Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis Crewcab 2010

I have the new 3500 mb sprinter 188 hp with 5 speed allison. Is there any reason not to downshift to decelerate to save brake wear? Does it increase fuel consumption rate like a gas engine or not, like an exhaust brake?
