Vauxhall sold more vans at retail in the UK than any other manufacturer last year, according to the latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

In a year when van registrations grew 17.8 per cent to 303,097 vehicles, Vauxhall achieved an enviable result, alone responsible for selling 11,436 vans to small business. That marks a growth of 28.05 per cent increase for the brand compared to 2010.

The Luton-based manufacturer says its van sales were buoyed by the offer of four years’ zero cent APR finance, four years’ free servicing, a four year warranty and four years’ AA cover. Vauxhall topped the monthly sales charts in January, March, April, July, September and October. It is the first time in the company’s long history that it has finished top at retail on commercial vehicles over a calendar year.

What’s more, the Vivaro was the best selling van in the retail medium van segment with sales up 58.05 per cent year-on-year.

"Last year proved to be an excellent year for Vauxhall van sales," said Richard Collier, Vauxhall’s National Commercial Vehicles Sales Manager. "It’s fantastic news for Vauxhall that despite the uncertain economic outlook there’s still strong demand for fuel efficient, high quality vans with low running costs and excellent manufacturer support."

Vauxhall is the UK’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles with its Luton plant recently celebrating a decade of Vivaro production. Earlier this year the plant won the contract to build the next generation of Vivaro, securing local jobs for the next decade.

Vauxhall is expanding its range of special offers on its commercial range, in preparation for the changes to the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) charges coming in at the start of 2012.

With many commercial vehicle operators likely to soon consider changing their vehicles to avoid the charges, Vauxhall is offering savings of between £3,000 and £7,500 off a new van.

From 3 January 2012, vans (3.5 tonnes GVW and below) registered as new before 1 January 2002 will have to comply with daily LEZ charges. To help owners of older vehicles plan ahead and avoid the daily toll, Vauxhall’s London Retail Group is offering swappage savings to customers buying a new Vauxhall commercial vehicle before the end of March 2012.

Despite the LEZ changes relating to vehicles ten years and older, the London Retail Group will extend the savings to customers of vehicles first registered as recently as seven years ago. The savings on the Vauxhall range include £3,000 off a new Corsavan when you trade-in your old van, while those with bigger space requirements can get £7,500 off the list price of a new Movano.

Savings extend across almost the entire range with Astravan, Combo and Vivaro all included as well as all panel vans and chassis cabs along with the Vivaro 9 Seat Combi.

“Vauxhall’s outstanding commercial vehicle model range offers owner/operator and large fleet operations alike the durability, back-up and low whole-life costs they need,” said Richard Collier, Vauxhall’s National Commercial Vehicles Sales Manager. “With this exceptional offer, Vauxhall is once again supporting its customers with a compelling, value for money package together to meet their day-to-day needs in a tough economic environment. Vauxhall was the first manufacturer to offer eco-models across its commercial vehicle range and these too are part of our attractive swappage scheme.”

The Vauxhall London Retail Group network comprises 35 Vauxhall retailers in and around the M25. For further details see www.londonvauxhallvans.co.uk.

Following on from the launch of the GTC, Vauxhall has released the first official pictures of the new Astra VXR, which goes on sale from next year.

The new car, set to become one of the most powerful cars in its class and the fastest production car in Astra in Vauxhall’s history. Using the GTC’s platform and powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged direct injection engine, the Astra VXR produces 280hp of power and a massive 400Nm of torque, enough for it to achieve a top speed of 155mph.

While the Astra VXR is based on the new GTC, it also benefits from a raft of bespoke chassis modifications, transforming it into a focused, high-performance coupe. Setting it apart from all other current Astras is a specially developed mechanical limited slip differential, which works on the front wheels. In conjunction with the GTC’s sophisticated HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut), the LSD provides the Astra VXR with great lateral grip and traction through bends.

Further changes to the chassis include brakes developed by competition supplier, Brembo, and standard fitment of Vauxhall’s fully adaptive FlexRide system. In the Astra VXR, FlexRide features not only a Sport button, but a VXR button, offering drivers the choice of two, more focused stages of damper, throttle and steering control.

Much of the chassis sign-off was done at the Northern Loop (Nordschleife) of the Nürburgring, and was overseen by Le Mans 24-hour race winner, “Smokin’ Jo” Winkelhock. “We have devised a great package that will convince even the most experienced and enthusiastic drivers – and not just on the Nürburgring!” said Winkelhock.

Visual identifiers for the Astra GTC comprise a set of specially sculpted front and rear bumpers, side skirts, an aerodynamic roof spoiler and two exhaust tail pipes in a trapeze shape. Inside, the VXR’s cabin gets bespoke performance seats with embossed logos in the backs, a flat-bottomed VXR steering wheel and upgraded instruments.

The UK is by far the Astra VXR’s biggest market in Europe, so Vauxhall expects that sales interest in the car will be strong. More details, including pricing and on-sale dates, will be revealed early next year.

Having a signature look or a ‘family face’ is an important thing for any car maker but that doesn’t mean a brand’s models need all look the same.

Vauxhall designer Mark Adams said: "If you look at a family, they don’t all look the same – they have similarities." And that’s what he is looking for at Vauxhall.

Speaking at the launch of the new Astra GTC, the new hot hatch preceded by famous models such as the GTE and the Firenza, Adams added: "I have three kids but they are not clones, they might have my wife’s eyes and my mouth etc. You can see they are all part of the same family but they don’t look identical."

This is the approach being taken by the designers at Vauxhall. Adams said: "The front of our cars will be recognisable but the grille on the Astra will not be exactly the same as that on the Insignia or the Vectra."

He describes the identical fronts being adopted by some manufacturers as a ‘Russian doll’ effect, from small to large vehicles. This philosophy spreads through the rest of the car.

"The GTC is recognisable as an Astra but every panel has been changed. The only common parts are the door handles and the roof aerial."

Adams takes most pride in the muscular-looking rear of the car, with a steeply-sloping rear window providing the full coupe-effect although the roof-line remains remarkable high.

"I’m 6′ 4"," he added, "but I can still sit comfortably in the back."

The new GTC goes into UK dealerships at the end of November with a choice of engines ranging from 1.4-litre petrol to 2-litre diesel and prices ranging from £18,495 to £22,430.

Product manager Douglas McColm said the entry model starts at £1,350 below the current sector leader, the VW Scirocco and he expects Vauxhall to sell around 13,000 GTCs in a full year with a 50-50 split between retail and fleet.

As the colder months approach, Vauxhall is offering its usual Winter Safety Check, for £35, to help motorists prepare for the trickier driving conditions to come.

Fully trained Vauxhall Masterfit technicians carry out the checks, visually looking for any potential safety issues, ensuring that tyres are inflated to their optimum, perform any advised software updates and top up all vital fluids (500ml max.). Each Winter Safety Check customer will also receive an Autoglym Winter Care Pack, consisting of: 500ml de-icer, 500ml screenwash, an ice scraper and a Hi-Tech Interior Microfibre Cloth, worth £20.

“The Vauxhall MasterFit Winter Safety Check offers Vauxhall owners outstanding value and peace of mind that their vehicle is ready to face the winter months,” said Belinda Craik, Vauxhall Service Channel manager.

Vauxhall also asked Peter Rodger, Chief Examiner and Head of Driving Standards at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, for some top tips for motorists on driving in winter. Peter has provided the following advice:

Keep your windscreen clear and clean your windows inside the car as well

Check your car’s electrical systems are all working properly on a regular basis

Use the air-conditioning to keep the air dry and reduce any misting-up

Ensure your tyres have adequate tread (1.6mm is the legal minimum)

Keep tyre pressures at the levels in your car’s handbook

Plan your journeys and take weather conditions into account

Carry a suitable emergency kit in the car with you

In severe conditions, think hard about the need to travel

If you do have to drive on icy or snowy roads, drive very smoothly

Slow down gently by easing off the throttle and try to avoid applying the brakes

Peter added a final reminder to motorists: “Remember, the speed that you can stop from in a bus length on a dry warm day can take the whole length of a football pitch on ice.”

Automotive retail group, Vertu is investing millions in a new Vauxhall brand centre in Chingford. Calling it a ‘vote of confidence’ in the brand’s cars, Vauxhall says that the new centre shows faith in its cars at a time when the UK economy is near stagnant.

One of the top brands in the UK, Vauxhall recently strengthened its position by introducing its record-breaking Lifetime Warranty, further driving the firm’s success in the country. Now Vertu, which owns the Bristol Street Motors brand of outlets, plans to open the new centre in May 2012; just as a Vauxhall launch a host of new products. The Astra GTC will have been launched shortly before the centre opens, due to arrive in showrooms in November 2011. A roomy new Zafira Tourer will have launched in the new year and the flagship green car, the Ampera will launch in April 2012.

Robert Forrester Chief Executive of Vertu said: “We are delighted to extend our partnership with Vauxhall through the development of the Chingford dealership. This investment demonstrates our confidence in this partnership and the Bristol Street Motors business model and our commitment to investing in local economies and creating full-time sustainable employment opportunities.”

Duncan Aldred managing director of Vauxhall added: “We are very pleased to extend our partnership with Bristol Street Motors by jointly developing a new Vauxhall Brand Centre in Chingford. I am confident that, together, we will be able to brave tough market conditions building on the mutual strength of our brands and on our expertise in automotive retailing. I am particularly excited about our upcoming world class product portfolio and look forward to sharing this momentum with Vertu Motors.”

The new Bristol Street Motors outlet will cover 560 square metres and stretches over ground floor and mezzanine, giving it enough room to cater for 12 Vauxhall vehicles. The site will offer employment for 75 staff and easily accessible EV charging bays with twenty per cent of the energy used on site generated from renewable energy.

Debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show today, the Vauxhall has confirmed that its new Zafira Tourer model will be priced from £21,000-more than £1,200 less than its key rival-the Ford S-Max.

With order books set to open on November 1, 2011, the Zafira Tourer appears at the Frankfurt Motor Show in production-ready form with standard features set to include air conditioning, DAB, cruise control, MP3/Aux In connections, 6 airbags, 7-speaker sound system, active headrests, and Flex7 seating. Despite the competitive pricing, the new model is expected to be well equipped across all grades, from the base ES to the Exclusiv, SRi, SE and Elite trims.

The Zafira Tourer will be positioned above the current Zafira model in Vauxhall’s line-up.

The production car’s design has deviated very little from the concept shown in Geneva , illustrating design-chief, Mark Adams’ continued influence on the look of all new Vauxhall products.

While the Zafira Tourer will continue to use Flex7 seating, which set new standards for seven-seat integration in the original 1999 Zafira, the system has evolved radically in the new car to offer even greater levels of flexibility and comfort. Improved material quality, more cabin space further define the Zafira Tourer from its compact MPV Zafira sibling.

A new chassis, using key components from the Insignia, with a longer wheelbase (complementing its 190mm increase in overall length) and wider tracks, will better ride comfort than ever, the car maker says. Vauxhall’s acclaimed FlexRide adaptive damping system – a rarity in this class – will also be available as an option.

Vauxhall car leasing deals

A great emphasis has been placed on safety in the Zafira Tourer, with a plethora of driver-assist systems making a first appearance in the new model. Traffic Sign Recognition, Side Blind Spot Alert and Advance Park Assist – which helps drivers find an adequate parking space and guides them in to it – are among the option highlights.

Two new engines – a 1.4 Turbo petrol and a 2.0 CDTi diesel (with three outputs, including a 119g ecoFLEX version) – join a 1.8-litre petrol unit to offer a spread of power options from 110PS to 165PS.

UK order books for the Zafira Tourer will open on November 1 this year.
