Race Retro 2009 hailed as great success

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

race-retro2

The glorious sunshine and exceptional calibre of racing stars brought motorsport enthusiasts out in their thousands to visit Race Retro 2009 at Stoneleigh Park. Several of the visitors to the enjoyable day were there FREE after winning tickets on RoadTestReports.co.uk for submitting a consumer review (the latest competition on the website can be found here)

Defying the credit crunch, audience numbers rose over ten per cent with around 24,500 visitors enjoying rally legends Russell Brookes, Mark Higgins and Rauno Aaltonen in action on the live Rally Stage.

Thousands gathered to see Rauno reunited with his original 1964 Monte Carlo Rally Mini Cooper S before joining Mark Higgins in the 2008 Aston Martin GT V8 Rally car. Russell Brookes put the Andrews ‘Heat for Hire’ cars through their paces while the drivers of Slowly Sideways GB showcased their skills in Porsches, Austin Healeys, Opels and Sunbeams.

Now owned by Live Promotions, Race Retro also featured appearances for Paddy Hopkirk, Barry Whizzo Williams, Rosemary Smith and Tony Mason on the interview stage where the most versatile man in motorsport Steve Parrish held court. Steve was joined by motorcycling racers Mick Grant and Guy Martin as well as playing quiz master for the Question of Motorsport.

Colin Ward, Managing Director of Live Promotions, said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend with the weather and the increased visitor numbers. As new owners, the most important aspect of the show for us was to encourage a younger audience into Race Retro and historic motorsport, and it was great to see so many families and youngsters at the show over the weekend.”

And it wasn’t just the box office booming as the H&H Classic Auction also proved successful with over £800,000 worth of sales. A 1954 Arnolt Bristol Bolide was sold for £115,500 while a 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT was brought for £77,000. Although the 24 carat gold painted Aston Martin proved too rich for most, a fully inscribed Silver cup from the Dutch TT, Assen, awarded to Mike Halewood for his 1st Place victory in the 350cc Race of 1966 secured a price of £13,500.

Race Retro visitors set for a Mini motorsport feast

Monday, March 9th, 2009

MINI UK will be attending Race Retro this year and bringing two show stars with them, in the form of its latest John Cooper Works models.  Fans of MINI will have the opportunity to get up close to the MINI John Cooper Works CHALLENGE race car and its road going equivalent the high-performance MINI John Cooper Works. Race Retro takes place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from 13 to 15 March.

In addition, visitors to Race Retro will be some of the first to see the all-new MINI Convertible. MINI’s new drop-top is its latest model to be unleashed on UK roads and marks a milestone in MINI’s 50th birthday year.

The 1967 Monte Carlo Rally winning Morris Mini Cooper along with the victorious driver Rauno Aaltonen and a superb collection of some of the most significant ex-works cars in Mini history will be displayed. The Morris Mini Cooper 997cc, the ex works car used by Rauno Aaltonen, Timo Makinen (the original Flying Finn) in 1962 and driven by Paddy Hopkirk in 1963 Monte Carlo Rally will also appear along with the Mini Clubman 4 wheel drive, built by BMC Special Tuning Department for TV Rallycross driven by Bob Freeborough, Brian Chatfield, Dave Preece, and Hugh Weldon.

Completing the line up is the Mini Cooper S 1275 race car, the Cooper Car Company group 5 touring car from 1968, and the Rover Mini Cooper which is the last of the works Minis built in 1996 that raced at Nurburgring 24 hr and 6 hr races in 1996 before being rebuilt as a rally car and driven by Tony Dron on 1997 Monte Carlo Rally. The Mini LBL 6D is being shown courtesy of the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon and will be a key model in its Mini anniversary celebrations in 2009 which includes a Mini Festival and two weeks dedicated to Mini themed events.

In an extra tribute, Historic Car Art will unveil an original acrylic on canvas painting by John Ketchell produced especially for Race Retro 2009 entitled ‘Mini Magic’, depicting the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally with Paddy Hopkirk, which is appearing at the show, and Henry Liddon in the winning Mini Cooper S leading the third placed Saab 96 of Erik Carlsson and Gunner Palm.

Although the static display will be impressive, nothing can beat these famous Minis in action so a special treat for rallying enthusiasts will be Rauno Aaltonen in spirited attack mode driving his original 1964 Monte Carlo Rally Mini Cooper S. Rauno will also strap himself into the thundering 420 bhp Aston Martin V8GT Rally car for a few swift passes over the Race Retro live action Rally Stage tarmac.

Race Retro 2009 will be held from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th March. Adult tickets are £20 for Friday and £15 for Saturday and Sunday when booking in advance with free parking. Children’s tickets on Friday are £5 but free all weekend. The show is open from 9.30am each day and closes at 5.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 4.30pm on Sunday.

Classic Quarter Pounders on show at Race Retro 2009

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Not to be overshadowed by their circuit racing and gravel spewing cousins, the retro kings of the quarter mile are showing up in force at Race Retro 2009, held 13-15 March at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry.

Gina ‘Hot Rot’ Rumble and Scottie ‘Dog’ Durrant from GAS Racing will be bringing along their altered dragster called Tiki Munki. Based on an Austin Ruby and running a 1954 Ford Pop front ‘gasser’ axle and powered by a Ford 2-litre Pinto with a Weber 38DGAS carburettor, the Ford four cylinder is hooked up to a running a five-speed gearbox and a Sherpa 200 rear axle. Tiki Munki scored an impressive fourth place in the 2008 season and has managed a best top speed of 98mph with a best elapsed time of 13.5 seconds.

Proving that you don’t need a banker’s bonus to have fun screaming up the quarter mile, Tiki Munki, is so named after cockney rhyming slang; yep, incredibly, it was built for just £500 (and that monkey even includes the cost of the trailer).

C&C Nostalgia Drag Racing Team meanwhile, is celebrating its 15th year of racing in 2009, and they’ve brought along their Slingshot Dragster ‘Backdraft’ which is a methanol injected Junior Fueller that just happens to be celebrating its 40th birthday.

Owned and driven by ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell, ‘Backdraft’ runs in the Wild Bunch Nostalgia Drag Racing class and the car really is a veteran of the strip. Originally built in 1969 as ‘Malibu Express’ the car was renamed ‘Pink Panther’ and run as such between 1972 and 1974. Chris rebuilt the car between 1992 and 1995, and would welcome any information which would fill the gap between in the car’s history between 1974 and 1992.

Packing a 377 cubic inch small block Chevy, running a compression ratio of 14:1, ‘Backdraft’ is capable of a best elapsed time and speed of 8.747 seconds at 151.08mph. So Race Retro will provide a rare chance for drag racing fans to get an up close and crystal clear view of the car!

Race Retro 2009 is open from 9.30am to 5.30pm Friday and Saturday, and 9.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday. Adult ticket prices are £20 for Friday and £15 for Saturday and Sunday when booking in advance and parking is free. Children’s tickets on Friday are £5 but free all weekend. Show opens from 9.30am and closes at 5.30pm Friday and Saturday and 4.30pm Sunday.

For your chance to win one of five pairs of tickets we have to give away for either of the weekend days, then click the link.
