Mitsubishi’s new small SUV car, the new 2012 ASX, arrives in the UK this week. Labelled an ‘urban crossover vehicle’, the ASX is designed to offer the best possible choice of practical, stylish and environmentally responsible family cars.

Based on the same platform as the Outlander, Lancer and Lancer Evolution X, the ASX bridges the gap between Mitsubishi’s conventional passenger cars and its rugged off-roaders. With a wheelbase to match the Outlander, passenger space is generous, with the flexible seating inside.

Offered with a choice of petrol or diesel engines, the 2012 1.8-litre diesel engine benefits from a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, whilst improving fuel economy. This results in a new VED band (from Band F to Band E), thus reducing the annual road tax cost to £115. Although there is no reduction in VED banding on the petrol derivative, there is an increase in braked towing capacity from 1100kg to 1200kg. The 116PS 1.8-litre DiD now achieves 54.3mpg (from 51mpg) and 136g/km (from 150g/km) on the official combined cycle, with the 1.6-litre petrol engine managing 47.1mpg (from 47.9mpg) with CO2 emissions remaining at 139g/km.

With low rolling resistance tyres, regenerative brakes and intelligent power management, all ASX models are geared to deliver strong fuel economy.

Safety-wise the ASX incorporates Mitsubishi’s RISE safety technology (which dissipates the energy from the impact away from the passenger compartment) as well as ABS anti-lock braking, Active Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake Distribution, Brake Assist an Emergency Stop Signal System and 7 airbags as standard. All of this helps the ASX achieve its 5 Star Euro NCAP rating.

Lance Bradley, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said: “The crossover marketplace has grown rapidly over the last 18 months. The Mitsubishi ASX has helped this growth by offering a stylish, well priced, practical and enjoyable to drive contender in this marketplace.

“With the ASX delivering excellent economy and emissions, versatility, as well as comprehensive standard equipment, and not to mention the reassuring safety features, the ASX has everything the crossover buyer is after.”

Prices for the new model start from £16,499. The first allocation of ASX 1.8 DiD 4WD diesel variants are available to the Mitsubishi dealer network from mid-January, followed by the 2WD derivatives at the end of March and the petrol units in Quarter 2 2012.

Mitsubishi is the latest car maker to sign up to Motor Codes’ New Car Code, designed to regulate the industry and ensure that customers receive first-class service.

The Japanese car maker’s addition to the Motor Codes network means that the vast majority of UK car buyers now benefit from the backing of the self-regulatory body’s guidelines and advice service, with all volume car makers now operating under the Code’s guidelines.

For Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, the move comes as part of a recent customer satisfaction drive that has seen the publication of online customer ratings for its dealer network – echoing Motor Codes’ own transparent feedback systems.

Sharon Townsend, General Manager –Service at Mitsubishi, sees the tie-up with Motor Codes as a natural step.

“Customer expectation is higher than ever and the quality of the overall customer experience must match that of the product. In today’s fast-moving online retail environment, the ability for customers to access real-time reviews and obtain independent feedback is important. Through its motorist advice line and service and repair reviews, Motor Codes complements our own Excellent Service initiatives, helping to increase customer confidence levels,” she said.

Motor Codes provides motorists with three sets of service level expectations, relating to new car sales, car service and repair and vehicle warranty products. It also offers an advice line, with free conciliation service for motorists, acting as an independent intermediary where the need might arise.

Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has a network of 138 (including service only sites) UK dealers.

Mitsubishi has appointed a new dealership, Burnham Garage, which will open its doors on Monday, April 4, 2011.

The latest addition to the Mitsubishi family will provide Mitsubishi sales, service and parts for the Thames Valley area. The sales centre will operate from Clarence Road, Windsor and the after-sales team will operate, just 1.9 miles away at Farnham Road in Slough.

Burnham Garage was established in 1952, starting with a small filling station and repair garage in Burnham, just outside Slough. The company is still family owned and now has 6 branches and an Accident Repair Centre, located in Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead, High Wycombe and Burnham and represent 4 new vehicle brands.

Managing Director of Burnham Garage, Mike Goodchild said: "We have been serving the Thames valley area for nearly 60 years now and the addition of the Mitsubishi brand will strengthen our sales portfolio. The thing we really like about Mitsubishi is its strong reputation for reliability and quality and it doesn’t conflict with any of our other new car brands. We are look forward to welcoming existing and new Mitsubishi customers within the Thames Valley area to our dealership at this very exciting time."

Dealer Franchising Manager for Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, Alan Rooke said: “Burnham Garage is a small family owned group with a reputation for customer service, which is what our customers look for in a dealership when they visit to purchase a vehicle or have their vehicle serviced. Mitsubishi’s product strategy over the next 5 years is to focus on producing vehicles with strong environmental credentials and these vehicles will be ideally suited to Burnham’s customer base.”

Rooke continued to say: “We are delighted that Burnham is joining the Mitsubishi franchise, the Thames Valley area has traditionally been a very strong area for our vehicles and we know Burnham will serve the area well.”

The appointment of Burnham Garage brings the number of Mitsubishi Motors dealers in the UK up to to 118.

Mitsubishi has revealed a new global concept small car called the ‘e-compact’ at the Geneva Motor Show. The new concept could form the platform for the car maker’s B-Segment cars, including a potential EV version.

The new design is styled to meet the needs of customers in all world markets in the lower segment in the market, offering flexible space and compact dimensions. The concept is set to be unveiled in production form towards the end of this year, prior to a start of production scheduled for early 2012 at an equally all-new plant Mitsubishi plant currently being built in Thailand, its third factory in this strategic production hub.

This new Mitsubishi will be proposed as an entry model for emerging markets as well as a fuel efficient car in developed markets. As such, this all-new e-compact project shall be the car maker’s answer to trend towards globalised demand for small and economical cars.

Developed in Okazaki (Japan) – Mitsubishi’s global R&D Centre – in less than 2 years, the forthcoming Global Small project is meant to merge all t “eco/compact” requirements into one single package, with the e in e-compact standing for –efficiency, engineering, environment, electric vehicle, economic, effective design and export.
