The controls on the driver`s side of my Peugeot 307 are not operational. My window does not close. Under normal conditions the side mirrors close when the car is locked and reopen when the car is opened, but the side mirror on the driver`s side does not work. All of the other windows work with the control on each respective door eg. the left window works with the control on the left door. Can anyone suggest what could be causing this please?

Hi. I have just had the teeth in my Peugeot 307`s gearbox fitted because it just wouldn’t go into third gear. The teeth were secondhand, the mechanic had a Peugot gearbox and used those. I think that I have been really overpriced at £450. Does anyone have an idea of what the cost should be? Thanks.

Answers

Hi Kate, I had a very similar problem with my Peugeot 307. It would not go into/above third gear. It was actually a problem with the solenoids (they are what change the gears), and I had to replace both of them. Each solenoid was $250 in NZ money, which should be way less in pounds. Also, considering that you are in Europe, and that the parts were second hand, you were really ripped off. For second hand parts, 450 pounds is way too much - Ashleigh Neame from New Zealand

I changed a battery in my car and now it would not start. What could cause that and how to fix it?

Answers

Remember the 3 min rule when disconnecting the battery. There is a process that you have to follow when disconnecting and reconnecting a battery as your BSI unit is required to go into sleep mode. 1. Ensure drivers window is down before disconnecting battery, ensure that all electrics are switched of such as lights interior lights wipers etc and that all doors are closed. (ensure that drivers window remains down) 2. Wait 3 minutes before disconnecting battery this shall ensure the BSI unit goes into sleep mode. 3. Disconnect the battery 4. Wait 15 seconds and then you may reconnect the battery 5. Wait 10 seconds and then turn side lights on through the drivers window you may hear a bong. 7. Turn ignition on and start the vehicle. 8. Remove key from the ignition and complete central locking via remote key approx 3-5 times. 9. You may now enter the vehicle as normal and operate electrics as normal and operate window to closed position. 10. If this fails then you have lost the codes on your BSI and shall have to take this to your local dealer to get recoded - Richard Rice from County Down

A 20A fuse has been blowing on my Peugeot 307 whenever the engine`s hot and I try to start the car. I had it MOT’d last week and they couldn’t see any problems with the wiring, but said it might be a problem with the starter motor. My car wouldn`t start this morning and all of the warning lights have come on with a continuous beeping and a clicking sound when I turn the key. Does this sound like the starter motor`s gone? If so how much will it be to fix?

All, I recently purchased a second hand 307 from a dealer and think there may be an issue with the radiator, but not sure. My temperature gauge is constantly on the move, fluctuating from 75 deg to 95 deg then down again to 75. Only when the fan kicks in does the temperature drop and then it repeats through the cycle again. Is this normal? Surprise surprise, the dealer informs me this is normal! I thought the fan should only kick in when the engine is warm when idling in traffic with no air flow through it? I only have a 3 month warranty, so am keen to get this sorted before the warmer weather. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (1.6i Quicksilver)

I have a hissing noise when I rev up my Peugeot 307. Also, after you rev it, it like pops and misses like a backfire back through the exhaust but it drives great once its warm. It also wont idle when cold but starts fine then 30 seconds later idle drops. Has anyone else experienced this? (2.0 16v XSI)

Answers

Does the sound change when the brake pedal is depressed? Sounds like a brake servo leak which would explain the hissing and the misfire as it will affect the fuelling ratio - Horatio McBlythe from Derbyshire

Sounds like a leak from the inlet manifold, the hissing noise is the manifold loosing vacuum, also look for split hoses - Jock Jock from East Lothian (Haddingtonshire)

Peugeot 307 2004

I bought a 54 plate Peugeot 307 just before Christmas, drove it around for a few days, then left it outside my house on Xmas Day and Boxing Day - went to start it the following day and the battery was dead. Charged it up overnight and it started again, but took it back to the garage to be checked, it was a brand new battery and apparently they couldn’t find any problems with it. Lo and behold, a week later it happened again. The garage have taken it back in but are taking their time to find a problem. They tell me they have checked the alternator etc and everything is fine. Today I called for an update and they think it could be a fault with the factory fitted stereo. They are saying they think it turns itself on at random times and is draining the battery. I can’t see anything about this on-line and not sure what to believe anymore. They are being decent and lending me a car in the process but I just want my car back hassle free! Any thoughts on this?

Answers

You have a poss drain on the battery and yes, aftermarket stereos can be a problem as your 307 has multiplexing architecture for the electrics and would not recommend having aftermarket stereos - Ben Holden from England

Thanks Ben. Apparently, there isn’t a drain on the battery. After posting this question, I did find a couple of other forums where people had a similar problem with 2004 model Peugeots. Still bizarre all the same! If this is the problem and the stereo is turning itself on for hours and running the battery down, I’m still concerned about the alternative stereo as you mention but not sure what the answer is? - J S from England

Peugeot 307 2006

Hi, my Peugeot 307 hdi has been off the road for 3 months due to no fault of its own, only personal reasons, so I decided to re-tax it and use it again. It started up fine 1st time so I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks. Then I went to go to work and the battery wouldn’t turn over and the dash beeped at me a couple of times. So I tried again and it did the same thing. So anyway, for a while battery spent has been flashing up when I start the car but I know that’s the key battery low. So anyway, when I started to use my car again a couple of weeks ago I noticed a light in the shape of a triangle would come on as I started the car and then go off. This triangle is orange with an exclamation mark inside it. So I tried my spare key to see if it would start... No good! Also, if it would lock... No good! Do you think it’s a new battery I need?

Hi what it is. I get an anti-pollution fault, airbag fault light. The interior lights flicker slightly, the rev counter drops randomly (0-1000 rpm) at slow speeds, approximately 30 mph, juddering like it’s missing but it’s fine at higher speeds. That’s about it. I just wondered if you have any ideas? Any help would be most appreciated. (1.4 16V PETROL)

Answers

I had the very same problem just before Christmas, this is how I fixed it and it’s worked fine ever since. I filled the car up with 50 lts of diesel then got a redex diesel cleaner (Asda £2) tipped it into the tank of diesel and then went on a drive. You want a 10 mile straight road, get your car into 3rd gear doing 70mph and just drive for 10 miles. It sounds like you will be thrashing it but it cleans all the dust out of your cat and you will feel the power coming back. Good luck - Richard Adams from Staffordshire

I have a 307 diesel that will not start but turns over. Dealer has said it requires starter motor. Dash now showing Economical Mode and nothing electrical will work. The dealer has left the drivers electric window open... How do I close it now? Called dealer he said disconnect battery that should clear the mode, if not tow it to get the wheels moving. Tried both nothing works. Can anyone suggest anything else?

I have been advised to get tyres fitted on rims (to ease change over in the Summer) and there are lots on offer which correspond to the car details. Is there a particular size I should get ? The car details tell me I need 195/65 R15 but is there any other detail I need to check before buying? I want to ensure I buy the right thing first time!

My 307 displays "anti pollution" and switches off the engine as soon as I clock 130km/hr. What could be the problem?

Answers

I had the anti-pollution fault on my 2003 307 2.0 hdi 110. It kept coming and going, usually came on when I reached 50mph, had the error along with "unblock diesel filter" for a couple of years (I don’t do many miles). Eventually the car would not accelerate properly or go over 50mph, I did some research and traced the fault to the DPF "diesel particulate filter" and the fuel additive tank was empty. Had to get my local garage to fill the additive tank, they also had to reset the ECU. The DPF is a bit like a cat, the fuel additive allows the DPF to get really hot and burn off the soot that accumulates in it. The fuel additive is controlled by the ECU and should last 80,000 miles, however each time you open the fuel cap the ecu thinks you have filled the tank so it injects the additive into the tank, so if like me you only put £20 in at a time, you soon run the additive tank dry. This causes the DPF to gradually get blocked then you get the "Anti-pollution" error and eventually if you don’t fix it, the engine could pack up all together. A DPF from Peugeot (they only supply reconditioned ones) cost me nearly £400, the fuel additive is about £30 a litre and you need about 3 litres. Since I had my car done, I found DPFs on Ebay for £150-ish. Sounds a lot to repair but much cheaper than a new engine. Car drives great now better than it has been for a long time and best of all, no error messages. Hope the info is of some use - Phil from Norfolk

My peugeot 307 will not rev over 3000, there is smoke and a lack of power. I’ve been told it’s the tubo by one person and will cost £400. Someone else said that because it’s only done 40,000 miles it’s probably not that and they had been done by a mechanic saying it was their turbo, they paid and later found out the turbo had not been changed, just a minor pipe. Is there another explanation for these symptoms? Many thanks!

Answers

Update: the shaft in the turbo is broke! I can hold the little nut on exhaust when started. would this prevent it from running at idle, surely air doesnt need to be forced in at idle?? on advice from main dealer they said replace turbo and oil supply pipe, remove sump and clean out, clean strainer in sump and new oil and filter etc.....But!! possible it could happen again!! peugeot wont cover warranty less the service history is good.....well its not great not my fault...previous owner!!! they said it happened them before, other advice from same dealer was a second hand engine with low mileage... now confused?? Not so good news... If the shaft has excess play then the turbo is blown, the engine should still run even with the turbo blown... It should bring up some fault when its cutting out. Seen a 307 1.6hdi a few weeks ago with a blown turbo and it was driving poorly (no power) and again no fault codes were logged.... If the intake butterfly valve was stuck closed then this would restrict the air intake to engine....you really would need to graph live data when its running for the short time and see whats happening. If the engine has good oil pressure and the milage is’nt to high it should be worth while fitting a new turbo. Here is some useful info before changing turbos on the dv6 engine. it points out that using the correct oil and keeping well within the service intervals is critical on these engines The PSA 1.6HDi, DV6TED4 engine is a highly sophisticated low emission, high power diesel unit. It is used in many different applications; Citroen, Ford, Mazda, Mini, Peugeot and Volvo. Due to the engine being clean and powerful, it is designed to operate at high temperatures, which demands the very best lubricants. These lubricants must be maintained in peak condition and PSA have fitted an in-line oil filter to the turbo and an integral oil cooler/oil filter to this engine to ensure this. However there is a drawback to this; reports in the field indicate that if the engine has been operated with the oil level below normal limits, this may potentially cause a high concentration of carbon in the oil. This may then lead to blockage of the in-line filter, oil cooler and main oil filter, which will eventually bring on premature turbo failure. The vacuum pump may also suffer from this same type of contamination. However, due to its high operating speeds (230,000 revs per minute) the turbo will usually be the first to show signs of damage. This can happen from 30,000 miles onwards if the oil level and correct oil change intervals/procedure have not been adhered to. Experience to date suggests that the carbon build up in this application is particularly difficult to remove. To try to eliminate the potential for further turbo failure, the following MUST be undertaken by the garage, in addition to the normal recommended turbo fitting instructions: TURBO OIL FEED PIPE & BANJO BOLTS MUST BE CHANGED. OIL PUMP SHOULD BE REMOVED AND CHECKED. SUMP MUST BE REMOVED AND OIL STRAINER (PICK UP) SHOULD BE CLEANED/REPLACED BEFORE RE-FITTING NEW TURBO TO REMOVE RESIDUAL CARBON/SLUDGE BUILD UP. OIL COOLER AND FILTER ASSEMBLY SHOULD BE REMOVED AND CLEANED. REMOVE CHARGE AIR COOLER, DRAIN OFF ANY OIL INSIDE AND CLEAN THOROUGHLY. CHECK AND CLEAN ALL INLET AND OUTLET HOSES. IF OIL HAS LEAKED FROM PREVIOUSLY DAMAGED TURBO OR ENGINE INTO EXHAUST, CHECK EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR CONTAMINATION/BLOCKAGE (CATALYST, DPF etc.) REMOVE BRAKE VACUUM PUMP TO CHECK FOR DEBRIS/CARBON AND CLEAN AS NECESSARY. FIT NEW OIL FILTER AND OIL. CHECK FUEL INJECTOR GASKETS ARE NOT BURNT OR COMPROMISED. REPLACE AS NECESSARY OIL FLOW MUST BE CHECKED: 1. FIT TURBO TO ENGINE LEAVING OIL RETURN PIPE OFF 2. INSTALL A LONGER OIL RETURN LINE AND FEED INTO SUITABLE CONTAINER 3. START ENGINE AND IDLE FOR 60 SECONDS, THEN SWITCH OFF ENGINE 4. MEASURE VOLUME OF OIL IN CONTAINER - 60 SECONDS OF IDLE SHOULD PRODUCE AT LEAST 0.3 LITRES OF OIL. 5. REPEAT TEST TWO OR THREE TIMES TO CONFIRM OIL FLOW IS CORRECT 6. DURING THIS TEST, DO NOT ALLOW ENGINE TO RUN BELOW MINIMUM OIL LEVEL!! 7. VEHICLE SHOULD BE DRIVEN 20 to 30 MILES THEN THE OIL/FILTER REPLACED AGAIN. Another thing a peugeot mechanic was telling me is that they usally remove the strainer (altogether) in the turbo feed pipe behind the dpf. And here is more. OIL CHANGE PROCEDURE ON ALL DV6 ENGINES It is necessary to follow a specific oil change procedure on all DV6 and DV6U engines so as to ensure that no used oil remains to mix with the new oil. The following method must be used: The engine oil temperature must be at least 50°C : - the engine oil temperature is considered to be at 50°C when the water temperature indicator is between 80°C and 90°C or the cooling fan has cut in ensure that the vehicle is level (side to side and fore and aft) remove the oil filter to allow the circuit to drain completely remove the oil filler cap and the dipstick remove the drain plug allow the oil to drain by gravity for at least 10 minutes (DO NOT USE SUCTION METHODS) fit a new oil filter refit the drain plug with a new sealing washer fill the engine with quantity of oil recommended for the engine refit the oil filler cap and the dipstick run the engine at idle until the oil pressure warning lamp goes out (about 1 minute) wait 5 minutes check the oil level using the dipstick: the level should be as close as possible to, but not exceeding the maximum mark (1) so as to be between (1) and (3) For information, the lower mark (2) = Min (0%) the upper mark (1) = Max (100%) the intermediate mark (3) = ¾ 4 of 4 CONSEQUENCES OF NOT KEEPING TO THE OIL CHANGE INTERVALS If the customer does not have the oil changed at the recommended intervals, the oil will become excessively polluted and will no longer ensure the correct lubrication of the engine. One of the first consequences is inadequate lubrication of the turbocharger bearings causing a failure which is repeated after the turbocharger is replaced. Subsequent symptoms resulting from the reduced level of lubrication will be a noisy engine and then destruction of the engine. We remind you that if the customer does not keep to the servicing intervals recommended in the Maintenance and Guarantee Guide, the customer will be responsible for the durability of the mechanical parts of the engine. In this case, the any related repairs needed are not covered by the new vehicle warranty. CONSEQUENCES OF NOT FOLLOWING THE OIL CHANGE PROCEDURE If the oil changes are not done as described above, all deposits of old oil will not be removed and will very quickly pollute the new oil, accelerating the ageing of the oil in the engine lubrication circuit (even causing the oil to congeal). The consequences for the engine are the same as if the oil change intervals are not observed. As a result, any related repairs needed are not covered under the new vehicle warranty. Quote from an independent garage.... There are big problems with poor oil change routines on 1.6HDi’s causing oil clogging in cylinder head galleries, turbo supply lubrication pipes etc which is the cause for repeated turbo failure. When replacing a failed turbo it is imperitive to replace the oil supply/return pipes. You also need to remove the sump and check the gauze on on the pump for any blockages. Finally a good check so see if there is serious internal blockages, remove the brake vacuum pump - there’s a little gauze inside that. If that has signs of blockage then you’ve got some serious internal clogging going on. We’ve had a brand new turbo literally fail within 100 mile from the impellor seizing up and the nut which secures it on the shaft coming undone and wedging in the fan blades. This particular one was an extreme case and ended up having a new engine! - Tristan Kelly from Ireland

Had the same problem with mine. I needed to refill the fuel additive container with ’INFINEUM F7995’ everytime you fill up with fuel. It squirts a small amount in to help with the emissions, then I had this part reset by my local Peugeot dealer and got a mechanic to do the refilling this stuff. Stains like sh*te but it sorted out my problem - Pete from England

Hi, I have a Peugeot 307 1.4 (2002). For a while now it keeps going limp and making a rattling noise, then the engine managment light flashes up and "anti-polution fault" and "catalistic-fault" pop up on the screen. If I stop for at least 25 minutes when this happens it disappears. It is also now draining my battery and is very hard to start at times and to get it going I sometimes have to keep my foot down for a few mins as it won’t keep the revs up? Please help.

When I turn the ignition I get a beep, as if there is a warning, but there is no warning message on the display and all the lights go out. It’s a diesel car and I wait for the stop sign to go out before I turn the ignition. Any ideas if there is a problem with the car?

Do you have tyre sensors? If so check the pressures all round. Or if they are ok, take the car to have it diagnosed as it sounds like a fault warning - Andy from Hampshire

This is definitely your coolant level indicator, next time watch carefully and you will see the light that flashes with the beep, it flashes onces and quick. If it’s the coilly light then just add a bit of coolant but make sure is the right one, if not just add a bit of water and that should be fine, am ninty nine perscent sure - Big J from England

I’ve got a problem with the steering - it goes stiff then about an hour later it goes back to normal. I’ve had two mechanics look at it and they can’t find the problem. It’s not the battery - can you help please? Many thanks, Stuart.
