When I go to my Ford Focus in the morning to start her she starts, but when I put my foot on the gas to move off she dies. If I start her again she does it again. I have to give her high revs to get going but after that she is fine. Also this morning she did it 3 or 4 times. I wonder if anyone could help me please?

I have a 2000 Ford Focus. When I push in the clutch and turn the key sometimes it starts and sometimes it does nothing. I have changed the button for the clutch but it still does it. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Hi all, I`m wondering if you could help? My 1.4 Ford Focus has recently (out of the blue) developed two problems. 1) The key will not turn all the way to start the car - the electrics all come on but it seems it gets jammed and won`t turn after that. This comes and goes, at times it`s fine and will start at first turn but then at times it won`t, even after 50 attempts and I have to jump start the car. (The alternator has been checked and this is fine). My second problem is the car is now missing. As well as missing the engine light is on and at times the car door light flashes, as well as the speed needle going crazy and jumping around. The spark plugs have been cleaned and some stuff has been put in the fuel tank to get rid of any dirt in there. Can anyone suggest any other clues as to what it could be? Many thanks for any help.

My Ford Focus starts okay but then as you move off there`s no acceleration. If I pump the accelerator there`s nothing, but then all of a sudden it revs up and seems fine. We know the car has a cracked oil sump and are waiting for the sump. Would this cause this problem of having no power? I`ve been advised to let the service check the coil pack, if defective replace it with the original Motorcraft product. The car is a diesel and I had the pump fixed but it`s still doing it. No warning lights are lighting on the dashboard. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Hi Lisa, First of all, I apologize because I answered your first question, thinking that your Focus is petrol. The issue was not referred to the type of fuel. Now I know that it’s a diesel. This is a common problem after years of using diesel car. Thus, a workshop has to check throttle sensor, and diesel injectors. Most likely, the injectors have to be cleaned, and probably to be recalibrated - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

My Ford Focus battled to start on Thursday but I got it started and went home. The next morning the engine turned as normal but didn’t start at all. After checking all of the fuses I got in and turned the key as normal after the buzzer went off and boom it started. I took it to my work today and it started normally at work. I did an oil/filter change and it started normally for the trip home. I stopped to put in fuel and then it battled to start, but I got it going after revs went up to 2000rpm, it died, started again and died. Third time it started as normal. What can be causing this problem please? Thanks. (2.0 duratex)

My Ford Focus 51 plate cuts out all of the time. The battery light comes on and the speedo drops off. It does it for a while, then nothing for about a week and then it does it again. I then have to stop and restart the car and then it`s fine. Any clues what to do anyone?

My Ford Focus` 15amp fuse which relates to the fuel pump keeps blowing. The garage has said that they just need to put a bigger fuse in it, like a 25amp. I am not happy with this and I am looking for advice as to whether this is possible or is it going to create more problems? Thanks in advance. (Zetec)
Answers
Right. More powerful fuse is bad solution. Fuel pump fuse is 15A (colour: blue) and should stay the same rating. Garage has to check the fuel pump controller and wires and connections related to the fuel pump and the pump itself. Also has to check the charging (up to 14.2V); a faulty alternator can cause overcharging, pump gets more power throughout the fuse and fuse keep blowing - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

I have a 2008 diesel Ford Focus. When I got it first (it was two years old), the "mileage remaining" indicator showed that on a full tank there were 640 miles in the tank, give or take. Now, three years later, when I fill the tank the mileage remaining indicator shows 530 miles in the tank. Is this a problem with the indicator, or does sediment build up in the tank reducing the amount of fuel it can take. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi, the engine light in my Ford Focus is on, however I don’t know if this is due to a flat battery. I changed the battery and it went off, then came on again after driving for about half an hour. Is it on because of this or could it be a worse problem? The car won`t let me go over 5000 revs. Is this a limiter the car has because the engine warning light is on? Thanks. (st 170)

First of all, check IMRC (Inlet Manifold Runner Control). Also check the coil pack (bobbin) and finally check the fuel pump - be sure to replace the fuel filter. All of this should be done in a Ford workshop. Ultimately, it could be contamination in the fuel tank which needs cleaning - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

Hi, I have a 55 plate 1.6 Zetec Ford Focus. The problem I have is when I put the key in the ignition the electrics in the car take about 30 seconds to activate. I can also start the car straight away wih no problem but the electrics in the car still take about 30 seconds to work. By electrics I mean the dash cluster windows and cd player. Also my cd player has stopped working completely. The weird thing is that the heaters work as well as the lights behind the heaters and the interior light. Any help on this situation would be gratefully received. Does anyone have any ideas? (1.6 Zetec)

Hey mate. You need to replace the fuse for the power to other electrics (fuse 68 I think) it sounds like the symptoms ie red shift light on dead instrument cluster and radio - it normally comes on after 15 seconds. Regards - Richard Grigg from England

Hi. My Ford Focus has a 1.4L engine and has done 45,000km and for the last 5000km I can hear a strange rattle from the engine when it`s cold when you lift the throttle. Then when it warms up it`s very hard to hear. Now it`s started to rattle when you are on constant revs (like 2000rpm) and it is coming from the bottom of the engine. Then when it`s warm you can hear it only if you lift the throttle from 2100rpm to 800. Also I`ve noticed that if you rev the engine and suddenly remove the ignition key, so the engine slows down by itself, the sound cannot be heard. Oil has been changed and the spark plugs too but the sound did not change. It does not make any difference if the clutch is on or off. It is engine related, that I know. It sounds like a piston knocking but it doesn`t go away with a warm engine, it`s there but not that loud. Can anyone help me out? (Trend)

When I put my Ford Focus into reverse it takes a few seconds to engage and then it bumps into the gear. The orange engine light is on before the engine starts up and when the engine starts up. After a few seconds another orange light comes on which is in the shape of an exploding star type thing and they both stay on. Can anyone suggest what is wrong? (Automatic 1.6)

READ YOUR HANDBOOK!!!! The orange engine management light tells you there’s a fault which needs to be diagnosed & fixed. The orange ’cog’ light is a transmission warning lamp: There’s a transmission fault which means that the gearbox has gone into an ’emergency’ program, and gear changes will be harsh & speeds will be limited. Your car needs to be taken to a decent, independent garage for diagnosis, but be prepared for a shock: The automatic transmission in these cars is horrendously fault prone and repairs, where possible, are expensive... Why don`t Ford put a drain plug in the sump for the automatic gear box on my Ford Focus? When you have to drain it down as I did it was not easy. I was thinking of putting one into it myself //welding in a half inch socket and fixing in a plug. Would I encounter any problems by doing this or is there a reason they do not put one in, other than possible leaks? Thank you. (4 speed automatic 1.6)

My radio "pops" off and on periodically. It is worse in the morning and when I break or hit a bump. On occasion it is so bad the clock resets to 1200 and when it does come back on it switches to AM from FM. I cannot go even short distances without losing the radio. The cd player, AUX line and HVAC does not seem to be effected. Also, in the morning - when I first turn - it sounds as if there is fluid sloshing in the bottom of the car. Help me understand the depth of the issue.

Had the throttle body replaced by Ford main dealer on my 1.8 petrol Focus two months ago. Cost was £519 and before that engine malfunction light was coming on sometimes, especially in wet weather, engine speed limited and running very roughly and over revving without touching the accelerator. Rained over last few days - car started ok then broke down on the motorway... exactly the same problem. Engine ran roughly, over revved, lost power. After 15 mins tried it again and it ran ok. I`ve got a Ford Focus st-3 2011 reg, I`ve noticed now a couple of mornings when it`s really cold the car doesn`t start. There are no warning signs on the dash, the windows and radio work as well, but as soon as I jump it it works fine for the whole day. I`ve even tested the battery and it`s fine. Could anyone tell me what the problem could be? (st-3)
Answers
Take your Focus to a specialized workshop and request fuel injectors cleaning which is done by specific device with a special fluid under the high pressure for cleaning grime from injectors. Also request checking throttle body (needs cleaning?) and its position sensor. Since it is only a problem in cold start, I suppose that the fuel pump, bobbin, spark plugs and their cables are all okay - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

I bought a Ford Focus six months ago and had problems with the revs while the engine was cold. When I took my foot off the accelerator the revs would yoyo between 500 and 1200, occasionally stalling the engine. My mechanic told me it needed a new throttle body so I had one fitted and everything was fine, but now the problem has started again after only six months. Surely it can`t be the throttle body again? Any help would be much appreciated.
Answers
Hmm, the first step has to be clean the throttle body and its plate (especially the edge of the plate) with special throttle body cleaner (not to harm the Teflon coating on the throttle body), and check the intermotor throttle body position sensor. Throttle body (with its inner round plate) and its sensor are under the air filter tube at the engine. Next stage is to clean injectors that can be done only in the workshop with special device which flushes injectors with special liquid under the high pressure. So, just check that sensor, and certainly cleans injectors. Focus will then run like a brand new (at cold start revs 1150, at hot engine 750) - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)
Hi, thanks for the reply. However I’ve just found out from the service history that this happened just before I bought the car too, at which point they cleaned the throttle body and it was fine for a few months. Then shown the same symptoms again, so this will be three times in 8 months it has happened. It’s all very strange - Steven from Lancashire
Hi Steven, that’s really overly often. It seems to be a dirty fuel. It would be good idea to clean the tank (certainly there is a sludge), replace the fuel filter, and ultimately clean the injectors - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

I have a problem with my Ford Focus 2000 model Zetec engine with the gear linkage. My question is can you repair them or do you need to buy a new one? (2000)
Answers
Unfortunately, the problem is not clearly described. Also, is your Focus 2000 automatic (with one gear lever selector linkage) or manual transmission (with two gear linkage cables)? And what is the problem? Can’t shift just to any gear, or only to one or few, or to all and R but not accurate, or the shift lever can be rotated in the neutral position...? Are you able to take a car to an authorized workshop where mechanic will fix the problem? It would be the best solution, because it may be several things: the bias spring has broken (the spring costs about 5 pounds and it takes about half an hour to fit (it fits on the bottom of the gear lever), or it may be just to align linkage with special linkage alignment tool, or to adjust selector cable ends on the transmission, or there is broken selector cable(s) and you can’t fix it by yourself, etc. So, the answer is: any fault in the gear linkage can be repaired and there is no need to buy new ones. First step is to identify the fault - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

Answers
Seems to me like unfixed wiper linkage to the wiper motor as a result of driving over bumps on the road. Check the wire connection to the wiper motor. To reconnect the linkage, first remove the wiped arms, then remove the wiped cowl. The wiper cowl bolts are located under the hood and screws through the spaces in the cowl. Reconnect linkage, reinstall cowl, and reinstall wiped arms. But, first try what is easier: look in the interior fuse box under the dash (remove the panel cover to access the fuse panel). Check the front wipers fuse (location #56 rating 20 A). In the same fuse box now check the front wiper relay (location R19). It is the same rating (and shape) as the rear relay (R18) so you may replace their positions to each other just to check. Finally, if the fuse, relay and linkage to the wiper motor are all OK, then the last problem could be in the switch on the inner edge of the wiper crank below the steering wheel. It could be lax wire connection, or hidden problem inside the switch itself - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)
About speedometer at zero: First step: disconnect the negative pole of the battery, and unscrew the bolt (wrench 10 mm) at the end of this short wire from negative pole to the car body. Clean the bolt and its tile from rust (abrasive paper for tile and wire brushing for bolt) and then spray both with WD40 including the bolt hole on the car body. Screw the bolt back, and connect negative battery pole. Also spray twice, no more, from WD40 vial (use tubule at dispenser to spray directional) into ignition keyhole, then put in ignition key and simulate engine start without real starting engine. Repeat several times and every time put out the key and dry it with Kleenex to clean it from WD40 and dirt. After that, all gauges on the instrument panel should indicate normally. Should, but... If not, next step is to clean the instrument cluster. Remove the trim from around the cluster: there are 4 Phillips screws at the top (the bottom is held by push in studs). There is next 4 screws holding the cluster in place; remove these and swing the cluster round. The white connector on the back has a black locking lever. Pull the lever away from the direction of the cables, over the little block. As this moves it will push the connector free. On the back of the cluster are screws and plastic loop. Remove these and remove the back to expose the back side of the board. Spray the connector and the board with a little bit of WD40, and with a small soft brush spread it over the back and clean the board. DON’T spray the instruments itself nor fiberglass panel! Put the unit in the airing room for 4-5 hours and fit it back in your car (beware of the connector locking lever!). Must work, but... If problem persists, there is the 3rd stage: it could be the vehicle speed sensor failure, it’s on the rear of the gearbox and a cheap item to replace. Now, must be OK, but... The last stage, but the most expensive solution, is to replace the instrument cluster - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

How do I open my Ford Focus` bonnet,? The key socket for the key in the grill behind the badge is not there. I bought the car from the auction and can’t open my bonnet. Can anyone help?
Answers
With a flashlight, light up a place behind the grille through the central hole behind the Ford badge, and also through the grille above the badge; is there a cable without keyhole at its end towards you (front), or no cable and just empty place? If there is no cable, you will see the white plastic ring (rounded shape) in the middle of bonnet lock mechanism. If so, it would be easier to open your bonnet, and all you need is a long enough screwdriver (about 300 mm). If there is a cable entering in the middle of lock mechanism, you will see the black rubber boot there, which you will need to pull off with a long enough needle nose pliers, or you can try with screwdriver (you have to do it through the grill). Now when you can see the white plastic ring in the middle of bonnet lock mechanism, you can unlock the bonnet. Thread a screwdriver through the grill directly above the Ford badge (or if there’s no cable, through the hole for key on the plate behind the badge) into the white plastic ring (not in its middle, but very near its edge there are slots around!), check if it got stuck, and first turn it left, lift bonnet when it pops, then turn it right, and now you can lift the bonnet. Once you open it, do not close the bonnet before repairing the lock mechanism. Repeatedly forcing the plastic ring with a screwdriver can destroy it, and you’ll have the bigger problem! Even there is a way to open the Focus bonnet by unscrewing the bolts that attach the lock mechanism to the car body, but it is very complicated and this can only be done by a person with very long arms and very small palms! And finally, shame on that one who sold you Focus without bonnet key socket!!! Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

I would like to know what is the default car battery for Ford Focus TDdi 2001 Amperage/Voltage as I don’t know if the one that is in my car is the right one - 75Ah/12V? Kind Regards. (TDdi)
Answers
Factory default battery for your Focus is 12 Volts 60 Ah (dimensions: 243L x 175H x 175W). Alternator on your vehicle is not designed to fill the larger battery. Commonly it’s about +10% battery capacity, which means up to 66 Ah for your car - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

I haven’t had any problems with my Ford Focus since getting it last Feb, but in the last week or so the handbrake keeps sticking when I reverse. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thank you for any replies.
Answers
First reason: there is a rust at the place where the handbrake’s cable goes into its outer flexible tube that keeps it from releasing. Second reason: in this freezing weather the handbrake pads keeps sticking, but usually will release once the car starts moving. The best way is to get a car to a garage to be fixed properly, because it can overheat entire wheel(s), catch damage and even fire - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

On your Ford Focus 1.6 petrol IACV is left under the intake (suction) manifold. It’s easy to see it when you’re standing in front of the car with open hood looking to the engine. The IACV is fixed with two bolts (you need wrench 10mm) and connected with wires plugged in on its left side. First unscrew the IACV and then disconnect it. You don’t need to disconnect negative battery pole because electrical wires are in the jack, and there is no danger of a short circuit. Now clean the IACV (its both holes) with spray, dry it and connect it first, and fnaly fix it with bolts. If problem persists (can’t start cold engine) you should have to buy a new IACV for your Focus model. Wish you luck with cleaning. Here is the link you can see how Focus’ IAVC looks: https://www.tnaautoparts.com/2001-ford-focus-idle-control-valve-p-66294.html - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)
Correction: wrench is 8mm (not 10mm as I answered before) so I’m sorry for that mistake. But, if starting cold engine persists after cleaning or even replacing IACV, then you should have to clean injectors, but it can be done in Ford service only - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

Hello, I’m having a problem with my 2004 Ford Focus that recently started. I just changed the battery the other day and now there’s a problem with my heater and windows. After I pull the key from the ignition there’s still power to my fan/heater as well as my windows. I can’t figure out the problem at all. When the car is turned off I can still lower my windows and I’m also able to play with my fan. Please help If you can? Thanks and have a nice day. (zx5 2.0L 16v Zetec engine)
Answers
First: disconnect the negative pole of the battery, and unscrew the bolt (wrench 10mm) at the end of this short wire at car body. Clean the bolt and its tile from rust (use abrasive paper for tile and wire brushing for bolt) and then spray both with WD40 including the bolt hole on the car body. Now screw the bolt back (strong enough but not to break it) and connect negative battery pole. Second: spray twice (no more) from WD40 vial (use tubule at its dispenser to spray directional, not wide) right into ignition keyhole, then put ignition key into it and simulate engine start without real starting engine. Repeat that several times and every time put out the key and dry it with kleanex or patch to clean it from WD40 and dirt. Hope it would fix your problem. Also before leaving the car always put the fan switch to 0 and windows completely closed. Have a nice day - Vladek from Croatia (Hrvatska)

Answers
I think there is no reason to be concerned, because the smoke is white. It must be the water vapor from exhausting system that is heating up from the cold state to the warm by hot exhaust gases. That means your battery is flat, so your hear that clicking sound, what happens is the battery doesn’t send enough power to the starter motor to then start the car. All exterior lights stayed on. I tried to restart it but it wouldn’t start for me. I had to leave it for about 5 minutes and then it started again. I started driving again and about 4 miles on again the same thing happened. The gauge was showing that I had 198 miles left of diesel and it still hadn’t reached the last mark. This morning the car showed after driving 21 miles that I had 202 miles left of diesel and then all of a sudden it shot up to 218 miles left of diesel. Can anyone please help? Thanks.

I have just had new spark plugs fitted to my Ford Focus st170 as it had a slight misfire. Since they have been fitted it runs awful and is misfiring worse than before. The garage said the old ones were very worn out, the plugs may have overworked the old coil and now it can’t handle the new ones! Is this true? (St170)
Answers
Well it could be, but might not be the case, check how many miles you have on the clock as spark plugs last between 50-100 thousand miles, it could be they not installed properly, it could be your wires not plugged correctly or it could just be the coil. If it is the coil they not expensive to buy and straight forward to change, they cost about £15 on eBay brand new but check all the other stuff first. Hope it helps - Elson Alves from Kent

I got in my Ford Focus this morning and all was well in driving around. I went to my local Tesco and went to leave and noticed something straightaway was not right. It was shuddering when idling below 1000rpm. I pulled over and checked all levels and they were fine. The oil was a little low but I topped this up whilst I had the bonnet open. I got back in and started it again, but still the same. If I put my foot on the accelerator and sit at approx 1000 rpm it doesn’t sound too bad but if I let it drop below it sounds rough and shudders. When I drive it it still sounds really rough and has a lack of power when accelerating. It just doesn’t sound right at all and doesn’t feel right either. What could be wrong?

Hi Tony, it sounds like the ice warning light, if the outside temperature is at 4 degrees or below it will light up yellow and when the temperature hits -0 and below should turn red (this may only be on the newer cars). Hope this helps - Mark from Worcestershire

Hello, I have a 2009 Ford Focus., but recently my gas meter goes up and down. I don`t know how much gas I have in my car. The meter will eventually start making that the gas tank is full and little by little it starts going down, but not for long because it will automatically say again that the tank is full. I already went to the mechanic and they did some diagnostics on it, but everything appears to be fine. Can anyone please help?

The fuse box is located behind the glovebox for some reason. I know this because my cigar lighter wouldn’t work so when the car was in for a service they changed the fuse and now it works fine. I think you only have to unscrew a couple of screws to get to the fuse box or just take it to Ford. Hope this helps - Dom Stephens from England

Does anyone have any idea why my 51 plate Ford Focus cuts out when cornering or pulling up at junctions? This only happens once I’m below 1/4 of a tank of fuel. I have changed the fuel filter as advised by Ford and it made no difference. Nobody seems to know what may be causing it. Can anyone help? Cheers. (1.4 petrol)
Answers
I had this problem with my old car 2000, and I got told it was my clutch, not sure if its the same for your car, but maybe it’s worth asking =/ Daniel from England
If your fuel levels get below 1/4 of a tank, you may find that momentum causes an air lock in the fuel pickup. This will make the fuel sensor believe there is insufficient fuel and the engine in turn will cut out. Hope this helps, a general rule I personally apply to driving cars and trucks for work is: If the fuel gets to 1/4 of a tank, fill it up. Another point is all the shit and sediment sits in the bottom 1/8th of your fuel tank, it is best not to have that sucked through your injectors - Andrew Mayer from Australia

Hi there. I bought a 1.6 red Ford Focus 2 weeks ago, it had the blue anti freeze in it so I changed it to the pink. After that I got major overheating problems everytime I moved an inch. I found out that my head gasket had gone so I got that replaced along with the thermostat and the water pump. Ever since that it was fine until it started overheating again on long journeys. I changed the fan on it and also the radiator as the old one was blocked. It calmed the overheating down and then it started again while I was climbing up a hill and then went back to halfway when desending. I can`t figure it out and really need to get the car back on the road to get to Edinburgh. Can anybody help me?
Answers
Not trying to be nasty, but who changed your radiator fluid and why? The number one thing to remember, if you have blue coolant flush out the radiator and ALL coolant related areas with fresh distilled water. Then and only then add your pink coolant. No matter what colours they are you must flush the system PROPERLY. By not doing this there can be a chemical reaction inside the engine that can lead to head gasket issues, major overheating issues etc. Andrew Mayer from Australia

Please help! I recently had some work carried out on my 2005 Ford Focus, 1.6 (115 Version). It used to rattle on start up after the oil was warm, which turned out to be the following, as it was ’engine flushed’ during a service and the engine light came on two days later. The fault light linked to a cam not responding in a timely fashion, various things were looked at but in the finish, under an extended warranty the following was done. Both Cam sprockets replaced - Coil - Water Pump (optional) - Timing belt - Full Cam belt kit and tensioned This resulted in the rattle going away on start up, but two days later created a new rattle of it`s own and it is this I nor the garage can understand or locate. It can be described as a metallic rattle, but one that sounds more like a couple of ball bearings in a biscuit tin, or a chain that is loose on a pedal bike and that ’chain jingle, like muted kid`s toy bells’. Okay, this is where I think it gets confusing. This noise, from what seems to be the right side as you would see it from the driver`s seat of the engine bay, which happens also to be the same side as the work which was carried out recently, only appears when the following happens - When warm, a cold engine will not produce the sound - only when pulling away, or turning right or left, linked mostly to the gear you are in. It only happens when either in first or moving to second gear and it is just as you pull off, stopping as you change or as you change down at very low speed, say to let someone out. This is where speed comes in. It never happens when the engine is going along at ’normal’ speeds, it is exclusively below 20 mph or less. The sound only happens when in gear, never when ticking over in neutral or when revved when stationary. The garage could make the sound when allowing the car to bite in gear with the handbrake on, I guess essentially putting a load on the engine, but again, never when out of gear or when the car is driving above 2nd, which is really very odd. It makes me question the moving parts, why wouldn’t it make that sound, which is very distinctive, when stationary if it were any of the bits recently replaced, as they are moving in or out of gear? Why only in low gear and pulling away, which applies sometimes to reverse too, it is all very confusing? I should add, that not for a moment has it appeared to affect the performance of this car, if any thing it is better since the work, short of a tad of usual pinking, tappet sound on steep hills that you hear bounce back from fences or houses near by. I would be extremely grateful for thoughts or advice on this. Oh, the garage, although having looked at the car, were prepared to leave it until I need the brakes done soon where they would then spend some time looking for it, but I am feeling a little wary of them touching the car again, given that all these problems started after it had been serviced by them. Any ideas please? (1.6 115)

The fuse board I have has two rows of fuses along one edge but there is no diagram anywhere to tell me which fuse it should be. From day one the engine of my Ford Focus has had an idle problem but my Ford main dealer can’t get a fault code and aren’t too interested. Occasionally on start up the revs fluctuate from 250 - 500 rpm. In the early days pressing the accelerator at this point caused a stall. Pressing it now clears the problem and I have just given up really. I also told Ford that the temperature gauge goes from cold to normal operating temperature within 2 minutes (1/2 mile) even on a cold morning, surely that can’t be right? The engine doesn’t react quickly or smoothly on pressing the accelerator sharply in neutral and "pinks". Has anyone else had similar issues? To answer my own question for the record: a third visit to my (very good) local garage produced an answer and another question. This time when the system was plugged into the computer it showed up a faulty potentiometer and when that was replaced the car went like a bird again - particularly, perhaps, as the fuel system had by now had a real going over. Answers
The older Focus types use the engine cooling fan when the air conditioning is on. Check to see if your air distribution knob is on demist (screen position). If it is the aircon and fan will come on (it`s used to quick demist as the aircon removes moisture from the air). Take the control knob from demist and cancel the air con button under it. If your aircon switch is unlit and you are not on "Screen", the fan won`t come on. If this doesn`t solve the problem check your vehicle earth strap and engine fan wiring, coolant levels, your radiator and cooling system may need a flush. The fan prevents you having overheating problems, but it may be wearing hard because it`s blocked to the point it can cope - so far - Graeme Hall from England

I have just bought a Ford Focus Zetec 1999. On driving a little further the heat gauge goes into the red and stays that way for about 3 minutes, an exclamation light comes on briefly, the fan kicks in and then the gauge goes down to normal almost immediately. What could the problem be?

I have just replaced the alternator on my 2007, 1.8 Ford Focus Sport as it packed in on the motorway. Since then the ignition light goes out when the engine is started, but comes on again after about 30 seconds. On a long run of 40ish miles the light goes out at around 70 mph but then comes back on again. I have had the charge rate and battery tested and both are satisfactory. Maybe it’s a faulty replacement alternator, but I don’t fancy changing it again and then finding out that’s not the problem. Has anybody come across this before? (1.8 sport)

I have a 1.8 Ford Focus Tdci (2002). I’ve noticed a "click" noise coming from the back when I change gear, mostly when I go from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear. I would not say it is a knocking sound but more of a loud click. It happens when I release the clutch pedal fully, immediately after changing gear. I’ve recently had a full service, cambelt change, and MOT. Not another annoying noise I have to put up with surely?

If you aren’t getting any answers (like me) to your questions, then I recommend purchasing a Haynes Manual instead. I recently bought one on e-bay at a bargain price. Whilst I don’t actually understand the more complicated sections of the book e.g. removal / refitting of cylinder head gaskets and engine removals etc, I can follow the rest of it quite easily. I have in fact found the answers to many of my unanswered questions on unexplained clicks, rattles and noises. I realise a lot of people will already own Haynes manuals, but if you are relatively new to the idea then all I can say is buy it - Emma Thomas from Isle of Anglesey
Is the clunk as you pull away after being parked? If it`s happening once in a journey as you pull away for the first time after starting the engine, then it`s normal - this is the anti-lock system testing itself. This should only happen once in every journey and as you pull away, usually as you say between the changes of first and second gear and you may feel a slight resistance that releases. It will happen every time you have re-started the engine and pull away, but not in the same journey if the engine has not been turned off since its last occurrence. If it is happening more than once after starting the car and driving away have your anti-lock tested at the dealer - a plug-in diagnostic will reveal any problems. So to sum up - at the beginning of every journey on pulling away you should hear a clunk from the back of the car, this should not happen again while the engine is running. If you stop and turn the engine off (to park for the shops for instance) then re-start your car, it will clunk again as you pull away - Graeme Hall from England

I have just purchased a Ford Focus 1800 tdci 2005 model and after driving 20 miles the engine system`s fault warning light came on. I didn`t stop as I was not sure what it was and I was nearly home. When I got home and read what the light was I phoned the garage up and told them and they said bring the car back as there shouldn`t be a problem. On the way back the light came on again after 15 miles. They had the car for a few days and said that they had put it on a machine and fixed the problem but on driving home the light came on again after 20 miles. I could see by the mileage that they hadn`t driven the car to see if the problem was fixed. I have now got to take it back. Should I ask for my money back? Cheers. (1800 tdci)
Answers
They clearly havent fixed the problem so if you`ve paid them you should be entitled to your money back or have the problem sorted. I`ve had the same problem in the past and from what you have said it was the same as my problem, the light came on for no reason. Ask the garage for the diagnostic (machine) problem code. You can then find the problem yourself via the internet. Mine turned out to be a corroded wire going into the coil pack (a common fault) and this sounds similar to your problem. The car has a full Ford service history from it`s life in Scotland and we have since been told the car had been standing for several weeks. The whining noise eased but is still intermitent so we took it to Ford who said it`s a normal sound for the type of pump it has (electric) and the older ones often make this noise. I had a 2002 1.8 Zetec, which the head gasket went on a couple of years ago. I’d heard a clicking noise for about a week or two before it actually went completely. If only I’d have booked it in when I first heard that noise, as instead of it costing me around £250 (the quote from the garage when still driveable) I never got round to having it replaced. So I broke down 40 miles from home, had to be towed to the garage, who then subsquently charged me £749 (after the event). My Ford Focus keeps showing "battery low, check handbook". Does anyone know why it is saying this and what the problem is?
Answers
It is possible that the alternator is faulty and not putting enough charge back into the battery. On the other hand it could be that the battery needs replacing as well. There is also the question of what mileage you are doing when you use the car, if you are only doing a very low mileage you are not giving the alternator enough time to charge the battery back up, so if you`re only doing low mileage I suggest taking it on a good 20 mile run and see what that does. If the light still comes on take it to a garage and have a battery/alternator check done on it. I`d suggest Kwik-fit for the check as they do them free of charge and you have no obligation to have the work required done there - Dean from England

Hi there. We have a 56 reg Ford Focus 1.8tdci sport and have had problems in the past when the fusebox got water in and in turn made the instrument cluster go, costing us a fortune to get fixed. Recently the car seems to be using more diesel than normal and has some power lag when you try to accelerate at times. Today my husband went to drive it and it started with no problem. He drove with no problem but when he looked at the dials on the dashboard the temperature dial was at the highest point and the fuel gauge was higher than if you had a full tank of fuel. Try having your egr valve checked out or your catalytic converter checked out, depending on the year of the car Ford Focuses are notorious for the egr valves going bad - they quit working properly and can cause the "service engine soon" light to come on, plus you will get poor gas mileage and the car may drive a little rough. Now if the catalytic converter is clogged depending on how bad it is, the car will sputter and cut out, sometimes die. It will also cause the car to overheat, and a bad smell to come through your vents, like burning oil or rotten eggs. These are just a few suggestions I can offer you because these are the problems I have had with my car, so good luck! Janelle from United States of America

My Ford Focus today failed it`s MOT. The garage stated that I needed a new front windscreen motor at a cost of £210 and possibly the linkage which would cost a further £200. My windscreen wipers are working fine with no problems at all. Does this seem normal and if so is that a fair price?
Answers
WOW I have never heard of that one before unless the windshield wiper motor has gone bad, and that is a very high price to pay considering my electric motor in both back windows went bad and it only cost me 70 to relplace both of them plus labour. I think you should make sure that is the problem and not something wrong with the wiring or a fuse... If that is the problem, try a junkyard and get a used motor, it will save you quite a bit of money... Janelle from United States of America

Sometimes, depending on what the error code is, and what was wrong with the vehicle when it was wrecked, salvaged vehicles aren’t too bad of a deal sometimes, but before you purchase one I would ask for a car fax so you can get a history and have a good mechanic look at it, just to make sure the car will run and has no other problems and is worth your money - Janelle from United States of America

Answers
Try checking the egr valve, it is nothing too serious to fix, it is a part of your emission control system and will trigger your service engine soon light to come on. If it’s not that then there is probably an oxygen sensor or an issue with your exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold can be costly to fix, but the rest of the problems can be solved simply and will not cost a lot. And if that isn’t the problem run an obd test on it to see what codes come back - Janelle from United States of America

Answers
There probably isn’t a way to fix this problem. My Ford Focus also does the same thing. I just keep an eye on it and my fluids just to make sure it isn’t over heating, mine will go up to the red zone, then when I idle the car or start driving it goes back down, just watch for smoke coming from the engine, or a bad smell of antifreeze or any other sign the car may be over heating. Make sure your overflow tank and radiator have fluid in them and its really nothing big to worry about, if anything it may be a fuse, or early sign that something needs replaced, check your thermostat too, cause it usually needs to be replaced depending on how many miles the car has on it. Thermostats are often replaced in Ford Focuses and it is a very cheap part to fix... Good luck! Janelle from United States of America

It sounds like it could be an electric problem - short in the wires or fuses and an electrician is the best person to take it too. However my car did the same thing, I had the battery and alternator tested and replaced the battery with brand new cables and a new battery but the problem still occurred. I later on found out that the alternator was going bad and it was gonna need to be replaced, it still had enough juice to run the car but since it was going bad, my lights got dim, my gauges were going wacky and my lights were flashing at me but I solved the problem and now it is in good shape - Janelle from United States of America

It’s never good on a vehicle to drive it everyday at that speed, it wears and tears on your tires, your suspension, your shocks struts and brakes. There are a lot of other things that will also wear and tear the more you drive it at that rate of speed, plus you are putting a lot of mileage on it and bringing sown the value of the car so when you are ready to resale the vehicle you will loose out quite a bit of money on it - Janelle from United States of America

The wiring under the seats is for the seat belt pre-tensioners which would also put airbag light on, try disconnecting the multiplugs blow out any residue within and reconnect - Martin Jones from Essex
Try pulling the airbag fuse. I have airbags in my car, but because Ford Focuses are small vehicles I don’t feel airbags are safe to have. If an airbag ignites, a seat belt will save your life before an airbag, as an airbag can explode and the gases and fumes that come from it can burn you severely or can cause you to get trapped in the vehicle. If you don’t want to do that then I would suggest taking it in to the Ford dealer because there may be some kinda malfunction or wiring wired wrong. Sometimes in Focuses the wiring is wacky, don’t know for sure why, but that would be my suggestion if you want to keep the airbags ignited - Janelle from United States of America

Catalytic converter is clogged and either needs to be replaced or hollowed out. Or you could have your timing belt checked because the smell of rotten eggs could be that the timing belt is going bad. Does anyone know when the cooling fan starts to kick in on a 200 Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec petrol 2000? Thanks.
Answers
The radiator fan should turn on as soon as you are sitting and idling for too long. This helps keep the car engine from over-heating when you are driving or just sitting in the vehicle while it is running. However the fan usually doesn’t run while the motor is in drive. If the fan isn’t kicking on then try turning the air conditioner on and see if that fan turns on to cool the engine. I have had the same problem and find that my fan has a mind of its own. I had to replace the relay switch and check all the fuses. However, it may be the fan needs to be replaced cause it is not working properly, it may also be the wiring just a few suggestions, good luck - Janelle from United States of America

This noise vanishes when the clutch is fully depressed. It doesn’t effect the gear changing in any way though. I’ve also noticed a juddering on occasions when driving, it did it twice today at speeds of 60-70mph. I took it to a local mechanic who put it up on the ramp but couldn’t see anything loose. Can someone please tell me where the wiper relay for a Ford Focus 2007 1.6 might be found, as my front wipers are not working. I have checked the fuse, wiper motor and stalk and are all working. I can’t think of any other thing it can be. Help please!!!
Answers
Hi Graeme, I had the same problem, if it’s just the intermittent wipe, it’s the relay R15 OR R19. If all the wiper controls are not working, it’s the Body Control Unit or as I would call it - the fusebox. It’s about £300 to buy and Ford has to code it to get it to work, you can get a secondhand one but be sure it’s from the same spec of car and make sure the wiper motor isn’t faulty as this will back feed down to the new box and blow it as well. My advice: get Ford to plug it in to the computer to tell you what’s wrong with the box. Money well spent - Mervyn McNeill from County Antrim

Another question on the Focus Cl V-Reg. I would like to fit front fog lights to the front bumper which are not present and have heard that all I need to do is change the lower grill in the bumper to the oblong one. Apparently that leaves the 2 triangular bits to fit the fogs light and the fittment is there. This original grill corners over where the fog lights can go for blanking purposes, then all I need to do is swap to a twin fog switchpack. Any ideas?

Now when I unlock the car from drivers side it will only unlock the drivers door, occasionally all, when the car is unlocked there is flicking back and forth on the central locking including when driving down the road randomly. As I’ve changed the mech I can’t see what this could be, also when I lock the car it immediately doubles back and unlocks very rarely it stays locked. Help please : ) (CL Model)

New coil plugs and leads will cure misfire. Check the wiring by the tail gate inside the rubber converluted pipe for your electrical fault - L&R from England
Or you could check your fuses inside the motor and under the steering wheel for your defrost and wipers. And misfiring is usual caused by spark plugs or spark plug wires (coil wires). You could also check the coil pack, or it could be something within your fuel injection system. These are just a few problems I have ran across. Also catalytic converters are well known to clog in Ford Focuses - if you have any funny smells coming through the vents or your vehicle is getting hot or losing power - that is also a suggestion you can consider. Hi. Over the last several months the dashboard handbrake light and red frost light have occasionally remained on after all the other lights have turned off. Whilst these dashboard lights remain on, the windows/sunroof/doors lost function and the dashboard temp gauge read ----. Eventually the lights would switch off on their own accord and normal window function etc. resumed. This didn’t take any set amount of time, and conditions were normal, i.e. not that cold, sunny etc. so it seemed completely random. We took the car to a dealer who claimed to have replaced the sensors under the warranty but problem remains, in fact it has gotten worse. Over the last few days, the dashboard handbrake and frost lights have remained on permanently and do not turn off at any point, meanwhile the windows etc. remain locked and temp reads ----. Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! (ST)

Hi John, I believe it can be two things - 1. Heater matrix is broken (normally your passenger footwell will be wet) 2. You have an airlock. If it is the latter then I suggest getting out the Haynes manual and seeing if there is a valve (normally at the highest point of the engine by windscreen wiper motor etc). If not, to get rid of an air lock, you need to flush the system by putting a hose pipe in your water bottle, undo the return to the water bottle from the raidiator, turn tap on full and turn car on with heater on full and just let it run through for 10 mins - Mike B from England

I have a Ford Focus 1.4 petrol Zetec ’02 plate. When the engine is running, there is like a rattling noise coming from the engine. Looking back when I just recently purchased the car for my wife, I believe there may have not been enough engine oil in the vehicle causing this problem. This is consistent and I thought it was the tappits as it is coming directly from there. On asking a mechanic, he told me the Focus 1.4 zetec petrol do not have tappits fitted in them. Just need some advice if this was right and it may be a case of picking up another engine to replace. Regards - Umar Malik from England

I have a 2001 Focus tdi endura (90) bhp model with 106,000miles. It died on me yesterday just cutting out on tickover. I tried to start it and revved it up to 2000rpm which was fine but it died again on tickover. Then the yellow glow coil light flashed so I rung the RAC and he diagnosed it was a fuel error, which could be either the cambelt slipped a tooth or the fuel injection pump. It sounds as if f.i.p which are prone to going at 100,000. I can get a virgin part for £850 fitted but I’ve read it could be the EDC unit on top of the pump at a fraction of the cost. This is caused by a failing gearbox speed sensor and if it isn’t replaced, it will result in the car stalling and failing to start. An easy fix but best to leave to a mechanic as they can snap and finish up inside gearbox resulting in a hefty bill to strip and rebuild box. Top tip: soak the sensor with WD40 a couple of times before having it removed and it should be fine. Good luck - Martin Skilleck from England
One other possible fault could be the cylinder head temperature sensor wiring on top of the rocker box cover. The signals from the sensor get interupted by the electrical pulse from the HT leads going to the spark plugs. I have seen a few cars with this problem - Anthony from Lancashire

It’s simple you have a small radiator behind your blower fan called a matrix. If your engine is up to temperature, check that two slim hoses going into the car behind the engine are hot or one is hot. There are two solutions: take off one of the hoses then on full into the tube sticking out of the panel that you took the hose from the hose is about the size of a ten pence in diameter then do the same with the other hose. You will see if the water flows keep trying BUT watch for drips on your carpet. If anything, your heater matrix is buggered - Pauly Milburn from England

I’ve recently been insured on a Ford Focus, after learning in a Vauxhall Corsa, I love driving the Focus but am absolutely useless at the handbrake. It’s really stiff and I struggle even with two hands to release it whereas I had no trouble at all with the Corsa. But our drive is on a slope so not sure if it can be adjusted too much? Would it make it more likely to roll down the drive, even if left in gear?
Answers
Depends how steep your drive is, if it is a steep gradient then leaving it in gear would not be advisable. If the handbrake lever only pulls up a couple of clicks, lift center console cover and let the cable adjuster off slightly - Martin Jones from Essex
Hi if you remove the cover from the handbrake, you will see a 10mm nut. Just wind it out approx a small finger length - 6 turns - then try the handbrake. You will get it how you like it in no time. I assume a petrol engine. If so, the fuel pump is a common problem to stop working intermittently - Martin Jones from Essex
Hi, there are only three reasons for this fault on your particular vehicle. One: is the fuel rail or fuel itself contaminated? It’s always a good idea to put injector cleaner in the fuel tank fill with petrol. Two: are your battery terminals loose? Three: your fuel pump is giving up, turn the ignition key and listen for a buzzing sound. The best thing to do is wait for it to break down again and listen for your pump. It’s easy to repair any of these things, no dealer, no cost. If you have a diesel, the fault is the fuel filter or contaminated fuel plus a blocked pipe end in the tank again. Put injector cleaner in to the fuel tank. Kind regards - Pauly Milburn from Yorkshire
