When I'm driving along the car starts to lose power and the the petrol gauge reading goes up and up until it reaches its max and then goes blank. If I pull over and really rev the car it sorts it for a while and the petrol gauge reading starts to come down and returns to normal. I've changed the petrol filter, had a diagnostic test which showed nothing, they've said it's not the fuel pump either. It drives me mad as I have to pull over to rectify the problem a lot, it feels like something is blocked but no one seems to know what's wrong? Thanks

Citroen Xsara Picasso

Hi all the brake lights are out on the car, could this be a fuse or something else? I would be grateful for any help. Thanks Stevie

Answers

Yes, and yes. Have you checked the fuses? If so have you replaced it (even if it looks ok), and did this make any difference? If you did and there is still no lights, I have known on other vehicles the wires to the switch on the back of the brake pedal to come off, meaning no signal is sent. Depending on your driving style and position of wires it can sometimes be kicked off. Otherwise could be any number of things - I assume driving lights and fogs work? This rules out likelihood of a break in the wiring loom - good luck dave from Merseyside

Hi, I have just had a new tyre fitted and due to excessive inside wear on the replaced tyre I also had the tracking done on their advice. Problem now is steering wheel is approx 5 degrees out when driving in a straight line and I keep getting an ESP failed warning on the dash whilst driving and the traction control is disabled. I also have had a couple of occasions when driving in a straight line that the traction control kicks in (I can feel the judder as it controls power to the driving wheels) and then I get the failed warning message. The garage had it back and the diagnostics showed a steering wheel sensor error, which they say they reset, however I am yet to have a journey where this does not still come on - I have done journeys of less than 2 miles and some over 40. The garage are happy to have it back and have said they will remove the steering wheel and line it up again, but I need to be confident that this will fix the problem and NOT cause more issues? Any advice gratefully received - is this connected to the work done, or just an unfortunate coincidence?

Answers

If you have had the tracking done on your car and the steering wheel has moved when driving, the normal reason is because tracking has been adjusted on one side only or adjusted more on one side than the other instead of even adjustment. If they take the steering wheel off and turn it round and refit you will find when you put the indicators on and turn it, it will not switch them off properly.Roy bains from Durham

I get that especially during hot weather, just a brief whiff and then it passes. I asked the (private) service garage guys in Styal before I moved to France, the main Citroen having been unable or unwilling to give an answer. This garage, M S & J Motors, charged a third of what the main Citroen garage in Manchester next to the University charged and they did a better job. The boss told me that there was a vent to the petrol tank and during hot weather, when the vapour pressure inside the tank could rise and affect the flow of petrol to the carburettor, the petrol vapour was allowed to vent briefly to the atmosphere. I have a 12yo Picasso C4 and it is exceedingly reliable. Robin Marshall from France

Since I bought this car the key had no transponder in it but the car ran fine till 2 weeks ago. The heaters started and stopped, the key stuck in the lock with the engine still running. I finally got the key out, it says immobiliser fault so I bought a new ignition barrel and keys. I`m having trouble trying to remove the barrel as the key won`t turn the lock. How else can I get the barrel off and how will I get the immobiliser to go off, as it is on just now? The car makes a noise to start but obviously can`t because the immobilser is on. Can I bypass the immobilisers or what can I do if I do not have a key with transponder, as the new set I bought doesn`t have one either? When the car broke down the breakdown guy was puzzled when he saw the old key, didn`t know how I was managing to drive the car, so I had to get it towed home. Any help would be appreciated thanks, Wilma

I have a problem with two Picasso's. My dad own the same vehicle as I do, and has exactly the same problem. While I am driving the gas pedal seems to disengage for no reason at all. So I can be driving and suddenly it would appear as if I took my foot of the gas, only problem is I did not. The engine would not cut out, it idles fine. So to get the vehicle to the side of the road, I can run it against the diesel compression. So I can put it in 1st gear, release the clutch, and it would accelerate to about 8Km/h, without needing to use the gas pedal (it does not work anyway. Using this method I can reach 48km/h in fourth gear. If you turn the engine of and let it stand for 5 minutes or so, the problem is sorted as if nothing was wrong. The problem is not always as bad. Sometimes if I can feel that the problem starts, I would just release the pedal, and engage again, and it would work. But sometimes it needs a 5 minute rest. Big problem when you are traveling on the highway. Any suggestions please?

Answers

Could be a faulty brake pedal switch. Check that your brake light is not on when this fault happens. The brake pedal switch not only puts the brake light on but also cuts out the fuel pump. Try when you`re driving just slightly touching the brake pedal so your rear lights come on and see what happens? lucan turner from Gwent

The correct answer to the question above is to change the diesel filter. The fuel pump isn't connected to the braking system in any way. The filter becomes blocked over time and is not able to supply enough fuel when needed, that's why it happens when at speed and not when on tick over. Hope this helps. Lee garner from West Sussex

That is most probably the cause of your problem, but I thought you said you`d done the filter? Anyway if the diesel shut off is connected through the brake switch circuit, try it, drive slowly in second and slightly put your foot on the brake pedal and see or hear what happens to the engine revs lucan turner from Gwent

Hi I have Picasso hdi 2.0 2003 and two weeks ago it started to use fuel more than normal (2l/100km more). I've noticed that it`s using more fuel on acceleration and then is getting stable, that's why it`s using more fuel only in city driving. There is no warning light on, the car is driving normaly. I have a 53 plate Xsara Picasso purchased from new. Last September at service the timing chain was changed at 105,000miles. Drove over to a Spain and one day the car lost power and stopped. It would not start straight away. After 10 mins however started and drove okay, but engine management light came on. Next day took to Citroen main dealer in Spain. They did diagnostics and together with ODBC faults, P0340 and P0400 there was a brake light fault! They fixed these faults, cleared the engine management light and all was okay - for approx 25 miles when engine management light came on!! Took back to Spanish garage who checked settings, cleared the fault light and sent me on my way. Next day, 25 miles later the fault light came back on again. Brought car back to UK and took it to a Citroen main dealer. Explained the problem, they charged £65 for diagnostics test, rechecked timing and sensors, cleared the fault light and told me all was okay. 25 miles later engine fault light came on again. Have since had car back at local service garage twice to recheck timing and sensors. But each time I leave garage 25 miles later the engine fault light comes on!! This is really frustrating!!! This week after a 2 wk wait for an appointment I took the car to the local Citroen main service centre in Essex who assured me that if I paid for a diagnosis they would be able to give me a report on what needs to be done to repair my car. The diagnosis highlighted faults P0340 and P0400. The engineer explained that if they checked the timing it MIGHT sort out the problem, failing this, if they checked the timing sensors and exhaust gas sensors this MIGHT sort out the problem!! The cost of their repairs costing me £1000. After I reminded them that these had been checked already both by Citroen garage and independents they advised that MAYBE the problem may be with the ECU!! They obviously don't know! Has anyone any similar problems?? How were they resolved? Remember the car is running okay for past 10 months with the irritant of an engine fault light illuminated. As I intend giving this car to my daughter, is it likely to break down?? I would rather scrap the car than to give her an unsafe vehicle. Any advice please would be appreciated. Thanks

Can anyone suggest if there is any waterproofing material I can spray onto and therefore waterproof the ECU? I have heard of turning it upside down so that the water from the temperature sensor does not percolate into the ECU, but I have been thinking about silicon, copper-ease, white lithium grease, even wax melted onto the pins then pushing the multi-plugs back on and then hope that would seal it and stop water in-grease into the com box itself?

Take the gear stick boot cover off. Remove two screws, lift side flaps on radio and remove two screws. Prise off whole mounting plate at the top. This will reveal the air con controls. Remove 4 screws and drop backwards and on the back you will find 3 twist in bulb units. Replace the bulbs and replace all in reverse order. a shann from Argyll and Bute

My speedo is showing my speed is faster than the speed I am doing. Can anybody tell me what can be causing the problem? My car is a 2002 Picasso 1.8 petrol

Answers

If the solution to your problem is something highly technical then I'm afraid I can't help. However, just in case, I do know that wheel size affects this. Your speed is calculated by the spin count of the axle. Putting smaller than standard wheels on a car can increase the speed of rotation of the axle showing a higher mph, due to the smaller circumference of the wheels. Vice versa, fitting 20 inch rims to a Vw Polo would show a much slower speed on the dash than is actually occurring. Note that changing the size of the wheels changes the final drive ratio of the gearbox, meaning it can be too hard for a car to turn big wheels, compared to smaller ones. Another solution could be the old story that some cars show a 10% difference in speed to reality, so doing 33mph by the speedo would be 30mph in reality. I do not know if this is true though. Again, if it's a more technical problem, then my answer is technically redundant! David R from City of Glasgow

Eg it's slow and regular on idling and speeds up when accelerating. it starts a minute or so after starting the car and continues until you turn the engine off. It seems to be coming from the rear of the engine behind the spark plugs. someone suggested valve lifter sticking but I've changed the oil and flushed the engine. It doesn't appear to affect the running , it's just annoying. Any suggestions???
