Ford Transit

Hi, I've got a Transit 100 T350L RWD that's done 91000 miles. Over the last few days I've noticed that when I press the accelerator I get a whirring/whining noise. It doesn't seem to matter what gear I'm in and is more prominent between 2-3k revs. At first I thought it may be the idler pulley or belt tensioner but after lifting the bonnet and having the accelerator pressed it doesn't make the sound. The noise also disappears when I press the clutch down. I've done the regular checks and the oil was pretty low so I've topped that up. Any ideas before I take it to the garage? Any help very much appreciated. Paul

I have a 1997 Ford Transit diesel van. The coolant expansion tank was replaced due to some leakage (old age). Since then I have had two tanks split apart while travelling. On neither occasion was there any indication of overheating and after emergency repairs the engine ran okay. The thermostat was replaced after the first failure. Currently investigating head gasket though symptoms (no overheating) don't point that way. Is this a common failure and have I been unlucky enough to get two dodgy tanks/ Thanks for any thoughts. Peter in Australia

Have 1996 Ford TRansit diesel engine light comes on all time Vehicle wont go over 50 klms per hour Say in Limp mode Replaced Turbo Any suggestions Please

Answers

Had similar problem with our 97 transit diesel van. Ended up disconnecting electronics and fitting a manual fuel distributer pump. No point having your electronic pump overhauled as Ford no longer supply the necessary parts to do that properly. In fact you will find that ford could not care less. Good luck. Peter, Australia Peter Stead from Australia

If engine runs on after turning off the key you have a faulty fuel cutoff solenoid. Turning the key on again promptly kills the motor and after a few times it leaves limp mode. Richard from New Zealand

Recently been having several attempts to get reverse gear. Sometimes goes in 1st go but increasingly 3-4 attempts. Sometimes just hear cogs spinning as I try but eventually it goes in after several tries with the clutch. Is this a clutch problem as it doesn't happen on any forward gears or something more serious ? Some advice would be helpful before I try Fords & hear the inevitable " sorry it's bad news".

I put about 3 litres of 5/30 diesel engine oil in my van instead of 10/30 oil. I ran the van down to Chester and back and now after I started the van a bad noise came from the engine and it cut out. Now it won`t start. Would putting this oil in cause damage?

Answers

If it is a mk6 you should use 5w30 semi synthetic, if it is a mk7 (2006 on) you should use 5w30 fully synthetic you shouldn't be using 10w30 oil at all. Nick from Highland
