In recent weeks we have noticed that engine speed control is not always responsive to throttle position under the right foot. Driving off from standstill this means that a lot of lurching goes on as if we cannot control clutch and accelerator in a coordinated manner. As if we are a new learner. This can be quite dangerous in a queue of traffic as the car behaviour is difficult to predict and control. We have also noticed that it will happily run on with all feet off the controls without stalling. To my mind the throttle position is being adjusted by the ecu but there are no indications of problems on the ecu fault log. Before I approach Fiat does anyone have a similar experience and fix to share. I can see posts that describe something similar to Puntos but nothing very helpful. Thanks.

when headlights are switched on after a short while they flick off and then won't come back on again until the indicators are flicked. The lights then go off again and flick on and off. Can be very frightening whend riving in the dark in the north of Scotland where not many street lights exist! Anyone with an idea of the problem?

Answers

Yes we have a fiat panda that did the same when indicating the lights would flick off on quickly when the indicator stork self cancels. However it has miraculously stopped now but you will need a new indicator/lights instrument stork as the connections inside become lose and worn over time. May be tricky locating one most definitely have to buy online or head to a scrap yard and salvage one. Kris from Nottinghamshire

Sometimes, when I am driving in automatic, the auto gearbox fails me and goes straight into manual. This started happening about 8 months ago and has happened 4 times since. Thankfully, this model of car has a manual gear option so I am still able to drive it, but it is quite frightening when you are doing 70mph on a dual carriageway and the gearbox fails, putting you into manual 1st gear so you slow down abruptly. Once I turn the engine off and let it rest it is normally fine when I start up again. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Sticking clutch pedal. I see a number of past posts on this subject, has anyone found a solution for this yet? Son's 2007 Panda Dynamic 1.2, very intermittent fault (I initially thought it was my son!). Clutch sticks to floor, only releases with a sharp second stab. Accompanied by squeaking noise from area where activating rod enters gearbox housing. Seems temperature dependant but not always. Local garage couldn't get it to play up despite many eforts / test drives. Got them to change fluid & check slave. All seems ok. Got it home and the problem is back. It's not carpet, pedal spring etc, seems related to binding near operating shaft. Any ideas or solutions? Thanks.

I have had this problem for the best part of a year! The mechanics couldn't replicate it in my case either until one took it for a 20 mile test drive and it got heavy and squeaky. It turned out it was the master cylinder had grease all over it, looks like it happened at last MOT and service (my mechanic generously said it was probably an apprentice! at the other garage). I have now had the master cylinder replaced a month ago and all is good again. Zoe from Devon

In cold weather the passenger side front and back door locks jam on. Car was new in September last year. It is ok when wet but happens only when there is a frost, whether it has been dry or wet in the preceding days. This is my 2nd Panda - the first was an Active and that had the same issue intermittently but the dealership changed the locks twice. By the time I got current one, it was still happening. I took this new one to dealership yesterday and was told that it all seemed to be working fine and they couldn't find a fault. I said I was concerned about security of car and this is a known problem on older models but was told to call them if it happens again. Does anyone know of this fault in latest model or should I contact Fiat directly?

My car is now 5 years old. I have maintained it with every service. The only major work needed has been changing the timing belt. It has 24,000 miles on the clock. I am at the inevitable crossroads of deciding whether I should spend £500 for new tyres and brake discs or trade it in for a new or used Fiat Panda. How much life could I reasonably expect from my existing, well-cared for car, given that I spend the £500? (I could possibly get £2000 for my car in a trade for a used car worth approx. £4,500, but would I get anymore years out of it than my existing car with just £500 outlay?) Any advice very welcome.

I'd stick with what you have. Better the evil you know! My wife's 1.1 56 reg Active has done 46k miles since we bought it as a pre-reg car from a Fiat dealer in Carlisle and is still on its first set brakes, exhaust and battery. It's had 3 sets of front tyres, a couple of anti-roll bar rubbers, its cam belt changed (at a local garage, cost about £95) and that's it, other than usual servicing costs... We are certainly going to keep it for a good while yet! Chris Breen from Cumbria

Trouble selecting gears: For some time now I have had troule getting the car to go into gear after running in heavy start stop traffic for an hour or more. The more clutch and gear changes, the worse it gets. It is eventually like trying to get into gear without pressing the clutch in. When the car cools down, probably 15 to 30 mns all is OK. The clutch kit was replaced and the clutch was bled before Christmas (2014) but after 2 hours in traffic the clutch was to the floor and the gears had to be forced in, after that with the clutch still to the floor the car would creep forward. The car has been back in the garage to be re checked. With the garage claiming no fault has been found. The clutch kit was replaced because the garage said that was the problem. Anybody had any experience of the same. Car is a 56 reg. Any help or advice (please don't say spend more money we are at £600.00 so far with tyres and wishbone, the car is not worth much more), someone mentioned gearbox but the garage says no. regards Brian (29.12.2014)

My car has been on the drive for a week over Christmas holiday not being used, an went to shop in it yesterday started fine but about 3 minutes into my journey the "steering fail" warning came up. I got to the shop an it restarted again fine an then again the warning sign only (the red wheel) appeared on the dash. I am in the process of turning over the engine as hoping it is to do with my battery being flat? No warning lights have come up an the "check ok" came up on the dash. My car is due its winter service - any feedback help welcome. I have been reading forum an worried as by the sounds of this this warning is not good. It is an 55 plate an has 52,000 miles an had no other problems with it.

My panda has just started after its been stood over night the. Clook has gone to 0.00 and I have to reset it. It is fine all day then. It starts up and drives fine. Can anyone help me to why its doing this. Thank you

Answers

Hello Cherrell My problems also started with the clock zeroing, but over time, starting the car got progressively worse. Initially it only happened during a cold start, but it now happens each and every time I have to start it. The only way I can get the car going is to rev it like blazers at the start up. And while doing so, the lights eventually come back on the 'dead' dashboard ..... complete with blinking clock reset back to 00:00! I don't know what the problem is and sorry I can't help, but I am looking in to what's causing this myself. I can update you, if you like, when I do eventually find out what the problem is and/or if you have found the answer to the problem/cause since writing your question, please share it with me. Many thanks and regards, Helen Helen from South Africa

Thank you Helen for your reply. If I get any further information that will help us. I will post. With thanks cherrell cherrell from West Yorkshire

Thanks Cherrell - appreciate the reply and promise to keep you informed. The battle to start is the least of my problems at the moment because I've also developed a clutch problem! It stays depressed to the floorboard and won't come back up and allow me to shift in to any gear, so a double whammy, especially when driving in heavy traffic. As this is the more show-stopping and serious of the two hassles I'm currently having, I will have to spend time and limited resources on fixing this first. If the mechanic can identify and fix the starting problem at the same time, I will certainly share the findings with you. But when this problem first occurred in April this year, the mechanic could find no apparent cause or reason .... all he could advise me to do was start the car by revving the engine over 4 - 5 on the counter each time. It works, but is not the solution as clearly there has to be a reason for the cause and thus, a problem that needs fixing. Helen from South Africa

Just collected and returned new Panda 1.2 Easy. Within 2 miles gear change difficult , clutch pedal bite got nearer and nearer the floor and eventually with pedal hard down to the floor was unable to disengage clutch, stalling to stop vehicle. Restart with clutch down lurched vehicle, restart out of gear but then unable to engage first gear with out revving engine first. Scary and dangerousi in heavy traffic. After clear run,ie no stop start clutch pedal seemed to improve and car driveable again. Not a good feedback response from the clutch and jerky take off still however. Dealer puzzled? Claimed no fault found and ok when test driven. Car left with the dealer as considered unsafe to drive. Any thoughts?

Answers

Hi Seth Although my car is not new (2007 model), it only has +-38 700 on the clock. But I'm experiencing the same death-defying driving problems with my Panda 1.2 Dynamix myself! I've looked up info on the internet and gone in to a number of forums, but the possible answers to the problem are too varied - master cylinder packing up, worn springs, transit movement, worn parts, needs bleeding, contamination, seal failure .... etc., etc. I've had two different mechanics look at it. The first admitted being clueless as to what the problem is, but made some adjustments which seemed to 'solve' the problem for the past six months. But yesterday, yep, same problems with the clutch staying depressed to the floorboard, which made for some nail biting, hair raising driving in very heavy holiday traffic. Then parked at a shopping mall and when I came out, the clutch would not lift off the floor when I tried to engage gear yesterday and left me stranded for five hours. I was told by the mechanic looking at it in the mall's parking lot that I need a new clutch kit, but I am not really convinced that this is the cause or that it will fix the problem. He eventually replaced some worn rubber part and although the problem wasn't fixed, I was eventually able to get home amid lots of prayers for robots to stay green (90% of them didn't)! Have you found out what the cause is and if so, please can you update me? My nearest Fiat agency is over 200 kms away and obviously this is going to be expensive for them to look at and fix - not that I would ever risk the long drive anyway. Many thanks! Helen from South Africa

Hi Helen, Thanks for the post. The car is still with the dealer. They have no idea what is causing the problem. Nor, apparently do Fiat. The solution? Is to change the entire clutch hydraulics including pipe work. I'm not convinced! If I get an answer I'll let you know Regards Seth Seth from Hampshire

i have a red light come up on dashboard that looks like a steering wheel . no idea what this is can anyone help pls

Answers

Hi Linda, I had the same problem yesterday. I stopped at my Fiat garage and was told that the warning light would normally come on In the event of electric power steering system failure, however the car can be driven with mechanical steering. My mechanic also explained that this warning light can also be illuminated if the battery charge is low, which is likely in our case as the Panda had been left at the airport for some days. We will get the battery charged and see how it looks. Al from Italy

Hi Linda The same happened to me and then my steering wheel starting making a grating sound. Found out the power steering was packing up and also discovered that this is an inherent problem with the Fiat Pandas. I only had +- 24 800 kms on the clock too! The problem also developed exactly TWO days out of its warranty and because the new mechanism is imported and had to be fitted by the Fiat agents, would have cost a huge amount of money to fix. I am not sure if your car is still under warranty? If so, get this seen to ASAP. If it is out of warranty, do your research, like I did and speak to the head office of Fiat in your country. This is what I did and I fought them tooth and nail - they eventually fetched the car and repaired it at their cost because I could prove the power steering failure was a common problem with this car make and model. Hope this helps! Helen from South Africa

My Fiat has developed a leak to the radiator. Service engineer said U shud get it replaced ASAP. Couldn't I just use radweld? Money tight!

Answers

It might just be leaking pipe or a perished pipe which you need to fix and replace, however radwell over long periods of use block up the pipes in the cooling system. If it`s a small leak it may work, it should only be used for a temporary fix to get you to a garage / mechanic wouldn't recommend long term use of this as had very bad experiences myself using this. I hope this is useful but I would get it sorted asap as it could result in cylinder head problems if left unattended Good Luck stevie from Perth and Kinross

Why after 4000 miles only and having been into the dealer once at 1000 miles for the engine oil light staying on intermittently has it started staying on now and again. I think this fault was not solved in the first instance. Now it is out of warranty there is no chance of this original problem being done without expense. I think if Fiat can't get it right first time knowing the problem is common they should give up making cars that don't even see the warranty through.

Answers

Hi Ken My power steering packed up TWO days out of warranty and with only +-24 800 on the clock. To give you some advice, I mention this because: 1. You can prove this has been a problem from the get-go when the car was under warranty 2. Phone your Fiat head office and speak to them. I did this for my power steering problems and although I had to fight tooth and nail, eventually got them to fix it at their cost because I was able to prove that power steering problems were inherent in the Fiat Panda. So don't throw in the towel - make Fiat accountable and responsible for the problem and get them to fix it at their own cost. You have a stronger case than I did because your problems first appeared when the car was under warranty. They will give you a lot of excuses initially, like they did to me, but if you threaten to tarnish their name in the media and on social networks like I did, they will likely come to the party. Hope this is of some help? Helen from South Africa

The red oil pressure light on my Panda 1200 4x4 suddenly started coming on at about 1200rpm at idling and slightly higher revs and once the engine has reached operating temperature. However when I changed from the SYNTHETIC 10W-40 oil to a thicker 25Wr-40 conventional mineral the problem disappeared. No more red light. Please advise, as conflicting views and advice about this issue has had an adverse effect on the quality of my life. You see I am a pensioner on a tight budget and simply can't afford the expense of an oil pump replacement....to afterwards find that the light still comes on. So my big question is whether the thicker mineral oil is going to be harmful and shorten engine life and if so,to what extent? Could a sump cleanout possibly solve my problem? Your advice will be greatly appreciated . E R Walker South Africa

MY FIAT PANDA MAKE A LOUD SQUEALING NOISE BUT IT ONLY HAPPENS AFTER A LONG DRIVE COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OR FRONT RIGHT SIDE BUT ONLY WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL SLIGHT TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. I DONT THINKS ITS THE BEARINGS AS THE NOISE ONLY HAPPENS AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT HOUR AND NOT ALL THE TIME.

Answers

Any squealing noises from the wheels is usually the brake pads (or something in the pads, stones or rubble) just catching the discs. The pads should be checked for thickness or damage, but it is usually the pistons in the calipers not allowing the pads to return of the brake disc. A good cleaning of the caliper components would be cheapest from a spares point of view but expensive labour would cost more then new calipers and pads (and possibly discs). The reason it des not happen straight away is that it will take a number of brake applications before the discs heat up and expand to contact the pads. If there is unusual tyre wear then that is the bearings, get the bearings replaced as soon as possible. bcooper from South Yorkshire

My wife has a 2005 4x4 which is experiencing a similar problem My local friendly independent garage tells me that the problem is caused by the bushes that help support the suspension. At the front end nice and easy, bushes are £15 - £20 but the back end requires a whole new arm which at the moment are about £120 to £150 a piece and you should replace both at the same time. I have spent the morning looking for used parts but it is obvious that our model hasn't been dying and yielding parts for second hand use :( So I guess you have a similar problem - any competent mechanic should be able to tell you if the bushes are shot. i'lllet you know what happens. My wife`s Fiat Panda makes a funny noise coming from the passenger side like water running when in first and second gear on first start up, but after around 2 miles it disappears. No warning lights come on and the temp is okay. Any suggestions please? (1.1)

My Fiat Panda has an intermittent loss of power steering when I have to switch off and then switch on to reset. Why is it doing this please?

Answers

Hi Jim I had a similar problem, but my power steering was also making a grating sound. It turned out the power steering mechanism was starting to fail - TWO days after the car was out of warranty and with only +-24 800 kms on the clock. Power steering failure is an inherent problem with the Fiat Panda, as my subsequent research discovered. One Fiat agency in another town even confessed that he stocks the spare imported (and therefore extremely expensive) mechanism because they fix of average 5 - 7 a month! If you car is still under warranty, get this fixed ASAP. If it is not, I suggest you do like I did - which is phone around to other Fiat agencies, play dumb and let them tell you what the problem is. The ones I did all said it was most likely a failing power steering problem within seconds and with little prompting for more information to make a diagnostic on the phone. I took down names and locations of the agencies, the person I spoke to, date and time, etc. After I'd determined without doubt that this is a common problem with Fiat Pandas, I phoned the head office in my country and took the fight to them. They tried to duck behind it being out of warranty, but after promising to go viral and to the media and tarnish Fiat's name, they eventually fixed the problem at no cost to myself. The repairs at the time (import/exchange rate) would have set me back about 1 800 pounds. Hope my experience is of some help? Helen from South Africa

Fiat Panda 2011

Hi. My Fiat Panda`s remote central locking will not lock or unlock the driver`s door when used. The car only has 13,000 miles on so is quite young. Is this a common problem? Also, when I am driving straight and then turn the wheel slightly to the right there is a regular ’chinking’ noise, which disappears when I turn the wheel straight again. Does anyone know what this might be please? It was only MOT’d yesterday so I’m assuming it’s nothing serious otherwise they would have picked this up? (Dynamic)

I recently purchased a 2010 Fiat Panda. At one point the fuel warning light came on and the odometer began to display the number of miles left until petrol required. After filling the car up with petrol the odometer still shows that figure and I can find no information on how to get it back to displaying total mileage instead. Any suggestions? (Dynamic)
