The car alarm keeps coming on after a hot day when it 'cools' in the evening. All the doors are closed and windows fully up, NO obstruction to the boot. I heard it can be an issue with latch assembly on the bonnet which has a sensor? Any ideas how to turn off the alarm or disable permanently without immobilising the car and spending loads?

Hi- Ihave a mondeo mk2 2.0 16v zetec..at around 1500-2000 revs- about 45-50 mph,it starts missing. I've replaced coil pack, leads, plugs, etc, but still does it. I've been told that it could be fuel sensor, then someone else told me they rarely go wrong. Also,on start up when it's warm,it revs to about 1500 revs, then drops really low-almost stops, then revs again, then drops, then idles normally-any ideas?

Heater hose blew off, steam coming from under bonnet , car did not overheat, (thermostat is ok) been advised to have water pump checked, although computer showed no sign of trouble with the water pump...are there any other symptoms which would tell me what caused this please... many thanks...

Answers

Linda, there could be a blockage somewhere but there could also be a problem with the water pump.. thing is.. garages say "didn't show up on the diagnostics"... well.. a water pump is mechanical and a fault in it won't necessarily show up on electronic diagnostics... there has been a tendency lately for people to consider the computer diagnostics as the dogs thingies.. and it can be.. in the right situation. You may still have issue with water pump. However, pressure building up high enough in cooling system to blow a hose potentially could be a sign of head gasket failure.. the high pressures built up in cylinders leaking into the cooling channels which are very close by. The cooling fans are not working on my Mondeo and it is overheating. Have checked fuses and they are fine. Before the fans stopped working I had noticed that when the fan was working it was very loud

Answers

Rachel, it sounds like the bearings in the fan may have gone. with the engine off.. try manually turning the fan blade around and see how much resistance there is.. if it grinds and/or shows resistance to turning then that's it. The fan should turn around freely and smoothly. R Evans from Caerphilly

Flat Battery . Needs recharging or jump leads.... bruck morton from Suffolk

Bruck thinks you have a flat battery.. (maybe defective) symptoms are consistent with that, but could also be loose connection somewhere.. test the battery voltage before doing anything else.. with all in OFF position it should be around 12.4 at the terminals, but over 12v. (If under 12v then you should change the battery) If already over 12v, try jumping it and if it works and gets the engine running, test the voltage across the battery with it running in order to test alternator output.. should be around 13.5-14v.. if it IS, then alternator is fine and battery defective. A discharged battery can be recharged and work fine for a while.. but if it is defective it is not likely to retain charge and will go kaput sooner or later.. do you want to risk being in the middle of nowhere and that happen? If your battery and alternator testing all come up fine then it could be connections to the starter motor or more likely the starter motor itself. R Evans from Caerphilly

I have had an issue with the engine overheating, an overflow pipe blew from radiator to the back of the engine, my mechanic feels that I have an issue with gasket, as too much pressure is building up and water flying out of coolant, he put some liquid in to see if this could seal any blocks but I haven't heard yet whether this worked, would it be better to replace whole engine or get head gasket refurbished if that didn't work.

Hi there-do you pump your foot on the pedal when starting it? When you come to a stop-e.g. traffic lights, etc, does the engine run at high revs? Would like to see your foot on the pedal...it might be that the linkage is sticking,or a sticking cable... Lloyd from Essex

There is no throttle cable etc. as it's "fly by wire" get vehicle code read or could be faulty throttle pedal as it's electronic martin from Essex

Answer this question

Richard Stephens, Pembrokeshire

Ford Mondeo

I have a ford mondeo 2.0 tdci . it has done 83000 miles .it is a 2004 model . Running well except when the engine has warmed up and I stress not before when the accelerator pedal is first applied only slightly the engine pulls back (coughs would poss describe it ) and when more throttle is applied she accelerates as normal . I have fully serviced the car and changed the egr valve with no improvement .apart from this the car is running very well . Can you help please.

Answers

You say that you've changed the egr valve.. have you told the ECU that you've got a new egr?.. In several cases the ecu will need to be told that there is a new component.. egr valve, turbo, high pressure fuel pump are to name a few.. the ecu will need to learn how to communicate with the egr and understand the output messages from the egr so it can make its correct adjustments to fuel supply. The issue might also be related to turbo lag. R Evans from Caerphilly

Hi R Evans thanks for your reply makes sense but my ear valve is one with no electrical sender or connection so how in this case does the ecu communicate with the erg do I still have to tell the ecu and if I do how ? Thanks Richard Stephens from Pembrokeshire

Answer this question

Katrina MacLean, Stirling

Ford Mondeo

Car was bought new in 2013 and has been regularly serviced at a Ford garage, the last service in August. It now has 22,000 miles on the clock. Recently, the oil light has started flashing on starting the engine. We topped up the oil but it continues to flash on starting the car. It goes off after a few miles. Should we consult the garage? And is this a common problem with this type of car?

Answers

On some vehicles the oil light will flash to tell the driver that OIL needs change.. a bit bizarre really when this is mainly indicated by a service light on most modern vehicles. Could be that it needs reset.. however, it could also indicate a fault in the oil pressure.. isn't the car still under warranty??? 2yrs old ?? R Evans from Caerphilly

Thanks for your response. The car was purchased in August 2013 so will not be within the 2 year warranty. I should have said the service oil light appears - red with a spanner. It just seems odd that the mileage is fairly low and an oil change/top up would have been done in August at the last service. Just need some reassurance as neither my husband or I have a lot of mechanical knowledge. Hope you or somebody else can advise. Thanks for your help Katrina MacLean from Stirling

The garage that serviced it may not have reset the service light... and it has now clocked up enough miles to activate.. Your car, albeit a clever piece of machinery.. does not detect that the service has been done .. a mechanic will have to tell it.. by resetting the 'clock' in the car's brain. If you had your first year's service at abt 10k miles and it was reset.. the car's brain will think it is due a service 12k miles later.. i.e. 22000 miles... check your handbook for service interval for your engine.. and the mileages when services carried out.. the maths may calculate just about right... if they do.. take it back to garage and tell them.. THEY FORGOT to reset the service light.. don't pay for it then !! And when your next service is done.. remind the garage before to reset it.. and check after, that they have, R Evans from Caerphilly

Many thanks for all the helpful replies especially R.Evans from Caerphilly. I phoned the garage where the car was originally purchased and regularly serviced. A very helpful gentleman from the service department gave me simple instructions over the phone - depress the brake and accelerator at the same time, switch on ignition and keep feet on pedals for 20 seconds before releasing them. Switching off the ignition, the display showed that the oil service light had been reset. So all sorted, thanks to the advice I received from this excellent website. Thanks also to Peoples Ford of Falkirk who were only too happy to advise me. Katrina MacLean from Stirling

Katrina, glad you're sorted. Happy days.. and thank you for your kind words. R Evans from Caerphilly

Many many thanks to you! A wee bit of knowledgeable help goes a long way. Happy New Year! Hopefully we have no future issues with the car but should a problem occur, at least we can get some helpful, intelligent advice from you, R Evans! Sault!!! Katrina MacLean from Stirling
