else. On diesel partners of this age, they’ve usually got a priming pump that can be operated by hand. It’s a black push button located just to the left of the diesel filter as you face the vehicle. Pump it several times until it starts to feel ’firmer’, turn the engine over and see if it starts, if it doesn’t repeat procedure - Kieren from Gloucestershire

Hi, I have a knocking from my front nearside wheel when turning left only. I have been told that this may be a wheel bearing but I’m sure it isn’t and is actually a drive shaft. Is there anyway that this can be confirmed?

Answers

Jack it up on the nearside, take the wheel off, rotate the disc/drive shaft slowly and see if the gearbox gets pushed away/towards you as the shaft goes round. Knackered cv joint on the shaft if it does. Whilst you’ve got it jacked, see if there’s any noise/play from the wheel bearing as you rotate the wheel. Partners go through link rods like they’re going out of fashion too, they can give you a clunking noise. While you’ve got the wheel off, you should be able to track down the problem - Kieren from Gloucestershire

Hello, my third-hand-van has come up with yellow fault symbol which has a rectangle symbol with key in it. Can anyone help me identify this symbol? My log book etc doesn’t have it in - thank you in advance for any help.

Answers

Sounds like immobiliser fault. Chip in the key gets read by sensor around ignition switch, ECU checks codes match. Could be the key, could be the other components - Kieren from Gloucestershire

I have a Peugot Partner van and, the other day, a key symbol came up on the dash, then a beep and the engine cut out. Now it won’t start and the symbol comes up every time. Does anyone know what this symbol means?

Hi, I have a Partner 600 LX 1.9 2002 model. When I turn full lock on to the left I hear a loud banging, creaking noise. I’ve been told its the cv joint which sounds right but then, when I ring for parts, they’re saying I cannot change it and that I have to change the full drivetrain. I would like to know if i can just change the cv joint solely? Many thanks!

Answers

You just change the whole drive shaft, it’s fairly simple for a competent DIY’er. My wife’s 307 snapped 2 hours before we were due to drive to the airport for our hols but I bought one and fitted it in an hour, cheap to buy on ebay - John Hargreaves from Lancashire
