New Mazda6 ‘on sale’ early

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Mazda has brought forward the ‘on sale’ date for the new Mazda6 model after it noted strong demand from retail and fleet for the model.

The official on sale date for the new model, available in hatchback and estate form, will remain as April 1, but the carmaker will release petrol models into dealer showrooms from mid-March with diesel models will arrive during May.

The move means that Mazda will be able to allow its new model to take advantage of the annual boost in car sales that comes in March as the new plate goes on sale. The scrappage scheme due to end this month will also play a part in boosting sales of the new car.

The new 19-strong range features refreshed exterior and interior styling, additional equipment and a range of significant technical enhancements that improve fuel economy by up to 6.4 percent and reduced CO2 emissions by up to 6.1 percent.

The car will be available with a choice of six engines (three petrol and three diesel) and four equipment levels – S, TS, TS2, and Sport.  Improved fuel economy, lower Road Fund Licence bands and reduced Benefit In Kind costs offer buyers significant savings while prices for the new Mazda6 are increased by an average of just 4.8 percent ranging from £16,990 to £23,445 on-the-road.

Retuned engines deliver reduced CO2 emissions

Mazda6 2010 2

A new 2-litre DISI petrol engine delivers 155ps (up from 147ps), while the lower power 2.2-litre diesel generates more power and torque – up 4ps to 129ps and up 20Nm to 340Nm at 1,800rpm.  The highest power 2.2-litre diesel now produces 180ps (down 5ps) but modifications to the turbocharger boost torque delivery whilst facilitating improvements in fuel economy and CO2 emissions which therefore sees it retaining its overall excellence in performance.

A Sport 2.0-litre petrol model with Mazda’s five-speed automatic transmission is introduced after dealers reported a latent demand for a top-of-the-range model with this specification.

The upgraded Mazda6 achieves fuel economy average improvements of 3.2 and 4.1 percent (petrol/diesel) and CO2 emissions reductions that average 4.4 and 4.8 percent (petrol/diesel), so the lower power 2.2-litre, 129ps diesel hatchback now has a rating of just 138g/km.  These improvements move many models into a lower RFL band.  All new Mazda6 models now meet Euro5 emission standards.

Four, highly specified equipment levels

Although Mazda is keeping the upgraded Mazda6 range as simple as possible, buyers will continue to be offered a broad choice of powertrains and specifications, with each of the four equipment levels – S, TS, TS2, and Sport – highly specified within its price band. Upgraded equipment for the new Mazda6 encompasses ‘smart’ turn indicators and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) for the ‘S’ grade and all other models.  Additional items moving up the range include: rear spoiler (TS upwards), front & rear parking sensors and Hill Hold Assist (HHA), (TS2 upwards), and swivel-type AFS front lights (Sport).

Full leather trim is now available as an option on all TS2 and Sport models and includes powered driver and front passenger seats with a memory function on the driver’s seat.

“Distinctive styling has always given the Mazda6 ‘stand-out’ looks from other family cars and the refreshed model has an even more sophisticated appearance,” comments Mark Cameron, Sales and Marketing Director, Mazda UK.

“The upgraded Mazda6 has been given a make-over that is much more than a cosmetic exercise.  While the car has more aggressive front styling, the engines, suspension and steering have been fine-tuned enhancing the refinement of the driving experience.  Mazda6 remains among the best-in-class for CO2 emissions and its ownership experience is underpinned by reduced costs and Mazda’s outstanding build quality and reliability,” adds Cameron.

New Mazda5 to debut in Geneva

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

The new Mazda5 will be one of the highlights of the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show set for March.

Mazda will unveil its new model on March 2 to the motoring press in its world premiere.

The carmaker says that the new model builds on the 5 models reputation of meeting the needs of active European family.

The all-new model further evolves Mazda5’s acclaimed functionality – with rear sliding doors and up to 7-seat Karakuri flexibility in the spacious cabin – and creates an eye-catching exterior that is unique to the segment.

Mazda introduce its ‘Nagare Flow’ design language, which not only looks pretty good but is also highly functional and contributes to fuel efficiency by achieving a particularly low drag coefficient, together with optimal lift and air-flow stability characteristics.

“In approaching development of the all-new Mazda5,” says Hideki Matsuoka, Mazda5 Programme Manager, “our team aimed to create a new C-MAV that combines superb practicality with the superior environmental performance these modern times demand and a new expression in stylish design.”

The all-new Mazda5 is fitted with a newly-developed 2.0-litre DISI1 petrol engine equipped with i-stop, and a six-speed manual transmission with gear ratios specific to this version. This new direct-injection petrol engine offers linear and smooth performance characteristics as well as reducing emissions.

The new model will be one of the most frugal and clean C-MAVs on the market, achieving approximately 15 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the 2.0-litre petrol model it replaces. The petrol line-up also features a 1.8-litre engine with a six-speed manual transmission.

The all-new Mazda5 will go on sale across Europe later this year.

New special edition Mazda3 available in February

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Following on from the success of the Mazda2 and Mazda6 Tamura special editions in early 2009, Mazda has introduced a new 1.6 Tamura hatchback to its Mazda3 line-up from 1 February 2010 to offer customers even greater ‘added value’.

Based on TS model, the new Tamura features the addition of a Sports styling kit (with sports front grille, side skirts and sports bumpers), larger 17-inch alloy wheels with low-profile 205/50 R17 tyres, front fog lamps, special badging and free metallic paint – all for an on-the-road price of £14,995. In addition, 0% APR or low rate finance is available for all Mazda3 buyers, including the new Tamura model, until 31 March 2010.

Like its sister cars in the Mazda3 range for 2010, the new Tamura model has a fresh and sleek new bodystyle. The carmaker says that the all-new Mazda3 is in many ways a ‘baby Mazda6’ bringing the elegant excitement of that model’s distinctive lines to the C-segment.

mazda3-tamura-2010 image

“The new Mazda3 Tamura will bring extra appeal to a broader range of customers, including younger drivers, with its unique sports styling and great value for money,” comments Mark Cameron, Sales and Marketing Director, Mazda UK. “The Mazda3 Tamura brings the sophistication, style, technology and refinement of the Mazda6 to the compact family car market.”

The new Mazda3 Tamura’s bold shape has lowered aerodynamic drag to a class-leading Cd0.30 – the improved aerodynamics and retuned powertrain resulting in significant reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. The 1.6-litre petrol engine, which generates 105ps, is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and accelerates the Tamura to 62mph in a brisk 12.2 seconds. The CO2 output has been cut to 149g/km (from 162g/km on the previous generation 1.6 models) and the combined fuel economy figure for the new Tamura is 44.8mpg.

All new Mazda3 models are available to purchase under the new Government-backed scrappage scheme, with an increased Mazda Allowance of £2,000, in addition to the £1,000 Government contribution – so Mazda3 Tamura ownership can start at just £11,995. Mazda UK is supporting the scrappage scheme by offering two special finance deals to ‘scrappage sales’ customers.

Adding to the sporty styling cues of the exterior, the Mazda3 Tamura has numerous features as standard including: remote central locking, dual-zone climate control air-conditioning, welcome mode lighting, a leather steering wheel with audio controls, an MP3 compatible audio system with six speakers and auxiliary (AUX) jack input, as well as power folding mirrors and electric front and rear windows.

Safety is paramount on all-new Mazda3 with a host of equipment that includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and a Traction Control System (TCS), six airbags and an Emergency Stop Signalling (ESS) System standard on all models. This new ESS system automatically activates the hazard warning lights at cruising speeds when the ABS sensors detect emergency braking.

A choice of four body colours for the Mazda3 Tamura is available – including one new metallic (Aluminium Silver Metallic) two regular Mica colours (Black Mica and Velocity Red Mica), and the unique-to-Tamura Gunmetal Blue Mica, offered on just 255 examples of the 850 Mazda3 Tamura models being manufactured for the UK market.

Mazda2 and Mazda6 Tamura Special Edition models are also available from £11,015 (OTR) and £17,570 (OTR) respectively. The Mazda2 Tamura is based on the popular Mazda2 1.3-litre 86ps model with the addition of a Sports Styling Pack (including front and rear sports bumpers, 2-bar sports grille, side skirts and rear spoiler), new four cylinder headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, special ‘Tamura’ badging and free metallic paint.

The Mazda6 Tamura, based on the Mazda6 2.0 5dr TS model, also boasts a Sports Styling Pack (including front and rear sports bumpers, side skirts and rear spoiler), plus privacy glass, clear rear light bezels, unique 18-inch alloy wheels and special ‘Tamura’ badging. Inside, this Tamura features alloy pedals and branded Tamura floor mats.

Mazda marches on

Monday, January 11th, 2010

The final year of the decade proved a good one for Mazda, while the whole industry struggled, Mazda increased its market share.

One of the success stories of 2009, Mazda found a particularly warm reception for its new Mazda3 model, the success of which, argues the carmaker, is not down to the scrappage scheme.

mazda-3 image

The carmaker had particularly strong market growth in Scotland and in Northern Ireland. Overall, Mazda’s market share in the UK came in at 2.4 per cent. While in Scotland, total sales for the year were 6,642 and market share was 3.64 per cent, up fractionally on 2008’s share of 3.63 per cent.
Meanwhile, increased its retail market share in Northern Ireland for the fifth consecutive year in 2009 taking a 2.92 per cent share. Mazda’s total sales in Northern Ireland in 2009, including fleet sales, were 1,414 of which 990 were to private customers.

In Scotland, only 10 percent of Mazda’s sales were through the Government-backed scrappage scheme against an industry average of more than 20 per cent.

“Our success in Scotland is down to the strength and solidity of our dealer network and has been built around our sales to private customers,” said Mazda UK’s sales and marketing director, Mark Cameron.

“I am confident that we will carry on doing well in 2010 and increase our market share because we will be less exposed to the end of the scrappage scheme than some other brands,” he said.

“Our challenge for 2010 will be to continue to grow market share and become the second best-selling Japanese brand behind Toyota,” said Cameron.

“We were not as reliant on scrappage incentives in 2009 as some of our rivals so I am confident that we can meet this challenge,” concluded a confident Cameron.

New Mazda5 upgrades for New Year

Monday, December 21st, 2009

New for 2010, Mazda is introducing a completely revised line-up for its Mazda5 range offering customers a choice of six models with upgraded equipment and even greater value. On sale 1 January, new Takara and Furano models replace the previous TS2 and Sport, while a selection of four powertrains and three equipment levels ensure that the Mazda5, with its unique sliding rear doors and seating for up-to-seven, will maintain its appeal as a great family car that also delivers a truly sporty driving experience.

Prices for the four petrol and two diesel engined models start from £17,150 and £19,555 (on-the-road) respectively, with the 2-litre petrol automatic transmission variant (priced at £19,650) and the range-topping 143ps Furano diesel costing £21,555 and completing the line-up.

mazda5-2010 image

Low-rate finance packages, plus low deposit requirements (from just 0 per cent), make the 2010 Mazda5 highly affordable family transport. In addition, upgraded Mazda5 models are available for purchase under the new Government-backed scrappage scheme with an increased Mazda Allowance of £3,000, in addition to the £1,000 government contribution – so Mazda5 ownership can start at just £13,150. Mazda UK is also supporting the scrappage scheme by offering 6.9% APR finance deals to ‘scrappage sales’ customers.

“Our simplified line-up for the upgraded Mazda5 range offers consumers excellent added value, while retaining the vehicles’ unique core features that have such a strong family appeal,” comments Mark Cameron, Mazda UK Sales & Marketing Director.

“The availability of electric power for the sliding rear doors with remote operation, and a model with automatic transmission, highlight the convenience of Mazda5 ownership. Our market research confirms that the majority of Mazda5 owners are 35-to-45 year old professionals with young families who enjoy a busy lifestyle and I’m sure they will find the new Takara and Furano models for 2010 especially attractive.
“We will continue to market Mazda5 as a fine handling car that has our brand’s typically high driver appeal, with excellent refinement and aerodynamic efficiency (Cd is 0.29), plus a full complement of practical abilities to carry families in considerable comfort and safety,” concluded Cameron.

Mazda5 is the only C-MAV with twin sliding rear doors, each with an impressive 700mm door opening, and that convenience is further enhanced by the availability of electric power for these doors (on Furano models). For 2010 Mazda5 buyers can choose between eight body colours – including one solid paint (Brilliant Black), three metallic colours (Aluminium Silver metallic, Copper Red mica, Galaxy Grey mica and Stormy Blue mica), and three exclusive finishes for the Furano (Aurora Blue mica, Crystal White pearlescent and Radiant Ebony mica).

Mazda3 drives Mazda sales

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Mazda is celebrating the success of the recently launched new Mazda3 which has helped drive its European vehicles sales through September.

The European automotive industry rebounded slightly in September, with a drop of just 2.6 per cent year-on-year, but many carmakers continue to struggle and conditions remain challenging.

mazda-3-20092

There were some bright spots in September for the Mazda brand, fuelled by success of the all-new Mazda3, 16 European countries exceeded their sales projections for the month, resulting in a European retail volume that was 8 per cent above objective.

The UK led all countries by setting two all-time monthly retail sales records in September – for volume, at 11,400 units, which is up 20 per cent, and for market share, estimated at 3.1 per cent. An all-time record was also set last month in Portugal, where the brand achieved its highest estimated monthly market share ever, at 2.9 per cent. September sales volume records were recorded for the Mazda brand in Turkey (+400 per cent) and Tunisia (+21 per cent) as well.

Retail sales were also up in Spain (+2 per cent), Mazda BELUX (+ 16 per cent) and Ireland (+ 2 per cent). In Switzerland, Mazda sales volume last month equalled that of last September, despite difficult market conditions.

Mazda man buys own dealership

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Mazda national sales manager Floyd Timms liked the company and products so much he decided to invest in the brand and bought Lodge Garage in Kingswood, Aylesbury. Mr Timms, 55, worked for Mazda UK for 13 years, rising through the ranks to lead the marque’s team of business managers and has now demonstrated his faith in the brand by becoming a dealer himself.

mazda-dealership2

In the process he has also become the first Mazda employee to set up his own Mazda dealership as a private individual.

“I had the option to look at other brands, but knowing what I know about Mazda as an insider it was the franchise of choice for me. They probably made me jump through a few more hoops than an outsider to secure the franchise, but I always felt that if the right opportunity came along I would go back into retail.”

Mr Timms said that since the launch of the Mazda6 in 2002 – the car that revitalised the brand – Mazda has been a brand “in the ascendancy”. He also feels that new small Mazda2 has done for Mazda what Yaris has done for Toyota and Jazz for Honda, bringing new, younger buyers to the brand.

He took over at Lodge on September 1, trading as Buckinghamshire Mazda Ltd. Lodge has been a Mazda dealership for 30 years but had failed to embrace modern retailing, he said.

Early indications are that the gamble will pay off. “September has been a record month for Lodge with 62 new cars sold and 12 used.” Lodge’s previous best was 40 new car sales in a month. It’s an encouraging start and one of Mr Timms’s aims is to strengthen the used car business, switching to an all-makes policy.

“Half of our business in the first month has been with customers new to Mazda and we also have very loyal customers who are coming to us. There are strong shoots of recovery.”

New CX-7 set to join growing crossover sector

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

The New Mazda CX-7 Sports Crossover goes on sales on November 1, and with the new model expected to deliver a sportier performance combined with everyday practicality, Mazda is hoping the CX-7 will compete with popular crossover models like the Qashqai and Kia Soul.  With a powerful and refined 173ps turbo-diesel powertrain, the new CX-7 will take Mazda into a whole new sector of the UK marketplace when it goes on sale in November.

new-cx-7-2009-image

“In the best Mazda tradition, our new Mazda CX-7 enables us to offer a distinctive Sports Crossover that is different from the huge line-up of SUV-type vehicles currently available.  With its sporty  appearance, new CX-7 is more heavily orientated towards a sportscar in its styling and driving dynamics, while offering an SUV-style commanding driving position and a strong road presence that portrays Mazda’s ‘dare to be different’ brand identity,” comments Mazda UK’s Sales & Marketing Director Mark Cameron.

“The Mazda CX-7’s new turbo diesel engine generates maximum torque of 400Nm from only 2000rpm, with smooth power delivery and real punch from just 1,600rpm, for strong linear acceleration.  Together with a five percent stiffer bodyshell, re-tuned suspension, revised gear ratios and lower cabin noise, new CX-7 is a remarkably refined and sporty driving experience,” adds Cameron.

The new Mazda CX-7 is being marketed in the UK as a single, highly specified model, priced at £25,785 (on the road), in a choice of five colours.

Inside, the new CX-7 has generous space for five occupants to travel in comfort, while the sports utility-style rear seat functionality and generous boot space (455 litres with the rear seats upright), makes this Mazda an ideal vehicle for multi-activity lifestyles.

The split rear seats can be folded 60/40 using Mazda’s unique Karakuri system with a one touch rear seat back release located in the boot trim side panel.  With the back seats folded, load space becomes 774 litres.

“I am convinced that there is still plenty of life in the UK’s SUV segment and with the Mazda CX-7 delivering sporty handling and a rewarding driving experience the new model sets us apart from our rivals.
“The new Mazda CX-7 is not a huge vehicle designed for the country that will be brought into town – it is a Sports Crossover with plenty of attitude, plenty of versatile ability and great dynamics that out-perform the class.  It is the ultimate expression of ‘Zoom-Zoom’ driving excitement in a sophisticated 4-wheel drive sports crossover vehicle,” concludes Cameron.

New adaptations for the UK Market
Manufactured in Japan, the original CX-7 was hugely popular in the USA.  For the European and UK markets the car incorporated several significant changes to meet the specific demands and tastes of local consumers.

The biggest changes were to the power and drive trains.  The 244ps engine marketed in the USA was replaced by the highly efficient 260ps turbocharged four-cylinder petrol powerunit also featured in the Mazda3 MPS super-hatch model.  The CX-7’s fully-independent suspension set-up was also retuned for European roads to deliver handling agility that was unmatched in this class.

Mazda CX-7 road tests

Mazda CX-7 new and nearly new deals

Now, for new Mazda CX-7, the focus switches to providing a diesel engine model suitable to the changing needs of the European market in this growing SUV segment.  Every new CX-7 sold in the UK features a 173ps, 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder MZR-CD diesel engine producing up to 400Nm of torque from just 2000rpm, a six-speed manual transmission with an ‘overdrive’ top gear (0.711:1), and Mazda’s unique Active Torque 4-wheel drive system, which distributes up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels to maintain traction.

This new Mazda combines sensationally spirited performance, thanks to excellent levels of torque, to deliver strong acceleration and a responsive drive, combined with genuine everyday practicality and remarkable refinement.  Meanwhile, combined fuel economy returns 37.7mpg while CO2 emissions are 199g/km.

Generous Equipment, Spacious and Versatile Interior
New Mazda CX-7 has a more dynamic ‘face’ with a larger five-point grille and chrome detailing, a chrome garnish along the bottom of the doors, a larger rear spoiler, new design larger 19-inch alloy wheels and Xenon headlights.

Inside the CX-7 Sport Tech, there are numerous standard premium features including: leather seats, climate control air-conditioning, cruise control, electric front and rear windows, electric driver’s and front passenger’s heated seats, a bespoke BOSE® premium surround sound audio system with 6-CD autochanger and nine speakers, plus integrated satellite navigation and Bluetooth® technology (that enables wireless operation of both mobile phones and playing MP3 devices through the car’s audio system).

Upgraded safety technologies
Naturally, safety is of paramount concern when Mazda designs and engineers its cars and new CX-7 introduces several new items of ‘active’ safety equipment to help drivers cope with the everyday hazards of motoring.

A new Emergency Stop Signalling (ESS) system automatically activates the hazard warning lights whenever the driver brakes abruptly and heavily.

Additional safety is provided by the new Rear Vehicle Monitoring system (RVM), previously available only on Mazda6 and new Mazda 3 MPS.  This aid to safe lane-changing uses wide-angle radar units to monitor traffic behind the CX-7 and warns the driver of an approaching vehicle before he/she has a chance to move across into a busy lane by mistake.  The system, which is effective in all weathers, also detects vehicles driving in the ‘blind spot’ area and does not monitor or detect cars following behind in the same lane.

Exploiting the computerised electronics of the four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) system, CX-7 also offers a Traction Control System (TCS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

Like the majority of Mazda models, the CX-7 is equipped with front, side and curtain airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters.
