I’m trying to enter the security code on the radio of my Nissan Almera and have used up the first three goes. I have the code and have been told how to enter it correctly, but I don’t have many opportunities to leave the car on for 60 minutes waiting for the next chance. Are they any reset "tips" that will take me back to the start (one minute wait is more bearable)? I should add that it is the standard Nissan head unit. Any ideas?

Take off one of the front wheels, and examine the disc, if it looks like one piece of flat metal , then its solid discs, if it looks like 2 flat pieces of metal, sandwiched together, joined every inch, with gaps between, then its vented! Simples!! Iain Muir from Lanarkshire

Hello, I have a problem with my Nissan Almera 1.5, 2004. There is a loss of power and the engine indicator starts to appear and disappear. This happens especially under load and when driving up long steep hills, sometimes I am down to second gear. There are no error codes memorised by the computer. I recently changed the fuel filter and spark plugs but the problem still exists. Can anyone help? (1.5 diesel)

My Nissan Almera`s passenger side front wheel begins to squeak then makes a droning noise. The car seems to slow down very quickly when I take my foot off the accelerator (eg. when approaching roundabouts). I get heat and a smell of burning after long journeys. My local garage have checked the wheel bearings and all is fine. Any suggestions as to what could be the problem? Thank you.

What causes a howling sound to come from the engine of my Nissan Almera? When driving you hear it coming from behind the pedals. When the bonnet is open the noise comes from the left hand side of the engine when facing it, either from the spark plugs or the fan belt or from that general direction. I`m not 100% sure exactly where it`s coming from? Can anyone advise?(1.4)

When it’s cold my 1.5 petrol Nissan Almera starts, but it will stall if you try to drive it and will not start again until it has been left for about a minute. When you restart it you have to be carefull how you use the accelerator because it splutters. When driving it feels like it is miss-firing now and again. If I drive it for about two to three miles, switch it off for about half an hour and come back, it will start and run fine. It seems okay in the warmer weather. The fault is like trying to run an old type car with a choke which isn`t working. It`s driving me crazy. Any ideas? (1.5 petrol)

Hello. When I was giving my partner a driving lesson he strained the gears quite a lot which created a strong burning smell and also stalled a few times. As a result a ’locked’ sign came up on the dash screen and the radio stopped working. The car still came on but now four days after I tried to use the car and it’s totally dead - couldn’t even open the door with the electric key. When the fault initially appeared I checked the electric fuses but they were all okay. Any advice gratefully received!!

At what mileage should you change the timing chain on a 2007 Nissan Almera?
Answers
Hi, I am not an expert, but I own a Nissan Almera and recently had a problem with the ignition coils burning out. I was advised by a local Nissan dealership to check the timing chain for stretch as this is a common problem with this model, they can do this using an electronic analyser to read your car’s ECU unit which reports any faults. I have been told by an experienced mechanic that there is a simple way of checking for yourself. The method requires the engine to be run hot until the choke is off, you then depress the throttle to reach 3000 revs and hold it there for 10 to 15 seconds, if the rev counter needle stays steady the chain has not stretched. If the rev needle fluctuates up and down, it could mean the chain has stretched and should be replaced. Another more accurate DIY way of doing this, is by visual inspection of the timing chain tensioner plunger depth, which should not pretrude more than 10mm. To do this, you will need remove the engine cam cover and plate encasing the timing chain situated on the belt end of the engine, you can then measure the depth of the piston plunger on the tensioner. If this protrudes more than 10mm then the chain should be replaced. I have done this job using a simple socket set, not difficult to do but requires the silicon sealent around the chain cover to be cleaned off and replaced. I hope you find this information helpful - James Turner from Essex

Hi, I’m a bit worried. There is a thin strip of foam protruding from the windscreen demister and there are specks of foam being blown out since it happened. I have wiped the dash down on more than one occasion but two days later the dash will be covered in small specks of this foam. Why has a orange engine light come on on the dash board of my 2003 Nissan Almera?
Answers
Hi, I am not a mechanic but had the same problem with my Almera. The engine warning light coming on could mark a number of problems and I suggest you get it checked by an auto electric mechanic, who will have an electronic analyser to plug into your car’s computer and read the fault code to find the problem. I know that the Almera suffers from stretched timing chain problems, which can alter the timing of the engine. This is an expensive job to do. Other faults could be due to the cam and or crank shaft sensors failing or the ignition coil breaking down. I hope this information is helpful - James Turner from Essex

Hi, the reversing sensors bleep constantly when I put the car in to reverse. I have been told the the sensor box has failed (40,000 miles). Been quoted £350 for a new box (unbelievable price) by main dealer. Where do I find the box? I know it’s somewhere in the boot. Also new tyres only last 16,000 miles on the front. Does anyone else get this mileage on new tyres? Any information truly appreciated. Thanks in advance. (SVE 1.5)
Answers
My 2003 Almera (SVE 1.5) has never given good mileage for front tyres, never better than 30,000 miles. Tracking is worth checking, it seems to get bad with little provocation. Poor tracking has reduced tyre life to less than 10,000 miles. Regarding your reverse sensor box I would recommend a breaker’s yard - Hugh Marsh from Kent

If I use the master button inside at the driver side it open all doors but when I want to close the car I must close the door fist and then I open the door to exit so all the doors getting open. So I close each door every time. Maybe someone know what I have to do? Thanks a lot.

The sensors go on the key fob. If you use the master lock switch on driver’s door to lock all the doors after you have gotten out of car, then just close your driver’s door. Now all doors are secure and to open again use passenger door lock with key and when you open passenger door all doors open. Hope this helps - Shay Fagan from Ireland

I have a 2000 Nissan Almera 1.5 and it keeps cutting out when it gets warm. I have changed the cam and the crankshaft sensors but is still doing the same. Any ideas anyone?
Answers
Hi, I am not a mechanic, but I do know that Nissans suffer from timing chain stretch and you should get this checked out, because if it has, changing the sensors will make no difference. Find a mechanic with a fault code analyser to plug in to your cars ECU which may reveal the problem. I was told by a mechanic that you can try a simple method to test for timing chain stretch as follows. Run the car until hot, depress the throttle to bring it up to 3000rpm and hold it there for 10/15 seconds, the rev counter needle should stay still, if the needle moves up and down it could indicate that the chain is stretched. I have had problems with the ignition coils breaking down on my Almera and it could be yours may doing the same as is a common fault. I also suggest you check that the earth connections between the engine and car body are making a good contact, as this is simple to do. You can also test the earth conection by using a battery jump lead to connect the engine block directly to the negative terminal on the battery. I hope you find this information helpful - James Turner from Essex

The gear stick wobbles, tends to flop to the left, no tension pulling it back to the middle. Is this a major task or could I do this myself?
Answers
I am a mechanic and have 12 years Nissan dealer experience and also own a Nissan Almera (pretty reliable info). What you are describing is a broken spring in the gearbox. If you leave it, the spring will fragment and lock your gearbox between two gears and you will need towing home (as what happened to mine) or remove your box and have it re-coned because a second hand one will be like rocking horse sh*t to find and mine cost £500. My wipers will not stop until the ignition is turned off. Timed operation does not function. Any clues?
Answers
Hi Robert, I had same problem with my ’06 Almera. In my case, it was caused by corrosion on the contacts in the wiper motor, this requires a change of wiper motor. This fault is not uncommon and down to poor design. I wrote to Nissan central office who agreed to pay for the repair if it turned out to be the problem I describe, as indeed it did. Might be worth a try. Hope this helps. Cheers - Peter Trice from Lancashire

I have owned this model for 6 months now but a problem has just arisen. Even after the engine has been running for some time the engine idles at 1,500 rpm for a few seconds then drops to around 1,000 rpm and ticks over perfectly. What could the problem be? (SE)
Answers
My cars does the same thing and it’s not exactly a problem. It’s just simply the electronic system in the car that controls the acceleration and idle speed is probably a little bit off. If you have been driving fast for a bit and then quickly stop, the idle speed will be faster in anticipation of you quickly accelerating again. After a few seconds, it would drop down to save fuel. I hope this applies to your question sir - Finnur Alexandersson from Moray (Elgin) and Nairn Shire

How many hills are you going up and down, what gears will you be in and how fast will you be going. then the fuel consumption figures can be sorted. Hi Alan, initially when I used 4x rewritable speed copied CDs it failed. Thankfully when I tried 52x rewritable speed, it worked. Hope this remedies the situation - Brian from Ireland

The car was not used for a week due to the very cold weather. The temperature at night was sometimes below 10 degrees. After driving not very far away I could smell burnt rubber and a heard noise coming from my front right wheel. The smell also was coming only front the front right wheel. What could it be?
Answers
Your front right brake could be frozen stuck or have rusted stuck over the week. It was probably your tire rubbing along the road and the brakes grinding - Finnur Alexandersson from Moray (Elgin) and Nairn Shire

Is there a recall for the timing chain on this model? I was shocked at how widespread this problem is. Thanks.

Malfunction Indicator shows and sometimes flashes. Why? Is it safe to drive the vehicle? Will it be difficult to put right and how long would it take to take to correct the fault? Would this indicate an engine fault? (G)

The gears are not switching and the speedometer is really high. The car makes a revving sound and then, after awhile, the gear goes in. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

Big problem with the headlamp visiblity with my 05 Almera. Really dangerous to drive in the dark due to this. Should Nissan recall all affected vehicles?
Answers
I have the same problem, I have found out that there was a recall for this problem. It is the headlamp over heating and melting the connections that is causing the lights to dim. I have called the Nissan office and they have said that the recall has finished but if I was to take it to a Nissan garage and let them have a look... and it turns out to be that problem then they can sort something - here is the number: 01923 899334. Tell them there was a recall for this problem and what are they going to do about it. Hope this helps and you get it sorted - Rachael from England

I have only recently noticed that my car smells as if rubber is burning. I investigated to see if perhaps this smell was coming from one of my tyres and it was not. What could possibly be giving off that smell?

Can you please tell me at what mileage the timing belt beeds to be changed? I have the 2004 Almera, may thanks.
Answers
If the car is a petrol 1.5 or 1.8 there is no belt to change, it is a chain on these models (theoretically maintenance free). If it’s a diesel then I’m sorry but I have no experience of that type of Almera - Wayne Simpson from England

I have owned this car for approximately 2 months now. It is R Reg and has about 75000 miles on the clock. Really good nick for its age. I haven’t had any problems as yet until today. I stopped at the shop and it was raining really heavily. When I tried to start the car again it wouldn’t start. It’s not the battery because all the dash lights were on and radio etc. It made a whiring sound like it wanted to start but nothing. We left it for a bit and then it started which is why I’m thinking that the rain has a part to play in it, but it doesn’t sound happy when I start it now. Can anyone advise? I’m completely clueless. It didn’t start and I just panicked. My worst nightmare!
Answers
It is probably that the battery is not quite strong enough - it could be too many short journeys and battery not charging. If the problem persists, buy a new battery as I found over the years, it makes all the difference to a sluggish starter. It’s probably the cheapest way of fixing your problem - Dave Hind from England
Some dealers and garages do cheap jobs and leave the plastic wheel arches and engine covers of the car. Thus when the car is driven in the rain, water will splash up from the road and get in your electrics. Also dust and mud can short fuses (I say this from experience).
