Hi. Can anyone tell me if the 2003 Citroen Xsara Picasso automatically resets to the correct mileage if you replace the speedometer clocks (digital display) with a secondhand piece? My garage has replaced mine that were 57,000 miles with one that is 97,000 miles and we had been told that it might be because he got one from an earlier model car. Can anyone help?

I bought a Citroen Xsara Picasso last week and, having done just over 100 miles, it suddenly started beeping and telling me to stop as the engine is overheating. I only topped the water up a few days ago but on checking I found that it was virtually empty. I have filled it again but it is still saying that the engine is overheating. It also chucks out a fair bit of black smoke at high revs. Does anybody know what it may be? Thanks. (2.0 hdi)

How do I change a cambelt on my Citroen Xsara Picasso?

Answers

Hi there, I changed my cambelt and waterpump while I was at it on my Picasso Xsara 2.0 hdi 2002. It was pretty easy. A few bolts undo to remove the cambelt cover (don’t forget the awkward one down the back of the bulkhead) - a 10mm ratchet spanner is really helpful here. Bottom pulley must come off to get the bottom cover off - 22mm decent spanner and a good pull. As long as flywheel is locked this is pretty easy... The hardest part was removing the starter motor to get a locking pin into the flywheel but afterwards I needed to change the bottom pulley and realised you can lock it without taking it off. I used an 8mm length of threaded rod bent in such a way as to get the flywheel locked by guiding it into the hole in the casting just to the side of the starter without putting my hands through all the pipes and stuff. Just push on the rod whilst turning the engine via the bottom pulley till it pops in. There are two holes in the flywheel, you need to check the alignment of the camshaft pulley at about the 11 o’clock position to make sure you have the correct one. This too needs locking with an 8mm bolt / drill. Then its all plain sailing, slacken the tensioner and remove old, fit new. I would advise changing water pump while apart (4 or 5 10mm bolts). Then put it all back together. Probably 2 or 3 hour job if all goes well. Belt and pulley kit cost me £45, water pump £20, Aux belt £10 all off eBay. Hope this helps - Matthew from Yorkshire

My Citroen Xsara Picasso makes a whining noise when driven. I have been told that it is the air con pump and it can be bypassed with a shorter belt? Has anybody got any information as to whether this is true?

Answers

Hi, I’m having the exact same problem on my cassie. Yes it is true you can bypass it, but you just won’t be able to use the air con. I’m getting mine replaced instead so I’ve had to buy an air conditioning pump, which I’m taking a risk on a used one from eBay £38.40 as opposed to £270 new, and I’m now looking for a fan belt tensioner and fan belt, because if you keep taking the fan belt off (which you need to to check the air con pump), it loses tension, so my car has come back now even more squeaky than it was when I took it to get looked at lol. All in all my garage has quoted me £90 to fit the lot when I get the parts. It’s worth doing in my opinion. Good luck with it - Jodie Horton from England

Why has my car started locking itself when I drive? It has only just started doing it. (2.0 Desire Diesel)

Answers

It is an option you can turn on or off. When you are in your car with the key engaged but parked up, if you press and hold the lock doors button on your dashboard it will ping at you and tell you if the auto door lock is engaged or disengaged. As yours seems to be engaged (ie. auto lock the doors when you start to drive above a few miles an hour) by pressing and holding you will disengage the auto locking. If you want to engage it again simply repeat the press and hold until it tells you it has changed the status - Lee Martin from England

Citroen Xsara Picasso 2002

I have a problem with my Citroen Xsara Picasso`s clutch. My problem started as a shuddering when I put the car into first gear or reverse, or at low revs. Then a while later it started making a noise when engaged and this went on for a couple of days. I don’t use my car much so this is why it has stretched out over a good month or so. Last week my alternator burnt out and I replaced it. so that is now fine. A day later I drove my car a few miles down the road and back and the shuddering seemed to get a bit better but the noise was louder, like a squeaking noise. The next morning I got into the car and couldn’t select any of the gears while the engine was running. When the engine is off I can put it into gear. Then the pedal stuck at floor level. I have had the system bled. The pedal returned to the top but wouldn’t engage the gear with the first pump, but on depressing the pedal twice it would engage. Has anyone had this problem, or can someone offer advice? Thanks. (diesel)

Answers

Hi, I had the same problem, get your clutch checked ASAP. Mine got progressively worse whilst driving back to work then something gave out and now my car won’t even start for me to begin any kind of elimination process. My best guess is the plates have disintegrated and some sort of sensor has gone. Parts are £107+ I’ll be saving on labour by doing it myself, but I’m pretty sure it’ll work out cheaper for you in the long run if you get it repaired before it causes secondary damage - Lee Palmer from Devon

I keep getting a really bad smell of fuel coming into my Citroen Xsara Picasso. I`ve had it checked and they can`t find anything wrong. Also when I take the fuel cap off there is a lot of suction. This car has been regularly serviced and has only covered 70k from new with a documented history. Can anyone help please?

Answers

I have the same problem and have tracked it down to one on the injectors leaking. If you lift the plastic cover from the top of the engine (it just lifts off) you will be able to see the injectors in a row running left to right. If one of these looks wet and oily it will be that that is causing the smell of diesel. I do not know if it is a common fault or if it is a seal in the injector but you’re better off checking if the pipe is loose first before starting to dig deeper. Hope that this helps - Graham Hodge from Lancashire

I have just bought a Picasso 2004 from a dealer. I road tested a week ago, locking worked. Picked it up on the 1st May 2012, no locking. I bought a battery from Maplin’s, £3.59 or so. It stopped working again. I dived in and found one of the battery retaining clips had came adrift from the PCB. I resolderd it and all is now fine. Somebody had fitted the wrong battery which caused the break. Make sure you have the correct battery. Hope this helps somebody - Mark Browning from Hampshire

Was the original repair in the vicinity of the pump? Could be a wire pulled off failing that try to locate its fuse. Hi. My C5 did this over Christmas. It turned out to be a faulty resistor unit located to the left of clutch pedal held in by two 6mm bolts. It’s a 10 minute job to replace unit, cost me £38 off ebay - John Hollingworth from England

Hi. I have the exact same model and it did the very same thing. They had to wire in a new relay and it worked well after this. That said, from day one of buying this car I have had problem after problem and has cost me more in repairs than the car did itself! Including drive shaft, fuel pump, brake switch (which I now have to turn every couple of weeks otherwise the brake light stays on), rear brake cylinders on both sides (which also meant I had to replace the brake shoes), clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder (the clutch now sticks to the floor every couple of weeks which is due to a plastic clip holding the cable to the pedal, easily clipped in place but annoying), ABS Sensor, Cat and suspension bush. Not to mention the usual mid and rear exhaust, tyres, oil fitler, air filter, fuel filter, wiper blades and numerous light bulbs. Now the engine management light is on and is making a horrid grinding noise! My advice - GET RID!!!! David from Buckinghamshire

Hi, we are having a few problems with our 53 plate 2.0 HDI exclusive Xsara Picasso, which we bought two months ago and we were wondering if anyone had any ideas? First the brake lights have started coming on when the CLUTCH is depressed and then do not go off again until you actually press the brake or you lift the clutch pedal up slightly with your foot any ideas? Also in the past week the car has started losing power at random times however it has occurred more when leaving a junction or when going up from 4th to 5th gear. If anyone knows the answers we would be grateful. My partner is very good with cars but he is away at the moment and the nearest Citroen garage is over an hour away. (2.0 HDI Exclusive)

Answers

I’m reliably informed that it’s down to the brake light switch behind the brake pedal. Mine is a JFK and has the same issue just not got round to sorting it out. The power loss is apparently something to do with the engine thinking the brakes have been applied. Next time it does it, keep the throttle steady and hook the brake pedal up with your other foot and the power comes back straight away. The part is about £10 from Euro Car Parts. Hi all, I recently purchased Y reg (2001) Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.8L Petrol. I am baffled by the fuel consumption. I reset the trip computer and filled 30 liters worth of petrol. At 70 miles, the fuel indicator is already on the bar before the red, and the trip computer says I have less than 80 miles before fuel empties. I travel 55 miles to work. Of this, 40 miles is spent of motorway, while the rest constitutes of mainly A- road drive and little urban drive. I can’t get my head round to think I would have to spend nearly £185 worth of fuel per week for something I used to spend £70 max on my old Vauxhall Corsa 1.4L. Could there be anything wrong with the car? I am really worried just after a week of purchase. (SX)

There appears to be another panel on the underside of the mirror, could this help if I removed it? All help and suggestions gratefully received. Thank you.

You have to remove the plastic interior panel to reveal the bolts that hold the mirror onto the door. There is a connector that will allow you to remove the whole mirror. The mirror itself is held on by a wire "clip" that allows you to prise it off to reveal the wires behind. Once you replace the wire, you can just push the mirror back on. Well now, the fault I have is simple. The car gets warm, 2 bars on the gauge, then sometimes wants to stall and lacks power. So it now has a new coil pack, plugs, exhaust manifold due to a crack and the fact the lambda sensor was welded in. A good oil change and flush sump leaks cured temperature sensor so it runs fantastically then just goes like it was before. I have a crankshaft sensor coming tomorrow, if this does not work I will fill the car with high explosives and set it alight on New Years Eve... after I have taken all the new parts off. Any ideas what’s wrong? (1.6 petrol)

Hi, my problem is that I filled the car with fuel, replaced the locking cap but when closing the flap I noticed that it did not close flush with the surrounding bodywork of the car. After having a closer look it seems that a pin or whatever it is that the flap pivots has either fallen out or is broken. Can this pin, or whatever it is, be replaced without having to pay out for a complete replacement unit, plus getting the flap sprayed up to match the colour of the car? Thanks in advance for any advice given. (2.0 Ltr HDi)

Speedo works, but the right hand side of the info panel does not work. I am hearing a strange beep every now and again. The dealer thought it might be the speed alarm that had been set to various speed limits such as 20,30.40, etc. However, I have counted the time between beeps, and also noted what the vehicle was doing at the time of the beep, and can find nothing that makes any sense. I’ve tried cancelling and resetting the info panel (which doesn’t work) by holding in the right hand stalk for about a minute.... but to no avail. I’d very much appreciate any info on this one. Regards, Alex.

Just today I was driving the car at 40 mph and suddenly the car lost speed and didn’t pick up for a moment when I accelerated. It then recovered itself and drove on normally enabling me to complete my journey of around 14 miles. Later, when my wife came back from the shops, she switched the motor off and took the key out but the motor kept going. She put the key back in again and waited a moment and then turned it off successfully. Grateful for any ideas.

Hi, we had the same problem on our Citroen Dispatch. I took it to a place called Surestart Diesel in Doncaster, they deal with most diesel vehicle issues and ours turned out to be a sensor on the con rail - fuel system issue. Hi, can anyone help? I keep on having a warning coming up on the dash of my Citroen Xsara Picasso saying top up water. I have done this and it still keeps coming up?

Answers

Hello, I had the ’top up water’ warning come on a few times on my ’04 Picasso. I scratched my head over it for a while then it turns out the coolant was very low, I did a full coolant change and now keep an eye on it with a regular check and top up. Not had the warning come back - Steven Large from England

Mine does the same, every year, the minute the temperature drops below 13C degrees. I’ve checked the water and the coolant numerous times, as has my mechanic. The mechanic says it’s just a sensor (and my car’s way of complaining about the weather). I couldn’t be bothered to change it. If you are certain that your fluid levels are good, just press the "book" button on the dash display until the message goes away - Faye from Oxfordshire

Hi, have you checked the rear washer water pipe is connected? This can be found on the inside of the boot. I had the same problem - Lisa from Kent

I’ve had this happen with my rear washer, open tailgate and prise out plastic grill [top right] found plastic pipe had hardened and come off connector, slid it back but only a month later exactly the same, this time a dab of super glue firmly fixed it in place; that was a few years back, still on. If your fault is not pipe related, it sounds like you will need to remove pump from bottle and thoroughly clean the non return valves which may be gummed up [according to forums] - John Holmes from Yorkshire

I have recently bought a 2000 plate Picasso 2.0 HDi and although it’s not the most refined or stylish car I have ever owned, it does so many other things right i.e great space for three kids and the fuel economy beggars belief. I sometimes wonder if it will ever run out but here are the couple of niggles I have that I need help with. The car has only just done 74k which for the year is fantastic. It has just had a cambelt change and full service aswell but for the last couple of days, it has been playing up. When I turn the key in the ignition, it is completely dead. No electrical noises, no lights on the dash, nothing. Even when I try to lock the car, nothing. My question is could this be an issue with a dead battery or something more sinister? Up until now, I have had no display warnings related to the battery or any other issue, what could it be? Also when driving from cold, I find the gearbox very stiff. Any suggestions or advice gratefully received. Many thanks. (2.0HDI)
