Is this a good car for my first car? Secondly what is it like up hills and over long distances?
Laura, Gloucestershire

Ford Ka 2011

I am thinking of getting a Ford Ka 1.2 for my first car and I have two questions. Firstly is this a good car for my first car? Secondly what is it like up hills and over long distances as I go to and around Wales a couple of times a year and there are some quite big hills? If this is not a car for hills etc I quite like the new Corsa and Fiesta S - are they any good? Thanks.

Answers

My 2003 KA has been a lovely car for my first year, did well travelling to Cornwall from Derbyshire, hasn’t had any running problems to date (fingers crossed). Can deal with hills alright but isn’t going to compete with newer and faster cars at pulling off, drove mine up many hills during the snow this year and it kept it’s grip and helped me get home. Go for quality for your first car, try and spend as much as you can to get the best you can and don’t just settle for the first you find. Read through all of the MOT history (if the car doesn’t have it, do not have that car) and find out what advisory notes it’s had previously, ask for service history and read everything they have done to it. Good luck finding your perfect first car. Take a man with you who knows what he’s talking about, preferably someone who is mechanic based as they can look at the mechanic side of things instead of what you will see - Lauren from Derbyshire

Hi. My Ford Ka is around 14 years old, it is a petrol model and has done around 112,500 miles. It is due an MOT about halfway through May. However it has a rusted hold in the floor of the boot that is right in the corner. You can clearly see straight through. Is it worth trying to get it repaired to pass it`s MOT or to look at getting another car? I’ve had it since August/September and only paid £450 for it. Is it worth trying to get it fixed, or should I just look at another car when I can only afford cars under £1000? Any suggestions please? Many thanks.

I changed the thermostat on my Ford Ka. When I reattached the hoses the bottom hose has a slight bit of moisture where it connects to the thermo housing when the engine`s warmed up. The rest of the seal seems fine. Will this be okay as is? Also I removed the hose to the lower radiator to drain the. On the plastic pipe where the hose is attached there are two plastic ridges on top and bottom of the radiator pipe. I take it the hose doesn`t go over these as I have attached the hose flush to these with jubilee clips? I hope these questions make sense as it`s the first time I`ve attempted any work on a car? Cheers guys.

I have a 2002 Ford Ka with an Enduro-e engine. In traffic the car overheated, the red light came on and the radiator fan was not working. I removed the switch so the fan runs continuously but it`s still overheating in traffic. The top hose is hot but not the bottom hose. I replaced the thermostat, even though when I tested the old thermostat it worked. Neither the air conditioning nor the heater work. From the outside the heater valve looks okay and no water leaks around it. If the heater valve is not working would this prevent water from circulating? The car is not losing water. Any ideas please?

My brand new Ford Ka has done less than 100 miles. The user`s manual tells us how to isolate the stop/start feature which we have done because we don’t want to use it. Does the system default back to the operation of this facility once the ignition is switched off, which means you have to go through the process of isolating it again before start up, or should the original isolation remain in place until you reset the same in accordance with the user`s manual?

My daughter has a Ford Ka bought new in 2011. Recently she switched the engine off and then later lights started flashing and it would not start. She got the RAC out who said it was the electrics. Ford are saying a leaking windscreen had damaged the ignition electrics (factory fitted windscreen). The car is not quite 2 years old and has always been serviced by Ford. Is this a common fault and should it be covered under her warranty?

Hi. I drove my car about 7 miles tonight and just as I pulled up to my house loads of steam started coming out of the bonnet. I have opened it up and there is loads of steam and water under the bonnet. Both of the pipes have come off - so there is no water in the car what soever - if i top it up it just pours out of the pipes. I can’t even reconnect them as the metal bit on the end of them where they connect seems to have eroded. could my head gasket of gone? Or why has this happened?

We are getting fobbed off by Ford, please can anyone help? My wife has a Ford Ka 1.2 grand prix bought brand new and we have had lots of problems with it, but the main one is fuel consumption. It`s been back to Ford and we`ve got nowhere. They`ve asked us to do a mileage check so we did. One full tank`s mileage was showing 6370. After a couple of weeks driving to and from her workplace the red light is now showing on the dashboard to indicate we need to refuel, mileage is now showing 6574, a measly 204 miles. This is miles and miles away from what is advertised on their website. My wife is a careful driver and the car tells you when to change up or down through the gears, it also has the stop/start facility. Pease can anyone advise us? (1.2 grand prix)

My Ford Ka has started to cut out, it happened twice today. First when parking - I thought I had stalled, but then it happened again 3 times. Once parked I turned it on again to see how it sounded, it shuddered and then stopped again twice. I then left it for an hour and it seemed to be okay. I then drove it for 3 miles without any problems, parked, turned the engine on to check and it cut out. No engine lights came on, there is oil and water and fuel. I had a problem with the coil pack last year but this doesn’t seem to be the same! I hope someone can help and I obviously need to go on a car maintenance course! Any ideas please? Thanks. (54 reg)

I am looking for a rough price for these things to get fixed. 1) Offside Headlamp damaged but light output not reduced. 2) Front (nearside and offside) Anti-Roll bar linkage worn but not seriously weakened. 3) Front (nearside and offside) macpherson strut has slight movement at the upper attachment. 4) Rear (nearside and offside) Suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement. 5) Power steering pipe(s) or hose(s) slightly corroded. 6) Front lower (nearside and offside) suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement. The thing that got me is that on the inside of the Oil filler is the Mayo known to be the bi product of the head gasket failure.
Sean Petty, Sussex

Ford Ka 1999

A family member of mine has asked me to have a look at her Ford Ka, T reg 1999 model. It`s just clicked over 56K miles and had the cambelt replaced last year. I have had a quick look over the car, and it seems to run a tad roughly. The thing that got me is that on the inside of the Oil filler is the "Mayo", known to be the bi product of the head gasket failure, but on closer inspection once I had taken the rocker cover off I found that the "mayo" was only in the 1 location where the oil filler cap is, and nowhere else. I had also noticed that the oil filler cap had a breather pipe from the airbox, so I checked in there for water, but found nothing. Condensation maybe? So just to clarify - I found mayo on the inside of the oil filler cap and the inside of the rocker cover where the 2 join each other. The oil on the dipstick shows I ran it for 20 minutes watching for a drop, but there is a breather hose connected from the airbox to the oil cap. Any suggestions? (1.3 Sohc)

Answers

On most modern engines it is quite common to get condensation in the breathers and the ’mayo’ emulsion on the filler or even in the breathers. It could be a blocked breather, but is usually because the car does a lot of short journeys and doesn’t warm up fully each time, which would get rid of the condensate. Clean off the cap, and check the breather pipe is not blocked. If the head gasket had gone, you would notice it on the dipstick, possibly inside the rocker cover too. It would also be losing water or would have oil/fuel by products in the header tank - Colin from Kent

My Ford Ka has recently started hunting or jerking lightly after a cold start...
Martin Van Schalkwyk, South Africa

Ford Ka 2006

Good day, my Ford Ka has recently started ’hunting’ or ’jerking’ lightly after a cold start and driving about 20-40km/h in second or third gear. It disappears slightly after the engine has reached operating temperature but never seems to disappear completely. I took it to the dealer, but they could not find any problems, even a ECU scan reported no problems. Furthermore, my fuel economy became so bad, I only get 350km on a 40L tank. I have replaced the following: Throttle Position Sensor, MAP sensor, Upper and lower oxygen (Lambda) sensors, ignition coil pack plus the ignition leads and spark plugs. I even replaced the catalytic converter at a very costly price. I had the computer reset about 50 times, but still the problem stays. When it idles, it idles perfectly, you can rev it up and the engine stays running perfectly. When idling you can smell the exhaust gases are rich. It`s also got a loss in power and, in 20-30km/h winds, I can hardly reach 120km/h flatout. I`ve had the car for 7 years from new and it was perfect before this happened. Any suggestions, as I`ve spent a lot of money already on sensors etc?

Answers

I had the same problem, and the idle seemed fine. I replaced coil, leads, plugs etc but this didn’t help. Took the idle control valve off and sprayed inside with some cleaner, it now runs like new. It didn’t even seem too dirty inside the sensor but a little bit of dirt made a huge difference to the engine - William from Lincolnshire

The radiator fan on my Ford Ka was not coming on...
Stayce White, South Africa

Ford Ka

The radiator fan on my Ford Ka wasn’t coming on. I checked everything and my dad then replaced the fan relay. The car started with no problem, then the next time we wanted to use the car, it wouldn’t start. The aircon light remains on and the clock light blinks constantly. Any ideas on what to do? When you turn the ignition on the lights come on but when you turn the key to start the car everything goes off and the engine won’t turn over. Please help?

Answers

My KA had a similar problem regarding the fan relay that caused the fan to run continiously. It sounds like you should take your KA in to a Ford Dealer to have the computer reset. Or it could be your key, remember, the Ka is fitted with a PATS immoboliser system. If the key’s programming is lost, it would turn the igniton on, but it would not turn over (Start). So my best advice is, take it to a Ford Dealer, definitely either a ECU problem or Immoboliser... Martin van Schalkwyk from South Africa

When I fill my Ford Ka`s windscreen reservoir only the back window works but the holes aren’t blocked. Is it a separate reservoir? (Titanium)

Answers

Hi, this happened on my old ka, if you look under the bonnet there are two rubber pipes that lead fron the reservoir (you have to take the bottom windscreen protector off- easy job). One goes to the back, the other to the front along the edge of the bonnet, if the pipe to the front is trapped you can just free it and hey presto! If like mine it had a hole, you can go to scrapyard, get one for 50p and change it - easy job if that’s what the problem is - sportka now! from Yorkshire

Undo the bottom hose to the radiator and undo header tank lid and allow to empty. When empty flush by pouring warm water first then hot water afterwards to clean through. Then reattach hose and fill system. Always mix antifreeze at a ratio of 3 parts water to 2 parts antifreeze then you will know it is protected for winter - Si from Essex

My Ford Ka has no dashboard back light illumination. The fuse which feeds is okay as this also serves the side light and the lights on the buzzer when the door is opened. The speedo and fuel gauges are okay as well and also the dashboard indicators, like the mangement lights, come on okay when turning the ignition on. This is an intermittent fault, but the back lights will come on when driving, not when going over bumps etc. Could this be an earth problem or ECU? Any ideas would be welcome.

Julie, England

Ford Ka 2005

My Ford Ka`s tripometer keeps resetting itself. The car runs okay and starts okay, but it seems to reset itself when the engine is switched off. What can I do?

Answers

I had the same problem with my 2003 Ford KA collection. Every time I turned the ignition on the trip would reset itself to zero and the speedo fuel dials would sweep. Then one day the engine would not start, the engine would turn over briskly but not fire up. Thinking it was possibly a relay fault I had it transported to my local gararage as you are not allowed to tow in Spain. A diagnostic was carried out which came up with battery fault, I could not believe this as the battery turned the engine over so briskly. However a new battery was fitted and the problem was resolved. I can only summise that a cell was down giving insufficent power output. I hope this is of help - Gerry from Spain

I’ve just bought a KA, and if you have a manual you’ll find that you can set the computer to beep over a speed you can select from 30 mph. You should be getting a message flashing on the instrument panel stating "speed limit exceeded". The idea being you set your own speed limit. Most probably the cause for this will be the light switch itself. With the ignition set at pos 0 if none of the side lights work (front & rear) I would try a switch - Andy from England

The engine management light came on in my 2004 Ford Ka but it still seemed to be running okay. A few days later I tried to start it and it sort of fired up for a second but cut straight out again, so I tried it again but it just didn`t sound right. The local garage said that they ran a test on it and it came up as the fault being the camshaft sensor. Does this sound about right?

Hi there. I want to buy a black 1999 plate Ford Ka which has done 104,000 miles and has an MOT until 03/2013. What normally starts to go wrong with a Ford Ka when it has been driven more than 100,000 miles?

Answers

I`ve had my Ka 05 plate for seven years, now at 65,000 mileage , even though it’s cheap to run , repair bills can be a lot even for the little Ka. Light bulbs are a problem, you`re forever changing them and the headlamps are a nightmare. Check for rust, especially the fuel filler cap, sills, doors, practically everywhere as it`s poorly put together - Suze from Derbyshire

What is the button on the dashboard of my Ford Ka with an A and an arrow around the A for? I can`t find it in the handbook. Any suggestions?

Answers

I have this too and it means that your model is fitted with the Stop/Start option. Look on the dashboard and you will see the A button there which is illuminated on the screen when activated and comes up in red next to the gear shift indicators to say you should be using the option. My Ka is just two weeks old - Val Pacey from France

It’s the Stop/Start function button. Suggest you trial it to get used to it as you think the engine has died. With this function the engine cuts out automatically when you stop, say at traffic lights to cut the emissions and stop fuel waste. You simply press on the clutch and it re-starts the motor again. It also lights up on the trip computer next to the indication light to change gear to say you should be using the system. It’s well described in the handbook and when I bought my Ka two weeks ago the lady in charge of new deliveries spent half an hour going over everything with me as is the policy here. I have a noise like a ringing/howling which appears to be coming from the nearside rear wheel of my Ford Ka. It only happens when I`m driving about 20 miles and the engine gets warm. I have dropped it quickly into the garage who said that it`s not the wheel bearings. When it`s cool there is no sound to be heard. My 1.3 04 Ford Ka has been a nightmare for overheating. After replacing the thermostat, water pump, header tank and fan temperature switch it seemed to be fine. Three months on and I have the same problem but worse. I have no water in my oil, or any other main signs of head gasket failure, but I thought that maybe there were some airlocks or blockages in the system or radiator. I bought an almost new radiator from a local broker`s. When I got it home I noticed that it has a third outlet/hose, unlike mine. What is the third outlet for? I also have bubbles in my header tank and a mud-like substance on the inner walls. I`m hoping that it`s a blockage in the system but think it could be a cooked head. Can anyone help me?

All bulbs tested and are OK. There is a voltage supply at the fuse box when the stalk switch is operated, but no voltage at either rear bulb holder? Any ideas?

My Ford Ka had a problem with the starter, but I did not replace it as I did not have the money to do so, now the car can’t start unless you push it and all the warning lights come on at the same time (abs, battery, airbags) the speedometer. I also lose power and then it comes back on. Tonight, when we push started it started but as soon as we put the lights on the car died, and we now struggle to just get the car to idle. Can someone please tell me what the problem can be and how to fix it as I don’t have money to go to the dealership :(

Hi, can anybody help? My Ford Ka showed a yellow warning light and was shuddering. I was advised by a Ford garage that I needed a new clutch and a bearing in the gear box. This was repaired only 8 days ago but the warning light is now showing and my Ka has now cut out totally and has been towed to the garage today. The garage has suggested a new sensor fitting but they think it may be the main ECU which is too expensive to repair. Do you think it is just the sensor or another problem? They did their diagnosis test and cannot be sure? Please help. Thanks.

Hi. I have a Ford Ka Collection 2001 which has had very few problems over the years. However, in the last few months the FM radio signal cuts out on all stations, to become ’fuzzy’. This is intermittent, and sometimes the stations will stay on for 5 -10 minutes with full signal, before going off for the rest of the day. I tried fitting a new aerial and this did not solve the problem. I also checked the cables at the back of the radio in case something had come loose, all of which are secure on the unit. Has anyone experienced anything like this before and can offer advice for a solution? Thanks in advance.

Jane White, Sussex

Ford Ka 2003

Hi, my daughter just bought a 2003 Ford Ka which she thinks is great but has complained that the gearstick sometimes "lifts up". I had a look and what happens is that the stick can be lifted up and out of the gearbox with little effort. It is pushed back in easily but what is missing or broken to allow this to happen? (1.3)

Answers

You are not actually pulling the gear lever out of the gearbox as it is a transverse setup. Sounds like just a lever problem, get a garage to look at it to tell you what’s wrong and if too expensive buy a second hand unit. There are plenty of Kas in breakers - Martin Jones from Essex

Hi, your gearstick is only a stick in a cup. If you look inside where the bottom of the stick is, you will see a rod from left to right. One end of the rod has lost the holding circlip just pop the stick back in where you would have it go. It is very simple. If the bar or the clip or the holder is broken, go to your local scrapyard and get another, cheap as chips and dad looks good - Pauly Milburn from Yorkshire

She pulled over and called out the RAC, who towed her to her hotel, had a good look around and tried to start again and then everything was okay. The RAC worker drove around a while and returned to say he didn’t know what it was and suspected it could be the release bearing. Lynn James, South Africa

Ford Ka 2007

I have a 2007 Ford KA. I recently hit a pot hole and had to have my two front tyres replaced and my front right mag repaired. When my new tyres were put on, the car did sound different - almost like the bearings were gone. But that soon went away and a new problem emerged ... whilst driving, when I am in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears it sounds like I am 3rd. The noise is getting louder, so someone suggested it may be the exhaust. I had this checked and whilst it did have a tiny hole which was patched, the noise is still there. When I slow down, it disappears. However, when I am in 3rd, 4th, 5th, the noise is constant - even with the clutch in or when changing gears. I don’t know if it is related to the new tyres / rim repair which was done, but thought I should mention it.

My Ford Ka sport 1.6 has recently had a new thrust bearing and clutch. The clutch has recently stop working and has lost all of its fluid. The fluid is leaking out of the gear box. Has the mechanic made a boo boo putting the new clutch and thrust bearing in!?!

Answers

That is a faulty thrust bearing, known as a concentric. It is a hydraulic bearing and your clutch fluid would leak underneath between engine and gearbox - Martin Jones from Essex

I have a 2002 Ford Ka and the battery warning light comes on and it over revs when coming to junctions but this only happens when the warning light is on. I have replaced my old Ford battery with a new battery but the problem is still occurring. What could this be?

Answers

Hi, check your connection to the alternator as sometimes the cables goes brittle and break, so now and again will make the light on the dash flicker. If it is broken, do not go to Ford for a new one as they only sell the whole loom to a reliable scrappy - Julian Kingsland-Bonshor from Somerset

I purchased a new Ford Ka Style petrol 1.2 model in November 2009 and it has done 6700 miles and I have estimated that it is only doing 35 miles to the gallon. It has mainly been driven on A roads, keeping at around 45 mph. I have so far contacted Ford themselves and taken it in to a main Ford GK dealership with no positive answers as to why the consumption is so low. They have suggested driving without the heater or radio on to see if any improvement occurs. Bearing in mind it is winter. I would appreciate any feed back as to why the consumption is so low when Ford state it should be in the region of 55 mpg for the type of run involved.

Yes they do, don’t worry, they need quite a push to budge but you won’t break them :) Benny from England

Have had similar problem with my 59 plate Ka, suggest checking out the hose from the rocker box to air filter. This proved to be split along the seam, causing fumes to be drawn into the car via the heating system. The hose has been replaced under warranty for me today. Hope this helps - Carolyn Dickenson from Cheshire

The same thing happened to my 50 plate Ka. I’ve had a range of faults since buying it so beware - the petrol hose had split, the entire ABS system needed to be replaced, as did my drive shaft. I’m shocked at the rubbish quality from a brand new car, and all I’m told is - well we will fix it under warranty - what’s the problem? Jenni Owen from England
