I have a 53 plate Citroen Berlingo. I have just had a full new clutch replaced but now for some reason the engine management light is lit up on the dashboard and so are the battery and handbrake lights. My speedometer and rev counter don’t budge and my fuel gauge only goes to 2 bars high, no matter how much fuel is in the tank. Any ideas?

When I lift my fott off the accelerator of my Citroen Berlingo and the engine drops to around 2000rpm I get a warning buzzer and the stop sign lights up. This stops as soon as I accelerate again. I have no problems with starting and I don’t get the warning as I drive away initially. The engine seems fine apart from this and I have done a couple of longer journeys since this fault started with no obvious problems. Any clues?

Hi guys. I have a 2005 model Citroen Berlingo 1.4l petrol . My airbag light stays on when the car is running . I have taken it to many mechanics and they seem to scratch their heads. Any ideas? (1.4l petrol)

Answers

I’ve had the same problem for months. Like you, I’ve taken it to various mechanics who looked more than a little puzzled. Last week, I visited an old guy about a different problem and mentioned it to him. He laughed and told me he has fixed this problem hundreds of times. 99% of times it is caused by a faulty connection under the seat, check under the seat(s) both if you have passenger airbag fitted. There is a seat sensor to tell the system someone is sat there, this may be faulty, usually it is the cable from this sensor. It passes down to the seat slide rails and has a connecting plug just before going into the main loom. Disconnect and clean this plug refit and test. Should be fixed, or the problem may be the sensor itself - Michael from Northern Ireland

Just had a strange fault. Came in from shopping earlier today, brought in the shopping, went back out to the car to find the widscreen wipers going, the lights on full beam, the flashers going. The car was switched off and I had the key. Couldn’t turn any of them off and couldn’t start the car. After about five minutes the wipers stopped and everything was back to normal. Anyone got any ideas? Called the local Citroen garage who said they’d never heard of this before and hadn’t a clue what the problem might have been. Added problem is that with my wife being disabled, getting stuck in the middle of nowhere if this happens again, is not a good thought!

I bought a Citroen Berlingo van from a dealer 7 weeks ago which is 4 years old and had 32,500 miles on the clock. I was assured that this was the best deal for my work as a courier in London. I have had it back to the dealer 3 times causing me to lose work and have now been told that I burnt out the clutch myself and that I have to pay £150.00 for repairs as the warranty doesn’t cover wear and tear. Can anyone tell me where to go from here? Thanks.

Answers

If they are going to fit a clutch for £150.00, I would pay up and have the warranty on the clutch 12 months as standard. The £150 hardly covers the cost of a clutch kit - Mike Price from Wiltshire

Electrical problems with van. Once you activate the wipers they won’t turn off, but also turn on by themselves when you change the channels on the radio. Also radio keeps on scrolling through channels, even when in good signal areas. After you turn off ignition sometimes wipers will turn on for a split second on their own. Radio and wiper controls are all on right hand side of steering wheel is there a connection to this problem?

I need to know which type of Citroen Berlingo I have, 600 or 800? It’s not written on the van anywhere I can see and the log books just say it’s a Berlingo. It doesn’t give any more info. Also, how do you get off the back brake light to change a bulb?

Answers

As far as I know a 600 is the old 1.9ltr and 800 is the new hdi 2ltr. There are two black plastic butterfly screws and inside directly behind tail-light, screw these off anti-clockwise and the light will come out. Best of luck - Alan Bradshaw from Ireland

The 600 and 800 refers to the payload capacity and isn’t anything to do with the engines as I thought this myself too the 600 can carry up to 600kg and the 800, 800kg. This should be detailed on either the sticker inside the drivers door shut or on the vin plate in the engine bay - Ollied D from Northamptonshire

The locks engaged with me on the outside. Had to use the manual key to release the lock. Is it normal for the car to lock if left with the key in the ignition?

Citroen Berlingo 2005

Will the turbo on my Citroen Berlingo 600 turn off when a service is due? Will the engine restrict itself until the service light is reset? The van has just passed its MOT but it still won’t go any faster than 55mph.

Answers

No, I had an ’04 Berlingo and serviced it myself, had over 50,000 miles use out of it without resetting the service light, until the head gasket went. Berlingos have a "limp home" mode which limits them to 3000rpm when a fault is detected. When parked, see if you can rev the engine above 3000rpm. Is your engine warning light on? I have a problem with my turbo and the warning light is intermittent, however it is always limiting the engine to 3000rpm. Are you experiencing any other problems with lack of power, i.e. the turbo does not seem to be working at all, or is the acceleration still ok? It sounds like you need to check: EGR Valve Turbo and actuator. In my experience, the engine warning light does not always come on with turbo related faults, so a fault code may not have been generated. In English, this means if your Check Engine Warning light has not come on, garage diagnostic equipment will be of little use. Try and fault find it yourself first if you are capable. I am not an expert so any other help is welcome - Rich from Hampshire

When I brake, the handbrake light and stop sign comes on and it beeps? Can anyone help please what is the problem?

Answers

To be fair, I’d ignore it. I’ve ignored mine for months without any problems. All my brakes are new front and rear, plenty of brake fluid. The hand brake works fine but to be sure, on hills, I leave it in gear just incase - Richard Lee from Yorkshire

Check your brake fluid level, it’s going to be low, the only reason for it being low is two things 1. you’re lucky and it just needs topping up 2. brake pads are low causing system to use all brake fluid in reservoir thus throwing up a warning light - Paul S Stevens from England

Please help, I do not know what to do. I went to my car one morning and it would not start. On the dashboard, various lights came on, i.e. STOP red light and another warning light, while driving the car at times on the freeway. These lights came on especially when I approach a roundabout and need to slow down. My car is at a Citroen dealer for the last almost 2 weeks, and the computer they put onto the car, does not read what could be wrong? They called in an auto electrician and still can’t find what is wrong. Do I just give up on getting this car fixed? Is it possible that you could help me? I can pass information to the so-called experts that are trying to find the problem. Note: I also had the mobilizer replaced recently by a auto dealer. Not sure if this could also have had such an impact on the car, not to start? My e-mail address is marietjie[at]minddesign[dot]co[dot]za and contact number 0833276833.

I have just bought a citroen berlingo van 1595cc , an ’07 plate, diesel 75. The drive home was perfect and it was taken for a short five miles test run and ran fine. Two days later, upon inserting the ignition key, the ’STOP’ warning lamp and other remains lit. When the key is taken out, the warning ’STOP’ lamp stayed on. I had to call out the RAC who took out the battery connection to stop it. What is this problem? (1595cc 75)

Clouds of greasy fumes that smear the windscreen and a fishy smell? Heater matrix... kaput. You’ve probably had it burst. Antifreeze all over the footwell and had it repaired by now. Same thing happened to me. Warning to others, if your car starts emitting greasy steamy fumes on the inside windscreen. Get it seen to immediately. Waiting for it to burst is more expensive and difficult to fix - Cindy Powell from England

I have had a problem recently when driving through deep pools folowing heavy rain. The plastic stone chip guards under the wheel arches have become dislodged and get hooked on the tyres and are forced up making a horrendous noise. If this happens with water I dread to think what it will be like in snow. Is this a common problem? Also, is there any way to stop the windscreen wipers when set on intermittent from speeding up with the road speed of the car?
