Can somebody tell me if the LDV Maxus is good to run a courier company? What are the usual problems?

Answers

For God’s sake, don’t buy one. Biggest bag of sh*t on the road, nothing but trouble - Matthew Jones from Monmouthshire

Sorry, but I disagree with people on this one. We as a wholesale food company bought 5 in 2008, converted into freezer vans. Brilliant vans, can take on anything put at them, wind, snow, ice also well driven by looniticks !! haha The only problem is the electic central locking dies out after a couple of yrs... good vans for this sort of work/business?!! My 2008 LDV Maxus starts fine, runs OK when cold but after about 8-10 miles the battery light flickers and the engine cuts out when I turn the wheel left. Always re-starts. Any ideas?

Hi, I’m thinking of buying a LDV Maxus. Can anyone tell me what they are like on diesel? Are the 2.5 engines thirsty? I can’t seem to find any mention of mpg...

Answers

I have had a Maxus about 5 months, my 2.5 lwb h/r 120 model does a good 31mpg local and around 35 on a run. I would think that for size of van that is quite good - Jeff Jones from Yorkshire

My daughter hired an LDV Maxus and after driving around 80 miles, the clutch suddenly failed. However, the hire company suddenly took a payment of £1000 from my account to pay for the clutch and gear box, as they said it was caused through negligent driving. They claimed that my daughter continued to drive the vehicle after the engine management light came on to indicate a problem with the clutch and gear box. Could you tell me if there is anything on a clutch or gear box that would trigger the engine management light, as it did not come on as they said it did?

Answers

Just another con by the hire companies. When you hire a vehicle in most agreements, you sign to say they can take £1,000 from your bank account if the vehicle comes back unroadworthy due to misuse. My son had the exact same problem when the hired van he was driving stalled in flood water, he abandoned the van and unfortunatley for the hire company it was totally submerged. He kicked up a stink and asked for an independent engineer’s report (which he offered to pay for) to determine the cause of the stalling. The engineer’s report was inconclusive so after taking out a claim in the small claims court they caved in and gave a refund. So kick up a stink, get an independent engineer’s report and if they refuse, they have no defence in court. And to answer the original question: no, the engine management light has nothing to do with the clutch or gearbox unless it was automatic - Bernard Spinal from Warwickshire

Thank you for your answer, Bernard. I intend to take it all the way. Terms and conditions are supposed to be negotiated in a way that is fair to the consumer, as well as the company. I cannot understand how it can be considered legal to change a payment of £100 agreed by chip-n-pin to 10 times the amount, as soon as the customer’s back is turned. The proof that the agreed amount has been changed, is the authorisation codes being identical for the £100 and the £1000. This is not considered fraud by the bank but I think it certainly should be - Geraldine Whelan from England

I bought a new battery for my LDV Maxus and it keeps going flat. Any advice?

Answers

I had the same problem, may be the same cause. Radiator fans stuck on, so quiet you don’t hear them, but they’ll run it flat in 2-3 hours. Not yet solved, but I’m changing the relay and sensor switch, as the fault is intermittant - Paul King from Middlesex

Hi, had the same problem for 2 years but spoke to the dealership and they say battery recommended has been upgraded to 900 amp. Beware in cold weather, van is susceptible to heater plug burnout, (possibly why battery rec. has been upgraded) & relay switch problems. Switch replacement cost me about £200 - Kevin from Durham

I have a Maxus bus which has suffered from battery problems since I bought it 2 years ago. Finally found the alternator is the problem as it was not fully charging the battery. Alternator finally failed yesterday. I advise you get the alternator checked to see what amps are being put into the battery. Finally the vehicle is totally immobile with a fully drained battery - Peter Gausden from Kent
