Performance

The 1-Series Coupe is available with a choice of three engines, a 2.0 litre diesel (177bhp), the same engine but twin-turbocharged (204bhp) and a twin-turbo six-cylinder petrol (135i). The engine response is immediate and the twin turbos practically do away with lag. The engines in the 1-Series are smooth, energetic and very, very powerful.

Ride & Handling

A relaxing ride can be had on all but the worst roads. The steering is electrically-assisted and this does unfortunately result in a certain loss of feeling but the 1-Series handles very well with composure and stability. Front and rear grip is absolutely superb. Run-flat tyres will not allow the suspension to absorb some bumps that may be encountered.

Build Quality & Reliability

The interior of a BMW is always solid and well put together and the 1-Series Coupe is no exception. Unbreakable materials and controls have a quality feel. There is a complete absence of rattles and squeaks and the expected high build quality is evident both inside and outside the car.

Safety & Security

The 1-Series comes with six airbags plus traction and stability control as standard. The crash sensor that activates central locking release, hazard warning lights and fuel cut-off is the most impressive. Deadlocks also come as standard, as does anti-lock brakes and cornering brake control.

Space & Practicality

There is plenty of room in the front for two adults but the rear seats will be a tight-fit for adults and children alike. The boot space is generous for a coupe (370 litres).

Ownership & Value

The 1-Series Coupe introduced us to the full potential of Efficient Dynamics technology. Auto Start Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and energy-saving electric power steering are but a few of the innovations on offer. The 120d that we drove averages 58.9mpg and the CO2 emissions of just 128g/km make it a green car with low tax bills. Being a BMW, the residual values are extremely good. The 135i is a different kettle of fish altogether, high CO2 emissions and poor fuel economy equal high running costs.
