Peugeot 206 2006

My Peugeot 206 has always had a problem after it starts in the morning, (I`ve had it since new), but Peugeot said there was nothing wrong. It’s as if it needs extra revs to stop it cutting out, but it has got considerably worse lately. On many occasions when approaching a t-junction or roundabout where you hold it on the bite it seems to lose power in 1st gear. I have heard that many people have problems with Peugeot 206s as they use a cheap gear-link system but I’m starting to worry about taking long journeys in the car. Can anyone help me please? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Petrol 1.4)

I had the exact same problem with my car, since I purchased it in December last year. I had it serviced, a new can belt fitted, my mechanic put it on his computer which said he couldn’t find anything wrong with it. He then got me in some engine sensors, these never sorted the problem, and then one day my battery completely died, in which I have had a new battery fitted and haven’t had the cutting out issue since. I have also noticed it now drives a lot nicer to, and I haven’t stalled once - Chloe Broughton from Suffolk

I recently bought a secondhand Peugeot 206 glx and it has hardly been out of the garage since. I had to have a new spring fitted and the new strut (supposedly) front part of the exhaust fell off last week. It is going back into the garage as now it seems to have developed an oil leak, there is a big puddle of water in the back behind the driver`s seat and all of the lights on the dashboard have failed ie. speedometer, temperature gauge, petrol gauge etc These worked again when the connector was taken off and put back onto the battery (which appears to be fairly new) but the passenger airbag light also keeps going on and off. The puddle and power failure seem to hae baffled the garage that I took the car to. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

You did not say if your car is diesel or petrol, in both cases, first check if diesel or petrol filter is dirty, and when you change it beware of the air inside the filter... second when it happens again, open the tank cover and let the air enter into the tank, because most likely that is your problem - Choukri Kayal from France

I can`t find anything at all online about this problem. Basically, my Peugeot 206`s ignition is powering on without the key. A lot of the dashboard lights come on as well as the stereo. The dashboard lights then alternate with other lights on and off. It flattens the battery obviously. When I put the key in and start the car, while it`s having this ’episode’, I can then remove the key and the engine continues to run. I have to stall it to stop the car. This problem only happens now and again. Can anyone help? (hdi)

The Abs warning light has come on in my Peugeot 206 and remains on. New break pads were fitted about a year ago, however the car has only done about 200 miles since then. It sits on a drive most of the time, only being started every few days. Why has the abs light suddenly come on?

Answers

Try to clean the ABS sensors (beside the wheels) with special spray which the electricians use, and brush the teeth of the ABS which are located in front at the end of the drive shaft, and don’t forget to do the same in the back. Hi folks. My Peugeot 206 1.4 Look, reg 2009, is a lovely little car and drive, but one thing that I cannot understand is when I put it into 1st gear and pull away into 2nd gear there is always a clunking. Is this a normal event? Whether you are slow to change gear, change at normal ratio or very careful it still happens. Some people and my garage say that this is part of the make of car. I have no other problems with any other gear changing. Any hints or help would be appreciated please?

Answers

I had a 03 307 for 6 years from new and it did it frOm day 1, but never got serious or impaired driving. I now have an 08 308 with 6sp box and again it clunks. The garage changed the gearbox oil but said it was fine but 3 years on (and out of warranty) it is now getting crunchy and £1000 for a exchange box! Good luck - Ron Dom from Lanarkshire

This is not a serious thing, you can drive your car without fear, and for a very long time, what makes this sound is the synchro ring which is located inside the gear bos between the first and the second. Now try this: when you put it into first don’t go fast and when you shift to the second, do it slowly - give it quarter of a second on neutral - then put second, I think this will do - Choukri Kayal from France

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help. I have had no major issues with my Peugeot 206 since I bought it brand new and know it’s getting on a bit now! I topped up my water for windscreen (which I normally do) and engine cooler and checked my air filter (garage normally does) and seemed fine and just put everything back again. This was done 2 days ago and have not used it since however the car drives fine in 1st and 2nd, but as soon as I go into 3rd it chugs and changing to 4th does the same too. Not sure if this was about to happen anyway or have I not done something when putting the air filter back together again? Thanks in advance.

I am looking to buy a Peugeot 206 04 plate. It is petrol and has a mileage of 105,000 miles. It’s being sold for £1750. Everyone is telling me to steer clear of high mileage cars when I buy, but I’ve also been told Peugeot 206’s go on forever. Should I buy this car? It drives, looks and sounds great. And to be honest I fell in love with it but I’m worried about the mileage since being told to steer clear of that and I don’t want it breaking down a few months down the line. Any advice?

Hi, I have a 206 GTI Rallye. It has started running rough, so through process of elimination I have found that injectors 1 an 4 work spasmodically. I swapped them with the other two but it made no difference. I am thinking that the ECU may have had it but I’m not sure. No dash warning light appears. If the car starts rough it always stays rough. If I turn the ignition on an off about 10 times, most times - not always, it will start with the four injectors working. Providing I don’t turn it off it’s OK. If it’s turned off then the problem starts all over again. Does anyone have any ideas?

My wife and I are very sad owners of a 2002 Roland Garros edition Peugeot. The issue is that cylinder 4 is misfiring making the car shake while idling, make weird noises, high petrol consumption, fail MOT and to a point that we want to get rid of the car in anyway possible. The car has been looked at by a few mechanics whom claimed are the best in the field, yeah right, and end result is that no one knows what’s wrong with the car. I refuse to take the car to a Peugeot dealer as they’re extremely expensive and untrustworthy. The following checks have been done: Diagnosis test showed cylinder 4 misfiring and nothing else. All 4 spark plugs and the pressure on all four are functioning fine. Injector 4 changed. Coil pack changed, oil and filter changed, oxygen sensor checked. The mechanics all claim that they have checked everything and anything they could and suggest that the ECU is the suspect. Before sending the ECU to be checked I wanted to know if something has been missed by the mechanics which could cause this headache. And if that wasn’t bad enough as a result of the shaking, the exhaust has come loose from its place which makes it difficult going over speed bumps.

A week ago my 206 started up in idle really wobbly (if that makes sense) in a low gear it was slow to pull off but seemed OK in a higher gear but still not right. Had a diagnostic and came up that it’s injector 4. Since today it has gone back to normal and drives like it should. Although now the ems light is still flashing. If the fault has rectified itself (hoping) will the ems light go off on its own or does it have to be reset with a diagnostic? Is it possible that it could rectify itself that maybe there was just dirt and it’s cleared?

It then started shaking and misfiring. I parked up and called the garage. They collected the next day. They did not use tow truck but drove car back to garage, however after while boot started filling with smoke and when they opened it, it was full of smoke and stuff had been melted. The car was then towed back to garage. It’s been in 3 days and they still can’t find the problem - PLEASE HELP! I need my car for work - what can I do?

I believe your car had made at least over 200k, and it is diesel, if so, try to see if your exhaust is blocked. This happened with my son in Belgium and the garage told him to sell his car because the engine is blown, when he rang me, I asked him to hammer the exhaust hard on several places while the engine is running, and the result was fine after that he changed the whole exhaust, and the car is running very smooth since then -  Choukri Kayal from France

Hi all. I wonder if anyone can help me here? I am a typical woman driver and I know nothing about cars. In the last two weeks, on a few occasions I’ve started the car and it’s been jerky (this hasn’t happened first thing in the morning either, it’s occurred later on in the day). Today I had used it, it was fine, left it 10 minutes, went to go out again and it was jerky. So I sat and watched the rev counter, it went up to 20 even though my foot was nowhere near pedals. I went to pull away after the rev counter went back to normal and there it was, with the jerks, it’s like the revs are not high enough for the gear? It seems to be in the lower gears, 1st 2nd and 3rd (the car is fine in 4th and 5th gear). Anyway I had to pull over a few times in my road before I felt it was steady enough to drive away. It’s a right pain in the bum, as when I go to show someone the car behaves itself :( Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening? Many thanks.

Is it petrol? I know these cars well, I also own a Peugeot. Sounds like a fuel blockage or an air blockage or auto choke problem or idle valve problem. Yeah its petrol 1.1 1999. I only had it serviced a few weeks ago as the service light came on. It seems like one thing after another with my car. My passenger airbag light is on but there is no fault with the airbag. Does anyone know how to reset it without going to the dealers at £60+? (3 door Hatch)

Answers

Have you tried the pass airbag switch on the driver side right of the steering wheel? This may be the problem - Ben Holden from England

I’m familiar with these vehicles and own a 2000 Peugeot 306 hdi. I have owned for three years which has been very reliable, does 62 mpg at 70mph and has only broken down once due to the lift pump in the fuel tank giving up at 100k miles (currently 178k). I am aware of a problem with the srs system on these vehicles namely the 206, 306 and 307s. Mine had a similar problem three months after buying it. The airbag light would come on and flash, it was very annoying as the warning light is directly under the rev/speedo dials. I considered taking the bulb out or taping over it with black tape anything to avoid seeing that damn flashing srs light after driving 900 miles to and from Scotland several times with the problem. Didn’t want to pay the dealer £50 to rest the system and it wouldn’t have fixed it anyway. I found out it was due to a wire clip under the passenger seat that had become slightly separated tripping the srs system and causing the light to flash on the dash. It does it on quite a few Peugeots apparently and can be due to a passenger just putting their weight on the seat too fast thus separating the wire clip, it’s a common fault and occasionaly still happens on mine when I have a heavy passenger who jumps in too fast. Can also be due to the seat sagging with age as it is directly under it. Turning the airbag system off results in a solid orange srs light on the dash to come on which also infuriated the hell outta me as I’m very particular about warning lights etc. Okay to fix the problem turn ignition off take key out. Look directly under the middle of the passenger seat, you should see an orange clip joining about four wires together then disappearing into a cut in the carpet, it’s part of the srs system. It may appear to still be joined but the wiring can still be disconnected or not making enough contact to stop it tripping the system thus causing the light to come on. UNPLUG IT- NOW PLUG IT BACK IN AGAIN pressing the connection together firmly. Ok now put the key in turn ignition on start car check to see HAS THE LIGHT GONE OFF. It should have if it has not repeat the procedure for the drivers side it has the same connection and can have exactly the same problem. For some reason, it will probably be the passenger one or soo my mate a Peugeot mechanic says ;-) hope this helps you - Chris Bate from England

Hi there. I just bought a Peugeot 206 GLX 1.6 (16v). I drove it home and was working fine for about an hour but then it seemed to cut out. I pulled over fine and dandy and went through the motions. I tried to turn it over but every time it would sound like it was going and then stop within seconds. I cannot get the engine running long enough to see it has petrol but from what I remember there was around 1/4 of a tank or just less. I kept trying. The battery then became drained and wouldn’t turn over at all. So I decided I should charge the battery overnight. The battery is now charged and I reinstalled it. Back to the same turning over but not starting. Certain lights will come on the dash: Air bag, Petrol Gauge Warning, Battery Warning, Oil Warning, Hand Break and Auto diagnostics. It would seem that it could be a problem with the ECU or injector system, or possibly that my battery is unable to hold a charge. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (GLX)

Answers

I don’t think it is the ECU. Pull the wire off the throttle body and put back on do things like that. I put a new throttle body on mine and it wouldn’t start. Pull wire off put back on and it started. Is it turning over fast? If it is, the cambelt has gone. Put some petrol in it to make sure - Steve from England

I had the same problem with my 2002 206. It was the alternator. Various lights would come up on the dash, i.e. Air Bag, ABS etc and then the battery would go dead. The garage changed the battery but then the next day, it went dead again. Apparently, the altenator powers the battery and is responsible for all the lights on the dash. You should make sure its replaced with a new alternator and not a second hand one - Marina Georgiadi from Gloucestershire

It may sound daft but try putting some petrol in it. A common fault with some 206 fuel gauges is that it reads 1/4 when empty. Try sticking a few litres in then try starting it - Mark Boyd from Ayrshire

I am having a problem with my Peugeot 206’s windscreen and windows in that they are not de-misting, no matter whether the fan is on full or not. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem? It’s getting to a stage where it is dangerous to drive it...

Answers

It could simply be that your heating system is not getting hot enough to demist but alternatively you may have a moisture build up in your blowers. Try cleaning out your heating system or otherwise take it into a garage. Most main dealers offer service deals for these problems through winter - Will from England

It might be that the cabin air recirculation button is always on, this prevents fresh air getting in but cabin humidity eventually rises thus no drying out is happening inside the car - Dusty Hoff from Hampshire

How do I know if my odometer has been tampered with? I just bought the car with under 65000 km and now with just over 65000 km the timing belt has broken... that seems too soon and I suspect foul play.... is there anyway to check?

Answers

Go to the gov website, put the MOT number in. This will show your MOT going back to 2005, you can then see the miles the car has done. Cambelt is 80,000 miles or 10 years which ever comes first. You are right, the cambelt should not have broken at 65,000. I had a mate who had a Peugeot, the mileage went from 94,000 to 240,000 as he was driving so they do go wrong, it may have had a second hand clock - Steve from England

If you go to key cutter shop and give him your key, he will tell you exactly how many miles the car did, because most of them, cutters have that machine even tells the code of the car - Choukri Kayal from France

My car is a Peugeot 206 1.6 S reg. Part of my exhaust needs replacing but today a light came on and when I’ve looked up what this light was for this is what it said: Engine autodiagnostics light, indicates a malfunction in injection, ignition or emission control system. Could this light of come on due to my exhaust?

Answers

It depends on where the fault with your exhaust is. If it’s before any of the sensors or between them ie. at the front of your car or the middle then this could be the case and it’s merely an emissions light, fix your exhaust and have it turned off. However if it’s a silencer issue this would most likely not affect your warning lamps so it would be worthwhile going to a garage - Will from England

So, in order to get a quote I rung some garages, one said they could replace just the CV joint for £141, another said you can’t replace just the CV joint and another said it is cheaper to replace the whole drive shaft. Please help, which is cheaper and can you replace just the CV joint? I have been told it is the OUTER CV joint. It is a 1.4-litre petrol Peugeot 206 (2000). Thank you.

Just got the car in question, the orange seal between the turbo inlet and the corresponding hose was protruding! I loosened the hose clip and refitted the seal into the hose - it was split and looked like it had been over tightened! My question though is... The inside of the hose is coated in engine oil! I realise that this is recirculation of engine gasses fort the emissions, but just how much oil should be in there? Could any excess be caused by a air filter that needs changing? The servicing is up to date (apparently) so it should have been changed (but you never know) - haven’t had time to check it yet! Looks like more than a ten minute job! (1.6 HDI)

Answers

I would have a look at the stalk switch first if you are electrically minded. If you aren’t, take it to an auto electrician. You could always replace the stalk which would be cheaper probably than an auto electrician. I have just had a look at the Haynes manual and the most obvious thing is the stalk switch, it’s the only switch in the circuit. The connector at the stalk is grey in colour and wiring is across 1 and 3 pins check this opens (open circuit) when turning off foglight, use multimeter to check. Try ebay for a light stalk...good luck - Billy from Ayrshire

When I was doing my apprenticeship, my college tutor used to set up a 206 fault just like that. It was a short circuit in the rear light obviously this is maybe a bit specific but it’s worth checking for bad earths and short circuits before you go buying new parts - Will from England

Answers

At a guess, I would say that your auto cooling fan is not operating, i.e comes on when the coolant reaches a certain temperature, so when you’re stationary, the engine will just start to get hotter and overheat, however when you are moving, there is a certain amount of flowing air coming through the front grill to cool it down a little. If it has got a verified service history (with the stamps and receipts) then, depending on how many owners and it has been driven, you should get more mileage out of it. The external condition is often a good sign, as is the driver’s seat condition. If it’s been used around town all its life then I would be wary. If you have a respectable dealer near you (ie. Wilcos or something similar), you can buy a new one for about £70 depending on your model. Hope this helps - Becky from England

I have a new clutch on my 206 but it is hard to get into gear. Could this be the clutch cable which was not replaced and if so, how does the self adjuster work?

Answers

Self adjusting clutch cables work by extending the outer cable length or shortening automatically in order to leave the central operating cable the correct lenghth. If you’re having trouble engaging a gear and the cable is old then it could be faulty and not adjusting correctly. Check by having someone look at the clutch lever under the bonnet while you press the clutch pedal down. If the pedal travels a long way before moving the clutch lever under the bonnet then you probably need a new clutch cable - Bob Disdell from Staffordshire

First of all gear 3 went, it would engage but once in would act as if it’s not in gear and just revs out with a whining noise... from that gear 5 then became a big problem to engage. Now it can’t make its mind up on what gear it wants to work first, it goes stiff then loose as normal then it locks in a certain gear then locks in nuetral... Can anyone help?

My car broke down yesterday. I have been told that the clutch release bearing has broken, meaning 4 to 5 hours labour and the gear box taking out. Could anyone please give me an idea how much this might cost? Thank you.

Answers

Depends where you go. Dealer charges between £40 and £60 per hour. But I would stick to a smaller garage which has been recommended as you can get a fixed price and you don’t pay for the glossy dealership image - Andy from Hampshire

When I switch on the ignition the engine management light stays on. There is also a message stop that flashes a couple of times then goes out. The engine sounds fine but lacks power and is very sluggish and won’t go faster than around 50 mph. If I rev the car when stationary and some black smoke from exhaust. The car is a Peugeot 206 1.4 hdi diesel. Can anybody advise?

Answers

Could be the ignition coils. Guess it’s firing on two cylinders now. Advice is to take it to a garage with a diagnosis machine before the ECU is affected which might be expensive to replace. Good luck - Gibbs from Essex
