Now that LRP fuel has been replaced with unleaded fuel what can I do to fill up my Ford Ranger 3l 1982 lrv? Some advice I received is that my lrv cannot run on unleaded fuel. If so, what can I do or what kind of fuel can I use? According to the handbook I can only use leaded fuel. Can somebody please help me?

Can someone please help me? I have a 1992 Ford Ranger 4.0 v6 which we have recently purchased and we have done a lot of work on it. We replaced the heads, water pump and radiator. We also had a thermostat put in and all of the plugs and wires were also changed. Could someone tell me what is causing it to continue to overheat? Also the idle is very high and it will stay high even after I have revved the engine, it will not drop. Please can somebody help me? (4.0 v6)

I have a 1995 Ford Ranger 4.0 v6. When putting it in reverse, when first starting in the morning, the motor wants to almost die. It has no power. But I can put it in drive and everything is fine. Or turn off truck. After I put it in drive for a minute then go to reverse it takes 10 seconds before it will engage. After I drive it for 5 minutes it goes in R no problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi. I have just bought a 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 px diesel auto. When it is turned on and just at idle it keeps ticking and the idle needle keeps dropping like the car is going to stall. While this is happening, it has a rattling sound in the engine bay. Any ideas why this is happening?

Hi there. I’m from the USA, Philadelphia PA and I own a 1996 Ford Ranger 5 Speed Manual 2.3 litre 4cyc. I have new flywheel, clutch, flexplate, internal and external slave cylinders. New timing belt. All tuned up, runs great. I’m a former shop owner. I rebuilt rear and rear axle seals, new bearings and (I call them spacers in there). Now I just put 1,000 highway miles on it and I’m hearing like a slight hum behind cab, almost a slight grind? The gears feel fine and shifts great lots pep. What should I check because I don’t know the noise?

I just bought a 2006 4x4 Ford Ranger and when I push in on the clutch to shift gears I hear a clunk. I had the garage look at the universal joints and drive shift. They said they looked fine and the noise I am hearing is common for Rangers. Has any had this problem? And did you find out what the problem was?

In a matter of weeks, my truck destroyed two sets of flywheels and starters. When the ignition key engages, the engine "jumps back". Apparently, this causes the starter and flywheel teeth to grind. My mechanic cannot determine the cause of the "jump back". He thought that it might be the timing. His examination and testing, however, proved the engine properly timed. What to do now puzzles him. Does anyone have any ideas?

Just sold my Fourtrak a few weeks ago, not a good day. However, it had to go. I’ve just invested in the above. From the start, losing power, the wee coil flashing. You just couldn’t put the toe down. Nice yoke, good drive, go easy on the peddle and you’ll save on gas. 70 odd grand miles. I had it back in garage for the third time the other day after 2-3wks (on hols for wk and bit) to get this power thing sorted. I was told by someone else that it may be the airflow sensor... but judging from all the forum chat maybe injection pump. Anyway, maybe I should leave it back as I am still in the money back guarantee period, lol, I don’t know. But she’s a great jeep at that, I’ve pulled a 1.3ton woodchipper occasionally, grand no bother (as I’ve had a few fourtraks before - no, that’s not much of comparison as they could have pulled the jeep and chipper). Anyway, anyone any thoughts? It would be much appreciated (XLT)

Two questions: How many miles per gallon and is it reliable?

Answers

I bought my 2007 (37000 miles) Ranger in 2010 on the strength of what my employers Ranger had taken and survived in his hands/feet. My Ranger, a Thunder, has given me a maximum of 39mpg (17.5 litres used between a full tank and refilling after covering 154.5 miles), the 17.5 litres being divided by 4.454 gives a more accurate calculation as opposed to using and guessing with the fuel gauge alone. But travelling at 65 mph for long distances on the motorway with two horses in a trailer?! Can give you a fuel consumption figure somewhere between 18 an 22 mpg!! With a light foot and a sensible driving attitude 30 -35 is about average, although steady A-road and motorway work at no more than a steady 70 - 80mph still returns up to 33mpg. They’re great trucks but just don’t have that ’favourite slippers/work gloves’ feel that my 110 Land Rover has, but I do really like it - Adrian Davies from Swansea

The truck keeps jumping out of 5th gear - local dealer says it’s not a warrenty job and wants me to pay full price for repair. I have never towed with it and only done 30,000 miles. Anyone else had similar problems? (Thunder)

Answers

I have had my Ranger XLT from new since March 2007. I regularly serviced it with Ford: filters etc. Just last week it has started to jump out of fifth gear. The dealer wants £272 plus VAT to have a look as it is out of warranty. Never towed anything and done 77,000 miles, mainly motorway. Disgrace. Apart from this problem the vehicle is fantastic - Kevin Pyle from England

My Ranger 2008 at 18 months old started jumping out of fifth gear and Ford replaced the fifth gear. The mechanic stated it was a fault that he had come across with the vehicle! - Lesley Thompson-Storr from Yorkshire

I have a 2003 d/cad 2.5. I’ve had it for 4 years and it’s never let me down except now. It has had starting problems: I changed glow, fuel filter etc... but the power drops amd the revs go high and the rev counter flips reapidly betwen 2/ 4 rpm. Everyone has tried to diagnose it - any suggestions? It has only done 100k and I spent a fortune on the body work and chassis as I wanted to keep it. Should I get rid of it now or keep having it looked at until they find the problem?
