Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2002

Transmission problem. Hi! The car runs fine, goes up and down through gears no problem. However, it randomly goes into emergency running mode. When I turn the car off and restart it there is no problem until next time - which could be whenever (5, 10, 15 miles, who knows?). The F indicator shows on the dashboard. Could be the gear selector module, if so, does anybody out there know how long (in labour time) it would take to replace it. One dealer reckoned 2 days and £1400. Grateful for any feedback!
