Hi, I changed the battery on my 03 plate Almera and lost my radio/cd output . RADIO SAYS CODE IN. I went to local Nissan dealer who had said come in with log book and proof of ID and they would issue code for £20. When I got there, after a long drive I might add, they said the car would need booking in and the dash stripping back to reset the radio at a cost of £75! Can this really be right for a four digit code, the radio just says code in.

Answers

Hi Kim, I had this problem on my Nissan Almera and on a Smart car and just took the car to a local car audio specialist. They kept the car for a couple of hours and charged me about £20 - 25 - Richard Webster from Oxfordshire

Err, bit embarrassing! Trying to change rear brake pads. Haynes manual says pull spring clip on handbrake cable bracket on calliper. Trouble is, in the manual it’s a "C" shaped cutout. The cable releases enough to unhook the end from the calliper. On the car though, it’s just a circular hole. Even with the spring clip out, I can’t unhook the handbrake cable do I can open the calliper and change the pads. Really confused. Any able to direct me to an Idiots Guide please? (Petrol 1.8)

How can I fix my front windscreen wipers on Nissan Almera Tino SE? I have changed the fuse but still nothing...

Answers

If the old fuse was blown then it’s most likely a motor change - around £250 if done by a main dealer. If the old fuse wasn’t blown then an investigation may show a simple fault but sadly I think it will probably come back to the motor and its inbuilt electrical circuit switching. I am about to try and fix a problem on mine (again) but expect to have to buy a new motor which fortunately I can install myself being a retired engineer - Steve from Hampshire

My windscreen wipers work fine but don’t seem to return to a low point on the screen - they stop in the middle of the screen. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Answers

This is most likely a similar cause to my w/s wiper problem. The motor has an angled gearbox which drives a disc with contact rings on it. These rings have gaps in them so that the motor runs (after selecting wipers to OFF) until it reaches the gap (the park position). Unfortunately this disc and its contact rings get corroded and cause the wipers to "park" in the wrong place on the screen. I managed to remove the motor, open up the gearbox and "clean up" the corroded disc but not very satisfactorily. It got my Tino through the MOT last March but the problem eventually returned once the damper weather returned. I’ve seen Ebay and such like replacement motors from £55 to £180 and I was quoted well over £200 to fit a new one by a Nissan dealer. Beware that a replacement motor needs to be matched with the year of manufacture of the Tino - Steve from Hampshire

Can anyone please tell me the location of relay for the glow plugs on a 2001 Nissan Almera Tino?

Answers

These are mounted on the nearside inner wing in the engine bay. They sometimes stick or get corroded and (if not too far gone) can be prised apart and cleaned up. When they play up, it can cause the fuse to blow also, so worth a check. Both these parts are a rip off price at Nissan. Good luck - Kenneth Freer from Lancashire

Hi. The boot on my Nissan Almera Tino won’t stay open. I lift it up (it feels a lot heavier than usual) and if I let go go it will slam shut again... any ideas (and cost to repair)? (SE)

Answers

It turns out this is down to the gas filled tailgate dampers having failed - these are the two support struts connecting the side of the boot to the car. A call to my local Nissan garage told me it’s a five minute job to fix new parts but that they cost £328 for the pair (always change both at the same time to ensure equal wear). A quick search online found several suppliers of the exact same part for £14 each plus VAT one website even included pictures on how to fit the part (remove clips, remove part, insert new part, re-attach clips) - Ben Ziman from England

My Nissan Almera Tino’s windows keep steaming up and the blower won’t clear it. The heater is not great - does anyone know why?

Answers

I’ve had two 51 plate Tinos and had this problem. On the first one, it was the passenger side windscreen always steamed up and on the second, it was the drivers side. For me, both times it was due to a really rubbish foam filter (grey in colour) under the vents at the very front of the dash where it meets the window. On the first car, I managed to push the filter down and out of the way, but on the second one, it was in such a poor state that I just ripped it out (to no massive detriment, nothing’s flown at me yet from the outside!) Hope that helps! - Sam T from Cambridgeshire

The plugs that came with my Nissan are Raduim (BKR5EIX - 11P) NGK. I want to have them replaced but locally I cannot find BKR5EIX - 11P. Nissan Uganda has BKR6EIX - 11P. My question is that can it work with my Tino? Or please can you send me details of all compatible plugs with this Nissan. It’s a petrol engined 1.8-litre Nissan Almera Tino.

Answers

Hi Daniel, The BKR6 are not of the same size as BKR5. The only spark plug you may be able to use is the Denso IK16 Iridium plug. Try Toyota Ug for these. If not available you can easily get them online: Ebay or here - http://www.sparkplugs.com/default.asp - Allan T from Uganda

How do I get the cylinder on the rear brake to go back into the calliper, so I can replace the pads? I have been told that after opening the bleed nipple, you twist the cylinder clockwise as you apply pressure. However I can’t seem to get any turn at all. What am I doing wrong?

Answers

Try inserting pointy nose pliers into the cut outs in the piston snd turn clockwise, a little force may be needed if they are seized - Rob Mattinson from Angus (Forfarshire)

We opened the sunroof for the first time this year but it won’t close. All I hear is a faint clunk each time the button is pressed. I have had to resort to putting a tarpaulin over the car and hope that it doesn’t rain. Hopefully, it isn’t an expensive job as we plan to buy a new car soon and the car isn’t worth much, despite having 28,000 on the clock. Thanks. (SVE)
