I was driving my car yesterday and braked at give way lines. The engine then lost all power and would not restart. The lights and radio are working and the breakdown man checked the battery and that seems fine. He also checked the oil and did not remark on that so I presume the oil level is also fine. I think I heard a crack noise earlier but I might have just gone over something.

Answers

Hi,check the fusable link to the battery hasn't corroded.Quite common on these when they get old and have been parked outside most of their lives, The fusable link is attached to your battery and is easy to find. The symptoms you describe are typical of the fusable link failing. The battery itself can be fine while the link is not.Your lights etc will still work because they are on a different ,low tension circuit. The fusable link is part of your ignition circuit. If it fails, the engine will cut out just as you describe, and not restart. Essentially, battery- fusable link- ignition coils- spark plugs. Connected in that order. Fraser Gray from Highland

There doesn't appear to be any warning lights on the dashboard and the alarm seems to stop if I get out of the car and lock it. Can a faulty lambda sensor trigger other electrical faults? Today my power steering failed - I had ignored the lambda sensor fault warning for weeks as it is just a glorified emissions meter and continued to drive with the warning light on - but today the power steering warning light also came on and then the power steering failed, returning after a short period of the engine being switched off and now apparently running fine. It is clearly an electrical fault and not a duff pump.(The weather had been wet). I strongly suspect the ECU is picking up the lambda fault and now intermittently causing the power steering electrics to cut out. I also think that replacing the lambda sensor will probably fix both problems and I sure don't want to / will not pay hundreds for a new power steering unit. Anyone know about this?

Answers

Hi Fraser, as far as I'm aware a duff Lambda sensor will not only affect emissions / mpg but, too rich a fuel mixture can and will damage the cat which will also result in £££££s. Can`t see this problem affecting the (PS) electric power steering, which by the way IS a known fault on the Micra, but you don't hear the manufacturers shouting about it!! Phil from Kent

i have a nissan march 2004 and have notice for the last three months that it has been giving some problems. when i explained to the mechanic what is happening he is unsure of the diagnosis. here go, sometimes i am driving and then without any warning the car loses power, despite depressing the gas pedal the car does not go any faster. other times i will feel the steering wheel vibrate and then the car loses power. on other occasions, there is a burning rubber smells and power is loss as well. this is not consistent and possible lost for 3 to 5 minutes, sometimes it happen shortly after i move off or after i have been driving for a while. your assistance please

Answers

Sonny hi, you may have more than one fault here as the burning smell suggests an electrical fault (or binding brakes). For the power loss it may be one of the following - fuel filter choked, fuel pump faulty, air filter blocked or dirty, worn out spark plugs. Also, check that your battery is connected up properly and tightly, it could be something as simple as a poor battery terminal connection. Check the simple and easy things first, that is the battery, the binding brakes and the spark plugs. These cars don't usually go wrong,(if they have been properly serviced) and when they do it's usually something simple. Fraser Gray from Highland

my indecators work when i start the engine and run for a while then they all stop, after a short while i start the engine again and they work for awhile and they stop again, i am wondering if it is an old fuse, its 15 years old with 80,000 just about on the clock

Answers

I havn't got an answer for you but was wondering if you have solved the problem yet, we have the same fault with a 2003 micra although indicators/hazzards have completely stopped working now. I was told to change the hazzard switch but this didn't cure fault. I've checked all the fuses and the bulbs are ok as they flash when locking/unlocking car. graham, from County Fermanagh

The drivers door will not lock but all the others do , this is a big problem can someone tell me what is wrong with it , and how much it will cost to fix it

Answers

Stephanie, Nissan accepted that there was a problem with the central locking system on the Micra (it was caused by a duff switch in the boot) and they recalled all the vehicles some time ago, when you would have had it fixed for free. They should have written to you as the registered keeper. Try contacting Nissan and see if they will still honour the recall, or get them to agree a refund of the garage bill, the boot switch is expensive. I'm sorry but I can't remember the date of the recall. Good luck. Don't fork out a bean until you get some satisfaction from Nissan. Fraser Gray from Highland

Right, I have my X Reg Micra at my garage where I work, Had it 8 months in storage till I passed my test, took it to my garage to do some bits on it and noticed that the Dash speedo, temp and fuel illuminating lights do not work, initially thinking it was just the fuse or bulb/s we also the noticed that the side lights, tail lights and number plate lights are also in-op, so we change the 10A fuse under the bonnet and it just blows every time we turn the lights on, I have not wired the radio to the light earth lookalike and have disconnected all electrical components I have added to the car, still blew, Disconnected the rear lights and side lights and it still blows and disconnected the Dash instrument cluster, and it is still blowing. We have done a battery, spark plugs front disks and pads, two C/V boots, welding to the o/s/r outer wheel arch and adjusted the rear drums and hand brake along with a oil and filter change and a fuel filter. I have personally seen all the lights working on the front and the rear on my Micra before I stored it, and it was only Monday that It has been seen doing this...

Hello, I have a Nissan Micra k11 16valve 1000cc running on injection and it won't run? It's got half a tank of fuel, the fuel pump is pumping fuel into the injectors, it`s got a spark on all 4 but spark plugs are bone dry? We put brake cleaner in the manifold and it fires straight up then dies once it's burnt the brake cleaner, so it`s not running on its own fuel. It's a chipped loom and ecu, bhp 54, pre face lift. I need to know how to cure it as I'm meant to be racing it in January? Cheers

There seems to be a common problem with Battery draining. My car is 2003,5dr,auto. My mechanic has not charged me a penny because he cannot find a fault. When the battery is drained now he comes around to the house to check the car before taking it back to his garage. He has checked with other garages/mechanics and the local Nissan Dealer and nobody has heard of the problem but now I have discovered that other owners have similar faults. So there is a Nissan Micra 2003 problem. Like other owners, the battery is new, the charge is held for a day or four, the discharge is within tolerances, the ammeter is charging AOK, and the drain 'rate' is acceptable ---and the interior light bulbs have been removed. Very very dispiriting

Answers

I've heard of this problem myself and the problem was down to the tailgate's central locking seloniod constantly trying to lock even when locked and that being the cause of the small battery drainage . colin from Lincolnshire

I'm considering buying an 03 plate Micra 1.5 dCi SE 5dr. The price seems pretty low £1350 but the dealer admits there is an issue. The oil pressure warning light stays lit for 15 seconds after startup and the computer display advises contacting a Nissan dealer. After 15 seconds the light on the dash goes out and the computer reverts back to normal. It doesn't sound rattly but only heard it start from warm. I've just got a new job working about 30 miles away and need a reliable motor on a budget. Is this going to be a major issue. The dealer has put 500 miles on it with this fault, doesn't know what the problem is and seems confident that it is not a problem - but then he would. I'd appreciate any advice you can offer.

Generally, the oil light will stay on for a little while and you can expect it to be a little longer as the car ages, though 15 seconds does seem longer then normal, I would suggest checking the oil level, if it is low that could be causing it, as it could if it was overfilled, Alternatively, if the oil level is fine the oil pressure sensor could be on its way out, If I was you I would want to hear the car start up and run from cold.
