Citroen Dispatch 2000

Please can someone help us to solve this mystery? My mate`s Citroen Dispatch van`s ignition doesn`t work. When you turn it on the glow plug, battery and handbrake light come on, but one more twist to the ignition position and nothing happens. You can bump it and it starts. There`s a faint glow plug, battery and handbrake light on when the ignition is off. We have replaced the starter motor and the solenoid but there is no difference. We have tried starting it straight off the battery and strangely just the black neutral jump lead on it`s own makes it turn over but not start. We have checked all of the fuses in the engine and glove compartment with only no 1 blown, so we swapped it but it didn`t make any difference except the battery light on the dashboard which used to be off is now on. We have taken apart every electrical compartment/ housing and removed all the relays and the dim dashboard lights didnt go off. The only thing we think it could be is a wire somewhere shorting out and feeding back to the dashboard, but can`t see where? Has anyone got any ideas how to check if a wire is shorting? The only testing kit I’ve got is one of those meters in my electrical screwdriver kit. The van is too old to have an immobiliser because it`s V reg. The engine / ignition cut out a few times before finally stopping but it used to restart until now. Please can anyone help?

My Citroen Dispatch 2005 has a flat spot when accelerating in slow moving traffic. When this happens I get a quick plume of white smoke as the flat spot goes. I have changed the fuel filter and added an injector cleaner. There is no flat spot when changing gear in fast moving traffic. Any ideas? (1.9d)

Can anyone suggest why my Citroen Dispatch`s speedometer and mileometer have stopped working?

Answers

One of the fuses in the fuse board behind the glove compartment on the passenger side makes the speedo and mileometer work/ not work. Check if it’s blown and replace. Remember which one as I have taken every relay and fuse out of my mate’s Dispatch diesel 2000 to try and work out why ignition doesn’t work but still has a dim battery, handbreak and glow plug lighting up on dash board. I think it must be a wire shorting somewhere and feeding back but can’t find it yet. works fine if you bump it though!!! Andy Howard from Oxfordshire

I have fitted a new ignition lock but my Citroen Dispatch still won’t start. Can I bypass the immobiliser and if so how?

Answers

Does it start with a spare key? If not it could be the sensor ring around the ignition barrel. To have a key coded, you need the card which came with the car so the garage can program a new key. If no card, then you will probably need a new transponder - Craig Cooke from Cambridgeshire

I had my Citroen Dispatch’s battery disconnected for a week and on reconnection the van wouldn’t start. There is fuel in the tank, no electrical work has been touched. Do you think it might be the immobilizer? If so is there a way to reset it? (2-litre HDI)

Answers

In the owner’s handbook, it states that after a lengthy spell of the battery being disconnected, the procedure for restarting the engine is to turn on the ignition then wait 10 seconds before you keycode your radio, then continue to turn the igniton and start engine. Unfortunately I didn’t do this, so according to Citroen, I need to take the vehicle into the dealership for computer diagnosis minimum £90. I’d told them that fuel wasn’t being pumped up to the engine from the tank and asked was there anything I could do as I thought that the immobiliser had told the pump not to operate, they said no, they weren’t very helpful at all, so I disconnected the pump and ran a 12volts feed direct to the pump and it worked, my neighbour turned the engine over at the same time and it started, so I went to an auto electricians bought a relay and a control switch for less than £10 and wired up the pump, it took me about four hours with all the messing about but I saved at least £90, which is more than most get paid for four hours work, unless you’re a robbing Citroen dealership who seem to have a licence to print money, the van works fine now, end of my rant - Stewart Gourlay from Lincolnshire

There is an intermittent problem using 4th gear. All other gears OK. The problem usually happens after about 20 minutes. By pressing clutch pedal and a little bit of force it will go into gear. I have just had a part fitted which took out excess play in gear stick which feels a lot better, part cost £130.
