Good afternoonWe have a Citroen C5 that was currently off road for 18 months. When we went to replace the tyres the garage said that there might be a slight leak of Hydraulic fluid and to get it checked. We took it to our local garage who advised that they couldn't find a fault in the pipes and rang a Citroen dealer to discuss. They advised that this is a common issue and is where the pipe 'sweats' (sorry if this is the incorrect term!) and we should not be concerned. There is still a little fluid on our driveway. Is this something anyone else in the know has come across before and is this correct? Many Thanks

I have replaced my fog light bulbs with new bulbs only to find they are not working, even when the engine is running they still will not work, the fog light lamp appears on the the dash console and i have checked the fuses and all seem fine, i reckon it is down to the electrical relay but i can't seem to find them anywhere, i have checked under the bonnet next the fuses, in the glove box next to the fuses and in the boot behind all the lining but all to no avail. Am i missing something? I was hoping someone might point me in the right direction with this problem if possible. Many thank's in advance, Graham.

Hi, My 2005 C5 petrol has only done 27000 miles twice the engine has started to shake and shudder no power and engine warning light has come on, this has happened twice in the last three weeks,it was serviced end January. the car ESP light has come on permanently, After a short period of stopping the Car for around Ten minutes it will start and run as per normal, a computer diagnostic has shown nothing , no Log entry for the day time of the Engine misfiring or misbehavior, is shown in the Engine management computer. I personally have not been in the car when this has happened it was being driven by my wife and she is getting worried about driving it at all. today we both went a run over twelve miles did some shopping then drove back, then parked the car two hours later my wife drove the car a mile then the engine started to shake and shudder, she stopped for ten minutes, restarted then drove about Five miles to do a massage and back to the house without any trouble engine serviced every year since purchase, the only thing showing is the ESP light

Hi, I have bought a c5 2.0 l hdi auto with a 6 speed box. The car drives brilliantly with no faults at all for the first 15 to 20 mins but after that the car will randomly fall out of gear and then when you take your foot off the acellorater and let the revs fall back down the car will then fall back into gear sometimes with a fud depending on how quick you are traveling . I have took the car to Citroen and they just charged me £224 for resealing the gearbox and changing the gearbox oil which did not fix the problem and then just said it would need a replacement gearbox. If any body could help me with their thoughts I would be most grateful . Many thanks James moore

I have just recently bought my C5 and I have a brake warning light and stop light that come on sometimes when I turn a corner, together with the anti pollution warning. I have had it checked out by a garage with a diagnostic and it is still there and they don't know what is wrong. It drives fine other than the day lights come on and off on their own when I indicate, and my wipers go really fast for no reason and when that happens my windows go up and down only once. I would appreciate any suggestions on these matters. Thank you.

My car sits down at the back when the engine is off. Why?

Answers

In simple terms there are four balls one in each corner and a central Ball pressure Unit under the bonnet, but there is also a Balance unit between the front and back which could be faulty, each ball has a split pressure gasket one side is flued the other air pressured if the gasket is burst or split internally then as soon as there is no Back pressure to hold the car up when the engine stops the Ball cannot hold the flued it moves into both sections and the car sinks as the flued moves into the top section. it could be the central Balance unit or both back balls have burst inside If you are going to replace two ball then see if you can afford to do them all as it is worth it as soon as you drive it is like a new car. I replaced all of them and what a difference to the drive control and comfort. I got another 40000 plus before I sold it I saw it after the car auction at a yard and the Balls were gone within two weeks. Alexander Collins from West Lothian

Hi. I have an annoying squeek behind my glovebox that only starts when to vehicle is moving.I have emptied everything out of the glovebox and removed the fuse panel cover so nothing in there could move but to no avail I have also switched the interior fans off and it continues. It sounds like plastic bottles in plastic wrap rubbing together.I have also cancelled out the glovebox lid.I can only come to the conclusion that something is loose behind there as this only happens when the vehicle is moving. How do I get behind that part of the dashboard?I was wondering if anyone had had this problem. Any advice will help as this noise is an hindrance to listening to good music

Answers

You can remove the cardboard/carpet over passengers feet it's only held on by self tappers and comes away easily. but don't move it any more than you have to. You have to be a contortionist to do this and will need a torch. It may be the front bumper/ nosecone on that side. That is held onto the wing by a twist fastener, undo that by a quarter turn, lift the plastic bumper bit till it butts up against the wing proper, retighten twist fastener. I have the opposite, when I switch the engine off there is a squeek from the rear of the engine ! Steve from Yorkshire

Hi, the suspension of my C5 estate has stuck in the lowest setting, making the car unsafe to drive. There is no sound coming from the suspension pump and there are no warning lights at all. I checked the suspension fluid container (didn't know where it was until I found info on Internet) and it was empty (oops). Refilled with LDS but it made no difference. Button & dashboard level lights are working as normal, just no movement. Any help would be appreciated please!

Answers

Hi, could now just be air in the system. Get a long screw driver or piece of pipe or wood. Place it on the suspension pump under the bonnet on the right hand side under the fluid reservoir. Place end on motor away from moving parts like the belts etc. and the place on the bone behind your ear, this way you can tell and hear if the motor is going or not. Do this when the engine is stopped then do it when then engine is going so you can tell the difference. But sometime the pump does not go if their is enough pressure in the system, so you may have to do it's few times to tell. So if air in system which it could be, as it ran out of fluid. But you need to see where it is loosing the fluid. Not difficult as fluid leaves an oily mark in parts and normally if loosing this much it will be dripping on the ground. Park where the road is clean and look under it in the morning it should leave fluid below the leak. My other answer for air in C5 should explain to you how I bleed C5, suspensions, and us how the Haynes Book explains it also. You must fix leak or it will happen again, unless it is a slow leak, but will get worse, so will need to. Be done in the end.hope this fixes, from New Zealand. Ged from New Zealand

I have a Citroen C5 2006 auto and am losing drive on the motorway, all gear lights come on. Any suggestions please?

Answers

Update / Correction ... and apology ! My current car - a C5 - with the Motorway-jumping-out-of-gear problem is a SIX speed Diesel Auto, not 5-speed ... and the gearbox type is an AM6 B, according to the supplying dealership. JM Anonymous from

Not an answer but an observation and hoping to get help from any answers you get. My 55 reg C5 (2-litre Diesel 5-speed Auto) occasionally jumps out of gear, especially on motorways, dual carriageways and up-hills, and IF I ever kick-down to overtake, which I never do these days to avoid the problem. I get no warning lights, just a sudden jump out of gear into neutral and the engine revving until I lift off and wait a second, then it goes back into gear and drives as normal. It first did it at around 65,000 miles and now it is on 88,000 miles. I understand the AL4 gearbox can be worked on by auto specialists but the other type (AM6/DPO?) has to go back to a Citroen base. I don’t know which I have! I have this car as a direct dealership swap for the C4 - Petrol 4-speed Auto which gave a resounding thump, like a kick in your back, whenever it was asked to slow down gently with no throttle or brakes, for example approaching the back of a traffic queue. 4th to 3rd "Thump", 3rd to 2nd "Thump", so I took it back to the dealer a day or two after purchase (it had only done c.14,000 miles) and they removed and replaced the whole Auto Transmission (they said) at a cost of £4,500 because they found some filings in the bottom of the gearbox. Collecting it after repair I found it STILL did it, but now worse than before. This time they decided it must have been a bad batch of gearboxes in stock at Coventry so they would have to get one from France. They removed the replacement and fitted ANOTHER new Auto Transmission!! (Another £4,500 they said). The fault was JUST AS BAD as ever, so I asked for a refund, repair or replacement. They refused all 3 so I had to embark on Court action and was in direct conversation and correspondence with a Director of the Motor Group concerned. Eventually, very close to the Court hearing date, and after offering me several replacements at £2,000 to £2,500 cost above what I had paid for the defective C4, they finally found and supplied THIS C5 as a direct exchange. From a Petrol C4 with 4-speed Auto to a one-year-newer Diesel 2-litre C5 with 5-speed Auto it seemed acceptable. But now I have the Auto problem described above. Before the actual swap took place I took the C4 to a friend in West Wiltshire who is one of the country’s top Auto Specialists and he immediately said it had not needed ANY replacement gearboxes !! The fault was in the electronic/computer linkage between the throttle and the gearbox which were not talking to each other. It would have cost £200 and taken a max of 2 hours to replace the little electric box of tricks! I never had the heart to tell the dealer, so maybe this is me receiving pay-back! I have since seen the poor old C4 being driven by its new owner so maybe he doesn’t mind a kick in the back as he slows down. Anyway - best wishes for getting to the bottom of your problem. John Miller from Sussex

Answers

Does it only happen when it rains ? Which then is a leak which could be drain holes blocked where the rain water runs out though holes under the plastic shroud underneath the wiper blades. Small parts of leaves and dirt can block them. Not to sure of the C5 yet, but my Xantia, this was completely blocked with leaves and the water just ran in. But to completely cure this problem on the Xantia I covered the wiper motor with an Ice Cream Plastic 2litre container cutting the sides like it having 4 legs on the corners. This covered the motor and channeled water away from going in the wrong place in heavy rain. To me many many Xantias must have leaked as my one would be no different than any other Xantia. Or put a Clean white tissue around where the water maybe coming in, so you can look to see if it is coloured or not as it could be from the heater unit. Hope this helps. But the Tissue will let you know if it is like brake fluid etc. but not sure if C5 allows leaking Brake fluid to leak in their if the Hydraulic cylinders leak. But the colour will tell you. Does it feel like hydraulic fluid. Ged from New Zealand

Answers

Hi, I also had this, and found that it needed bleed correctly, with air in it, it does not work correctly. The Haynes Book says to pressurise the reservoir container. I got a tubeless valve from a car tyre and cut and buffed the rubber off it until it is shiny. ( this gives you a valve stem, with the car tyre valve in it ) Remove the reservoir cap and then the rubber seal on the underside. As close as you can drill a hole through but make sure it is inside the threaded part if the container that the cap screws to so it will still seal with the rubber seal to the reservoir when the cap is put back on. It is only you who will know if you have the ability for this. If you drill the hole then push the valve though hoping it is as close to the centre part which is shaped to allow a breather hole, you. will see this, just have to be precise about it. Then cut a small round piece out of the seal or with a punch which is better as it makes a neat job. The valve has to be cut down in size a bit so it does not stick up and hit the bonnet when closed. ( the bottom of the vale can be cut down, yiu can see the vale up in the stem, so you can judge this. Then clean it all with lighter fluid or clean petrol so no oil. Then with Araldite 2 pack glue mix and glue in valve with just a little on the inside. Blow and clean all drilling plastic parts from cap as it will destroy the pump, so be clean. Have the valve just protruding above the inside cap surface, as it must seal, or it will not work, OK important. this way that sits into the rubber seal stopping the seal turning and blocking off hole for valve, when you tighten the cap down, then with enough fluid in the reservoir but suspension on the C5 must be on Low ( this is important, and is different than the Xantia etc. or when it is put up on high, oil goes everywhere as it is under pressure and over flows . So be careful. Can always put in more, best to be lower than higher. I get a small piece if wire ( thin and poke it though the slotted holes in the filler funnel, why they do this stupid funnel I do not know as you cannot see very well, as the oil is just light orange and does not show up easily. Use this as a dip stick, still difficult but with a torch or touch laying it flat on hand you can work out the fluid level, as it leaves an fluid mark on hand giving you the hight of fluid. Do not rush do it correct, so you do not have bloody oil everywhere. So only Half full is good as you can easily add more, important. Then with a small tyre compressor from Auto Shop my one is only 200mm long, so not a large compressor OK. But needs one with a gauge. The Haynes book. Say pressure pump it up to Say 5 Bar, I put 12 ft pounds into my one, no more as you do not want to blow it up. Is pressure helps to push the fluid through to bleed it. You would think you would have to open a bleed screw but no I have never had to do that. If trouble maybe you could open some of the bleeds on the suspension system, but make sure it has stands under it as you do not need it to come down on you - OK. Important and be safe. Start motor keep suspension button on low, and turn steering wheel left to right until all the noise goes away. I have done this to many Citroen C5, and just leave the valve in it. But if you got another cap you could keep the cap for another car.i must do that but have not found another cap yet. But the valve it their for the next time who ever owns it. They should have one on it anyway., but Citroen will not want us to do this work. The hight button can be used to see if it is working, BUT alway on low for the level reading. Hope this is what is wrong, but hopefully will help others. I have just done 2 of them this week. From New Zealand mechanic for 45 years. Ged from New Zealand
