My Nissan Terrano`s engine is turning over but it doesn`t want to catch or idle. Any ideas please?

Answers

Hi! Yes it could well be the crankshaft sensor at fault if this is breaking down it will send a message to the fuel pump - no pump fuel, hence engine wont start, worth having diagnostics check, costs around £40 and it will show up straight away. I fitted one of these a while back, I remember it cost me around the £100 mark - not cheap for a little sensor. These are a known fault, hope this helps. Best of luck - Alan Tucker from Torfaen

Does anyone know how to change the timer relay (at least that`s what I think it`s called) for the interior light on my W reg Nissan Terrano? It won`t work on the auto switch for example when you open the door. There doesn`t seem to be a lot of information on this. When on auto mode it just seems to glow and won`t go out. Can anyone help? Cheers. (2.7 TDI intercooler)

It’s a water leak! Top up with water then run engine and look where it’s leaking from. Most common places are the radiator, or Water pump. But don’t run the engine for too long when HOT, it will cause damage - Alan Tucker from Torfaen

When I drive off in my Nissan Terrano in the morning if it`s been wet, I will drive off, then change gear or stop at a junction, put my foot on the throttle and get no response. I have to turn the engine off and switch it back on and then the car`s okay again. Can anyone suggest why?

Answers

I had the same problem and as you say turning off the engine and restarting it done the trick until the next time. It was doing me head in and no one could help me UNTIL one day I was reading about the MAF sensor (mass air sensor) - it’s just in front of the air filter and it must be kept clean and in good order so I took the air filter off and found that a piece of rubber had torn off from the air filter and was flapping on the sensor. Sounds strange I know. But this was the cause of all my trouble. It’s been going like a train ever since I removed that bit of rubber. I’m not saying it’s your problem but it’s worth a look. If not this it could be the throttle itself, they are a fly by wire type on the Terrano and you will need someone with a diagnostics machine. It should show up as a throttle fault and an auto electrician will charge you about £40 for this test. Best of luck - Alan Tucker from Torfaen

I’ve just bought a Nissan Terrano today and have been given a Nissan cd changer to go with it, but it hasn’t been fitted. Looking through this site I found where it should go but I can’t find the wiring loom. Is it under the carpet? Although I have the changer I don’t have a mounting bracket. Are they easy to source without the player itself? Thanks. (11 TDi)

I own a 1996 Nissan Terrano 2.7 tdi right hand drive. On cold start it surges on idle and quits and I have to turn the ignition off for a few seconds to restart. Once started it will go until you take your foot off the throttle then it stalls and the ecu light flashes. Once warmed up after 10 minutes it runs fine and the engine light goes out. It`s something electronic as it resets when you turn the key off and on, you can hear a click and then it will start. Can this be the solenoid on injector pump? (2.7 tdi.)

Answers

Hi! This problem sounds like it could well be the heater plugs not working. If it’s OK when the engine is warm I would change the heater plugs. You can buy them from ebay a bit cheaper - Alan Tucker from Torfaen

I have a Nissan Terrano 2.7 tdi. It all of a sudden started missing and puffing white smoke out, it also put engine management light on. I have put a complete engine in it with pump injectors, turbo etc and the vehicle still does the same. I was told to by pass the fuel filter, so I put a clear pipe out of a can straight to the pump. This has helped a bit but still got a miss when I accelerate. Any ideas?

We are having exactly the same problem with 1998 2.7 tdi. We were told it was a EGR valve and on having a diesel fitter check he said there wasn’t one on our car!!! We had the same problem a year ago and after a clean and new filters it stopped and has happened again now!!! We have removed a small filter in fuel line banjo and had all filters changed!!! Air, fuel and oil!!! No avail, we have tried to read the code at two garages but with no luck as the management light wouldn’t always be on!!! Have you found the answer to yours yet Eddie??? Nissan Terrano 1999

Hi, can anyone help me with my problems? I have a 1999 Nissan Terrano 2.7 tdi. The problem started in November 2011 in the cold weather - my Terrano, when first started up in the morning would sound rough with no power in the engine. The engine management light would come on and when driven for about an hour, then turned off and left for 30 minutes, and then started the engine would run fine with no check light on for the rest of the day. Now the latest is that on mild days when the engine is started first thing in the morning there is no check light on and the engine runs fine and then we get a cold day then the previous is repeated. Reading on the net I thought it might have been the number 1 fuel injector which I’ve learnt is also called the needle lift sensor injector and controls the timing, which I replaced. This has not made any difference at all. I also have replaced the fuel filter, so I booked the Terrano into a diesel specialist who claim that the diagnostic test had shown no faults at all. I must add that when the Terrano was booked in the engine was running fine with no check light on. The diesel specialist said that they had taken out a wire mesh filter which is just on top of the fuel pump under a banjo bolt, they claim this was full of debris. The engine ran OK with no check light on but that was like that when the Terrano went in. Today, the 24/2/2012, the Terrano was started up this morning with check light on, engine running rough and no power when driving it. Any help would be great because I’m at a lost end. Thanks.

Answers

Hi Tony, my best answer is to purchase an OBD cable and scanner/software to plug into the grey 14 pin plug situated behind the fuses on the drivers side (I believe)... As I am too experiencing the engine management light on my Terrano II tdi 1999. The scanner, cable and diagnostic software can be purchased on eBay cheaply enough, tonight I will be buying one for no more than £50. I have only just purchased this Terrano 3 days ago via a garage - however all be it that it has some warranty, I just don’t fully trust companies, therefore I prefer learning the truth and passing it on to them to correct and not fob me off... Hi. I have had a problem with the fuel cut off solenoid on my Nissan Terrano. I have replaced this and all is well except the engine check light is still on. Is there a way of clearing the fault code without going to a main dealer? (SE 2.7 diesel)

Answers

Yes there is, is it a 16 pin or a 14 pin diag? - Taz from England

Yes! First check if you have a 14 pin diagnostic plug if so get yourself a short bit of wire 4" is enough then with ignition on bridge the first two connections on your left as you look at the plug, this will cause the engine light on your dash to flash out the fault code once this has happened take one end of the wire off for two seconds then then put it back on for two seconds. This should clear any fault codes (the diagnostic plug is drivers side right keen just under the dash). Good luck - Alan Tucker from Torfaen

Cheers Alan, and yes it’s a 14 pin plug, a little one, grey under the dash! - Taz from England

Can anyone advise me as to how I might reset the central locking on my Nissan Terrano as it is not working and the indicators are flashing. This is a key working central locking in the door, not a fob.

Answers

Answer Julian, try reprogramming the keyfob. To reprogram (enter new ID) key fob (keyless remote controller) follow the steps. 1. Close all doors and lock all doors 2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition key cylinder more than six times within 10 seconds. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash.) NOTE: Key should be withdrawn from ignition key cylinder completely each time. NOTE: Do not rush the insertion/removal key cycling process. The side marker/tail/license lamps and interior illumination will flash twice when this step is accurately completed. 3. Insert key on ignition key cylinder and turn ignition key switch to "AAC" position. At this time, the new ID code is entered and original (previous) ID codes are erase. 4. Press any button on the new remote controller once. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash) NOTE: Do not press the button more than one time in the above step. If the button is pressed more than one time, the programming procedure will not be successful. The side marker/tail/license lamps and interior illumination will flash twice when this step is accurately completed and programming is successful. If there is only one remote controller, skip step 5. 5. Additional ID code entry. Release the door lock, then lock again with door lock/unlock switch (In power window main switch) 6. Remove key from ignition. 7. Unlock driver side door, open driver side door and then close the door. (END) NOTE: If you need to activate more than two additional new remote controllers, repeat the procedure on step 5 "Additional ID code entry" for each new remote controller. NOTE: Entry of maximum four ID codes is allowed and any attempt to enter more will be ignore. If this does not work take the door panel off and check to see if the wires to the drivers door key are broken or grounding. The key should turn the alarm off when you unlock the door. So, if the keyfob reprogramming does not do the trick remove the door panel and check the wires to the lock - Barry Linden from South Africa

Steve Peacock, Dorset

Nissan Terrano 1993

Can anyone help? I have bought a diesel Nissan Terrano 2 on a 93 plate with low mileage. It has been stood up for about 18 months, it passed MOT and went well for 2 days then it lost power, would not rev over 2000 and will tick over fine until you put throttle down and then it loses power and smokes. I changed the fuel filter as the old one was blocked up and still it wouldn’t go any better. I changed the fuel filter housing as I thought it was letting air in. I cleaned out fuel tank. If I pump the primer pump it will run and a soon as I stop the power goes again. Any ideas?

Answers

Hi Steve. If you try to rev up and it smokes, check the primer pump on top of fuel filter doesn’t creep down. If it does, you may need a new one. You could also remove and clean EGR valve, better still remove two bolts and place a metal plate between valve and housing to block it off. Hope this helps - Jim from Angus (Forfarshire)

Hi Steve, I had exactly the same problem with my Terrano, turned out to be a small bullet type filter underneath the olive union where the diesel enters the pump Remove the two bolts then the spring with a fine piece of wire locate the filter, about the size of a 22mm bullet and clean, then replace. Mine’s been fine ever since. Hope this solves your problem mate - Glynn Spooner from England
