Should a gear box in a Nissan X Trail last less than 50,000 miles? Would this be the norm for a Nissan with a list price of £27,000 when new?

A year ago I had problems with the fuel system of my Nissan X-Trail 2.2 diesel. The car was kangarooing when being driven so I had the fuel filter replaced. There was a great improvement but I can still tell that there is a minor problem. The fuel lines have been flushed through and the pressure checked and all`s okay. Additionally, on random occasions the car can be started and will idle but it won`t accelerate. I`m lucky if it gets to 1500rpm. If I switch off and restart it the car accelerates okay, apart from this glitch. Also, after running the car, when I take my foot off the accelerator the engine note sounds okay but there seems to be an additional revving sound, (a bit like the engine is running on but it isn’t). The garage mechanics are at a loss. Any ideas anyone? (2.2 dci)
Answers
You need to get someone to plug this in and get the fault codes - it doesn’t have to be a dealership for this. You can then Google the fault codes and it will give you ideas for the specific problem. Last year our 2.2 dci started displaying similiar symptoms to yours. Fault code suggested it was suction control valve on fuel pump. Got a new one and my own garage replaced it, with some difficulty I must say. After this I had to take it (at low power) to a dealer to reprogramme the pump. This is unavoidable and as far as I know, only dealers can do this. Was not unduly expensive. When the dealer technician returned the X Trail to me, he advised that I may have further problems and fuel pump may need replaced at some point in the future. A couple of months later he was proved right. Fortunately, in the intervening period, I had taken out warranty cover with Warranty Direct at a very reasonable monthly cost. This covered the vast majority of the cost of replacing the fuel pump with a warrantied reconditioned one from a specialist repairer down south which was replaced at a dealership. While I did have to pay out for the repair, it was a fraction of the cost of paying for all of it myself. Hope this may help you although I’m sure it may not be exactly what you want to hear. I could be wrong of course - hope I am. Regards - Eugene Tracey from Scotland

Hi. I blew some fuses on my Nissan X-Trail by plugging in a doggy trailer lead. We managed to change the fuse to get the front full lights and indicators working, but seem unable to find a fuse for the back full lights and front side lights. The brake lights are working fine. Any ideas please?

Hi. I have a Nissan 2.2 X-Trail turbo diesel that keeps cutting out when I’m driving it. It seems okay until it warms up. I got a friend to change the fuel filter but it is still the same. It doesn`t accelerate properly just before it cuts out and then it won`t start straight away. If I give it about a minute or 2 it starts and revs fine but then keeps cutting out every half a mile. I managed to get it home and just left it ticking over for about half an hour and it revs up fine even when warm, it`s just when I`m driving. It is high mileage. Can anyone advise me?

This X-Trail is equipped with a central door automatic locking system that actives after 30 seconds when the car is parked with the engine off. An average of two times per month my wife leaves the key in the car and the trouble starts; taking a taxi to get the spare key at home and all the annoyance, trouble and unnecessary expense. The Nissan dealer in Peru does not know how to deactivate the auto-locking system - I do not believe them. Any suggestions?

Nissan X-Trail, serviced from new by dealer. Faults are hesitation/juddering under load, mostly in gears 2 to 5 but not uncommon in 6th. On onset of juddering rpm counter fluctuates by 100 to 200 rpm, juddering worse once engine warms up but again not uncommon when cold. Easing off of accelerator sometimes cuts judder but sometimes not. MAF sensor changed which dealt with a low power on pull away in 1st but no cure to original fault. Plug on reader reveals no fault codes. Check of vacuum pipes reveals no splits or kinks. Susupect have fixed one fault but stumped with second. (2.2 SVE)

My Nissan X-Trail occasionally loses power when driving. It stalled completely and took a couple of goes to make it start again, and after that was fine. When starting I have noticed that it takes a second or two more to start than it normally does. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? (tdi Aventura)

This happened to me and it was a starter module/switch problem. The dealership replaced it and no problems since. They should be able to diagnose it easily - Allison from Canada
This is a worldwide problem for XTrails and just when you thought you had it sorted...it’s back. I call it my SAD syndrome as it appears to strike big time annually in May-August/Sept. Could be linked to an increase in dust/reduced humidity and a sensor drying out that needs moisture of some sort. Along those lines, I’ve changed the MAF sensor which does have a wire that apparently can get mucked up with dirt. This is part of the airflow mix regulator and will cause juddering. Other theories include; loose cam shaft sensor - intercooler (very expensive unless reconditioned) - the fuel pump (very expensive!) - accelerator sensor (there’s no cable apparently) - and more. The list goes on, I’ve done the MAF and had a good response but probably need to do it again now only a few years later. Intercooler was reconditioned and the car was brilliant until I filled up then back to old tricks but not as bad. One cheap fix my mechanic was discussing was the potential of a vacuum forming in the tank. Do you notice a rush of air when you run the tank low and open the cap? The suggestion is not to put the cap fully on! Cheap and cheerful if that sorts it I’ll let you know. On the downside I think the clutch has just gone so we’ll see if at 202,000, it’s worth repairing or not! - Ronan M Smith from County Down

Dear all, I bought a Nissan X-Trail 2006 2.2 CDI Advantage 4 months ago and have just noticed that when I drive it on the motorway the car ’kangaroos’ at speed. It feels as though the fuel supply is being restricted and when I press hard on the accelerator, fairly large plumes of smoke become visible in my rear view mirror. Has anyone had any similar problems?

Has this just happened recently? If so, sounds like water in the fuel filter under the bonnet. You get more water in diesel fuel during winter months, it’s harder to separate due to the cold. Before spending loads of cash, get the fuel filter changed - James Mitchell from England
Mine did that too, changed the fuel filter and all was perfect gain. A well known garage (KF) didn’t! Change it in the service and really messed it up when I took it back. The Nissan garage charged £550 to fix it, which the original garage paid for. Good luck - Peter Eadsforth from Aberdeenshire

Thinking of buying the said car as it looks great for its age with low mileage (66k) and FSH. However when I revved, it kicked out some smoke from the exhaust - nothing major or great plumes of the stuff - but is a bit of smoke for a diesel normal under forced revs? I’m a girl remember and dont want to be ripped off. Its price is £3,945. Looking forward to your reply as need to decide on the car by tommorrow. Nearly forgot, when I bounced on the bonnet, there was some squeak from the back I think. Is this normal too?! (Diesel Di sport)
